[TRANS]  NCT 127 Interview for ‘ELLE’ May 2018 Issue!
Tumblr media
"There are things in the world that are difficult if you think about them this way, and things that are easy if you think of them as simple. That's what I think." Doyoung's phrase is fairly accurate. NCT is a group pretty hard to explain to people who don't know them. So far a few members have debuted but it's not all of them yet and they're spread into units with some members being a part of two or three units like an intersection, so the members belonging to this unit may not be a part of the next promotions. So as I'm becoming embarassed the more I try to explain this group, I'll stop with the long explanations and here is what I want to say. First of all, please watch any stages with the name NCT coming up. Idol culture in Korea from that moment was a little different from the mainstream culture territory. Sometimes a mega hit song that the whole nation knows is born, some members get known through survival and variety shows, but the market which has expanded under the name of K-Pop has become too big to roughly understand it. NCT is close to being SM's "ultimate item" for those who are into idol gods and are expecting something new and perfect. It may be similar to early Marvel fans crying from emotions when watching a movie full of Marvel characters in 4DX. But it doesn't mean that the general public weren't thirsty to see the teams identity. In march they released an album titled <NCT 2017 Empathy>  containing NCT127, NCT U and NCT Dream's 18 voices all together with a total of 6 music videos, which the members are proud of. "Ever since NCT debuted there was a lot of people curious about our brand. For 2 years many people found it hard to understand it, so I think we'll be able to explain it through this project. Songs and performance are important but I think this promotion became the starting point of showing 'NCT is like this' " leader Taeyong says with confidence. 'The 100 Sec Choreography' video including all 18 members that scoring 2,2m views on youtube is a good example.  The other members slowly opened up too. "I'm proud of the album we did as 18 people. It was our goal to showcase what NCT really is. We are promoting together and I can see the artist aspect of the members, I'm sure we've grown a lot." (Mark) "It was nice to show various genres and stages through one album. Thanks to the success of several units, our team or existence was able to leave an impression on the public." (Taeil) Until now NCT 127 didn't seem to be paying attention to what was public friendly.  From their debut track "Firetruck" with fast beat and intense choreography on stage making it hard to recognise the faces of the members,  "Limitless" featuring Taeyong's very low rap, until Cherry Bomb with repeating lyrics that you need to listen to carefully to get to know them (the lyrics in question are ppalli ppalli pihae right cherry bomb feel it yum).  This time "Touch" is bright and soft, definitely a different stage from NCT 127. Was there any disagreements between members when choosing a song so different from their usual colour? All members agreed that it's a good song, even though they worried about it at times. “We all liked the song as soon as we heard it. Since the song is very bright, we all talked about how energizing it was for us while we practiced our choreography.” (Jaehyun) Currently, the members are all in the middle of the brightest and most fun promotions they’ve had so far. “I got to see the hyungs’ cute side a lot. When we were on radios or during other promotions, it felt as if the boundaries between us became softer than usual.” (Haechan) Continuing <NCT 2018 Empathy> promotions, NCT 127 even had their own japanese showcase during the first week of April. Yuta, who is SM’s first ever debuted Japanese idol, was also very touched. “I was very nervous but it all ended finely. I had to represent the other members who all have trouble with Japanese. I took responsibility and tried to help them a lot so it was a lot of weight on my shoulders. But it still felt nice to know that the members relied on me. (Laugh) Through these promotions, I thought about how much more our members should stick together.” (Yuta) To have such sparkling youths, 18 at that, in one group still feels like an unrealistic situation. Out of them, even meeting half of them, NCT 127, for a short time, we could confirm that they are stronger than they seem and all rely on each other a lot. For example, Doyoung was trying hard to help Winwin, the member who has the most trouble with Korean, with questions like “Didn’t you tell me you before that you liked this?” whenever Winwin seemed like he had something to say (people think when you don't say anything it would mean you don't have anything you want to express but that's not always the case, Winwin expressing his gratefulness [to the other members] for understanding him was very nice to see!), Johnny who didn't think much of it at that time but [now feels that] Yuta probably had a hard time during the Japanese showcase (Johnny is acknowledged by the members as NCT's 'Communication Center' and as the 'Peacemaker' among the more reserved members), Taeil who showed his inner heart said he always feels grateful for the members as just speaking to them makes him feel more at ease, and Yuta who said that watching Mark promote without rest gives him strength. Even in the moments when they watch [each other] from the side during their hectic schedules, the members recognize each other's roles and positions and support one another. They have the will to do better as an artist, each member is individually going through the process of agonizing about which stage can represent NCT's identity. Mark who participated in the promotions of all the units, says he is still looking for his own color, Winwin who majored in Chinese traditional dance wants to build his own style as a hip-hop dancer. Maknae Haechan who likes intense and powerful stages but knows his voice suits bright and pure moods, and taeyong, his hyung, who understand his characteristics and encourages him by saying 'we just haven't found the right song [that shows your best potential], right'. The nice fact is that everyone still has a lot to show! 'one becomes two and sometimes even 100, let's make the hardened world flexible, look at us, we are free.' like the lyrics of Limitless say, what we need to do to understand these running youths is not observing them with a hardened look, but we should rather look at them as they are.
