I'm overwhelmed. Justice in the dark ep 2:

I need to find downloads of the eps. Does anyone have anywhere they know of I could download? I need to backup this show.

The scenes of Fei Du (pei su) as a child are SO good. So good. So fitting of the book. So heavy emotionally it makes me feel like Fei Du is similar to the Protagonist in Flower of Evil. Such a Korean drama style emotional horror tone to it, which is heavy and intimate in a way I didn't expect to run into.

The way light is used for Luo in Pei Sus flashbacks - the light that rushes in to hold him, to hide the death from his eyes, that pulls him out of the dark house (prison) and into the light outside (freedom). The person who stands in the light of his flashbacks, the person he looks to for help as his dad holds him and drags him back into the dark of the house. His eyes saying: help me. Believe me. Luos expression saying he'd do anything to save the kid, wants to do anything to help Pei Su. The scene in the police room where pei su is so angry, and you know Luo reached the limit of what he could legally do to help pei su, and it broke both of them in that room. And ever since they've been fractured and reactive. Just ALL the visuals of those scenes were so perfectly done, so that the themes of the story hit visually and create the entire experience. It was so so cool to see the book moments like that visually.

The scene right after. With Luo in the light and warmth, pei su in the dark and white cool tones in the dark house with the flowers showing he's still trapped in the past. Luo is in the warmth, the present, but he's looking at the present documents (of the case) and connected to all his past cases through that, he's trapped in the past too but seeking a path forward into the future, and he's the light that can help pei su move forward too. I loved the comparison of them as warmth and cold, passion and thought. The yin yang kind of comparison, the opposites, the way they're the focus point of the entire 7 years together ans even though Tao was there he's a side piece of it, the witness to Luo trying to save Pei Su and failing, of them revolving around each other connected ever since that event. Absolutely amazing to see that visual. I loved it so much

Funner smaller notes: Luo with a black cat, stubble, and a blue walled apartment screams Zhao Yunlan and I suspect those were intentional references.

The city and car chases actually look good, which I'm happy for. In contrast the mansion and police office look more fantasy like a xianxia cgi set, and i personally like it because it gives this sort of a quality like we are seeing these very Important Locations for Pei Su as if through his eyes of what they symbolize - the manor is cold, dark, dead, looming too tall, oppressive, covered in shadows. The seat of justice where Luo works has open windows that are beautiful and let in the light, but it also looms and has its shadows occasionally, it's failings where it falls short, where it's a part of the machine that hurts others and fails to allow good to happen (like Luo unable to save pei su from his father). With Luos own home being warm and cozy, and the outside environments and offices being the most safe and bright and open (things Pei Su associates with seeing Luo - outside his hhouse, outside in the city, in the office of Luo and Tao). For me this choice of either less realism or specific places to save budget lol, is a good one

so COOL to hear Pei Sus English Song he likes to listen to instead of imagining it

I love that Pei Su is the protagonist, and portrayed in this way like you don't know if he's a murderer or not if you haven't read the book. Again it reminds me of how Flower of Evil started, which is an ambiguous take for a protagonist I did NOT expect to be given but I love a lot

This adaptation is SO much better than I expected it to be. Its so cool seeing scenes from the book play out

I love the aesthetic of the show it reminds me of Under the Skin which I had desperately hoped for

I love Tao Rans casting he's perfect he's exactly what I imagined when I read and it's just reminding me how dearly I love him.

I actually do like Luos actor now that I'm seeing him act. Visually he's not what I expected but honestly I couldn't even fancast for him I had such a specific mental visual. But the actual acting of the guy? He's doing exactly the kind of personality I expected. I love his acting, especially when he looks at Pei Su in the flashbacks like he wants to save him so much, help, and just Can't.

I love the Tao/luo/pei interactions. They're just how i pictured them. Luo/pei are too snippy to have flirty chemistry super early on, and both fighting for Tao to back them up and be Theirs and pick Their side. But all 3 are very familiar. <3

Kurt Fashion Retrospective s4

Also hoped to combine seasons but nope. I talk too much. Hopefully 5-6 I can do together. Link to masterpost

Season 4: First off, as well as the lack of skirts/kilts, also sad we never see the harnesses again after s2. What’s the deal? Maybe now they stay in the bedroom ;)

Anyway. So, season 4 is a bit of a darker season? Kurt’s all heartbroken etc, and we see it with how much black/grey Kurt wears. It’s only in the last few eps and leading into s5 (enter the Crack era) that the brighter colours show up. But honestly here it’s not too weird bc s3 Kurt wasn’t one for bright colours anyway.

Esp in NY, we have Kurt develop his style more. Also, he’s not always all dolled up (I think partly bc we see him more just around his home, whereas earlier seasons he’s dressed up for school). So we get cozy Kurt, in those hoodies I love.

But we do see how Kurt has settled, he’s feeling comfortable and confident in NY so he’s toned down the outfits a lot more, doesn’t let them speak for him. Part of me his sad bc some of his looks can be a bit plain/boring/unKurt, but also Chris is beautiful so he can wear anything and look great. Omg in Sadie Hawkins when Kurt legit just in a henley and jeans. Like, who are you.

And again, lots of black. Maybe he’s mourning his relationship lol. Really, not until around Lights Out do we see Kurt sneaking in some colour. I’ll discuss it more in s5 but really tho, Kurt never really did the ‘bunch of bright colours’ thing? His go to colour was red, but that goes with his black/white ensembles. Even s2, there’s Never Been Kissed with the yellow sweater, there’s some pale greens/blues scattered? Again, I’ll discuss more s5...

But anyway, this is Kurt settling into who he is, a lot less statement pieces. And, looking over, not as many ascots as I remember? SOme New Rachel and Glease, but those were the bigger, tucked into collar kind. And then most are in the last few eps, and those are smaller style that still show collarbone. Maybe setting up s5 style? 

Honestly, I think s4 is my fav for Kurt style. First off, more of his fluffy hair rather than the ski slope lol. But also, with his comfy at-home clothes, or his workout clothes for school... Idk, just a different Kurt and I like it. He ofc still rocks a suit, but not as fun as before. A lot of... just a suits, not as many ‘Kurt’ twists. But I guess he’s working, he’s trying to build a career, so has to be more muted. Still, I miss the skirts and capes. And the harnesses.

So, least fav of the season....

I just.... I mean, first off, stands out so much bc rest of season he’s worn Nothing like this. And he never wears this again. I know the theme of ep, everyone wore red/white/pink, but omg Kurt has red clothes that are better. Idk what happened here, sorry Kurt but no.

Now for my favs.... there are so many Help.... Just assume any hoodie he wears I love lol

welcome to fae land’s mistywood high, home of the bullfrogs! once dilapidated school buildings brought back to life by thickets and weeds, swathed in a new coat of pastel pollen paint; teeming with life through vines and ivy, wisteria and lavender and baby breath filling every crack along concrete hallways. plums of roots, shoots, and flowers blooming out of lockers as birds chitter and crickets sing, binders labeled in floral washitape: Large Wing Anatomy Vol.156, ALCHEMY OF RARE GEMSTONES, the encyclopedia of rules and ramifications of ingesting fae food. sneaking out into the mushroom fields and having your first kiss over bioluminescent fungi, all your love immersed in neon blue. a world of neverending youth, dizzy drunk with nectar juice and the splendor of puppy love, each one as intoxicating as the one before. the cafeteria is teeming with political warfare, lines drawn along cliques and conformity. the maddening spin of petals and popularity, crying tears of mascara in the bathrooms... oh honey, life is just a classroom.

how exciting it can be, to dream up new worlds & wonders as the taylor’s version remasters release, and sparse them across new chapter eps, to revel in the majesty and whimsy of our hopelessly romantic inner youth. i hand picked these songs because i think they embody the whirlwind rush of high school, exacerbated under the conditions of nearly endless youth for my fickle fairy friends. 

collaboration continues as my good friend, jack antonoff, returns to my side once again to help with production, this time with his iconic indie-pop sound from bleachers alongside him. every song is remastered under his touch, and you might hear the fluttering beat of fairy wings, the twinkle of their magic, the cry of the bullfrog, the chorus of the crickets, and the endless wistfulness i feel when i think back to this journey we started on. lover, state of grace, and daylight got special attention from the both of us, as i wanted to recreate vibes and aesthetics of mistywood to the deepest of my heart’s desires, and as always, jack thoroughly delivered. also joining me again is hozier, who took complete creative liberty with his remaster, which will bring you to your knees with wonderment and hope. maren morris also joins this chapter for a feature, lending her gentle vocals to create an echoing, beautiful rendition that’ll haunt as much as it hopes. when i started this project, i knew i needed troye sivan to join me on at least one track, and he helped spin a gossamer-light tale of sparkling first infatuation, and helped elevate the track with the original demo lyrics from my days at nineteen. brendon urie rejoined my side for a heart-stopping, strings & piano only rerecord of ME!, a titular pop track from the past two years that’s been passed over by many, so i decided to present it in an incandescent, softer light. lastly, the wonderful kacey musgraves lends her voice and songwriting talent to help combine two iconic songs to create a whole new story - you belong with // betty finally brings the james/august/betty love triangle to fruition, after inez accuses august of actually having feelings for betty, and the titular night of prom that changes everything.

this album is a love letter to love itself. // these songs are open letters. // no matter what love throws at you, you have to believe in it. you have to believe in love stories & prince charmings & happily every after. that’s why i write these songs. because i think love is fearless. // fearless is walking into your freshman year of high school almost immortally at fifteen. // an endless seventeen-year-old standing on a porch, learning to apologize. lovestruck kids wandering up and down the evergreen High Line. // the purple-pink skies of the soccer field on the walk home; the dazzle of opal necklaces i couldn’t afford gleaming from a department store jewelry case. // crowds of loving, vibrant people in the bleachers, watching acorn lacrosse. // daydreaming on parchment and mused about who might ask who to the dance or how nervous i was singing the anthem at the local fairyball game. //  // they are the moments you saw sparks that weren’t really there, felt stars aligning without having any proof, saw your future before it happened, and then saw it slip away without any warning. // a single thread that, for better or for worse, ties you to your fate. // wonderment. intrigue. romance. i noticed things and decided they were romantic, and so they were. // creaks in the floorboards and ultraviolet morning light. // we crave romance. we long for those rare, enchanting moments when things just fall into place. above all else, we really, really want our lives to be filled with love. // love, wonder, and whimsy they deserve //  being young and needing someone so badly, you jump in head first without looking. // real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn’t fade or spontaneously combust. // opening the curtains to see the clearest, brightest daylight after the darkest night. // their secret admirer looks at them and sees an elaborate sunset of brilliant color and dimension and spirit and pricelessness. // all the angles of the kaleidoscope that is you. // i don’t think you should wait. i think you should speak now.

End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018

Happy Merry to all you readers!

I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new. Who knows it might break the tension with that younger/older relative round the xmas table when you find they also happen to like k-pop/jazz-funk/grindcore or at the very least you can bicker about the tragedy of the current album charts (Greatest Showman: 21 weeks!). Unify Gathering 2018: A Review

DAY 1

As someone who bussed down to Unify, I’m definitely glad I did. The relaxing and hassle free ride down to Tarwin was only interrupted when it started raining when we reached the coast.

With my tent set up in a matter of minutes (cheers Kmart), I met my fellow campers and was introduced to the ‘Unify Vibe’. Everyone was incredibly friendly and the atmosphere couldn’t even be dampened by the incessant rain.

I only caught the last few songs from Belle Haven, but if their charismatic Sunday acoustic set was anything to go by, they’re definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.

I was one of the lucky few to get my Unicoin wristband early, so I can’t really complain about the incredibly long line that I walked past after Belle Haven finished, but after running into some friends and waiting with them for their wristbands, I guess if there’s one thing to take away from Unify 2018, it’s that it definitely pays to get in early, especially at a festival of 7500 people.

Knocked Loose were up next and by god, the hype was palpable. The pit opened as soon as the band came onstage, and the crowd followed frontman Bryan Garris’ every move. Finger pointing goodness ensued as the band ran through fan favourites Counting Worms and Deadringer. Halfway through the set Garris asked how many people had heard of Knocked Loose, and was greeted with an entire crowd of raised arms. Hardcore is set to dominate 2018.

If Knocked Loose had already set the bar high, Sydneysiders Polaris absolutely obliterated it. Opening with ‘Lucid’, the band powered through a setlist comprised largely of songs off their debut album ‘The Mortal Coil’, much to the crowd’s delight. At points, fans almost drowned out the band, particularly during set closer and hottest 200 charting ‘The Remedy’. The band’s growth in the last 12 months is incredible, and proves that the Aussie scene is stronger than ever.

After going fucking hard to Polaris, I retreated to the campsite to have a drink and a game of Uno. I legged it to Tonight Alive’s Underworld release party at the bush bar, and was almost blinded with a sea of yellow. When Tonight Alive finally arrived they greeted every fan and thanked them, after spending so long overseas (Australia wasn’t even graced with a proper Limitless headliner), the release of ‘Underworld’ couldn’t come at a better time for the Sydney ‘Conscious Rockers’, Tonight Alive are definitely back. It was still raining by the time their set rolled around, but the mood was electric. Some in the crowd were still wearing yellow flower crowns from the release party, as the band belted out a mix of classics and newer songs. Welcome home Tonight Alive, we’ve missed you.

Next up was one of the most anticipated sets of the night, Architects burst onstage amid a flurry of lasers and cryo. Their set consisted mainly of songs from their last 2 albums, and while bodies hurled over the barrier during ‘Gravity’, everyone wanted to be in the mosh for crowd favourite ‘These Colours Don’t Run’. Rain split the light from the lasers as the crowd pulsed to the beat of every song. It was already set to be an emotional night, but following the new track ‘Doomsday’, everyone knelt on the ground as a tribute to Tom Searle as Sam Carter made a speech about loss and the importance of being able to grieve. There was barely a dry eye in the crowd as the band rolled onto ‘Gone With The Wind’. Architect’s Unify set was incredibly special, and will no doubt a favourite for many for years to come.

It’s been a while since Parkway Drive were last in Australia, but their first shows back were definitely special, celebrating a decade of metalcore classic ‘Horizons’. While the mosh had definitely gotten rowdy earlier in the day, Winston McCall definitely knows how to command a crowd. The Oompa Loompa boatrace was another highlight of the night, with other favourites ‘Wild Eyes’ and ‘Bottom Feeder’ chucked in for good measure. One last blast of confetti and it was over for the night, we all shuffled back to our tents, hoping that they had lasted the storm.

DAY 2

While I would’ve loved a sleep in, I was up bright and early (as in, 6am early) on Saturday, and was able to catch some of the brief glimpses of sun before the clouds began to roll in once again. I spent the morning hanging out at the campsite until it was time for my first set of the day.

I’ve heard about The Beautiful Monument quite a bit in the last few months, and so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw the band live, performing their own blend of synthcore and rock which ends up sounding a little like a PVRIS/Motionless in White mashup. Definitely a band worth checking out if you haven’t already, they also pulled a decent crowd for so early on in the day. Here’s hoping we see more of them in 2018.

I only caught the last of Outright’s set, but it was absolutely incredible.

A little more relaxing before what I like to call ‘The Marathon’, with back to back massive sets, starting off with Perth’s Cursed Earth. Applause was scattered as the band came onstage with a different vocalist, but they still gave an absolutely blistering set, full of hardcore mosh anthems off their newest double release ‘Cycles of Grief’.

Young Lions were a refreshing breather of rock goodness, and even the return of rain couldn’t stop the seemingly nonstop crowdsurfing. Ending with ‘Burn the Money’, Young Lions undoubtedly earned a load of new fans.

It was now raining heavily as Void of Vision finally came onstage, throwing merch into the crowd. The set relied heavily on cuts from their latest EP ‘Disturbia’, vocalist Jack Bergin climbed up the stage frame halfway through their set (what OHS?).

Roam were seemingly blown away with the size of the crowd during their set, pumping through a mix of old and new songs, before the crowd sang vocalist Alex Costello happy birthday. Watching the band’s growth just since the release of 2017’s ‘Great Heights & Nosedives’ has been incredible, and I can’t wait to see what the Roam camp has up their sleeves next.

The sun had just begun to peak through the clouds as Being As An Ocean took the stage. Playing songs mainly off their most recent album ‘Waiting For Morning To Come’, Joel Quartuccio dove into the audience to sing their last few songs. Despite a rough few months and a label dispute hindering the release of their 2017 album, the fan reaction to the newer songs (OK, Black & Blue, Thorns), proves that in 2018, fan support can still go a long way.

Next up was Make Them Suffer, who pulled a massive crowd following the incredible success of 2017’s ‘Worlds Apart’. As everyone has already heard by now, the walls of death and moshing was only interrupted by the absolute legends playing Uno in the pit (during Widower of all songs). The set was a perfect balance of old and new (though I was a bit emo when they didn’t play Fireworks).

Following a brief game of ping pong cricket in the pit, Knuckle Puck came out to give us all one final kick of Pop Punk for the night. The band seemed at home onstage, pumping out songs ‘Evergreen’ and ‘Gone’. Vocalist Joe Taylor proved he was a pro at Aussie festival culture, doing a shoey before the band had even played their first song.

The temperature had well and truly started to drop as Stick To Your Guns kicked off their set, full of cuts from their newest album ‘Married to the Noise’ as well as hits like ‘Amber’ and ‘We Still Believe’. Jesse Barnett took time out of the night to say how special it was that Unify gave bands the opportunity to play in front of massive audiences, and how mind blowing it was to see how many Aussie fans they had.

If anyone had any expectations for Hellion’s set, they were well and truly exceeded, to see how far the band have come since the release of ‘Opera Oblivia’ is incredible. Real Bad came out for his feature on ‘Hellions’, and a sneaky appearance from Northlane’s Marcus Bridge, as well as a debut of their still unreleased new song ‘X’, made the landmark set feel truly special.

Having seen Hands Like Houses multiple times on their ‘Dissonants’ cycle, I slid to the side of the crowd to watch the full show from the Canberra rockers. And by god I wasn’t disappointed. Confetti and cryo burst into the air as they powered through absolute bangers ‘I Am’, ‘Drift’, and slower songs like ‘A Tale of Outer Suburbia’.

It was bloody cold by the time The Amity Affliction came onstage, and despite being advertised as a ’15 Year Anniversary Show’, fans waiting for some deeper cuts were most likely disappointed, but the start of the set was full of classic hits pre ‘Let The Ocean Take Me’. Even the band seemed bored though as they dragged through the last few songs, and everyone seemed glad to be able to lug themselves back to the campsite.

DAY 3

Most people had left early on in the morning, so by the time I wandered down to the acoustic stage, the vibe was incredible. The sun had finally come out, and those who had waited around were greeted with clear blue skies and mellow tunes.

Belle Haven were the first acoustic I saw, and the intimate vibe seemed to suit them better as they chatted with the audience in between songs. Their cover of Paramore’s ‘Decode’ with an unbelievable feature from Brie (? My god, I’m sorry I can’t remember her name but she was so bloody good) was a particular highlight.

I didn’t know too many of the bands on the acoustic stage, but I’m now proudly a fan of Chasing Ghosts.

Introvert were up next, and even though the band seemed a little worse for wear from the previous night, they were still absolutely incredible.

I finally lugged all my shit to the bus area, which was full of people staring at the ground, eyes glazed. The ride home was a quiet one, with almost everyone on my bus taking the opportunity to have a nap on the 2 hour ride back to Melbourne. For my first Unify, I’m incredibly glad I went. Even though it rained all weekend, spending time with friends and making new ones all while listening to incredible bands made it a weekend I’ll never forget.

"You’d expect someone with a voice that good — whether he’s singing the blues or growling his signature “This is Bob Dorr, driving the blues bus down Blue Avenue” into his studio microphone — to act a bit like the rock star he is. "You’d be wrong." - from a Dan Weeks article in The Iowan "2015 finds Bob Dorr & The Blue Band celebrating their 34th anniversary. Beginning June 10, 1981, the band has averaged playing around 100 dates a year for its 30+ year existence, resulting in a multi generational, dedicated fan base, and making them one of Iowa’s most revered, storied, and requested bands. Kansas City music writer Paul Taylor says "If you wanted to furnish your own nightclub, you would want The Blue Band. They are like one of those gleaming bright white appliances that you oohh and ahh over, and when you open the doors, all the best features you ever wanted come spilling out." Mississippi Valley Blues Society Director Karen McFarland says "...the best damn rockin’ soul dance band in the heartland." Originally called "Bobby’s Blue Band" (an obvious tongue-in-cheek play on blues icon Bobby Blue Bland), The Blue Band is a 5-7 piece group whose sound can only be described as The blues/soul/rockabilly/reggae/creole/rhythm Band! The band can play nearly three hours of original music or another three hours of popular covers, done in Blue Band fashion. A typical night mixes originals and covers plus a few requests.
