OHH BOY ok so I'd think I'm a crackpot for this but since we're talking about Zack "Foreshadowing" Morrison. I have some thoughts

No harm in leading with the (chronologically) first thing that jumped out at me:

This one IMMEDIATELY made me antsy whenever I came back to it after my initial read, and considering Zack has referred to it on twitter in the past as one of their favorite jokes it's definitely not been forgotten about.

Second, the sheer amounts of near-misses, jokey or not, of Spender narrowly avoiding specifically lightning

Again, not much, but it's weird that it happened thrice, latter two of which had real gravitas rather than an one-off joke.

And third, Spender himself. He's repeatedly shown himself to be kind of a self sacrificing idiot, as well as prideful to a fault. Granted, it's both him and Mina trying to take on all the responsibility of saving Mayview and its inhabitants from their fate.. But Spender is exactly that right measure of doesn't-value-himself-enough (chest footprint aftercare or lack thereof), having an obscene amount of power (enables his loner act + pride) and poor judgement that has the capacity to put him at great risk. And it has!

Spender has not only shown low enough self-esteem to view himself as the de-facto scapegoat for the safety of the town, but also prideful enough to make very bad calls that end up in people, often himself, hurt (COUGH FORGE INCIDENT COUGH)

This is all conjecture, but it's definitely enough to make me worried about him :') Even if all this doesn't mean he'll necessarily die he's definitely getting (even more) seriously injured at some point. I love the guy but he's so far doing a horrible job of convincing me he wants to live bad enough to circumvent at least that

i rewatched the episodes again, and izzy's whole “redemption arc” should have been left out honestly. i know the writing is suffering because we have fewer episodes this season, but the writers chose to spend a lot of that very limited time focusing on izzy for some reason, and yet his character is completely inconsistent.

it doesn't matter that the crew accepts and supports him, it still doesn't make sense for him to suddenly be singing songs and wearing makeup, when he was threatening to kill ed for acting soft and not wanting to be a pirate in 1x10. this 180 turn was not set up in any way and they have not justified it. season one izzy was not secretly dreaming of love, acceptance and community lmao, like WHERE are these motivations coming from??

i really thought this episode batch was where we were gonna see him own up to his part in the whole kraken ordeal, cause his whole arc DOESN'T WORK without that. but all we got was ed apologizing AGAIN, making izzy out to be the victim, when we all know he was creaming his pants from eating toes in season one.

THIS is what feels like fan service to me. in the worst way. this feels like fanon actually.

it feels like since izzy was such a popular character in season one, they thought they had to redeem him so that they could keep him around and make his stans happy, cause it would not make sense to keep season one izzy around for this long.

there are some other issues with the writing this season, that i blame more just on the cut down to 8 episodes, but this whole izzy thing is on the writers cause they chose to put so much focus on him. if they didn't have the time to write a proper redemption arc for him, the whole show would've been better served by spending that time on the other characters; like jim and olu, who've been completely sidelined this season.

#izzy's character isn't even consistent with the start of the second season honestly #when he was crying about maybe being fired #that was much more in line with the character they established in season one lol #whose motivation was wanting to be a captain- #and when that didn't work #cause he's an awful captain #he reverted back to living vicariously through the glory of the blackbeard legend #now imagine if we spent some of the time wasted on that half-assed izzy arc on instead fleshing out olu and zheng yi saos relationship more #it felt so weird and ooc that jim olu and archie was just gonna up and leave the revenge and the crew for this woman olu barely knows #what happened to the found family on the revenge? #i was ready to ignore this whole izzy situation for the most part but episode 6 took it way too far #and seeing as we've now only got one episode left it's clear the other characters on the show won't be given the spotlight they deserve #because izzy literally stole their screen time #our flag means death #ofmd s2 spoilers

#personal #exciting korean learning tag #i've been wanting to try italki for like months but (a) schoolwork got the better of me this term LOL #(b) there are sooooooo many options so it took me a long time to decide on some tutors to try #(c) once i finally thought I had a short list some random youtube video recced preply so i looked at it #instantly found aNOTHER tutor I felt like i would really like #but then read a bunch of HORROR STORIES about how preply works and how the system screws over its tutors a lot #but i was like well okay but i really like this tutor so LOL #(d) so then all of this accomplished i ran up against 'oh my social anxiety isn't even that bad except when it is' #so i had to be batshit insane like looking up what the etiquette is for booking lessons and contacting potential tutors sdkjnfkjfnnf #ANYWAY i think this will really help me improve a lot!! #i do extremely well with one-on-one teaching bc i have a pathological need not to waste ppl's time LOL #and my main problem rn is it's hard to consistently create opportunities to practice + hold myself accountable #so assuming these tutors work out i'm hoping to start doing lessons a couple of hours a week :)

I'm glad that almost all of the pages done while that back injury was still making my life a painful and sleepless/restless hell have been mostly posted now. Thre's some stuff I didn't like how the initial drawing came out for that, in a normal situation, would have just been a (quick fix), but I was so uncomfortable/in pain and slowed down to such an absolute snail that every single thing became a "Well that's good enough"

Anywho, back injuries really Suck. Going forward, due to how much time I lost with said back injury and another "out of my control" event that set me back during my buffer's run, I'm likely going to adjust the coloring technique on Soli. The coloring technique I've been using, when not injured and not being blindsided by a majorly stressful event, is one I chose due to it being a comfortable, quick painting style that I'd use for concept work. It's the style I work in most naturally and fast since for many things I'd just forgo the drawing stage at all, but it does require me being able to work without pain or without numerous unplanned interruptions. So, with my buffer practically gone and having lost a year to Snail Mode on the waves of that back injury, I'm going to likely adjust things to a looser version. As in, "there's a imddle point when I'm working where I enjoy how things look. In order to catch back up to where I was and want to be, I think I'm going to just use that stage to my advantage." Did I say back injuries suck? They really suck. Grateful that it's finally better now, but shaking my fist at the damage it did and all the other little instances butting infront of me and getting in my way. The ol' "CAN THINGS STOP HAPPENING??" plea lol. Anyway this is just a ramble serving as a heads up for "chapter 3 may look a little different, because the number 1 way to make sure I'll circumvent something's bullshit is to Make it Happen Anyway and I've got catching up to do."
