Ok so genuinely wondering because I just saw this: does anyone out there actually mind the ads on Tumblr? Because in my experience they've been the least annoying social media app to use in that regard.

Reddit? Yeah their ads are absolutely awful and frequently just have hate speech, so I run a custom version of Infinity.

YouTube? God fucking damn their ads are horrific, imo YT is entirely unusable without blocking the ads somehow, so I use NewPipe+SponsorBlock which doesn't even require me to use a Google account.

Instagram? They aren't too horrible? But the ads auto play with sound and are weird and scammy and gross, and they track the shit out of you, so I patched their app anyways.

But Tumblr...? Honestly one of the only websites/apps I've ever used that isn't an absolute shit show without an ad blocker. They could give me like 50% more ads and I don't think I'd even care. The ads on Tumblr aren't even hate speech or scams or just gross like other platforms, idk if maybe that's pure luck or what but they're just less bad overall.

So like on the one hand yeah ads are generally a Bad Thing™ for user experience, but Tumblr does it right, and I'm guessing the fact that they're not currently making it worse means that it works for them, right? /rant over

what the fuck my best friend is currently playing through the mobile game cut the rope, which came out in 2010 and was originally a one time purchase of $1 for iphone and $2 for ipad. it’s now free with constant ads. it costs $10 a month to remove the ads. if you want to play fucking cut the rope without ads you have to fork over 120 usd per year. to play your toilet game without ads. i think we should start enacting greek myth style punishments on these app developers. they have to roll a boulder up a hill for eternity and the boulder is covered with ads and every time it slips out of their grasp and rolls down the hill there’s an unskippable minute of ads beamed directly into their brain as they jog after the fucking boulder

YouTube at 1 am is fucked.

It just assumes you're asleep so it plays ads right? But not just any ads, it either plays 3 in a row that are 2-3 min long each with a 15 sec in skip button on each, or it plays one 30 minute long ad that you can skip at 5 sec.

So, they're banking on you falling asleep watching YouTube to make a profit.

That is unless you have manage your ad preference on, then you can click the little circle above the skip button, even appears on the unskippable ads, and click stop seeing this ad, then you never see that ad again.

The absolute state of YouTube ads

As someone who has been using an adblocker for at least a decade, and is currently having to pause it on YouTube, here are some things I've noticed which I haven't seen anyone else bring up (yet).

You can no longer tell when ads play in a video

I'm pretty damn sure there used to be a small yellow segment in the video progress bar, so you could at least know in which parts of the video there would be ads. Now, they just start out of nowhere, and if it's a longer video and the creator has shoved all their ads in the last 10 minutes, you're hit with a barrage of ad after ad.

Ads will just play whenever

In a similar vein to the previous point, unless the creator has carefully integrated the ads with their video (e.g. "before we get into that, I'm just going to play some midrolls" or "I'll be back after this short commercial break"), the ads will play in the middle of whatever the video is about, completely ruining the immersion. I don't believe many YouTubers integrate their ads in this way.

I've heard some people say that sitting through 1-2 short ads isn't as intrusive as sitting through 5-10 minutes of them on TV (such as in this video by SomeOrdinaryGamers). And I honestly cannot agree. As some have said, YouTube ads don't have the same moral standards as TV ads, and this is true, although I myself haven't yet seen any ads of dubious morality since pausing adblock.

But my main gripe with this take is that again, TV ads have set commercial breaks which the vast majority of YouTube videos do not, and the time between these breaks is ~20 minutes depending on the country (see Wikipedia). This means the ads won't start in the middle of a sentence or dramatic scene in a nature documentary.

You can:

Predict when the ads will start based on how long it's been since the last commercial break

Predict when the ads will start based on predicting when the scene in your program is going to end

And, of course, you can change channels during a commercial break, and watch something else in the meantime, or just get up and do something else since the commercial break lasts long enough to do that.

The ads in YouTube are too short to warrant changing tabs, so instead you just mute the ad, and sit there staring mindlessly at the screen until the ad finishes, or until you can click the skip button.

YouTube ads are high maintenance

As I've just mentioned in the previous point, you can't get up while the ads play, or switch tabs. You have to mute the ad, and just wait. Wait until the skip ad button appears, or until the two unskippable ads play out. In total, it probably only takes about 30 seconds, so why would you try to do anything else?

And if it happens to be a morally questionable ad, you might also want to report it.

All YouTube ads are videos

What happened to the little popup ads that you would just click the 'x' on and you're done? Have I just been unlucky and not seen any, or are they actually gone? This is a genuine question btw.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss popups. Relatively speaking, they're way less intrusive than video ads, because you can keep watching the video already in progress. And if they do still exist, then at a much reduced rate than the videos, at least in my experience, given that I haven't yet seen one.

Adblockers should not be against YouTube's terms of service

This is definitely my weakest point, and I'm positive others have already brought this up. But what I do on my Personal Computer (emphasis on Personal) should not have any bearing on my relationship with the websites I visit, and if it does, it will make me question my usage of that website.

If the conditions surrounding your adverts are causing a large portion of your userbase to turn to adblockers, maybe instead of biting the hand that feeds you, you could improve the conditions and make adverts less intrusive, and keep better tabs on what kinds of ads you're approving. The change in revenue wouldn't be instant, but more people would eventually stop using adblockers on YouTube. If you recall what happened on Tumblr, userbases are actually happy to support sites they feel deserve being supported.

Overall, YouTube is pretty great, and while there are certain competitors out there, none of them do exactly what YouTube does. But forcing ads might make people turn to alternatives anyway.

Getting back to television, there isn't a law against changing channels or just turning your TV off for 5 minutes and making some toast. If you never watch a single ad on TV, your TV licence won't be revoked. TV commercials have a good system that hasn't really changed much over the years. Maybe commercial breaks have gotten longer, but that's it.

YouTube really needs to improve the QoL surrounding ads, because people will just continue using adblockers which update to circumvent YouTube's anti-adblock system.

TL;DR

YouTube ads are somehow more annoying than TV ads because they don't have set commercial breaks unless the YouTuber integrates them accordingly, and it sucks.

I think youtube almost killed my laptop's wifi card. I run Ublock Origin on Firefox because I have limited data each month and used to lose a lot of data to ads, and I was getting 30 second unskippable ads every minute. I was doing just fine until recently in the last month when my internet connection kept cutting itself off. A bunch of experiments led me to realize it was my laptop's wireless connection, and now I either have to keep running troubleshooter or reset my network connection and restart my computer- this is every day, mind you.

I got fed up and decided to start watching YouTube on my ps4 because I want to watch things besides looney tunes reruns, and it works fine. Except now I'm being bombarded with upwards of 30 to 60 seconds of unskippable ads- it's changed from last time too, so its not just "ad 1 of 2," it's a solid 30 second timer that just plays ads until they finally let you skip.

Meanwhile, while this is going on, guess what? My laptop doesn't lose internet connection at all now that I'm not watching YouTube videos on it.

Conclusion: youtube's selfish, self absorbed war on adblock was killing my laptop. I've ordered a new wifi adapter anyway for like $15 after shipping abd taxes, so they're not winning against me. But still, they're fucking lucky I'm broke or I would sue their asses.

Anyway, to any youtube big wigs that might happen to read this: go fuck yourselves. For every ad I see on your platform, I make a mental list of businesses not to support. I'm not paying you losers any money for services that used to be free within MY lifetime, and you earn enough money from Google as it is. I'm not financially supporting you jerks that keep chasing off content creators or outright being hostile to them while allowing your outdated and poorly programmed content flagging system to flag every video they put up. Get the hell over yourselves and behave like actual human beings, and make a SENSIBLE ad system that does not waste my data, does not interrupt my video, does not waste my time, and most importantly DOES NOT FUCKING TRY TO KILL MY COMPUTER, or go fuck yourselves. I refuse to pay you a single penny, because you'll just make it more expensive and hide more previously free features behind a paywall or force me to watch ads anyway. I do not exist to consume fucking ads, I am stubborn and vengeful as hell, I will not lose to you pathetic corporate pieces of shit.

And guess what? Ad blockers are legal and recommended by experts and even the FBI (Google it, it's because cyber criminals use ads as a way to scam people! Wow! Who would have thought those fake Mr Beast ads telling you to "click here for $1000" were harmful!)

You will lose your war with ad blockers one day and we'll all dance happily when it happens.

The progression of ads becoming more and more unskippable and longer and longer infuriates me like nothing else I swear.

Going from a little box you can click out of real quick, to a 10 second ad, 30 second ad, to a 30 second ad you cant skip, to a 1 minute ad, to 2 ads back to back but if you skip the first one in time you can watch your video, to now you can skip the first ad but we're still gunna play the second ad.

The thing that sticks out most to me I think is the one flashback scene in Blinding Light, where Chrom's remembering his father becoming Naga's new vessel. The way he describes the change in his father after becoming her host, the dramatic change in his eyes -- and especially how vividly he remembers Emm's terror at the whole thing. It just has such a punch, particularly because it's a memory from when he didn't know enough to be really scared himself.

I think that was my favorite scene to write of Chapter 1!

I had a lot of fun playing with how possession is usually handled in the series (Loptous especially), where instead of a sudden thing where the demon/dragon/whatever takes hold of the victim it's instead this fucked up public ritual where Naga's light slowly enters the current Exalt's body and completely burns their soul along with it in a twisted "purification".

And most of the time, much like with Chrom's father, the Exalt accepts this willingly and considers it an honor to become Naga's new body.
