Lady Danbury ⇨ Lady Danbury is made of PURE awesome!! The reason I'm putting her in Ben's wanteds, is that they seem to get along fairly well, and have an almost, playful dynamic! Casually chatting at social events, dancing together at these events (which is one of my most favourite background scenes with these two), and even her setting him up to critique an artist's work when he's standing right there! hahah! I also loved a little scene in the book where he was chasing after Sophie and Lady Danbury blocked the way! -- intentionally or not! Anyway! I just think these two would be rather fun to plot/thread with! Danbury is a QUEEN -- even if she's not the actual queen, so it would be fantastic to have her on the board and Ben would love some threads with her!!

Genevieve Delacroix ⇨ Benedict's 'friend' though clearly, they have a whole . . . 'friends with benefits' thing going on or maybe something more?! Either way, I think its such an interesting relationship to delve deeper into! Benedict doesn't look down on her or think her any different just because of the status difference, and where they are in the same social circles, I think it could create a lot of fun scenarios for them! There are lots of points throughout the show that we could explore in threads, OR we can go down that AU path of what if scenarios between the two of them! Would be SO excited if someone took her on because I really do love the two of them together!

Lucy Granville ⇨ So Benedict and Lucy's dynamic is an . . . interesting one!! hahah! I think it would be super fun to have a Lucy on the site! From threesomes, to Ben realizing who she is, to casual conversations and everything before and after! Lots of canon potential with the two of them and of course, any AU scenarios that I'm also happy to delve into! They seem to get along well, as we've seen some glimpses of them chatting at social events and . . . well, considering the night they first met haha! But yes! Would love for anyone to take her so we can delve into this dynamic! Ben is totally up for all the plotting and threads!

003 fox monroe sterling harper àtom

1. Harper 

I love my underrated queen. Chelsea fucking nailed her character, her relationship with Monty was cute even if a bit rushed but their chemistry was good and I think she deserved more screentime. No real complaints with her other than that she got no screentime!!! and a writer’s problem I had more with Monty’s love life anyways!!! She was incredible though and i would have loved more of a glimpse of her life with Spacekru. 

2. Sterling 

So,,, I don’t know why Sterling just clicked with me but he just.. did? I don’t know. A lot of the delinquents were borderline extras (see: Murphy!!!) who I would have loved to know more about but Sterling really caught me??? I don’t know, maybe it’s because I never quite moved on from my Nate Archibald phase and I had a Literal Moment where I thought he was Chace Crawford in his first scene in Unity Day and then I just thought he was cute and digged his character whether it be the soft spoken, kinda shy boy he was with Clarke during their Unity Day drinking game or the cutely coward boy he was when Bellamy was trying to save Finn or the brave boy determined to save Mel, I loved him. I think he was cool and I have tons of really cool headcanons about him (please inquire in a different ask don’t wanna clog this one) 

I’m just really mad at his death scene??? What was the point of having him fall off the cliff?? Was it to give them motivation to save Mel, who ended up being a nothing character anyways? Why over the cliff? Why did nobody stop him? Why did nobody do anything? Why did nobody notice the cable was shittily tied? Why did it feel like nothing mattered in his death scene? 

Also Keenan Tracey is beautiful. 

3. Monroe 

I LOVE MONROE! 

I think Monroe could’ve been fascinating and that she deserved a bit more screentime. I think she was cool as hell and her loyalty made me so happy. My favourite dynamics for her were with Sterling (I think she saw him as a little brother), Harper (could have been badass girlfriends), Murphy (their interactions made me happy) and Bellamy, I think she was something of an important soldier but also important person to Bellamy and her death scene...really made me sad. 

(I also hc her as a lesbian and you can pry it from my cold dead hands) 

4. Fox 

I put Fox here because in her time on the show, I really didn’t get a good read on her but I did like her dynamic with Bellamy in canon. She felt like a healthier younger sister for him. In @fleimkepakosskairipa‘s fanon, however, I really like her and Murphy together. Her death scene upset me a bit but I kinda... forgot after awhile. 

I love Genevieve a lot though and I was fascinated to find how long her and Richard have been friends. They seem to have a good friendship. 

5. Atom 

I don’t hate Atom. Not by a long shot. I actually quite liked Atom and watching him die slowly like that made me squirm and tear up a lot but I guess he just??? stuck with me the least. still no shade, he was incredible, I babyshipped him with Octavia and I think the Murphy/Atom/Bellamy dynamic was cool and should have been explored further.

I would have liked him to not be forgotten about so quickly but whatever, his screentime was shortlived and he was kind of made to be like that.

Because you Love to Hate me- Book review

Warning: May contain spoilers!

Because you Love to Hate me was a book I had been dying to get a hold of ever since a few of my favourite Booktubers mentioned this collaboration. 

The book contains 13 short stories of villains, each author paired with a Booktuber to give them a prompt for said short story. I have to admit, some stories I absolutely loved... others I either had a neutral or slightly negative opinion of. Let’s go through them:

The Blood of Imuriv by Renee Ahdieh, prompt by Christine Riccio:

This short story prompt was “The Grandson of an Evil, Matriarchal Dictator who tried to rule over the universe wants to follow in her footsteps and accidentally loses his temper, killing his sibling in a game of chess”. Wow, Christine. That’s a prompt and a half. 

The thing about this story was that although it was very good, there was too much content for the reader to fully grasp the storyline itself. This would make for a good book, but the shortened version left my head thinking the story lacked, simply from the amount of information that had to be thrown at the reader for the story to make sense. Christine- although I love her- could have maybe made the prompt a little easier for Renee to write something readers would appreciate more. That said, if this short was made into a novel, I can guarantee I would enjoy it more.

Jack by Ameriie, prompt by Tina Burke:

The prompt given for this story was “Jack and the Beanstalk meets Phalaris of Agrigento”. One of the more well thought out ideas for a prompt, I’ll give you that, Tina.

However this was one of the stories I didn’t enjoy as much. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good “take a childhood classic and remake it”... but this just didn’t grab me. I rarely find a book I struggle to read through, but this was one. The character to me didn’t feel villain-y, and I also struggled to connect with her. 

The friendship between man and giant didn’t really feel like that, which is probably why the ending didn’t shock me as much as I think Ameriie was intending. 

It shocked me, but only in the way that there was no build up. Had I been given hints to this happening it may have affected me, but I personally felt it was a bit hit-and-miss.

2/5 stars.

Gwen and Art and Lance by Soman Chainani, prompt by Samantha Lane:

The prompt for this story was “A modern-day mash-up of the King Arthur Legend and Persephone-Hades Myth”. As someone who avidly loves all things myth and legend, I had high hopes for this one, Samantha.

However, this didn’t feel evil. I loved the context and the layout of text-style storytelling, I thought this was pretty creative actually. But this didn’t fit with the book for me. I was expecting one of the boys to act more like Hades and be cunning in his pursuit of Gwen, or for Gwen herself to feel a bit more villain-y. But I just got that High School not even the meanest of mean girl vibe.

2/5 stars.

Shirley and Jim by Susan Dennard, prompt by Sasha Alsberg:

“A young Moriarty”. Many things to be done with that prompt. I maybe would have expected the story to just be about Moriarty and his psychopathic ways coming to the surface, like a true origin story. But I got a gender-bent Sherlock and John. As teenage girls swooning over teenage-hottie-new-guy Jim Moriarty. 

Okay... I was actually surprised at how much I ended up liking this one. Sherlock is one of my favourite shows, and yes I am one of those people who ship Johnlock and/or Jimlock. So for Moriarty and Shirley to be a kind-of couple warmed my little shipper heart. 

But the end. It was so well done. The twists and the explanations just... Ah! 

4/5 stars.

The Blessing of Little Wants by Sarah Enni, prompt by Sophia Lee:

The author’s prompt for this story was “ A Dark Sorcerer’s motives for seeking immortality or Omnipotence”. First thing you think is, “Voldemort!” right? (If you haven’t figured already I skipped to the prompt before reading the story itself). But alas, no Tom Riddle for us.

I got serious Magneto vibes instead, and I’m not complaining. I was confused to the extreme; WAS HE REAL?! I thought he was part of her imagination but then her reaction confused me even further. Definitely well written on Sarah’s part. This seriously needs to be a book just so I can find out answers.

The Sea Witch by Marissa Meyer, prompt by Zoe Herdt:

Zoe’s prompt was “What if the Sea Witch had previously been in the Little Mermaid’s shoes but decided to kill the love interest and turn back into a mermaid instead?”. Let me just start by saying that “what if...” is my favourite prompt for any book. Every scenario in my head is a what if of book characters. 

This story was one of my favourites in this book, simply because it was this kind of origin story I had been expecting and waiting for. The plot of an outcast mermaid who has a serious fangirl crush (let’s be real- who doesn’t have an unhealthy crush on someone famous?), gets rejected in the most awful way, gets bullied by him and his slimy girlfriend, tries to kill herself, falls in love again with a human, becomes human for him, only to get betrayed by him, then (my favourite part) lets him enjoy his wedding day until she slits his throat. Good on you girl. Promptly returning to the sea, she becomes the sea witch we all know and love to hate.

5/5 stars.

Beautiful Venom by Cindy Pon, prompt by Benjamin Alderson:

Warning: mentions of rape.

When I read the prompt “Medusa, Go!” I was not expecting to read such an amazing story. Medusa was one of my all-time favourite legends from history when I was younger, so when I say I had high expectations, I mean really high.

And I was not let down. This story features easily the most evil villain in this book, and I don’t mean Mei Du/ Jia Mei Feng. This Medusa tale has an Asian twist to it, placing the well known Greek Mythology Gods into this culture instead. Jia Mei Feng is one of the lucky girls to be chosen to be the Emperor’s new wife, but the at-first dashing Hai Xin unexpectedly comes into her life and will not leave her alone. Her path twists violently into a dark path when Hai Xin kidnaps Mei, and rapes her when she says No.

I cried so much at this story, as it truly represents victim blaming as well as the rape culture, and the Goddess of Purity (Goddess of Bitchiness as far as I’m concerned) blames Mei, asking “did you say no?” and “Did you refuse him during his first visit?”. The Goddess curses Mei to look as ugly as a serpent, becoming Medusa, for something that was not her fault.

The power this story holds is incredible, showing that we must not ignore these issues and unite against victim blaming and rape culture. It is not ok.

Death Knell by Victoria Schwab, prompt by Jesse George:

The prompt for this story was “Hades waked up after being unconscious at the bottom of a well in Ireland”. The lyrical, beautiful writing from Victoria in this story was extraordinary and had me hooked from the start.

The relationship that blossoms between Death and Grace is short and quick, which is normally something I don’t particularly like, but I found myself enjoying the rapid romance between the living girl and the boy tasked with transporting her to death. 

Although this story was very predictable- you knew as soon as she avoided him the first time that she was going to escape death at any cost. And you knew as soon as they were near the well that she wasn’t going in. Yet I wasn’t disappointed.

Marigold by Samantha Shannon, prompt by Regan Perusse:

I have to admit, I had to re-read this one when writing my notes because I had completely forgotten about it. an “Era-Queen retelling in Nineteenth-Century London” was a very good prompt, and I’m a sucker for historical retellings. 

Yet I couldn’t remember it. And then when I read it I understood why. Nothing about this story grabbed me. Which surprises me given my previous statement about how much I love historical retellings. It wasn’t that I thought it was particularly bad, it was actually very well written, but it just didn’t grab me.

You, You, It’s all about You by Adam Silvera, prompt by Catriona Feeney:

This story’s prompt by Catriona was “A female teen crime lord concealed by a mask”.

The immediate aspect that spiked my interest was the second person point of view. Second person is always guaranteed to interest me as the character is you, which brings you even deeper into the story. The main character herself was definitely one of the most twisted villains in this book; wearing a mask made of the flesh of her abusive father. That was very disturbingly creative on Adam’s part. The storyline of the drugs being made by this crime lord was incredibly creative, not just using illegal drugs we already know about, but using the drugs to make the character even more disturbing.

Julian breaks every rule by Andrew Smith, prompt by Raeleen Lemay: 

The prompt “A psychopath in a futuristic setting” really excited me, as I have a worrying love of psychopaths. 

Andrew did not disappoint, making me laugh out loud earning strange looks from people near me, and just overall writing a very good story. 

I do want to know what Andrew has planned for Julian though, as that cliffhanger left me aching for more.

Indigo and Shade by April Genevieve Tucholke, prompt by Whitney Atkinson:

“Beauty and the Beast: Suitor’s revenge” does actually sound like the dark sequel to the classic tale, but this story strayed from the darkness it could have been. 

To be honest, I find the Beauty and the Beast story to be overused right now, as the Cinderella one was for a time. This story I’m afraid to say does slot into the overused category. The story was good, don’t get me wrong, but it was the bad side of predictable.

Sera by Nicola Yoon, prompt by Steph Sinclair and Kat Kennedy:

Congratulations Nicola, Steph and Kat- you made my favourite story in this book! Talk about saving the best for last. As previously stated, I love all things myth and legend. So the prompt “Gender-flipped God of War” is so far up my street it’s in my back garden.

I could go on forever about this short story, but I’ll dial it down as much as I can.

The writing style from Nicola was amazing; a diary documentation kind of layout, watching Sera grow and seeing from her mother’s eyes what was happening. It did make me laugh a few times throughout; especially when little Sera put up finger guns to the murderer and said “bang bang”. I thought that was just a very funny image. 

The best part of this story was the POV flip at the end. We’d seen from Sera’s mother’s third person POV that Sera had been extremely ill, and then it had jumped to Kareena watching Callie being burned alive by Sera.

But the POV flip to Sera’s POV creates a reallllllly condensed version of the last 15 or so pages, showing the reader how she felt this entire time. She changed her appearance dramatically by dying her hair and wearing contacts because she wanted her mother to love her, and the “light” she was feeling was something she knew was dangerous so she tried to conceal it, making her ill. 

And then we find out that her sister tried to kill her while their mother stood and watched, hence why Sera killed her sister. This moment had my mouth nearly to the floor. Beautiful writing from Nicola and a perfect prompt from Steph and Kat.

1. Your first OC ever? Vikara Amarina Nellenryll. I’ve had characters before, but she was the first one who really stuck, who got a background and everything. She was my go-to oc for everything.  2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs? Alena Fanelis-Lavellan (dragon age)  3. Have you ever adopted a character or gotten a character from someone else?Nah 4. A character you rarely talk about? Seirein Xavier (adopted by Charles,) my X-Men OC. Her power is that she can make anyone do anything with her voice, so she’s resolved to be mute. She and Logan end up together.  5. If you could make only one of your OCs popular/known, who would it be?  Alena. Or idk, Belladonna Hawke. There aren’t enough Varric x Hawkes out in the world. I love both those bitches. 

6. Two OCs of yours that look alike despite not being related? Most of my Hawkes look similar tbh. I try to make them different, but I’m a slut for a strong-nosed, big-lipped, tawny-skinned woman.  7. Are your OCs part of any story or stories? AHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Yes. Hands down. Most of my Dragon Age OCs are already in stories, or are at least mentioned because I have them set up in specific timelines. Alena is getting her own goddamn biography. Belladonna is 5 chapters into her own story. My FenHawke is 37 pages into her story. I’ve got a oneshot posted with my Hawkebela. (Da2 is my fav game tbh.) My non-DA OCs have a few stories, too. Seirein is one chapter down in hers, my Sole Survivor has more than a few oneshots down, etc.  8. Do you RP as any of your OCs? If you do, introduce one of your RP OCs here! No. I’m uncomfortable with RP since a friend destroyed it for me a long time ago. I used to be super big into it, but now it just makes me squeamish.  9. Would you ever be willing to give any of your OCs to someone else? Fight me. (Maybe Rastig. He’s a little shit.)  10. Introduce an OC with a complicated design? Idk what that means. A physical design? Most of them just get scars. I mean, Anna Hawke is deaf in one ear. Genevieve is blind. Idk. She was born in Redcliffe, taken to the Circle at age 6, broke out with Anders at age 16, got separated from Anders, went to Denerim, was taken in by Cyrion and his family, was caught up in the slave trade, was sent to an abusive master in Kirkwall, killed him to escape, was caught by Cullen and taken to the Gallows, broke out of the Gallows, found Anders again, Anders was crazy, got help from Hawke (Belladonna) to get to the Sundermount Dalish clan, was taken in by them, found them all killed in year 7, was taken to live with Clan Lavellan, hated it but didn’t want to be alone so she allowed them to give her vallaslin even though she didn’t want it, Conclave, Solasmance, Solas broke up with her, finally Cullenmance.  15. Do you like to talk about your OCs with other people? Idk. Kinda? Kinda not though. I get shy really easily. I like talking about them. But with other people? Idk.  16. Which one of your OCs would be the best at biology (school subject)? Marina Shepard 17. Any OC OTPs? Among just my OCs? No. I don’t ship my girls together. I’ve had her for like... 7 years now? She made it through a bad breakup, high school graduation, and all of college.  20. Do any of your OCs sing? If they sing, care to share more details (headcanon voice, what kind of songs they like etc)? Genevieve Hawke sings frequently at the Hanged Man. She’s a Mezzosoprano if she really gets going and she tends to get throaty with it, kinda like Christina Aguilera or Gaga. Marina Shepard can sing but she’s a bit shy to do it. If her friends can boost her up enough, she will for them. She’s a tenor.  21. Your most artistic OC Vikara Lavellan writes poetry. Brilla Aeducan draws/paints (she painted Leliana fireside one night.)  22. Is there any OC of yours people tend to mischaracterize? If yes, how? People think Anna Hawke hates Sebastian, but that’s not true. She’s just threatened by him because she’s a mage, and he’s very vocal about turning in her mage friends. (She used to feel the same way about Fenris, but she fell in love too fast.)  23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like? Most of them.  24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why? Genevieve Hawke. She’s a very strong, proud woman.  25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?) Tbh, most of my OCs are just re-coded versions of myself. Except Rastig. But I guess Anna Hawke. The story I mentioned with her is focused on her weight issues and how Fenris helps her learn to love herself (and vice versa.)  26. Have you ever had to change your OC’s design or something else about them against your will? I mean, I’ve had Vikara for 7 years. Alena is actually about to fall into a well and ponder her death because she didn’t tell anyone, so, her.  30. Which one of your OCs would most likely have a secret stuffed animal collection? Asena Adaar. Josephine thinks they’re darling, and they talk about their dolls together.  31. She’s nothin’ but jokes, nonstop, though once in a blue moon, she might reblog a picture of a nice ass (tastefully, of course.)  32. Do you have any twin characters? Yes! Belladonna Hawke was a twin to Garrett Hawke (who is deceased.)  35. Any sibling characters? Beyond Belladonna, no. I only have any human DA characters because I didn’t get a choice with Hawke. Even my queen is, in my lore, an elf because I really don’t like humans. Introduce any character you want I have a Labyrinth story I started.............a longass time ago. The main character is Jacqueline (the French, not the American,) and she’s the daughter of Sarah. She is mute for most of the story because she was driving in an accident that killed her father. Sarah contacts Jareth and asks him to help fix Jack, help her overcome her guilt and trauma, so he takes her to the Labyrinth.  40. Any fond memories linked to your characters? Feel free to share! Not really. I love them all, the wee babs.  41. Has anyone drawn fanart of your OCs? If yes, maybe show a picture or two here (remember sources & permissions!) Nope.  42. Which one of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek gods? Titania Shepard. It wasn’t a huge leap for her to go from Shakespeare (where she supposes her namesake comes from) to mythology.  43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It’s time to confess I like big noses, strong cheekbones, brilliantly colored eyes, and scars. Lots and lots of scars.  44. Something you like about your OCs in general They’re like my friends.  45. Can you tell those who don't know you a little bit about yourself. I’m the author of eight – soon to be nine – novels, six of which have been Sunday Times Bestsellers. To date, I’ve sold one million copies of my books around the world and my novels have been translated into eleven languages. How would you describe your new book, Christmas in St Ives? Christmas in St Ives is my very first Christmas e-novella and it’s a prequel, too! It features characters that appear in my ninth novel, Somewhere Beyond the Sea next year. It was so much fun to write and is set, like the novel, in my favourite place on earth – St Ives in Cornwall. It’s fun, festive, romantic and I hope like a little Cornish mini-break in a book!   When you are not writing what do you do?  I’m mum to my three year old daughter, Flo, so when she isn’t at nursery she’s my main employer! I’m also a singer-songwriter and a session singer, so occasionally I have performing or recording jobs, although not so much since having Flo. Apart from books, what films or TV shows do you like?  So many! I love Gilmore Girls (the original series, not the awful remake Netflix made last year), Dear White People, Glow, Broadchurch, Shetland and Vera on TV and I’m more than a little obsessed with George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, too. For films my all-time favourites are You’ve Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping, The Philadelphia Story and Before We Go. How do you choose your covers, must be difficult, they are all wonderful? Which one is your favourite and why?  I don’t always get a say in my covers, but I’ve been very lucky with the designers my publishers have found. The cover for Christmas in St Ives is gorgeous and I’ve just seen the cover for Somewhere Beyond the Sea, which is one of my favourite covers yet. Have you ever had any one not believe you can do it? Lots! The very first person I told I was writing a book (when I was 18) told me it was a childish thing to do and it knocked my confidence so much that I didn’t try and write again for ten years. And even when my first book, Fairytale of New York, was discovered on an online site for unpublished writers and I was offered a book deal, I still had people telling me it probably wouldn’t happen. What matters is that you believe in yourself first and keep believing no matter what. It helps that my lovely husband Bob is my biggest cheerleader and I have a great group of friends who believe in me. I think selling a million books kind of proves the naysayers wrong, so that’s what I focus on when I have doubts about my writing! What is your writing process?  It varies from book to book. I used to start writing at the beginning of the story with only a vague idea of where I wanted it to go (so much more fun, but not good when you’re a mum and your time is short!). Since having Flo, I’ve had to be more disciplined with my time, so I work out a plan before I start writing. I handwrite the plan because for it sticks in my head better when I’ve seen it written down. Then I write the first draft, check it and send it to my publisher. There are then several edits, so it’s a steady process and good that I know I can change things and refine the story as we go along. Which of your books is your favourite?  I love them all in different ways. Some remind me of where I was in my life when I wrote them: It Started With a Kiss was when Bob surprised me with a Christmas Day marriage proposal; When I Fall in Love was the year we got married, so I was planning it while editing that book; Take a Look at Me Now was our honeymoon; and I wrote and edited I’ll Take New York while I was expecting Flo. I’ll always love my first book, Fairytale of New York, because it was my first and I wrote it largely in secret over seven years. And I adore Searching for a Silver Lining and A Parcel for Anna Browne because they were both stories that had been bubbling in my mind for years, so I was so proud to see them finished. And I have to say I absolutely love Christmas in St Ives because it was a ball to write and, I think, is the most perfect Christmas story I could have written. What got you in to writing, did you always want to do it? I fell in love with books as a little kid when I was taken to our local tiny library in Kingswinford. I asked my mum when I was five if our library would put my book on the shelves one day and I think that’s where it began. I’ve always loved writing and always done it, but being able to write and publish books for a living is the biggest dream come true. I feel very lucky! If you were to do it again, writing each book, what would you do different?  I would probably apologise less and stick to my guns more! Having said that, I believe each book I’ve written is a stage on my never-ending writing apprenticeship, so I’m not sure I’d change anything because it’s all part of the journey. The only way you really learn how to write a novel is to actually write one and I learn so much with each new book I write. I always want my next book to be the best I’ve ever written so far and keep growing as an author. Who is your writing inspiration? I am inspired by writers who are brave and keep going, who refuse to be boxed or defeated by whatever life throws at them. My writing heroes include Sarah Addison Allen, Neil Gaiman, Sir Terry Pratchett, Simon Toyne, Rowan Coleman, Julie Cohen, CL Taylor, Tamsyn Murray, Kate Harrison, Cathy Bramley, Rachael Lucas, Kat Black and Genevieve Cogman, to name but a few. What is your favourite book or books?  I love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen, Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell and more recently I’ve adored Where Love Lies by Julie Cohen, The Summer of Impossible Things by Rowan Coleman and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. Who gets to read your work first? To be honest only I read it in full before my publisher, although I have a couple of close friends who are writers whose advice I treasure. I’ll very often bounce ideas off them as I’m writing but I don’t ask them to read it before I start the editing process with my editor. My husband Bob helps with ideas if I get stuck, but it tends to be advice I seek as I’m writing rather than sending it out to beta readers etc. If you weren’t a writer what would you be doing?  I’d love to be able to do music full-time or be an actor. How long does it take you to write a book?  The first draft can take anything from six weeks to two months. Having said that, I wrote both the first drafts of Christmas in St Ives and Somewhere Beyond the Sea in just over eight weeks. I wouldn’t recommend writing two stories in eight weeks, though! My quickest was the first draft of Take a Look at Me Now, which I wrote in four-and-a-half weeks – but I didn’t have a bouncy Flo back then, so that explains why it was so fast! What do you do if you feel your book is going down the lines of another book you have read and how do you correct it? I don’t read books in my genre while I’m writing a first draft, mainly because I’m scared of either bringing elements subconsciously into what I’m writing or, scarier still, discovering someone else has already had my brilliant idea! I write from my gut feeling and I think that hopefully stops me being too similar to anyone else’s work. If I did find I’d named a character the same as someone else I would change it but thankfully that’s only happened once when I was writing. I’m inspired by film references more than books, though, so my next novel, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, is a You’ve Got Mail-type story of two people who fall in love before they meet. It’s not You’ve Got Mail, obviously, but I loved the idea of your heart deciding who to love before your head works it out. It’s an idea you can see in Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Great Expectations, etc, so I think ideas can be passed down from generation to generation for authors to put their own spin on.
