Do you think that Lucienne was so insistent Dream take a raven with him in 1x02 not just so she can stay informed but because she can no longer go herself but wishes that she could? Lucienne used to be a raven but now she's not, and Jessamy is gone, everyone else in the Dreaming is gone. It's just Dream and a librarian without a library, a librarian who used to be a raven but isn't anymore, unable to fulfill both the new role and the old.

I’m having Matthew thoughts (cause when am I not?) and I thought I’d share.

In the comics, Matthew doesn’t show up until Doll’s House so presumably Dream created him sometime after 24/7. I think the decision to bring Matthew in earlier was brilliant (obviously, if my 9 Matthew fics are any indication).

But it does raise the question of how Netflix!Matthew got created. It’s apparent in the show that Dream did not create Matthew, at least consciously (more on that distinction in a moment). While we know that Lucienne was the one who gave Matthew his first directions, there’s no indication that Lucienne has the power to create new dreams, so it is extremely unlikely that she made him.

I think the most straightforward explanation is that the Dreaming kind of spontaneously created a new raven. Dream had returned, the realm was healing, and part of that was filling the raven-shaped void with a guy who just died. But the Dreaming is Dream. Ultimately the Dreaming could not produce a raven if on some level Dream did not want a raven.

BUT the more fan fiction-friendly explanation is that Death made Matthew.

Hear me out.

Death knows that Dream is free and is searching for his tools. She also knows that he absolutely will not ask her for help. And she is worried about him.

But then she goes to take this guy named Matthew and she knows. Just like she knew that Hob was perfect for her little brother, she knows that Matthew is exactly who Dream needs. Death can see that Matthew will stand up to Dream, that he’s brave enough to handle what Dream will be going through to get his tools back, that he’ll say what he thinks, but ultimately he has a good heart, even if he sometimes doubts it himself.

And Death makes a split second decision. Instead of passing Matthew into whatever afterlife is waiting for him, she takes him to the Dreaming while Dream is going to find Constantine. Once there, she channels all her Endlessness, all the parts of her that are most related to Dream, and she speaks to the Dreaming. She says, “Raven.”

Lucienne hears and she thanks her lucky stars that Lady Death thinks the same way that she does and she hurries to give this brand new raven a slapdash orientation and instructions. But before she does, Lucienne and Death exchange a nod and a smile. They’ll never speak of it again.

i like having a lot of different ideas about lucienne and dream's relationship in my head at the same time, and one situation i've been pondering lately is: they both recognise they have romantic feelings for each other, but they decide it's better if they don't act on them.

lucienne is a core facet of the dreaming. and exactly none of dream's romantic relationships have ended well. if they were to get together, and eventually break up, it wouldn't just cause a fissure in their vital working relationship; there would be massive fallout in the dreaming as a whole. as mervyn brings up in the show, lucienne has a pretty strong claim on the loyalties of many of the residents. can you imagine the consequences of turning eleven thousand dreams and nightmares and various other entities into children of divorce??

to be frank, i think lucienne is way too smart to date dream. she's seen the way dream has wreaked havoc on the dreaming after every romantic mishap--he completely razed the dreaming after nada, who he spent one (1) night with. how bad would it be if he was anguishing over breaking up with someone who has been at his side for thousands of years?

i think both of them love the dreaming too much to ever risk causing it that much damage; i imagine even dream would be able to stop thinking with his dick for once for the sake of their kingdom.

idk i just think it would be very juicy and angsty. lots of self-flagellation. lots of "country before self" type shit. mwah. delicious.

It's the Dream/Lucienne/Calliope fic I promised! This is definitely a one-shot for now, but these three are still very snuggled together in my head. There may be more little glimpses here and there!

Also Matthew mention yay! I think he'd make a very good page if Lucienne trained him properly. Calliope, unfortunately, would not; she loves reading too much. Lucienne would give her a stack of things to shelf and find her twelve hours later half-way through her second book and shelving as she finished them.

Lucienne Librarian of the Dreaming, DO NOT FUCK WITH HER BOOKS!!!!

Ok hear me out!

Lucienne was firstly Dreams Raven right? Which means she wasn’t created by Morpheus but because one of his citizens by choice.

And she was given another choice to become the Librarian! From what I understood Lucienne was the first Raven.

So I imagine she has some power by right or age alone not even talking about the fact that she’s the Librarian!!!

Which lead me to this:

The scream came out of nowhere and was loud enough that Hob startled so badly his book when flying and he jumped a good to few feed in the air.

Dream caught the book in a cloud of sand and set it down next to Hob. Aside from that he didn’t react at all.

“Lucienne!” The voices sounded very sorry and very panicked. “LUCIENNE! PLEASE I AM SOOO SOO SO SORRY I DIDNT MEAN IT!!” It was also rising in pitch with every word.

Hob wasn’t sure what was happening. He got that Lucienne was scary. She had learned from the best after all and Hob, who had been the father of the printing business once, knew that Librarians in general were scary. This still seemed a bit excessive.

He turned to look at his boyfriend, when someone zoomed past them. Hob was pretty sure it was a dream…

“They are getting faster.” Dreams voice startled Hob again, but not enough to throw something out of reflex. “Usually Lucienne already has them in her claws by now.”

Hob just stared, sure Lucienne could be as bad as the Germans when it came to paper work, but claws was a bit…

That was when Hob registered the clicking of claws. It sounded like Matthew when he walked on stone ground, only larger and more menacing. It also got louder.

“Dream…” Hob asked a bit helpless and unsure if asking about it was a good idea. “Dream are the books shaking?!”

“Yes.”

“WHY?!”

“You have met Crowley and his plants right?”

“Are you implying they are scared of Luci…”

Hob stopped cold, a long sharp claws wrapped around one of the bookshelf, that walled of their little reading nook. It looked like animated Obsidian. Then the person the claws belonged to poked her head around the bookshelf.

“Hello Lucienne” Dream greeted her with a soft half smile while Hob just gaped. It was in fact Lucienne, only she was much taller. Close to 8 feet if he had to guess and there were words writing themself all over her skin. Most were snow white, but deep red ink as well as bright blue also appeared.

“My Lord!” She still sounded much like Hob was used aside from the echo in her voice. Which made it sound as if two or three more Lucienne were talking with her.

Lucienne took another stepp around the bookshelf and by now Hob was sure Dream would need to reattach his jaw.

Lucienne had wings. A huge pair of them the colour of old paper…no scratch that they where made of paper! Every single feather a perfectly folded piece. Looking very much like touching them or worse getting hit by them would cut a person in half. There were also words running and shifting over them. Rather tame at the top but the longer Hob followed the feathers down, the more words were there. Until the wings were the colour of India ink. Literally spilling over with the amount of colour they were holding and dripping it down to the floor.

“Where are they?” She asked slowly and Hob felt every single hair on his body rise.

“That way.” Dream said and pointed in the direction the dream had zoomed past, just a minute ago. “What did they do?”

“Ripped a page out of a book.” She was already turning leaving ink puddles in her wake. Claws clicked again and Hob realised that Lucienne was walking on birds legs. Ravens if he had to guess. Her coat had elongated until it looked like a birds tail.

“Oh and Lucienne?” Dream asked and she halted. “Do not reduce them to dream matter please.” The only answer he got was a low angry rumble. Then she was gone.

“What the actual FUCK?!” Hob breathed and Dream shot him an amused look.

“Lucienne once was my raven, before she became my librarian.”

“THAT DOESNT EXPLAIN ANYTHING!!” Hob hollered, but Dream just looked at him.

“She was my first raven and I overestimated the amount of power I would need to turn her into a person again. As a result she retained parts of her Raven form as well as the ability to shift them at will.”

“She is scary as hell!”

“Oh no Luzifer too doesn’t invokes her anger. Not unless they want to punish one of their demons”

“DREAM?!”
