No pedophillia or incest please! Also sorry in advance, but I don’t write smut!
I mainly write for Marvel and A:TLA, but will also write for Supernatural, Anne With An E, Sanders Sides and a few others. If you want a fic based off of a different fandom or have a different prompt idea just ask!

The Most Unique Strike In History
THE MOST UNIQUE STRIKE IN HISTORY? In December 2020, the GMB union balloted British Gas field engineers for the right to strike against the Fire and Re Hire the Senior Management have been threatening us with since June2020. 89% of ballot returns voted in favour of industrial action. That is around 5,000 engineers. The company is leading people to believe that over 80% of its employees have already signed up to its new conditions so there is nothing wrong with them. The details they have not included is that the ones who have are Office staff and Contract employees on completely different contracts then the field staff. A good majority of these are receiving small improvements and only the long-term employees that are the minority are losing out. What makes this vote unique is that we are not asking for anything extra from the company. All we want is for them to remove S188 Fire and Re Hire and continue negotiations with the Union. The company have point blankly said they will not engage in any further talks and the clock is ticking until a legally approved final date is issued. So far it has been moved from January 2021 and we believe they will be issuing our new contract to sign on the 31st March2021 with two options. Sign the contract or leave the business. No redundancy as the role is and has been understaffed for years. A huge number of these engineers have only ever worked as an engineer for BG since leaving school and have always envisaged it to be a job for life. Two years ago, the company managed to get through a change to our Final salary pension seeing it cut in half moving forward. Yes, it was a good pension in today’s market, but this was one of the major factors in people staying with the company as it had already been removed to new entrants years ago. I believe they got the numbers required in the vote on this due to a £8k one of payment before tax and NI. Personally, it has reduced my pension by around £11k a year so not great. Unfortunately, many had already become disillusioned with the way the company was going and could not foresee staying until retirement. Senior Management must have seen this as a huge win and I believe this started the wheels in motion for what we are being faced with today, after working through the biggest pandemic in centuries, constantly entering and working in people’s houses and even ones who had tested positive. As a leaked clip recently shows a Senior manager is in tears early on in this pandemic because of what the company is asking us to do for its customers. This has been followed by another leaked clip of various senior managers gloating over the fact that the pandemic and recent events in America have managed to keep the strike almost completely out of the mainstream media. Just Before Christmas 2020 they constantly contacted us which some have seen as bullying and intimidation to pre sign a copy of intent to sign the contract in February. For this you got a sweetener or as they called it a transition payment of either £1k or £2k depending what part of field services you worked in. Also enhanced benefits of extra holiday that was being taken away under the new terms and enhanced bonus scheme that has not even been trailed yet to show if fit for purpose. Those receiving London Weighting or those set to lose it under the new agreement also got this for a few extra years, for some up to £5k. I will now try and summarise the changes I have managed to understand under the new contract for a service and repair engineer. I am still yet to find a single positive for the employee. 1. The average engineer will be losing 4 days annual leave and around 10 rest days. 2. Those who receive London weighting (up to £5.2k) will either loose it completely or see it dramatically reduced. 3. We have been told we earn above market average for our role so will receive no pay rise for a minimum of 3 years guaranteed and could be between 5-10 years without a rise. 4. Our 37-hour week will increase to 40 hours, you will not see an increase in your base pay for these hours so will be effectively taking a pay cut as your hourly rate will reduce. The companies new bonus scheme (CTAP) could if you exceed targets pay for these hours. 5. CTAP the new bonus scheme has not been trailed or tested to see if it is fit for purpose. 6. The sharesave scheme will no longer be available. 7. Being forced to pay for private health insurance otherwise you will only receive statutory sick pay. Also 6 months full and 6 months half pay will change to 3 months at 100% and 9 months at 66% 8. Core hours will change Currently Summer Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm. Winter Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm. Saturday 8am to 6pm and Sunday 8am to 5pm. All days will be 7am to 9pm. 9. No caps on weekend working, Sundays are currently 1 in 6 max. 10. No weekend payment currently around £26 Saturday and £40 Sunday. Depending on roster frequency a loss of just over £1k 11. Start time, at present need to be at collection point or on patch en route to 1st job. New contract you will need to be on your 1stjob at start time and should be within 30mins from home. So technically 30 mins of unpaid hours. You will be told by the system when to collect your parts and allocated the travel time for this. 12. Overtime rates will all be at 1.33% of hourly rate. Currently from 1.25 upto 200% 13. EA (Emergency call out throughout the evening and night) is the biggest hit as going from 200% to 1.33%. 14. Will now be rostered to work on bank holidays and apart from Christmas, Boxing day and NYD will attract no extra payments. 15. Current 6 monthly roster will change to 6 weeks rolling roster making planning your outside time a lot harder. Also, any holiday booked outside the 6-week window will be at 40 hours regardless of what that future shift time will be. 16. Loss of 28/45 hour summer and winter shifts replaced with 32/44 min and max depending on workloads and not summer and winter. 17. Our managers will remain on a 37-hour week and these extra hours will I assume only be covered by a duty manager if they decide to answer the phone. Good luck at 7am and up to 9pm 18. Loss of 3-day weeks in summer when work loads are low. Minimum will be a 4-day week. 19. Work systems are old, and the company have stated that these needs updating to accommodate todays demands. New contract relies on these but no commitment or time scales as to when these will be updated. 20. If an engineer’s performance is below the required new untested target, then a new untested performance management will be used and could result in dismissal within 3 months. 21. Overtime will only be paid once your CTAP balance is positive so could be doing OT just to balance the books. 22. No confirmed details to say if consolidating London weighting will affect pension cap. 23. You will only receive time credits whilst working or if waiting for a job. So, if you have 20mins left on shift and do not want a job then you loose 20mins from CTAP. Also, if you request a job in this time anything could come down and you will be forced to take it and work OT or loose the wait time. 24. QDOS will be no longer so no more payments for selling products and upgrades. You will be allocated a set time into CTAP for this. 25. No commitment to stop contractors picking the best jobs and travel plans. All the company have committed to is looking at this later. Means they get better pay and we lose out n CTAP. 26. Job Recall time currently at 10 days will change to 28 days even if it unrelated. 27. No travel time will be credited if you need to pick up parts from another engineer. So, you will be penalised for doing the right thing for our customer. 28. No more quarterly bonus. 29. Rest day working will only be paid if you have a positive balance in CTAP 30. Business have agreed some long duration time takes a lot longer than the time allocated. Again, no change of this and hopefully something they will look at later. 31. All Training roles have gone and manager/CDMs will coach engineers even though many have been off the tools for ages. 32. If you log a lead and that goes ahead you will still get a recall if we need to go back within 28days. Even if the installer is at fault and not the engineer. 33. CTAP is not in your Terms and Conditions so no collective agreement for the future of this. 34. Some current work tasks will not be left to an engineer’s judgement rather than credit the relevant time to these and protect safety. 35. No longer be able to carry over or sell holiday entitlement. 36. April 2019 the company made a commitment in the pay agreement to 400 new apprentices by 2023, only 48 so far to date. Half the time gone and only 10% of this has been fulfilled.

TV Show Ask Game 1, 3, 5, 7, 9-29, and 31-49.
TV Show Ask Game
Tumblr media
1. if you could reboot one TV show, which one would it be? Earth 2. But only if they could go back in time with the same cast at those ages. It was a brilliant concept that maybe just came ahead of its time.
3. have you ever quit a show before it finished? why? No. But I've wanted to. Once I start something I like to finish it.
5. what’s your comfort show? H20: Just Add Water. I seem to go back to it when I need something light and fun and that doesn't require a ton of thinking in order to enjoy it. I know it's an Australian teenage drama, but I absolutely adore it and the characters.
7. have you ever been inspired to start a new show based on gifs or memes it has produced? The Man From the High Castle and Westworld.
9. what’s one show you thought you’d hate but turned out to really enjoy? Family Guy. I usually don't care for shows with that kind of humor, but it has turned out to be a true gem and favorite of mine.
10. what’s one show you thought you’d love but turned out to really hate? Sons of Anarchy.
11. which TV show has the best musical soundtrack, in your opinion? Cold Case. And Supernatural.
12. have you ever watched a show just for a specific actor? did you enjoy it? I tried to watch Californication because of my love for David Duchovny. I didn't get past season one, and I haven't had the urge to continue it further.
13. what genre of TV show is your favourite? Science-Fiction.
14. do you tend to stick to one type of TV show (eg, short-form comedy), or are you into many different genres? I love a ton of different genres. I mean, sticking to one type is mega boring. And I'm not always in the mood for something funny or drama or sad or whatever. So I like to have options. Lots and lots of options.
15. do you feel like there are any overrated TV show formats? I'm not really sure what this means so I'm not going to comment.
16. do you feel like there are any underrated TV show formats? I'm not really sure what this means so I'm not going to comment.
17. have you ever written fanfiction for a TV show? I started with CSI and The X-Files a long time ago (2004) and still write it today. So yeah. I've written fanfiction for a television show that I love. Several of them in fact. Fifteen years and still going strong.
18. have you ever drawn fanart for a show? I cannot draw to save my life. So the closest thing I've ever drawn for a show was stick figures for The Walking Dead for another ask meme. LOL.
19. are there any shows on your “to watch” list right now? Oh my heck! There are a ton of shows and movies that are on my list to watch at a later date. I even go through it sometimes and delete things that I've added in the past that I know I will never get around to watching. It drives my husband mad to see all the crap in there that never gets watched.
20. Netflix, Hulu, or Prime originals? I happen to like some of all of them, but my favorites just so happen to be Hulu ones. The Handmaid's Tale and Hollie Hobby!
21. if you could be a guest star on any show, which one would it be? The X-Files but that won't ever happen because I'm pretty sure that the show is likely done this time around. I hope anyway. LOL.
22. if you could write your own TV show, what would it be like? A complete disaster. It would be a feel-good show with characters that care more about others around them than anything else. So yeah! A complete disaster. I'll leave the writing to the professionals and stick to writing fanfiction because it's so much easier.
23. are you a fan of will-they-won’t-they plots? Yes, I am. Some of the best ships have come from just that scenario.
24. how do you feel about bottle episodes? I have a love/hate relationship with them. When I haven't seen a character or a couple of characters for a bit, they are fun to play catch up with them, but then I would rather every episode have a little of everyone than focus on one group or character solely.
25. do you prefer proper opening credits, or a simple title card? A simple title card is all that I need because I'm ready to watch the show. I know who stars in it. I don't need to see it every time.
26. favourite TV show theme song? Pretty Little Liars.
27. which actor do you think deserves an Emmy for their work on TV? Melissa McBride and Andrew Lincoln from The Walking Dead.
28. who would be your dream cameo on your favourite show? Kathryn Erbe in the Zombie Apocolypse would be an absolute dream come true! I'd love to see her play in a scene opposite Melissa McBride's Carol.
29. do you tend to quote TV shows a lot? have you ever started using a word/phrase because of a TV show? No, I don't usually quote anything from a TV show unless I'm talking to a fellow fan and we're discussing the show. And I can't think of a time that I've ever taken a phrase from a show/movie and used it in real life. OHHH! Yes, I have! There is a contestant on Survivor that says, "Oh my heck!" and I love that phrase now. LOL.
31. do you use subtitles while watching TV if you can? I will rewind a scene and turn them on if I'm confused about something that is being said, or I'm making a comic strip/photo or gif set where I need the exact quote.
32. what’s one show you could watch over and over? Earth 2, H20: Just Add Water, Mako Mermaids, etc. I could go on and on with some of my favorite feel-good shows.
33. would you be interested in trying a show in another language? I've tried to watch a new series on Netflix, but it just really takes me out of it when I have to read the words. I can't focus on the actions and scenery if I'm constantly having to read the dialogue.
34. what are your top 5 shows right now? The Walking Dead, Law & Order: SVU, Heartland, The Rookie, and 9-1-1.
35. who are your top 5 TV characters right now? Carol Peletier, Lt. Olivia Benson, Athena Grant, Howard 'Chimney' Han, Rookie Officer John Nolan
36. what TV character would you die for? Carol Peletier. But not really.
37. which TV show setting would you most like to visit? The Walking Dead.
38. do you prefer hour long episodes, or 30 minute? It really depends on the material. Sometimes thirty minutes is long enough to tell a complete story, but sometimes, you really need that full hour.
39. do you prefer 22 episode seasons, or 13? It really depends on the show and the story being told.
40. is there a show coming out soon that you’re really excited about? The sixth season of The 100. There is nothing new coming out that I'm that interested in.
41. if you could change 1 detail about any show, what would you change and why? I would change the way in which season four of The Walking Dead was executed so that it made better sense. I wouldn’t necessarily change the main plot points, but I would change how the story was told and would elaborate on whatever needed to be elaborated on so that it made more sense narratively speaking. I believe that certain things had to happen to get the payoff down the road, but the way in which it was written and executed was entirely bogus. Scott Gimple did not trust his audience at all.
42. what’s the longest amount of time you’ve ever watched a show in one sitting? Five plus hours when binge watching ER with my Mom on the weekends.
43. what do you think is a good amount of seasons for a TV show? Six or Seven. But that depends on the show and material for the show. Some shows really can't be wrapped up in that time frame, but some that really should end on a good note. Justified is a wonderful show, but those in charge knew that it was time to let it go. But Supernatural doesn't seem to know that it should end already. The first five or six seasons were brilliant, but it got a little (or a lot) stupid after that.
44. if you could replace any actor on TV in playing their role, who would you like to play and why? I wouldn't want to replace anyone because I absolutely love and adore the people chosen to play their specific roles. I wouldn't want to mess with the chemistry of the cast for even one minute.
45. do you own any TV shows on DVD? I own several shows on DVD. Too many to list.
46. do you prefer to watch TV alone or with friends? Alone because if you watch with friends there is too much talking going on.
47. are there any shows you love but your friends aren’t interested in? Like almost everything. LOL. My tastes and theirs do not usually mesh. It's rare that we have overlapping interest in a show.
48. are there any shows your friends love but you aren’t interested in? Yes. Just about as many of my shows as their shows, honestly.
49. who are your favourite couples on TV? Well, most of them are really canon ships, but there is Carol & Daryl from The Walking Dead, Olivia Benson and Rafael Barba from SVU, Regina Mills and Robin of Locksley from Once Upon a Time, Mulder and Scully from The X-Files. There are several more, but I think those are plenty to list right now. I have an otps page if you'd like to see the ones that I love the most. Oh! Han & Leia from Star Wars.

Open The Gates For Global Tax And Accounting By Using These Simple Tips
The contrast is even more placing when contemplating the so-referred to as “participation tax charge,” which is the effective average tax price on labor pressure participation when accounting for the distortions resulting from earnings taxes, payroll taxes, consumption taxes, and means-tested transfers. In distinction to the U.S. The U.S. does not deserve a free pass on CBT and FATCA any more than the outdated South African authorities deserved a free move for its heinous apartheid policies. June 16 - CNBC (Silvia Amaro): “The international financial system is on observe for a more vital contraction than the Worldwide Monetary Fund estimated in April, the institution’s chief economist mentioned… June 15 - Wall Street Journal (Christopher M. Matthews and Andrew Scurria): “Banks are slashing credit traces to shale drillers, as an oil-price crash and wells which have failed to supply as much as predicted pressure a painful reassessment of companies’ belongings. June 18 - Wall Street Journal (Will Parker): “Rents in San Francisco, the most expensive house market within the U.S., are tumbling because the city’s vaunted tech sector sheds jobs and extra tenants go away the city. ‘I would simply note that there are something like 25m individuals who have been dislodged from their jobs both in full or in part because of the pandemic,’ Mr Powell advised the House financial services committee… But we should always notice something else.

Wazney, 529 F.2d 1287 (ninth Cir.1976). June 18 - CNN (Madeline Holcombe and Ray Sanchez): “Ten states noticed a record quantity of latest Covid-19 circumstances this week, and considered one of them could possibly be the subsequent epicenter of the nationwide well being disaster. Nature Medicine. Researchers examined 37 asymptomatic people, those who by no means developed signs, in the Wanzhou District of China. It finds that just 14% of American adults say they’re very completely happy, down from 31% who stated the identical in 2018. That yr, 23% said they’d typically or sometimes felt remoted in current weeks.
The researchers discovered folks without symptoms had a weaker antibody response than these with signs. After Proton was offered to Geely, Dr Mahathir mentioned he was saddened, but in 2014, it was he who travelled to China to meet the manufacturer to hunt a Proton partnership, a bid which ultimately fell via. It as effectively takes into consideration the compliance costs by taxable individuals, especially those that conduct cross-border transactions versus domestic. In conclusion, it is clear that TP itself needs a elementary re-suppose and that the ALP arm’s-length precept while good in idea doesn't pan out well in follow. The issue is that many subnational governments (i.e., state, provincial or local governments) as effectively federal governments have a tough time enforcing their tax techniques exterior of their borders. Federal Reserve has started shopping for company bonds within the secondary market, nevertheless it isn’t the primary of its friends to take action. IWTAS.com New York USA Even a defibrillator was ineffective.
Countries are understandably wanting to open up their societies and their economies. The cabinet indicated that the government will keep liquidity ample by slicing the required reserved ratio (RRR) - the amount of cash banks are required to carry - and re-lending, whereas guiding market interest rates lower… Many contact us with an curiosity in new investments, mergers and acquisitions; they ask us to support them within the due diligence of their targets, their accounting and tax integration and also to help maximize the tax incentives available for his or her business. Economists say this raises big questions on how the burden of servicing the debt mountain might be shared; how the related surge in bond issuance will affect markets; and what the long-time period impact on development will probably be. Right here is the basic difficulty: The last few many years have witnessed increased quantities of cross-border shopper gross sales of products and providers in part on account of tech developments like enhanced mail-order sales. The U.S. is extra deeply divided in the present day than it has been in decades. If the size of time runs out for a particular tax year, then the IRS is ceaselessly barred from claiming that you simply owe extra tax in that yr. The statute prescribes the size of time permitted to the IRS to enforce the tax rules.
China is claimed to have mobilized its 100,000-robust infection tracing pressure. The feasibility research examines issues of the present VAT mannequin in force and the level of EU VAT fraud. It additionally really useful that Dr Mahathir and Anwar be investigated for criminal breach of trust and fraud. Limitations intervals for tax-related offenses will likely be tolled while the taxpayer has absconded or is outdoors the United States; and on civil legal responsibility additionally the place a fraudulent return or no return has been filed. Another problem involves what is supposed by “fleeing from justice”? Will the statute of limitations be tolled (suspended) merely as a result of the defendant is residing outdoors the US, as is typical within the case of expatriates? Or, must the defendant have an intent to keep away from prosecution or arrest quite than simply being absent from the jurisdiction? The minority view is that mere absence from the jurisdiction is ample to toll the statute. Thus, mere absence from the US (no matter intent) will not be sufficient to toll the criminal SOL for FBAR violations.
That is a very fascinating question and one ought to ask whether or not the FBAR SOL can be suspended for both criminal and civil issues. Plus, the IRS not too long ago amended the IRM to make clear the procedures for the IRS Appeals Office to overview FBAR penalties. The statute of limitations on assessment of civil FBAR penalties is 6 years from the date of the violation. The notice and demand for payment should be made within sixty days of the assessment. FBAR civil statutes of limitation on assessment and collection may be waived. In line with this view (aka 'code is legislation'), some governments are looking for to increase their tax jurisdiction over remote gross sales with the assistance from an automatic on-line tax assortment system. So actually all I’ve executed above is to group the pursuits into three classes that, it was claimed, are broadly shared with different law and know-how evaluation: the categories are fuzzy and fairly apparent (self-evident?) in order that their utilization could permit a conversation amongst lawyers and researchers in different tech legislation discipline; a tax lawyer could study from a patent lawyer and vice versa (Gaia’s posts discussed some of the problems associated with this approach).
On this case, a radical authorized change is thought to be wanted to confront the challenges posed by expertise change-state governments have been ready to sacrifice one set of values (fiscal sovereignty) to salvage another (the want to inhibit tax revenue losses) by way of a expertise is law method. This creator feels that a 3-pronged approach may go - first is to introduce sector-vast safe harbors which one believes the federal government is engaged on and is great information for the trade. This could work by prescribing revenue %’s for each sector tied to a published industry-broad index. How does the SOL Work for FBAR Purposes? The only reference to “transaction with respect to which the penalty is assessed” is the failure to file the FBAR itself. FBAR and OVDP sticks they already beat their CBT victims with, merely refuse to problem America on fundamental moral grounds and it is flawed. But, this new article maybe ought to give us some concern and should fan the fears of many that the majority "nonprecedential" decision in Williams is heading other panels and other courts in the fallacious direction.
Tax points we assist purchasers with embrace: Tax disputes & tax appeals with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Tax disputes & tax appeals with the provincial Ministry of Revenue Audit notices from the CRA or a Request for Information If you're dealing with a tax declare or imagine you might be owed tax from the authorities, we can give you the strategic authorized recommendation you want. Surprise, surprise - there aren't any quantifications for these filters and the result is the whole train usually devolves into something farcical the place the Department cherry-picks its comparables justifying a high profit % and the assessee picks its own set of comparables with a % close to its profit % after which both begin bartering i.e., give and take of comparables. And he expects the number of merely giant bankruptcies - at the very least $100 million - to problem the report set the year after the 2008 economic crisis. Edward I. After years of deliberation, governments with the Group for Co-operation and Development (OECD) have agreed that they won’t tax profits from overseas Web companies except these companies sell goods or providers by way of a computer server (i.e., a pc that has been networked to the Web) located within the consumer’s country (extra technically, the OECD mannequin tax treaty Commentaries have been amended to replicate this new rule). This was, to put it charitably, an unhelpful coverage change as it should promote aggressive tax planning and, more importantly, not ensure a good sharing of tax revenues between countries-there at the moment are tens of thousands and thousands of servers world wide that might serve as nexus for international earnings tax purposes. ‘The world is in a brand new and harmful phase,’ said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director normal of the W.H.O.

From CNBC: “Earlier this week, Republican Gov. Total Checkable Deposits surged $79.2bn, whereas Savings Deposits rose $23.7bn. June 14 - Reuters (Huizhong Wu, Gabriel Crossley and Kevin Yao): “China’s industrial output rose for a second straight month in Might but the achieve was smaller than expected, suggesting the economic system remains to be struggling to get back on monitor after the coronavirus crisis. Today’s put up will attempt to indicate how this categorization course of may help students in different expertise law areas enter right into a dialog with one another to provoke a deeper understanding of their own fields of research.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #233 - National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: No.
Format: Blu-ray
1) There are five theatrical films in the Vacation franchise, this is the only one I’ve seen. I’ve never seen the need to see the other ones, honestly. This one’s already good enough.
2) The opening animation over which the credits is a strong start to the film. It establishes a classic Christmas vibe and silly/slapstick humor. There’s nothing particularly PG-13 about the animation, just PG. It’s not raunchy or rude, just funny. I think that’s an important thing because it’s what makes Christmas Vacation as good as it is. Not the occasional raunch (which is very limited, I think) but instead the silly family elements. Not to mention it sets up a great original song.
youtube
3) The opening carols scene in the car with the Griswold clan does well to establish that dynamic. Clark is a little TOO enthusiastic but it’s sincere, Ellen is supportive, and the kids are kind of over it all.
Tumblr media
4) This first encounter with the truckers is very strong. It shows two of the films best comedic elements: Clark’s ability to take things too far and then the build of it. Each choice makes the situation worse and worse leading to an inevitable, unexpected, hysterical climax to the scene.
Tumblr media
5) I love Ellen.
Ellen: “Clark, stop it! I don’t wanna spend the holidays DEAD!”
6) Honestly, there are a lot of great little dialogue exchanges in the movie. I dig it.
Ellen: “Clark.”
Clark: “Yes honey?”
Ellen: “Audrey’s frozen from the waist down.”
Clark: “That’s all part of the experience, honey.”
7) When you make a comedy, you HAVE to have a good sense of humor. That’s the entire point! This film succeeds there. It’s odd, ridiculous, slapstick, and silly. Born from escalating problems and crazy “solutions” as well as a nice element of absurdity humor. Clark’s sticky fingers, everything on Christmas Eve, the sled, it all lends itself to this idea.
8) Julia Louise Dreyfus is in this movie. That is all.
Tumblr media
9) Of course Chevy Chase is great in this movie, he’s freaking Chevy Chase! But Beverly D’Angelo is equally as good.
Tumblr media
While the straighter of the two actors, the one who sees more clearly, D’Angelo gets a number of clever and hysterical moments in the film. She has a great chemistry with Chevy Chase but helps to make her Ellen MORE than Mrs. Griswold. She’s her own character, full of life and personality, patience and flaws, just truly wonderful.
10) I always like that Clark has a Tasmanian Devil coffee mug. It speaks to his fun energy as a character.
Tumblr media
11) I never really got why Clark lies to Mary about not being married. It gives Chase a funny outlet to play flustered, but there’s nothing in this film which suggests to me he’d cheat on Ellen.
Tumblr media
12) The arrival of the extended Griswold clan is perfectly done. A clear sense of family conflict and insanity is conveyed not only by the performances but the quick editing and off kilter camera angles. It’s very well done.
13)
Clark: “Russ, when was the last time I overdid anything?”
Tumblr media
14) Remember how I said Beverly D’Angelo is crazy funny?
Audrey: “Do you sleep with your brother? Do you know how sick and twisted that is?”
Ellen: “Well I’m sleeping with your father.”
15) Much of this film benefits from a pacing that allows us to check in with the whole family here and there, supporting its heart and characters.
16) I actually analyzed the scene where Chevy Chase falls off the roof for a Physics for Filmmakers class. The class was horrible but I had fun with the project. I’d share some of what I wrote but it’s long and boring. Basically the gist of it is the ice can’t travel to the gutter like that but also the velocity of the gutter changes between shots.
youtube
17) I don’t know why, but my family always quotes this line like crazy.
Margot: “And why is the carpet wet, TOD?”
Tod: “I don’t KNOW Margot!”
18) Clark’s failed lights attempt.
Tumblr media
There are two things which stand out in this scene: Clark’s in-laws are freaking awful and his immediate family are great. The in laws just relentlessly mock Clark leading Audrey to stand up for her dad.
Audrey: “He worked really hard, Grandma.”
I love that. I love seeing Audrey getting to show some real love and support for her dad instead of being sidelined as a stereotypical teenage girl. It’s freaking great.
19) Clark in the attic.
youtube
Firstly, Clark’s mother in law is an idiot. “Oh, the ladder to the attic is open. It must’ve just fallen or something, there can’t be ANY way a person is up there. I shouldn’t check or anything.” Jerk.
But most importantly, the attic scene is the best representation of the film’s heart. Holiday movies need a good heart to it, good emotion, otherwise they’re just a lazy cash grab. This film’s heart, its focus on family and familial love, are one of the reasons it has held up as well as it has 28 years later. Clark’s sentiment over watching old home movies, supported by a great Ray Charles song, is one of the best parts of the film.
20)
Clark: “Honey, you honestly think I’d check thousands of tiny little lights if I wasn’t sure it was plugged in?”
Tumblr media
21) The fact that the solution to the problem with the lights is so abundantly simple is great. Also relatable. How many of us have plugged something into the wrong plug and obsessed over what was wrong?
Tumblr media
22) Cousin Eddie just showing up when he does helps give the film an extra bit of energy to propel it in its last hour. Honestly if we had stuck with what was going on with no change or development it might’ve gotten a little dull, but Eddie is just a perfect source of fun family conflict.
23) Some of Clark’s asides when Eddie shows up are just freaking hysterical.
Clark: “If I woke up tomorrow with my head seen to the carpet I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am right now.”
24) Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie.
Tumblr media
Eddie is this film’s ultimate scene stealer. Quaid, reprising his role from the first Vacation film, plays Eddie as totally sincere and honest. Yes he’s a dumbass, yes he causes problems, but there is not a hint of malice in his performance and that’s important. You need to like Eddie, despite his idiocy, you need to root for him along with the other characters. He’s a sweet guy, he just causes a lot of problems, and he fits perfectly with the rest of the cast.
25) Brian Doyle Murray as Mr. Shirley is a great Scrooge-like character in this film. You understand he’s pretty much a pill before you even learn what he did about Christmas bonuses.
Tumblr media
26) The saucer sledding scene is crazy fun, but I never got how Cousin Eddie and the kids were able to see Clark go as far as he did. Like, we see him go through woods where no one else is, across a highway, and into a WalMart. And they’re just up on the hill reacting?
Tumblr media
27) Clark’s pool fantasy.
Tumblr media
The key part to this fantasy is not the presence of a pool, but how happy it makes his family. Clark doesn’t want to let anyone down. He wants to be a traditional patriarch and provide for his family. To not succeed 100% feels like a failing to him, that’s why the pool is so important to him.
28) The conversation Clark and Ruby Sue have together about Santa Claus continues to show off the film’s heart but mores how it balances heart and humor. There’s some crass language mixed in but it doesn’t undermine the emotion of the scene.
29) And now it’s Christmas Eve, and EVERYTHING on Christmas Eve is just one big problem after another. The night descends further and further into chaos before the movie is over which is truly freaking great!
30) Aunt Bethany and Uncle Lewis are a great late addition to the film. For animation fans, the actress who plays Aunt Bethany is also Betty Boop and Uncle Lewis is Dr. Finklestein from The Nightmare Before Christmas. They’re totally nuts, nonsensical, and just fun to watch.
Tumblr media
31) All the cat-in-the-box movement is done by Chevy Chase.
Tumblr media
32) That Turkey is SO dry!
Tumblr media
All the crunching is so uncomfortably funny, leading into a hysterical extended dinner table scene which is a lot of fun.
33) Honestly these next batch of notes are going to be commenting on how each gag works so well. For example: the dad cat gag, for some reason, is extremely funny!
34) Ah, the Christmas bonus.
youtube
This scene is so freaking great. The entire film set it up, we’ve been waiting for this bonus. Meaning the surprise of it is as great for the audience as it is for Clark. The big setup, how much is riding on the bonus, means the fall is even greater. And Chevy Chase’s rant is one of the greatest movie rants EVER! I love it.
35) Clark’s following mania is great to watch, specifically the hilarity and insanity of the squirrel chase.
Tumblr media
36) I’m just gonna leave this here.
Clark: “This is a full blown four alarm Holiday emergency here! We’re going to press on and we’re gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny FUCKING Kaye!”
37) The heart to heart between Clark and his dad is a nice reclaiming of the heart that Clark almost lost with his rant. And just when everything seems okay…
38) Eddie happens.
Tumblr media
39) I love Ellen.
Ellen: “I’m sorry, this is our family’s first kidnapping.”
40) The police response seems a little excessive, but I guess when a wealthy white guy is kidnapped they bring out the freaking marines.
41) Where Ellen’s hand is in this scene (and where it returns to) was improvised by Beverly D’Angelo.
Tumblr media
42) And despite the movie ending on a joke, the ending does have a nice sweetness to it. A sincerity about the madness of the holiday spirit and its equal success.
Tumblr media
Christmas Vacation is a holiday treat that grows better with time. The humor is supported by a strong cast and equally strong heart. Chevy Chase is obviously great, but other cast members such as Beverly D’Angelo and Randy Quaid get their time to steal the show. Filled with endlessly iconic holiday movie moments, it’s a great treat for the holiday season.

The Promises I Made (2017-2018)
For the past eleven years, I have spent every New Year’s Eve compiling a list of fifty promises I intend to keep or fulfill over the next twelve months. The results have been truly amazing, and I have kept some promises I never thought I could. This year, for New Year’s, there will be a new set of promises for to me keep, but here are the old ones, for review!
The Promises I Made (2017 edition)
1) I will get a(nother) new job. Or probably just curl up and die. Status: Kept! I got a new job and moved to Texas. 2) I will translate at least one more month’s worth of Regenkatze. Status: Broken. T_T I did a few pages, but I didn’t get far. 3) I will repot all my plants that need repotting. Finally. Status: Kept, amazingly. 4) I will buy actual freakin’ curtains that I like for my house, RAWR. Status: Broken. I bought no curtains this year. D; 5) I will continue to utilize Plant Nanny to track my water intake and keep myself from getting dehydrated. Status: Broken. I was okay at the beginning of the year, but then the usage dwindled. 6) I will complete at least one craft project that requires me to utilize a new skill, like working with a new material. Status: Broken. I didn’t do anything really crafty this year… too busy moving. 7) I will repair the mortar on the fence out front and seal the bricks on the window sills. Status: Broken—ditto the above. Moved out and wasn’t able to really keep any of these promises about my Utah house. 8) I will finish at least 26 books over the course of this year. Status: …I read a lot of fanfiction. A lot. But not too many new published books. Made it to maybe ten counting the readings I had to do for World Lit class but other than that, nothing close to 26. 9) I will trim the grape vine and call the city to see about cleaning out behind the house because the water culvert is flooding into my yard and jeopardizing my garage. Status: Actually kept! It needs to be trimmed again, but yes, I was able to trim it down and keep it from flooding. 10) I will successfully pass Horsemanship II. Status: Kept. 11) I will broaden my music tastes this year by getting into at least three new bands that I have never heard of or in genres that I don’t normally listen to. Status: Kept! I got into a few new K-pop bands and also Spellblast. 12) I will do the laundry at least once every two weeks. I swear it!! Status: Uh… Somewhat kept? At the new house in Texas I have to wear nicer clothes to work so I have to do laundry more often, but I don’t know about at least once every two weeks… 13) I will finish my new Anime Expo costume early and not wait until the last moment! Status: Broken—I didn’t cosplay at all this year. D; 14) I will remove all the rocks from in front of my house because they are hella ugly. Status: Broken; see above about moving out of Utah and no longer being able to work on the Utah house much. 15) I will go to a dentist and get Invisalign or some work done to fix my front left tooth. Status: Broken. I swapped jobs and had to wait for my benefits to restart and then by that time it wasn’t a good time to get dental work done. 16) I will have at least a once weekly “game night” with my roommates. Could be fun. Status: Broken… I think that um… we played a few times. 17) I will replace the battery in my watch, finally. Status: Kept! 18) I will pay off at least half my credit card debt. Important adult thing, yo. Status: Broken, sooooo broken. T_T It just got worse, not better. D; 19) I will learn at least 100 new words in German and document them as I go to keep them fresh in my memory. Status: Broken. I totally forgot that I even made this promise… 20) I will keep up with my new book club as long as it is possible for me to attend (I.e., if I don’t move). Status: Kept. The book club kinda fell apart pretty quick, but I kept up with it until it did. 21) I will be better about walking my dog because I have been slacking lately. Status: Broken, I’m so sorry Kinguin… It’s sooo hot in Texas. 22) I will build a new PC to replace the desktop computer that my dog destroyed. SLFSFJNDFG. Still angry. Status: Broken. Moving sapped all my money away, so I could not afford a new PC. T_T 23) I will get the scratched lenses removed from my glasses and change the prescription on the orange pair of glasses too. Status: Broken. See the above deal with the new benefits not kicking in for 90+ days.
24) Also: I will get my black glasses fixed so that they stop FALLING OFF and flying into the every nearby rock and sharp pointy object… Status: Broken. T_T
25) I will obtain at least one six-star hero in Tales of Link. Don’t look at me like that. Status: Broken—I haven’t played Tales of Link in months. @_@
26) I will design at least ten outfits and post them. (I’m still trying with this one, dammit.) Status: Broken. …I guess I should probably just give up on this one…
27) I will organize my closets, especially the hall closet which looks like a bomb went off. Status: Broken. I moved out of my Utah house which did involve cleaning out the closets, but um… the closets at the new house might be just as bad now…
28) I will actually utilize the stupid Paint Tool Sai that I paid for. At least three fully colored artworks this year. Status: Broken. I was able to draw nothingggg this year. T_T
29) I will level all my battle classes to 70 in Stormblood. Status: Surprisingly broken. I wasn’t able to play much at all after July so my time for leveling just plummeted.
30) I will reach 700 followers on tumblr. You should follow me. I’m only marginally a waste of time and space. Status: Kept! I have 861 followers right now! Thanks everyone for the follows! :D
31) I will learn to make a new (delicious) cocktail or two. Status: Broken. I drank a new delicious cocktail but I didn’t make any myself.
32) I will lose ten pounds. Status: Somewhat kept? I don’t think I made it to a full 10 pounds but I did noticeably lose some weight.
33) I will reach at least 300 species on my birding life list. Status: Kept! I’m at 306 currently, thanks to making to Texas and seeing a bunch of new birdies. 34) I will win NaNoWriMo this year. (But pretend that I didn’t, to not disrupt my blue-purple-blue-purple NaNo site pattern. XDD) Status: Broken. I didn’t even get to like 5,000 words. T_T 35) I will obtain the Astrope mount in FFXIV. Status: HA. I think I’m at like 200/1000 for mentor roulettes. Broken. 36) I will see at least one new bird species in the wild that is not native to the United States. Status: Hmmm, not sure what I was thinking about for this one, but I did not succeed.
37) I will put a storm door on the side door of my house because water is leaking in (due to lack of said screen door) and causing damage! Status: Gonna count this as somewhat kept because I did try to get a storm door installed, but they wanted to charge me $300 just to install the door and I didn’t have the money at the time. But I did fix the gap beneath the door so that it no longer leaks.
38) I will visit Nicaragua. Status: Broken. T_T I had the chance but things were so bad at work I didn’t want to blow my vacation in case I needed it… And I did end up needing it, so things worked out.
39) I will water my plants more consistently and take better care of them—to the point where the one orchid that hasn’t bloomed in years will bloom again! Status: Uh… somewhat kept? Namely, I moved and left my plants in Utah, but they’re being taken care of by others so they’re alive at least still.
40) I will write at least four new chapters of my Voltron fic. Status: Kept!
41) I will get duct work done to bring heat to the downstairs bathroom and side bedroom. Status: Broken… But we did get a bigger heater for the downstairs so at least it was warmer down there this year.
42) I will update my calendar with important dates—holidays, birthdays, etc.—and be productive about sending cards and well-wishes. Status: Uh… broken. I forgot I made this promise too.
43) I will complete my series of posts about Yato/Hiyori. Really. Status: T_______T One day. One day. Broken. 44) I will pamper myself more—spa day at least once a month! Status: Somewhat kept? Maybe like barely kept. I was good at this for the first couple months, but then it tapered off. 45) I will visit my out-of-town friends more often and make better efforts to stay in more frequent contact. Status: I think I’ll mark this as kept. I visited more people this year, anyway, including @rachelwritesstories! 46) I will make sure the lawn stays decently mowed this year instead of being embarrassingly tall and weedy. Status: Hrm… Somewhat broken/somewhat kept? I did move, but apparently the lawn has been at least somewhat consistently mowed since I’ve been gone. 47) I will do some work on my laundry room to make it look less like a dungeon. Status: Broken. The dungeon persists. 48) I will revise TVR, especially the early chapters, and move it to AO3. Status: Broken. I got like maybe 1/3 of the way through revising the first chapter. Um… maybe in time for KH3 or something? :C
49) I will get an electric tree trimmer to make trimming my trees out front much easier. Status: Kept.
50) I will keep these promises. Status: Mostly broken. T_T
Totals Kept promises: 12 Broken promises: 31 Somewhat kept/broken promises: 7
Jesus, I thought I was glad to see the back-side of 2016… 2016 had nothing on the roller coaster of a year that 2017 was. What a literal dumpster fire. While politics and the environment went haywire around me, my job situation grew untenable again (ooh, but hilarious karma—just last month they fired the shitty boss and REHIRED my old awesome boss… Except of course by then I had already, you know, quit and moved across the country to pursue a whole new career field… Well, c’est la vie!) and I ended up packing up everything and completely changing my life once again…
In just the last two years I’ve swapped career fields twice and randomly packed up and moved to Texas of all places. I experienced the drama of prepping for a hurricane and also got to see it snow in Mexico. Life’s weird.
Looking back on these promises, I honestly don’t feel too bad that so many of them were broken this year. I really had no idea what was going to happen in 2017 when I made last year’s promises, and so a lot of the goals ended up not matching up with my reality in the end. At the end of the day though, I feel like I’m in a much better place today than I was at the end of 2016.
I don’t think 2018 is going to be easy, but I do think it is going to be better, and that’s a good feeling to have. Let’s do this! The new set of promises will be up by tomorrow.

21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles
Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles — formerly 20 Fantasy Thoughts — from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
  1. It has been a downright awful week for Frederik Andersen (I’m experiencing this firsthand), but at least he earned a win on Friday. It’s not often that a goalie earns a win after allowing six goals, but that’s the kind of game it was.
Andersen was pulled in his previous two starts after allowing four goals before the midway point of each game. He’ll probably be fine over the long haul, though he could be wearing down a bit after an extremely heavy workload. Entering Saturday action, Andersen had a higher save total (1584) than any goalie, while only Connor Hellebuyck had faced more shots than Andersen (1725).
If defense wins championships, then the Leafs will have a tough time making it out of the Atlantic the way their blue line is currently constructed. (mar16)
  2. Since being traded to the Leafs about a month and a half ago, Jake Muzzin has 14 points (4g-10a) in 23 games, so he’s already been more productive with Toronto than he was with Los Angeles (21 points in 50 games). This in spite of logging about a minute and a half less ice time with the Leafs than he had with the Kings. So, fewer minutes, but the minutes have been more productive. (mar16)
  3. I’ll agree with colleague Adam Daly-Frey in his most recent Looking Ahead: Don’t be afraid to drop Jonathan Drouin if you’ve been debating the idea.
Drouin was held without a point again on Saturday, which means that he has been held without a point in his last eight games and 15 of his last 16 games. He did record four assists in that one game, and he had recorded nine points in the three games prior to the deep freeze. However, we are now in the thick of the ‘what-have-you-done-for-me-lately’ portion of the season. (mar17)
  4. I grabbed Vinnie Hinostroza in one league and added him to my lineup, literally forgetting about him until Thursday night, when he recorded a hat trick while firing eight shots on goal and leading the Coyotes to yet another win. Sometimes, forgetting is a good thing because I could have just as well removed him after he went four games without a point earlier in the month.
Since January 20, Hinostroza has 11 goals and 21 points in 25 games, which easily makes him the highest-scoring Yote during a stretch in which Arizona has fought their way into a Western Conference playoff spot. So, that means he’s been playing with the Coyotes’ big guns (whoever they may be), right? Sure, if their names are Brad Richardson and Michael Grabner. The Coyotes don’t offer much else when it comes to scoring, unfortunately. (mar15)
  5. Blackhawks’ Brendan Perlini is cruising after some tough times earlier this season. Perlini recorded just four points (3g-1a) in his first 29 games with the Blackhawks after being traded from Arizona.
Since then, he has been red hot with eight goals and 10 points over his last seven games, including another goal on Saturday. It helps that Perlini has recently been matched up with Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome, both of whom have been scoring at about a point per game as Blackhawks. (mar17)
  6. Anaheim rookie Troy Terry won Third Star from the NHL last week for his two goals and five assists.
I had a lot of hope at the outset of the season for many of Anaheim’s rookies, namely Sam Steel. Terry has loads of skill but I was concerned about him being stuck behind Corey Perry, Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase, whereas I saw Steel as the potential 3C. Needless to say, that hasn’t exactly worked out.
Terry’s fantasy upside is a fair debate because he’s not a guy who has shot much in the AHL (92 shots in 41 games), or the NHL (20 shots in 23 games). As a rookie, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt but there aren’t a lot of guys who can have significant fantasy relevance while averaging under two shots per game. From what I can tell, there is one skater in the top-100 players in standard Yahoo! leagues averaging under two shots per game, and that’s Brandon Tanev, and he’s exactly the 100th player – he also has 232 hits, a total which Terry may not amass in his entire NHL career.
Again, there is time and room for growth here. Terry has played well since Randy Carlyle was replaced (as the team has been better), so there’s lots to be encouraged about here for 2019-20. (mar12)
  7. Vince Dunn scored twice for the Blues in Saturday’s victory – goals number 10 and 11 from him. While Jordan Binnington is receiving a ton of the credit for the Blues’ turnaround, we should also give props to the defense.
The Blues currently have three defensemen with double-digit goal totals: Alex Pietrangelo (12), Dunn (11) and Colton Parayko (10). As of Saturday afternoon, no other team had more than two. As well, the Blues were leading the NHL with 44 goals from defensemen.
In just his second NHL season, Dunn has been quietly productive, reaching the 30-point mark in 67 games. (mar17)
  8. We will need to wait at least one week for the debut of Canucks’ hotshot prospect, Quinn Hughes. As a result of an injury from last weekend’s University of Michigan game, Hughes has a bone bruise and was to wear a walking boot for at least a week.
The silver lining is that with his NHL debut being delayed, Vancouver fans won’t have to worry about the team inadvertently sticking him in the lineup for more than 10 games, which would make him eligible for the Seattle expansion draft. There should be absolutely no rush on the Canucks’ part to get Hughes into the lineup. (mar15)
  9. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hughes makes an impact quickly once he gets some NHL action. The Canucks are desperate for a puck-moving defenseman. I posted my Top 50 Fantasy Prospect Defensemen this past week and Hughes is No.2 on that list. (mar11)
  10. So, it’s that time of year where guys who are property of a franchise, be it in college or overseas, start making their way to the NHL to get some games in.
One guy dynasty owners were hoping for was Vitali Kravtsov, the 19-year old Rangers first rounder from the same draft. It appears that his KHL team will not terminate his contract, allowing him to join New York this season. Rangers fans and fantasy owners are going to have to wait until next season to possibly see him in the lineup. (mar13)
Now, over to you, Dante Fabbro. (mar11)
  11. If you were counting on Antoine Roussel for a few points and a lot of penalty minutes, he is done for the year with a knee injury suffered Wednesday. Roussel was receiving second-line minutes with Bo Horvat and, as of Thursday morning, was second in the NHL with 118 penalty minutes.
The Roussel news seemed to be overshadowed on Vancouver sports talk radio by the topic of Loui Eriksson’s first healthy scratch as a Canuck. There’s a very short list of players that have less value than Eriksson in a salary cap league. If you can think of any, feel free to list them in the comments below.
Mercifully, this could be the beginning of the end for Eriksson in Vancouver, though a buyout this offseason will hardly help the Canucks financially.  Eriksson also has a full no-trade on his contract, which has a $6 million cap hit. Ugh. (mar15)
  12. Caps’ Brett Connolly is just one goal away from reaching 20 for the first time in his career, while he has already set a career high with 40 points. The 2010 sixth overall pick hasn’t lived up to his draft-day potential and is already on his third NHL team, but he’s still showing signs of having a productive career (though I’m not as sold on him for fantasy purposes as others might be). (mar15)
  13. If you’ve been carrying Kyle Turris this long, you’re safe to drop him for any more immediate help. Turris was ‘healthy scratched’ for each of the Preds’ last two games, Thursday and Saturday.
With just seven goals and 22 points in 46 games, Turris has produced less than half a point per game. Surely, you can do better for your fantasy team, particularly at the center position. This is not the kind of production that the Predators should expect from their second-line center as they near the playoffs. (mar15)
  14. It might be a little too late for the Panthers to make the playoffs, so they are seeing what they have with young goalie Samuel Montembeault. The rookie has made four consecutive starts, all wins. Still, unless the Panthers find a way to get out of either Roberto Luongo’s or James Reimer’s contract this offseason, it’s difficult to forecast where Montembeault fits in long-term. (mar15)
Montembeault is a goalie that I have been a fan of for quite some time. Right now, he is Florida’s best option in the pipeline and, since this is a young team on the rise (yeah, I’ve said this for two years now but it’s gonna happen), this could end up being the perfect storm. (mar11)
  15. It's been a poor year for most Devils, though injuries are certainly a factor. With that said, it’s been a sublime season for Damon Severson. His 11 goals are a career-high, as are his 37 points (he had 31 in 2016-17). He’s been hard to roster in leagues counting plus-minus but has been very solid otherwise. With him and Will Butcher, there are nice pieces on the Devils’ blue line.
  16. There was a good Ramblings over at Dobber Prospects this past week from Jokke Nevalainen discussing, among many other things, Kaapo Kakko and Aleksi Heponiemi.
That second name seems to be a forgotten prospect to some people as Henrik Borgstrom solidifies himself with the Panthers but, as Jokke points out, Heponiemi is among the Liiga scoring leaders and just turned 20 in January.
This has been a spectacular season for Heponiemi and if he can crack the roster in October, could go a long way in lengthening the lineup and making Florida even more dangerous offensively. There are a lot of bridges to cross between now and then but it’s still a very solid effort from the young Finn. (mar13)
  17. Just before his arm injury this past week, Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was having a very solid year in this his second full season, helping the Bruins drive the play forward and being a good starting point for their attack.
Luckily, the injury doesn’t seem to be too severe and he should be back soon. Not that he’s a key cog because they do have guys like Torey Krug, Charlie McAvoy and John Moore, but having more good puck-moving defenseman is never a bad thing. (mar13)
  18. I was a big believer in Brandon Saad’s rebound from last year and he’s currently sitting with 23 goals and should probably have more. Assists are a problem (just 18) and the lack of PP production, as it has been for most of his career, is an ongoing issue. He’s still a very good five-on-five player, though even I’ll admit that at this point he’s a better real-world player than fantasy option. (mar13)
  19. It’s as if signing the big contract has helped Jakob Silfverberg turn the corner. He has points nine points in the eight games since. And that’s on a team that is really just not scoring.
We know this song and dance already, though. Every year without fail, in either the first or the second half, Silfverberg produces like a 70-point player. In the other half of the season, he produces like a 20-point player. If only we could get an advanced heads up on which half will be which.
With GM Bob Murray coaching the team right now, I feel pretty comfortable with Silf continuing for the duration. Murray needs to make his latest big signing look like a good one and you can see it in Jakob’s minutes – both at ES and on the PP. (mar11)
  20. Jared McCann also had two points Sunday and he has eight in his last seven games.
I remember when poolies jumped on Jared McCann really quickly when he surprisingly made the Canucks as a 19-year-old in 2015. He was rushed. The Stratford native (as am I) is now in his fourth NHL season, though he was mostly in the minors for one of them, so I consider this his third.
These days, he’s clicking with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel. We’ve learned from Conor Sheary (and going further back – Colby Armstrong) that there is no guarantee with this plum placement. I do have more confidence in McCann’s upside and pedigree than I had with Sheary, though. And 10 times out of ten, I would roll the dice on just the ‘chance’ that it continues on into next season. (mar11)
  21. One big injury update from Wednesday was that Ottawa star defenceman Thomas Chabot has been diagnosed with a broken toe and is week-to-week. The team has 12 games left and were this any other organization, I would say that rushing back the franchise cornerstone player from a broken bone in a completely lost season so he can suit up with an AHL roster isn’t possible. But this is Ottawa, so whatever the worst possible option is, it’s definitely on the table. (mar13)
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, folks!!

Hey-hey! It’s finally time to post up another PTB Power Rankings for the 2018 MLB Season. So, dust off those cleats, pull your bats out of storage, and find a glove that still fits because we are BACK and ready to, uh, well, rank 30 teams in opinionated order of performance.
Shit, well, it’s good to get back to it anyway.
Yes, Miggy, the first PTB MLB Power Rankings of the year are FINALLY out!
Editor’s note: Truly sorry about my lack of sports/baseball stuff, Nation. Grad school, unemployment, re-employment, and a lot of busy-ness at work have a way of sidetracking things. And once out of a habit, well, you know…
All records and stats are current as of Saturday, June 9, 2018.
1. New York Yankees (42-18) — The Bronx Bombers have won nine of their last 10, they’re playing .700 ball, and are the only team in MLB that has yet to lose 20 games. Ridiculous.
2. Boston Red Sox (44-21) — Personally, I find it quite boring when these two superpowers lead MLB. However, with the BoSox ripping up the league with 5.22 runs scored per game (second to the Yanks at 5.54), 600 team hits, 144 doubles, and 95 home runs, the offense is in *ahem* full swing. Solid support for Chris Sale (2.83 ERA), Rick Porcello (3.59), and David Price (4.00) and what has been a pretty good bullpen.
3. Houston Astros (41-25) — The defending champs are allowing the fewest runs in MLB (3.02 per game) while offensive core stalwarts Jose Altuve (142 OPS+), Carlos Correa (130 OPS+), Alex Bregman (136 OPS+), and George Springer 145 OPS+). Oh, and Justin Verlander (262 ERA+) and Gerrit Cole (176 OPS+) are posting best-ever seasons.
4. Seattle Mariners (40-24) — Listen, there are only four teams with 40+ wins to this point in the season (Milwaukee, see below, is at 39 as of this writing). The AL has all four them. The Mariners are probably the least likely to maintain, but, hey, those 40 are in the bank.
5. Milwaukee Brewers (39-25) — Raise your hand if you figured the Brewers posting the NL’s best record this far into the season. The offense has been alright (4.39 runs a game) as has the pitching overall (3.72 runs allowed), but that bullpen has been great (2.54 ERA). Josh Hader, in particular, is out-of-this-world. Getting ace Jimmy Nelson back soon could put the Brew Crew over the top.
6. Chicago Cubs (37-24) — Just half a game behind the Brewers, with six everyday batters posting OPS+ numbers over 100 (average). The bullpen features a whole bunch of sub-3 ERAs and Jon Lester (7-2, 2.22) has been great atop the rotation. While all those arms could regress, the solid showing at the plate from the Cubbies should keep them in the midst of October talk.
7. Washington Nationals (36-26) — The injuries have mounted for the Nats, but Max Scherzer has been healthy and continues his march towards Cooperstown. Teen phenom Juan Soto has been awesome in his 19-game introduction (.328/.435/.552) with a very promising 11-10 BB-to-K ratio.
8. Atlanta Braves (37-27) — The Bravos seem to have arrived a year ahead of schedule, but this team looks real good for a dynastic run, with Freddie Freeman (28), Ozzie Albies (21), Dansby Swanson (24), Ronald Acuna (20), and top hurlers Mike Foltynewicz (26) and Sean Newcomb (25) all well ahead of the curve.
9. Los Angeles Angels (37-28) — Mike Trout. We need to appreciate him more. Here’s his current line: .306/.439/.646, 1.085 OPS, 198 OPS+, 52 runs, 70 hits, 15 doubles, 19 homers, 13 steals (no caught stealings), 53-53 K-BB rate. And the dude is still only 26. Insane. Now, how the Halos hang around with Shohei Ohtani’s elbow woes remains in doubt, but the dominance of the Millville Meteor is of no question.
10. St. Louis Cardinals (35-27) — Only Jose Martinez (145 OPS+) and Tommy Pham (118) are really raking for the Redbirds, but strong starts from Miles Mikolas (2.27 ERA), Michael Wacha (2.47), and Carlos Martinez (1.83) are keeping the Cards alive in the Central and in the thick of things for a postseason spot.
This guy is really, really, really, amazingly good at baseball.
11. Philadelphia Phillies (32-30) — A week or so ago, these guys would rate much better, but the Phils have got 1-7 in June. The talent is there, but the next big test for rookie manager Gabe Kapler will be righting the ship.
12. Arizona Diamondbacks (34-29) — Remember back in April when Arizona was the toast of baseball with a 28-8 record? Yeah, well, going 14-21 since has certainly put that in the distant past. Of note, though, Paul Goldschmidt seems to waking up (13-for-20 with four homers over his last four games). It’s a thoroughly mediocre division to this point, so the winner of the NL West may well wind up being the team that takes best advantage of when its best players produce.
13. Cleveland Indians (33-29) — The lowest-rated division leaders here, the Tribe has played well at home (20-11) but been the pits away (13-18). While they’re still pretty odds-on to win the Central, that vaunted bullpen (worst in MLB with a 5.82 ERA) has a chance to torpedo anything beyond that. Of note, Cleveland could be the first team since 1920 to lead MLB in bullpen ERA one year (2.89 in 2017) and then finish dead-last the next.
14, 15, 16 (tie). Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants (32-32) — The Rockies’ regression was expected from last year, while the Dodgers have been hit by more injuries than a clown car at a demolition derby, and the Giants have managed to hang around via a great home record (19-11). With a little luck and health, any of these three could challenge for the division crown, or a wildcard berth.
17. Detroit Tigers (31-35) — They are not a good team, but also not as bad as once thought. While they should still look to trade guys like Shane Greene, Michael Fulmer, and a few others, this is a very fun team to watch when they are playing well. Ron Gardenhire deserves a lot of credit here. He won’t get many (any?) votes, but this is what a Manager of the Year looks like, folks.
18. Oakland Athletics (33-32) — Trevor Cahill. Blake Treinen. Matt Chapman. Matt Olson. Mark Canha. Raise your hand if you knew these were five members of the 2018 Oakland A’s and not the roster of some non-descript mid-90s boy band. Personally, I prefer Matty C. over Matt O. And that Trevor. He’s so good to his mother.
19. Minnesota Twins (27-34) — Injuries, starting with Ervin Santana in February, have not stopped dogging this team. It’d be a real shame if we don’t get to appreciate Byron Buxton fully because of his health. However, Eddie Rosario (.318/.355/.566) with 14 home runs has been a real breakout star for these erstwhile preseason darlings.
20. Pittsburgh Pirates (31-33) — The Pirates have a talent core of players. They have a gorgeous ballpark. They have a devoted fanbase. But they also have a shitty ownership group that refuses to give said fans what they want — a winner. The hard part should be developing your supporting cast, not paying for the top-tier talent.
21. Toronto Blue Jays (29-35) — Oh, well. That window sure closed in a hurry. A selloff could bring some much-needed youth ot the Jays, as well as adding intrigue to the wild-card races around the league.
22. San Diego Padres (30-36) — I can’t believe I’ve got them this high, either. Clearly, Eric Hosmer’s will-to-win-veteran-presence even affects mid-season rankings. In truth, the Friars have a great bullpen, which, if they wish to sell off, could bring in some depth to an already-well-liked farm system.
Hey Eddie! Yeah, you. Sorry about your team. But hey, great season so far, mate!
23. Tampa Bay Rays (29-34) — The “opener” trend seems like grasping at straws to be innovative, like Kevin Cash wants Michael Lewis to write a book about him or something. That said, despite a horrid start to the year, and a veritable Who’s That? roster, these guys are not all that bad. They are not good either. They are the bologna and cheese on white bread of the American League. Mustard optional.
24. New York Mets (27-34) — Well, they did the right thing by dumping C— Harvey, but this team is still just Mets-ing all over the place. Losers of eight straight, with whispers they might deal deGrom or Thor. I’m sure if those trades happen, this organization will find a way to Mets those up too.
25. Texas Rangers (27-40) — It’s nice to see National Treasure Bartolo Colon pitching well. He’s old and fat, so we should adore him. I guess. I’m actually a bit lost on his precise appeal.
26. Cincinnati Reds (22-43) — The mere fact that C— Harvey shares a team with Joey “The Last Angry Canadian” Votto, and Tucker “What A Great Last Name” Barnhart, boils my blood and causes me night sweats. Also, the pitching stinks.
27. Chicago White Sox (21-41) — Lucas Giolito lead the Pale Hose with four wins, but has a 7.08 ERA. Meanwhile, Jose Abreu (139 OPS+, team-high 24 doubles) is an island unto himself.
28. Kansas City Royals (22-43) — The Royals are giving up 5.52 runs per game. The Yankees have scored 5.54 runs per game. That’s right, folks! When the Royals are in town, it’s just like watching the Yankees!
29. Baltimore Orioles (19-44) — It’s pretty clear Buck Showalter doesn’t care anymore, does it? While we all know Manny Machado is great at baseball (166 OPS+) and will be traded, just gander at the awfulness of Chris Davis’s season (.152/.232/.232, four home runs, a 30 OPS+). It’s soooooooo gross!
30. Miami Marlins (23-41)  — No, the Marlins are not last because of my spite over how they have been a joke forever, constantly screw over fans, and make a mockery of competition. No, it’s not because their current and former owners are emblematic of the excessive awfulness of capitalism . No, it’s not because they plead “process” over “results” whenever someone rightly gives them a second look. It’s because they suck. Last in runs scored per game (3.48) and tied for fifth-worst in runs allowed (5.14) should do.
And with that, we are back in the pink with our Power Rankings. I hope to bring you guys more MLB goodness throughout the rest of the year when time allows. Until then, it’s batter up and play ball!

New Ideas - Lead To New Facts - Lead to New Actions
The Essential Items For Your Podcast Website
Let me state, that this has nothing to do with Wordpress vs Wix vs Squarespace. These are the items that I feel should be on your website (and why)
A Play Button
Think of this as a free sample. If someone is going to subscribe to your show, they need to hear it first. This is why there is a guy with the chicken on a toothpick at the mall. It is the teaser, the free sample of your podcast with no commitment to buy.
A Contact Button/Page
I'm not making this up. I just read an article in Pod to Pod, and I read a story about a podcaster that might have a good "Because of My Podcast" story. There wasn't any contact button at the top, bottom, left, or right side of the screen. It wasn't on the about page, it wasn't there. The only way to contact the person was via twitter. Being somewhat of a geek, I pulled up his RSS feed and dug through the code to find it. Realize, nobody is going to dig through your RSS feed to get your email address. Make your contact button easy to find, and don't get cute and name it something like "Let's get coffee." Be sure to test your button/page to make sure you get the messages from your website.
Your About Page
There are two answers here. If your website is primarily the home of your podcast then the first paragraph should be about the show. If your website is the home of your brand (products, press, etc) then the first paragraph should be about the host. Then a second paragraph about the show. In my travels, the about page is one of the pages that receive the most traffic. If you've been podcasting for a bit and have some reviews, take some of the phrases used by your audience and use it in your about page (use the native tongue of your audience).
Subscribe Buttons
We all love to talk about iTunes/Apple Podcasts, as we should. They have a huge amount of the market. There are android phones as well and it's a bit of a chicken or the egg. More podcasts are consumed on Apple products than Android. Well, most podcasters talk about subscribing on Apple products (and leave the android people out to dry). If Google would get off their butt and make a native app for podcast listeners that would be great (they did just purchase the 60 db app). So make sure people can subscribe to your show. You REALLY want to avoid telling people to "Find me in iTunes."
Extra Credit
Don't just make a subscribe page, but add directions with screenshots. You could even do a quick presentation on YouTube Live on how to subscribe to your show, and then send people to the video on YouTube.
There is more power in subscriptions than reviews.

Always Be Open For New Input
I've heard reports from one person or another. Anything on the internet that is repeated enough becomes an undeniable fact. With this in mind, I always stay open to new feedback. I always consider the source and always allow new ideas to challenge my beliefs. If I'm going to believe something, it is typically based on things I believe to be facts. Beliefs are based on input and your ideas and feelings (your feelings can skew the input).
Actions are based on beliefs. Beliefs are based on perceived facts. Facts are based on input into your brain. For example, I don't like coconut. Any candy bar with coconut, I'm not a fan. The one day someone handed me a drink. I wasn't sure what it was, it was supposed to some drink better than soda. It was white. It turned out it was some sort of vanilla coconut mix. I have input. I now can say, I don't like something that is predominantly coconut, but I don't mind it mixed with vanilla. You have to be open to someone challenging a belief (I don't like coconut) and taking a look at the other side of the story (having a sip). Then allowing that information to influence your beliefs, which then influence your actions.
New and Noteworthy Insights
I've been begging people to share their before and after numbers if they got into New and Noteworthy and that is just what Matthew McClain did on this post about downloads from Apple
He states before being on the Front Page of New and Noteworthy, "In this period we had an average of 71 downloads per day." This is with two episodes (36 downloads per episode - DPE)
On their first day, the traffic went, "from 26 total downloads the day before (our lowest day ever) to 241." (122 DPE)
He does say, "We released episode two on the 8th which pretty much doubled the recent total downloads to 1,447" (so he now had three episodes counting his trailer) (482DPE)
One day they reached 1,928 downloads for the day (1928/3 = 642 DPE)
He states, " At the time of writing, episode one has 6,978 downloads, episode two 6,161, and episode three 2,295. So 37% of listeners followed the podcast from episode two to episode three.
According to VP of Podcast Relations Rob Walch when it comes to iTunes/Apple Podcasts rankings, "“100% about the total number of new subscribers in the past 7 days, with a weighted average for the last 24, 48, and 72 hours”
Things to Consider
This was on the FRONT PAGE of iTunes/Apple Podcasts  New and Noteworthy (not a category)
Their genre may fit a wider audience than yours.
If you don't make New and Noteworthy, your life is not over. iTunes/Apple Podcasts is a directory, a phone book if you will. It is a central location where people can put in the full name of your show and do a search.
Plays From Your Website Add Up
Ravi Jayagopal (the man behind Digital Access Pass, and the Cool Cast Player along with being the host of the Subscribe Me show sent a link to a post. Last week I mentioned how there are a ton of players out there, but the majority of downloads come via mobile devices. In his post, he pointed out that:
A player on a website is more suitable for "introducing" someone to your podcast - not necessarily for long-term consumption. Introduce on your site, lead them to subscribe on a mobile app on your actual show. Promote your website to cold and luke-warm traffic, like ad traffic and social-spraying content marketing, so you can cookie/pixel them for later retargeting, promote your brand, show them your face, maybe connect with them with a personable video, offer them your lead-magnet and get them to maybe give your their email id, etc etc. But once they're on your list, promote Apple Podcast and Stitcher and Google Play links to those already on your "list", because they don't need to be "convinced" or "converted" anymore about the value that you provide.
Here is a link to the Facebook Post.
He shows how he is getting thousands of new plays on different websites.
Launching Your Podcast With a Massive Amounts of Downloads
Most good ideas are not a single thought. A single idea comes up, and someone says, "You know what else, you might try this..." I always want people to know that:
When you launch with more than one episode, the additional episodes do not download automatically.
New and Noteworthy will not deliver you 10,0000 downloads per episode (if that is the goal)
While you should focus on generating buzz when you launch, a podcast is a marathon and not a sprint.
Some Reasons Why You Might Not Want to Launch with a Ton (25) New Episodes
If you record 25 episodes and find out at episode two that people hate your super jumbo deluxe lightning round, they have to sit through 23 episodes (unless you go back and edit them) until you put out a "new" episode with the changes.
You might pre-fade. What I mean by this is you never make it to episode 25 because you aren't seeing the downloads, getting any feedback, and so you quit before you ever launch.
People will need to go and download your earlier episodes. By default, they will download your latest episode, and then manually download 1-24.
Some Reasons Why Might Want to Launch with 25
You maybe have found your voice by episode 25, and with episode 26 you sound more confident, organized and professional. Maybe it's not such a bad idea.
If you can't come up with 25 episodes, maybe you shouldn't be podcasting?
A Compromise on Launching Your Podcast with 25 Episodes
Instead of putting all your 25 episodes out at the same time, release your episodes (one at a time) to your website, and to your feed. However, don't submit your show to any directories like iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, Google Play music just yet. You can tell your friends if you want, but any traffic will come from people searching for your content via search engines. You might also use Facebook to assemble a "Focus Group" and ask people for feed.
This way you can get feedback as you are creating it. When you get to a certain number where you feel confident your show will have a positive impact on your target audience, submit it to the directories, sound out an email blast, tell your friends, family, and neighbors, and do your "launch."

Ramblings: Cogliano/Shore Traded; Chabot Update; Dive on Will Butcher – January 15
The 2018-19 Dobber Midseason Fantasy Hockey Guide is available right now in the Dobber Shop! Get the edge you need to make a run for your league title. For those out of the running, there is loads of information on call-ups, rookies, prospects from across the world, and a whole lot more. There is something for everyone so be sure to grab your copy now!
*
Defenceman Josh Gorges has retired from professional hockey. He was often a healthy scratch in 2017-18 and couldn’t get an NHL deal this season. He finishes his career with 124 points in 783 games. All the best to Josh and his family on their next step.
*
I’m only going to touch briefly on the Andrew Cogliano/Devin Shore trade. There is not much fantasy relevance here but that will depend on lineup configuration. Cogliano could fit with, say, Jason Spezza and Alex Radulov on the second line, in which case he’ll have some value. I imagine Shore will bounce all over the lineup for the Ducks, as most wingers have.
The crux of the trade is this: Cogliano is responsible defensively and has some offensive upside. I’m not sure Shore can boast either of those things. Dallas gets older but this feels to me as trying to recoup something for an asset they don’t think has a future with the team, and Cogliano is an established middle-six two-way winger. That’s valuable, even at his age.
*
The New Jersey Devils provided an update on Taylor Hall in that there is no update on Taylor Hall. They won’t say what’s wrong but he hasn’t started skating.
*
Thomas Chabot was skating for Ottawa in practice on Monday and it looks like he’ll be ready to go soon, possibly for their game on Wednesday. There was an update on Colin White saying he won’t return before the All-Star break, which starts next weekend.
*
Hey everyone, Nick Schmaltz is really, really good:
Matt Barzal continues to be an absolute monster entering the offensive zone. Leads the league in controlled entries per 60. This is the rest of the top 10 (100+ 5v5 minutes tracked) pic.twitter.com/YBuB7Sl2dz

*
We had a good ol’ fashioned shootout in New Jersey as the Devils and Blackhawks combined for 13 goals in the Devils’ 8-5 win. The scoring was really spread out among New Jersey’s players, with Kyle Palmieri being the most relevant with a pair of tallies. Going back to the All-Star break last year, Palmieri has 37 goals in 78 games. It’s not a huge shooting percentage binge, either, though it is a stout 14.9 percent in that span.
Sami Vatanen had a goal and two assists and is now up to 18 points in 42 games. His plus/minus is still atrocious, though if Mac Blackwood can stabilize things in net, that could turn itself around and make him much more valuable in multi-cat leagues.
*
Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist in St. Louis’s 4-1 win in Washington. That gives Tarasenko four goals and seven points in six games this month. He’s starting to heat up, and playing with Jaden Schwartz and Brayden Schenn is only going to help. Don’t be surprised if they all start heating up, as long as they keep skating together.
*
Carl Soderberg tallied a hat trick in Toronto, leading Colorado to a 6-3 win. Soderberg now has 15 goals on the season and is one away from tying a career high. He’s also over two shots on goal per game for the first time in his career, and the additional shots are leading to goals. Who knew.
*
James van Riemsdyk, on the top line and top power play unit as the Flyers went with five forwards on their top PP quintet, managed a hat trick of his own in Philadelphia’ 7-4 win over Chicago. Give JvR five goals and seven points in three games. He’s looking like the player the Flyers paid for.
Devan Dubnyk was pulled after the second period.
Nolan Patrick had two goals and an assist in the win. It was his first point(s) of any kind in nine games, his first multi-goal game of the year, and his first multi-point game since November 1st. I will say, he has looked better than his points give him credit for. He just needs more time.
*
Back in the middle of November, I wrote part of a Ramblings on three young defencemen with standout starts to the 2018-19 season: Thomas Chabot, Miro Heiskanen, and Henri Jokiharju. Since then, none have proven themselves anything other than standouts. Though Chabot is injured, Heiskanen is playing for a boring team, and Jokiharju’s ice time is declining, the results have still been very good for all three since the time of writing. It’s truly a triumvirate of talented defencemen, all of whom could be in the upper-tier of blue liners in a few years’ time (Chabot may already be there).
I bring up that old Ramblings because I was doing some stats perusing on Sunday afternoon. This is the list of the top-15 defencemen this season in shot driving percentage relative to their team at five on five. It helps to identify good defencemen playing on bad teams, elite defencemen on good teams, and those just along for the ride, being a partner to either of the previous two type of d-men in this list (from Natural Stat Trick):
Let’s break down the 15 players into groups.
Elite – Kris Letang, Thomas Chabot (yes, I’m ready to say that), Erik Karlsson, Dougie Hamilton, Mark Giordano, John Carlson, Seth Jones
Along for the Ride – Brian Dumoulin, Brenden Dillon, Dylan DeMelo
Everyone Else – Radko Gudas, Henri Jokiharju, Will Butcher, Travis Dermott, Troy Stecher
Let’s go over the Everyone Else section for a minute.
Radko Gudas is likely one of the more under-appreciated defencemen in the NHL. He has put up very strong relative shot-driving numbers each of his four seasons with the Flyers, this year being the best of them.
Henri Jokiharju has already been discussed at length.
Travis Dermott has always put up strong results in a minimal role for the Leafs. He looks to be the heir apparent to Jake Gardiner, working under the assumption that Gardiner doesn’t re-sign with Toronto.
Troy Stecher… I’m not quite sure what’s going on here. He hasn’t put up anything close to these types of numbers in his previous two seasons. He and Derrick Pouliot have been an excellent defence pair for the Canucks, driving the play at nearly a 53-percent clip on a team that is much, much worse than that. He’s a guy to dig into at a later date.
Will Butcher is a very interesting name on this list and he’s the guy I want to explore today.
As we sit on Monday evening before the games start, Butcher has just 14 points in 43 games on the year. This follows a rookie campaign where he had 44 points in 81 games. It also follows a rookie season where he was playing just over 16 minutes a night compared to just over 19 minutes now. In other words, it’s been a disappointing follow-up to an excellent rookie fantasy campaign.
So what’s going on?
First thing is first: he’s driving the play. He’s the only New Jersey defenceman over a 50 percent adjusted shot share at five-on-five, sitting at 52.5 percent. No one on that blue line with 500 minutes is at 48.5 percent or better. Not only has he been good at driving the play, he’s been great relative to his team, resulting in him being in the top-10 league-wide in relative shot share, ranking just behind Erik Karlsson. The picture above shows the other elite defencemen in the top-15. It’s good company for Butcher.
The team isn’t getting unlucky with him on the ice, either. He’s tied for 20th in PDO among all defencemen with 500 minutes, and the team is shooting 9.97 percent with him on the ice, 23rd in the league. He’s been on the ice for 3.31 goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five and yet he’s last among the team’s d-men in points/60. The natural conclusion is that his individual points percentage (IPP, or the rate at which he garners a point when he’s on the ice) has cratered, and it has: among 149 defencemen in the league with 500 minutes, he’s 144th in IPP, managing a point on roughly 11 percent of the five-on-five goals scored with him on the ice. That, of course, is hilariously low and will not sustain itself this season, or in any other.
Of course, just saying he’s been driving the play in a half-season sample and that he’s been unlucky doesn’t really paint a complete picture of what Butcher does.
There is a visual tool from CJ Turtoro that helps compare defencemen among several categories, not the least of which are shots/60 minutes, possession entries and exits/60 minutes, entry break-ups, and more. This is based off the game-tracking work of Corey Sznajder. Now, the tracking isn’t complete. Games are missing, so some players have a couple hundred minutes tracked, some have several hundred, some have over one thousand. But it does give us an idea (however incomplete) of what a player has done. We know that entries and exits with possession create much more shots than dump-ins and dump-outs, so defencemen ranking high in one (or both) of these categories is what we’re looking for.
Let’s take a step back to give some context. Butcher just turned 24 years old earlier this month. Our Dobber Tools have him listed at 5’10”, 190 lbs. For extended periods of his career to this date, he’s been used in a minimal role as a power-play specialist. So, we have an undersized defenceman seen as having very good offensive tools in his mid-20s but is still needing to learn how to play against bigger competition before earning more minutes. Remind you of anyone else? Hmmm:
Now, Ellis is 28 this season but the years covered in that viz are age-26, age-27, and this year. Next season is Butcher’s age-25 season. But they’re both undersized defencemen whose first full season didn’t come until 23 years old, neither has been a shot-volume guy (save for that one half-season from Ellis), neither was (has been) given big minutes early in their career, but both seem to be very good puck-movers. The difference between the two is that Ellis is in an environment with several excellent defencemen, and Butcher is not.
The whole point of this was to try to point out a player who has been excellent this year but hasn’t had the breaks go their way. Butcher’s IPP has cratered but it won’t stay there all year and will most certainly be much improved for 2019-20. Whereas Ellis is one good defenceman among many, Butcher is one good defenceman among few (if any). For those in dynasty leagues, the time to buy him is now. Barring a catastrophic injury, his value won’t get any lower over the next few years than it is at the moment. He’s only going to keep improving which will only lead to more minutes. The compounding of more minutes next year (including top PP time) with a rebound in IPP feels like a sneaky big season in the making. He’s not a multi-cat stud so beware in leagues that count hits and shots, but in points-only leagues, he should be on deep keeper/dynasty shopping lists right now.
