a/n: xavier warriors, I hear your call, I respond. anyways this is pretty much stupid and insane bcs I absolutely love selkies (they are basically seals that can turn into humans using their pelt) you can google if ur confused.

There was nothing funny about this. You place your pelt by your side and the next thing you knew, it wasn't there.

A pelt is something very personal to a selkie, and everyone knew that, this went beyond a mere prank.

Now here you were transforming into a fucking seal in the woods alone because, of course there's no body of water near you to dive in.

This is fucking stupid, I have leaves stuck on me, I'm going to throw up, you gagged, which came out as a loud squeaking yelp.

Your angry internal seal monologue was interrupted as you hear loud footsteps running towards the woods.

You stay behind the tree as Rowan enters with Wednesday Addams following him.

It was bizarre what was going on, one moment she was trying to speak to him, and the next, he had her pinned on the tree.

You squeaked in fear, causing him to drop her, suprised. Their eyes glance at you behind the tree for a second before a largely built monster lunges at Rowan and devoured him.

Wednesday's movements only froze for seconds before she sped her way out, leaving you squeaking for help.

The monster's gigantic disgusting eyes stared right into your little sea-lion soul.

Hopping out of the woods was inefficient but also your only choice, so you hopped like a giant bunny as the monster attacks you from behind, grabbing you in one hand and ready to squish you into pieces as your eyes widen and you squeal for your life.

Your panic was halted as a small arrow shoots through his head, it wasn't strong enough to kill him, but enough for him to drop you.

"Stay away from her!" A voice you know too well, shouted from your right.

A wolf lunges at the monster, pushing him back, before a few more of them joins in the bloodbath.

You yelped as you feel hands pull you up to their chest, Xavier grips you to him as he runs out towards the fair, where Wednesday and Enid stands alongside Weems who was already phoning the police. Too much of this evidence can't be removed nor be denied.

She rushes Xavier to go back to the school and he obeys immediately with the other students.

You see him with your pelt slung on his shoulder before he rushes you two back.

The car ride was worse than almost being killed. The way he kept glancing at you, biting his lip from laughing, and immediately failing when you squeaked at him angrily.

"Im- sorry, it's just, I- I mean look at you -"

You squeaked again and slap his hand that tried to squish your slimy face.

Your boyfriend has a way of making you melt and also wanting to shove his face in a bucket of acid.

But god you'd miss that face if it was ever ruined.

He insisted on you transforming when you've reached your dorm so he can carry you up and indulge watching you in your seal form whole repeating terrible seal pickup lines and receiving slaps on his face that he takes too easily for your liking.

When you finally get the opportunity to be back in your human skin and clean yourself from the dirt, you feel relief washing over you, despite your boyfriend's attempt to make you laugh, you were still in a state of shock.

Xavier's own fear was not subtle either, as much as he tries to hide it, and his insistence on sleeping in your dorm that night was only another confirmation.

You swore you'd see nightmares of the monster in your sleep that night, but wrapped in his arms and feeling him press a kiss on your forehead, you woke up the next day with nothing but him on your mind.

Scott calling Hank his oldest friend in that one panel is so funny to me, bc he’s known Bobby and Warren longer. It’s probably not that serious but I can’t help but take it that way.

To be fair though him warming up to Hank fastest makes a lot of sense. They’re both high achievers (but in different ways, so not really in competition with each other), and Hank’s friendly enough to get past Scott’s barriers, I guess. Warren is really understandable bc I can imagine Scott (possibly Hank to a lesser extent) may be alienated by his privilege (and hate him sometimes while vying for Jean).

Bobby’s exclusion kills me bc he and Hank share the “team goofball” role half the time, so it’s like he found Hank amusing but not Bobby. It’s probably bc Bobby’s the youngest (by like. 2 years tops) but still.

Scott: I care about all my teammates equally. Also Scott: I don’t care for Bobby.

"It's not my fault my jokes are funny and Bobby's aren't."

Yeah, it's one of those things where, Hank was the second to last person to get added to the team (technically last, since they retconned it that Jean was Xavier's first student but not the first X-Man, to account for all the telepathic training/psychic coma therapy they had to do), but of the O5, I actually think Hank may well be Scott's best male friend? Or, well, was, anyway.

We obviously have no idea how long it was in between each team member being added, it could have been successive days, weeks apart, maybe even months, but I always got the impression it was relatively rapid fire, so the difference in the amount of time that Scott knew Hank, Bobby and Warren could just be incremental - and like you've mentioned, Hank and Scott have the kind of personality types that gel out of the gate.

They're both deferential to authority (at least to start with); they're both relatively orderly; they both idolise Professor Xavier (again, at least to start with); and while Hank is a joker at times, especially during this time period, he keeps it much less loose than Bobby does, which I think Scott would respond to.

It's something you can see in Parker's First Class - even though Hank will do shit like this

he's also not the kind of person to question the orders of a field team leader, he just does what he's told because he trusts that it's the best course of action. Bobby, meanwhile, can barely take things seriously, because of the immaturity that dogs him for pretty much his entire life, and while I think Scott probably warmed to that as time went on and he learned to loosen up, Hank and Scott just have a great team chemistry - if you think about it, Hank is, most of the time, the McCoy (ironically) to Scott's Kirk.

Keep in mind, of course, that I don't mean the wider public perception of Kirk, I mean the actual, canonical version of Kirk, who was stated to be a walking stack of books at Starfleet Academy and who never settles down with women not because he's a philanderer, but because he's absolutely dedicated to the Enterprise.

Sound familiar?

Hank's emotionally sensitive enough not to push, but friendly and funny enough to get Scott to lighten up - and even as they change, even as time goes on, you can see that they have a really special bond. I really don't think it's a coincidence that if you look at a lot of X-Men teams, going all the way up until the 2010s, Hank and Scott are almost always put together.

Scott just . . . does not talk to a lot of people like this. I miss it.

I really hope we can get some of this back with MacKay's book. I feel like a lot of people are going to suddenly remember that Hank is an amazing character and a beautiful friend to so many X-Men when he's not being written like trash.

on account of him being insane and full of arasaka brainworms, not much would've been unforgivable to him, other than anyone possibly bringing any sort of harm to his daughter. he Would kill whoever dared to do that, even though it's against arasaka protocol. she is far more important to him than his job would ever be. after he finally gets out of there and becomes a regular functioning man, that would Still be 10000% true, but it also extends to other people who are in his life now, and he's WAY less likely to let shit slide. he will call you out on it bc he actually Cares now <3 well. he would have done before but. he's finally in a place where he can act on it.

🍕: How does an OC spend a lazy day?

back at arasaka, he wouldn't have had a single lazy day at all ever, so now that he finally can, he is taking advantage of it as much as he possibly can. he will Not get out of bed until 11am at the earliest. don't even try to get him out earlier he Will fall asleep wherever he is. by accident or on purpose?? no one knows. he will also try to annoy his daughters as much as he possibly can. [daughters?? plural?? yes. dont worry about it] having the world's longest bath in the history of forever. if someone needs to pee well they will have to wait he is not going anywhere. makes dinner and is Very gay about it.

everyone in his family has the same nose, and dark brown, almost black eyes [which he eventually changes back to soemtime in the future teehee]. it's a very distinctive nose, and anyone who knows about his family in any capacity, can very easily spot when someone is a vidal. for better or worse. he got is love of cooking from his mother, and his painfully annoying stubbornness from his father. not exactly a shared trait, but more or less something he learned - he would put his life on the line for his siblings no matter what, even when his father told him to only look after himself. he never listened, and is definitely better off for it. he would always choose to help someone in need instead of walking away, every time.

🍪: What is something that's sentimental to you OC?

the van he used to live in for the few years between getting kicked out of his family and joining arasaka, there was only enough room for a small mattress and all his belongings - there werent that many, most of his stuff got passed down to his siblings. his whole life was in that van, but once he joined arasaka, he was forced to sell it, belongings and all, which he was understandably very upset about. just over a decade later, he finds it again, and - a facking miracle - everything in it was left completely untouched. the outside needed to be fixed up quite a bit bc of how rundown and rusty it was, but he didn't care. he loves fixing up cars. he's just happy all his stuff, all the photos of him and his siblings, etc etc. is safe. and he can look back on it all again.

Ok I just finished watching Wednesday so I'm gonna put my rambling thoughts under the cut

MAJOR SPOILERS for the show

First I've gotta put my thoughts on Tyler. Ngl I wasn't the biggest fan of the love triangle for aroace reasons and also it was just kinda cliché and boring, but Tyler seemed like a nice enough and he seemed to genuinely care about Wednesday. Needless to say, the reveal took me by surprise, although as soon as Wednesday had the vision it all started to add up because Tyler had very much been there for every one of the murders. Honestly, I thought that twist was pretty well done.

I actually did!!! Figure out about Miss Thornhill!!! Not for any particular reason, but I know that in murder mysteries, the murderer is usually a side character (who has a good relationship with the protagonist to throw the viewer off) and she was one of the characters who seemed to fit the role best. And then the thing about Laurel was revealed, which also fit perfectly. By that logic, my suspect list pretty much consisted of her and Dr Kinbott.

Xavier was an obvious red herring. I did think it was a little funny that Wednesday accused him because he knew what the monster looked like and had been at the scenes of all the murders. My girl, those things are all true about you as well.

On the subject of Xavier, I didn't actually mind him as a character. He was mostly decent, but he was a dick to Bianca and I liked her. He also seemed had a more genuine connection to Wednesday than Tyler did from the start because they'd already met that one time at that funeral. Not sure how I feel abt him as a love interest, but he's always been on Wednesday's side so he could be a good friend to her at least.

I absolutely adore Enid, she's v fun and a great friend to Wednesday. And they even hugged in the end!! And I just! Love how much they love each other, even platonically. Obviously I'd prefer it if they ended up together, but I do adore them as a friendship as well XD

I also loved Enid's wolf form!! I'm always a bit apprehensive when characters shapeshift at all, especially if it's cgi etc. But I thought the design suited her really well!!

Actually going back to Wednesday and Enid bc I lov them, I think Enid is the character who Wednesday's relationship has had the most development with throughout the series. Does that mean she should be the love interest? Who's to say....

I do actually!! I have a Lot but I know I. hardly talk abt others most of th time dkjfnakj (outside of Chainshipping Adam and Lawrence are genuinely some of my fave characters individually)

a big fave for me is Amanda! I relate to her in a lot of ways and also she just makes me so so sad,, I rlly wish she'd realized sooner than III that John didn't actually care abt her & was just using her to further his agenda. she has so much potential and I believe she deserved to have her character explored more + also I just want her to be happy wtf!!! I've spoken abt this w my bestie Adam but like imagine if she (and Hoffman & Lawrence) was the one to take John Kramer out. like they have had Enough and just fucking get his ass. I simply think it's what she deserves <33 and also like smth else I think abt a lot too is the fact that even though she got clean after going thru the RBT/becoming an apprentice, she ended up self-harming (we don’t know if she’d been doing that Prior to her test) and in reality that is just trading one harmful addiction for another and I hate that John used that loyalty to allow that. he ENCOURAGED her to do that bc it meant that she’d rely on him for guidance, bc it’d keep her dependant on him and thus would ensure that he’d always have her assistance. I hate that man so much Mandy deserved better!!!

I have also been fond of Strahm since I first saw him in IV lmao. part of that is he is Tall and Pretty and I am Gay but also bc? his character ALSO deserved to have been explored more!! he's also someone who had so so much potential and I wish his narrative had been more like. fulfilling? if tht makes sense. I'm particularly fond of the idea (which is actually mostly canon) that after what happens to Perez, he ends up acting as a sort of vigilante Jigsaw hunter. IDK I just adore that idea (also I wanted him to at least know Perez was okay b4 he died. I have no idea if he did but it breaks my heart to think he died not knowing she was alive, even if she was killed off in V - which by the way was ANOTHER shitty decision).

GIBSON!! I love him he's such a fucking dork. that scene where he's like "it's a safe house, Jill. safe. house." and IMMEDIATELY AFTER palmer comes in like "hoffman knows where we are" is SO fucking funny, esp the look on his face. I can't help it I'm sure that scene wasn't supposed to be funny but it was. but anyway! I think part of why I'm drawn to him is bc he has a very strong moral compass (like Strahm, though perhaps in a different way) and I do genuinely think he wants to help ppl and keep them safe, and I think he's also willing to bend the rules if it'll help ppl. I know he's in one movie and he Dies In It but IDK... funny little guy. I care him.

I've spoken abt it a little bit but I've adored Laura since I first watched II. it just kinda struck me how she's so kind and she's so scared and she didn't deserve to die the way she did. she didn't even deserve to be in the HOUSE (along w pretty much everyone in that trap,, I have conflicting feelings abt Xavier though) and the fact that she was literally abducted from her own car in the middle of the night. I don't know she just strikes me as someone who has such a big heart and wants to be able to trust ppl and then she gets forced into hell. Laura baby you deserved better and I wish you'd survived <//3

Both Daniel Matthews and Daniel Rigg!! I genuinely love Rigg so much and it pisses me off beyond belief that his flaw according to Jigsaw was... caring abt ppl?? like yes I do agree tht Rigg was absolutely overworking himself + needed to give himself a break and that his focus on the case was unhealthy but Eric was a close friend of his and like... he felt guilty that he let Eric leave. he just wanted to find his friend. I totally understand why he went through the door, knowing that Eric was on the other side even if he didn't know what'd happen when he did go through. he breaks my heart dude!! he deserved better too.

and Daniel!!! Daniel is such a sweetheart, esp the way he interacts with everyone, the way he covers up Gus's head to allow him some dignity, the way he keeps close to Laura once he notices her getting weaker and tries to encourage her to keep going,, he's just this sweet kid who's acting out due to problems at home when at his core, he just wishes his family wasn't so splintered. I'm also heartbroken abt the fact that like. he saw most of his fellow captives die and then Had To Kill One Himself. and then when he gets out? one of the only ppl he trusted turned out to have been responsible for putting him there AND his dad is missing after doing everything in his power to make sure Daniel was gnna be okay. he makes me so fucking sad dude.

so I'm gnna gather these next ones together but Eric, Mallick, Art, and William (Easton). I've spoken abt Eric and William here a little bit b4 and I do want to clarify tht I do not condone/excuse their actions bc I have gotten. shitty asks in th past abt them frm ppl who seem to think I just excuse their actions bc I like them?? which is So not the case lmao

but! moving on. as I'm a lot more nervous to talk abt him than I used to be, I haven't discussed Eric for a while but rest assured I am thinking abt him always. again my bestie adam creates SO much good content for him and is like one of th only ppl I feel comfortable talking abt him with so like! a lot of my thoughts center around the AU where Eric survives the ice block trap and learns to cope w his life after. the reason I included these four together is bc they're very intertwined in the SAW polycule (which was also created by Adam <33)! it also like... breaks my heart to think tht like. Eric spends the entirety of SAW II thinking his child is in immediate danger and he can't do anything to help him. his entire motive is finding his son. has he been kind of a shitty father so far? yes, honestly. but no one cld ever say he doesn't love Daniel. it also destroys me to think abt how in canon, Eric probably didn't even know Daniel was okay!!! like that level of horror is too much for me man!!

Mallick is honestly so. I don't even know how to explain it. I relate to him a lot as well bc we have very similar tics + th way we experience things? like he spends so much time trying to make himself smaller, even if he's brash and somewhat abrasive in the way he talks to the rest of the Fatal Five. he'd known Brit for all of an hour maybe and was willing to sacrifice himself for her if it meant she'd get out. he harbours so much guilt abt the fire he set and what it did to innocent ppl, which was not his intention but a result of his (and Brit’s) actions nonetheless. I rlly do think he'd been torturing himself internally abt tht + thus sees the fact he'd ended up in a Jigsaw game ("I knew this was going to happen to me") as a sort of karmic punishment, due retribution he didn't receive as he was never arrested in connection to the fire. I don't know there's so much abt Mallick that makes me sad and honestly I just want him to be happy too. if you want fantastic Mallick meta (and amazing meta in general) then I have to suggest @ericmatthewz + his meta takes (who has so far been mentioned in this post as my bestie Adam kjfhakj ily <33)

Art!!! I am so fond of him. was he an apprentice? was he an unlucky bastard who happened to have been tested twice (which is interesting, considering Eric is the only other person that’s happened to)? we don’t know! and that’s the interesting part. if he WAS an apprentice, I like to think tht he wasn’t an active participant in John’s nonsense - his job was to set up Rigg’s tests and keep watch over Eric + Hoffman and nothing more. I definitely don’t think he agreed w what John was doing, and I also think he had a lot of like. compassion for Eric. ‘cause he didn’t have to stabilize him after he tried to jump off the ice, he didn’t have to interact w him at ALL, but he did those things anyway. he saved him anyway. that stuck w me for some reason. if he WASN’T an apprentice, I rlly do think it’s just another show of John’s hypocrisy (”It can’t be personal” okay old man so what the fuck is w Lawrence and Art and William and even Amanda as a patient at Jill’s clinic?? huh??) and an exercise of power. Art was doing his fucking job. Are Rex and Ivan terrible ppl? absolutely and I don’t feel bad for them whatsoever! but the nature of Art’s occupation is tht sometimes, you don’t get to choose. sometimes you have to play devil’s advocate bc That’s Your Job. I’m not saying all lawyers are innocent here but like... it’s His Job, you know? just. jhfkjsa. same reason I hate how John treated Lawrence.

WILLIAM. okay. I totally get where ppl are coming from when it comes to like... discussions of his job and the problems that lie within rejecting coverage of medical needs, esp bc healthcare is a shitshow in th US and often doesn’t help the ppl that need it most, but. I find John’s treatment of William very... invasive? implanting the key in his side, hooking those explosive bracelets/anklets into his skin, tattooing him permanently under those devices - that’s all incredibly invasive and intentional. like John doesn’t want William to forget how he thinks of him. And the fact that none of his trials were recorded in the sense that Tara & Brett (both of whom I can totally understand why they wouldn’t like William, from their perspectives) or Pamela cld see what he sacrificed for his team. that is also smth I believe was intentional.

we’re shown countless times that William tries to do whatever he can to make sure ppl make it out, but John’s constructions of his tests mean that he just Can’t which! again! is intentional!!!! and that fucks me up!!! I rlly do believe at his core William is a man who believes he’s doing the right thing (even if the system is Incredibly flawed) and what he wanted at the end of the day was to keep ppl alive and safe and the fact tht he cldn’t is smth that weighs heavily on him and I dunno. I just think abt tht a lot. (I am so sorry for this huge paragraph)

last three are Jill, Diana, and Corbett <33 Jill I just think is neat + I often think abt how all she wanted to do was help ppl, how she probably made a genuine connection with Amanda and cared so deeply for her that she still checked up on her when she could, and the fact that her desire to help others inadvertently caused the greatest tragedy she’d ever experienced thus far, though it wasn’t her fault whatsoever. I often think abt how she’d had to grieve alone (”I lost him too”) and how hard that must’ve been - and then John was revealed to be the Jigsaw killer, and I Know that had to have been Such a blow. I care abt Jill and I rlly don’t like th way her story ended. she’s such a strong character and it very much feels like a cop out to have her killed off in the way she was! after everything she’d been thru!! to have someone so caring with such a big heart endure such hardship only to kill her off when she’s on the cusp of like. beginning to heal and maybe put John behind her was a Bad decision tbh. + also this is also a brief opportunity to say that I’ve considered Jill/Kerry b4 and like in an AU where they both survive? badass vigilante gfs who will singlehandedly end Jigsaw if they have to (and who cld team up w Perez & Strahm too :3c).

Diana and Corbett!! my girls!! all I have to say abt them is that I’m very attached to them bc they’re just kids. they are literally not even in double digits when going thru Jigsaw’s bullshit and I Hate that (I hate tht Daniel + Brett were involved just as much!!). I do find it interesting that as a villain, Jigsaw has no qualms abt endangering children when typically that’s a hard limit for most villains, but I fucking hate it at th same time bc again. they are KIDS (goes to show how fucked up John’s doctrine is too djfkasdks). I like to hc them as being close friends both as children and throughout their lives + are good + supportive for one another <33

funny. mean in a more digestible way than she was used to. he had barbs n she liked the way people winced when they tried to swallow his company. when she got paired w him for a class project she met his eyes across the room n he didn’t quickly look away like most ppl. something abt that intrigued her. a sharp fingernail inside her head kept having to itch at something n she realised it was the urge for him to call her a bad name. this weird craving to hear an angry word inside his mouth just for her. she used to think that’s what someone wanting her was like. still does sometimes. this both pissed her off n caught her attention which is a bit of an accomplishment fr someone who gets bored by everyone n everything.

current impression:  

his heart’s more good than she expected. it felt a bit like having a cat drop a dead mouse at ur doorstep that u don’t know what to do with when she realised that. she felt uncomfortably like her mother when she couldn’t get out of his bed bc she was too depressed n that rly made her feel like. ill honestly. he did all the right things but suddenly she just felt sick abt the whole situation which is Not the normal reaction to ur bf caring about u but bradley doesn’t understand ppl caring abt her. felt more like pity. she thinks he’s better off. she misses him sometimes bt then she reminds herself she doesn’t miss people. does a good job of believing it. one of the best ppl she’s dated not that she’d say it.

strange little fella which is a very high compliment. kind of reminded them of an animated turtle come to life in the human realm altho they honestly don’t have an explanation for that it’s just the way their brain works. they love the turtles in finding nemo tho so maybe there’s some sort of correlation. very nice face. they kind of wanted to hold his head like a bowling ball just so they could examine it properly. i feel like when they first met him they probably reached out n smoothed a sticky label onto his forehead that said ‘catfish in chernobyl’ n they had one on their forehead that was blank n then they just wafted a pen mid air n were like ‘wanna play guesses?’ even tho that isn’t the name of the game. as if that was just. a completely normal introduction to someone. sean makes them think of that artificial blue raspberry flavour some popsicles have n how it’s always rly fun when they stain ur tongue. sweet n exuberant n leaves a bright impression. he lets them ride on his skateboard sometimes rolling along being lead by them holding his hand n nyla likes to shut their eyes like they’re a bird sailing above the clouds. one of their favourite things to do especially when the sun’s out. bc of this nyla thinks sean was a bird in his past life but not a greedy one like a seagull or a plain one like a pigeon. maybe a bluebird bc of his eyes. he makes them laugh a lot. they entrusted him to babysit their children (as pictured) in his hair for a whole day and night once n they had lots of fun with him so nyla thinks he’s very trustworthy and kind. he also is rly easy to talk to like they cld randomly be like “i’ve been thinking lately that maybe homer simpson could’ve been a good figure skater” n sean wldn’t look at them like they’ve lost their marbles he’d just go w it. they like his company a lot.

Okay, onto my stuff...

I was honestly surprised to get anything written in 2020, never mind an entire October’s worth of ficlets. I don’t know what stars aligned to let that happen but I did appreciate it, otherwise this would be a terribly sparse post. In fact, looking at my AO3 list, prior to October, I hadn’t posted anything since December 2017, yikes. All credit for that long hiatus goes to my soul-draining previous job and my doomed obsession with The 100 (which for whatever reason I found almost completely unwritable). 

But fortunately I found a fandom and a prompt challenge this year that got me writing. Everything on this list is from those halcyon days of October - because I wrote nothing the rest of the year - all based on whump prompts, and all about Diego from The Umbrella Academy. In reverse order, because that’s always more exciting:

5. Nothing Good Starts In A Getaway Car: A mostly dialogue fic, all just for the sheer joy of writing the siblings bickering, seasoned with some worrying about Diego (who is, lbr, kind of a woobie). 

4. That Renfaire Life: Historical puns! Costumes! Time travel! Niche historical facts! Outright lies! Lila meets Diego’s robot mum! I really crammed a lot into this one - I just wanted them to really make use of time travel, and also to put Diego in a codpiece and Lila in fancy velvet, and for them to have an in-person ‘I love you’.

3: Box Of Rocks: Because I think I’m funny. What can I say, I just like it when Diego is being a spectacular dumbass, and Lila is yelling at him for being a dumbass while also saving his life. Also, snuggling for warmth.

2. Comin’ Home Baby: Not because I wanted to write the Umbrella Academy people with kids, but because I thought they’d be terrible with them and that was hilarious to me. I now have a whole AU in my head for this, where they basically do the Xavier Academy for Gifted Children thing, only... well, they’re trying their best, and they should get points for that.  

1. Wicked Games / My Girl Is A Heartbreak (look, it’s really a two-part fic, it’s not cheating): Because once I got an image in my head of Lila as Catwoman to Diego’s Walmart Batman, it would not let me go. So much so that I even commissioned artwork (a spectacular decision, 10000/10).

So, that's me. I hopefully will get some more writing done next year, in less of a manic fashion, but let’s not jinx it.

The Dark Knight - one of my bby heath’s best performances, one of the only superhero films I’ll ever love

Pride and Prejudice - I love these straights with my entire heart

The Importance of Being Earnest - this is my kind of comedy tbh

Room - really hard to watch at points but it’s one of those movies that made me fall back in love with film, I found it breathtaking

The Truman Show - my worst nightmare in a really good film

Inception - I’m still fucked up by this film honestly, what kind of messed up thriller action @ christopher nolan

The Social Network - andrew garfield going off in this film is everything

Walk the Line - did you know this is another film I used to watch at least once a week for a couple of years

Lion - I cried and cried, the casting for little saroo and then dev patel is perfection

Jackie - admittedly the being brought up around jfk obsession might be an influencing factor here but what a performance from natalie portman

Ex Machina - that oscar isaac dance scene will stay with me

Gone Girl - more women fucking things up tbh!!!

The Lives of Others - this follows a Stasi officer who is eavesdropping on a couple and it’s one of the most fantastically put together, heart beating fast films I’ve ever seen

Get Out - I can’t wait for jordan peele to do more stuff, this was truly an instant classic horror film

Sense and Sensibility - I think in hindsight 7 year old me was just a bit in love with kate winslet in this movie, this is still a go to comfort film for me

Romeo + Juliet - as some of you know, I was weirdly obsessed with this movie at age 5 to the point where I’ve seen it hundreds of times so that’s a thing

Persepolis - such a beautiful mixture of gorgeous style and social commentary

Dead Poets Society - absolutely heartbreaking, even worse now with robin williams but a complete must watch if you’re a film lover

Atonement - so many shots in this are completely stunning, a story that will stick with you and also my fave film costume of all time (keira in that green dress)

The King’s Speech - colin firth as king george vi, v quiet gentle film but fantastic

You’ve Got Mail - the height of 90s romcoms with tom hanks and meg ryan and a classic in my heart

Bridesmaids - honestly I can never remember laughing more in the cinema than I did at this movie, I need more good female comedy films

Catch Me If You Can - I just love the playful chase vibe of this film, leo dicaprio was so perfect for it

Misery - read the book first pls!! but then come and enjoy how fucking incredible and terrifying kathy bates is in this film

Musicals

Moulin Rouge - this is one of the film loves of my life, there’s not a single moment you could ask me if I want to watch it and I’d say no

The Sound of Music - man did I go through a sound of music obsession as a kid, I was brought to the singalong as a 7 year old and

Singin’ in the Rain - the dancing alone brings me an unreasonable level of joy, should also be in the classics section and perfect to watch at christmas

Once - this is close to my heart since it’s set all over my city but it’s also just quietly beautiful with one of my favourite soundtracks ever

Billy Elliot - I love the film even more than the stage version, everything about it is so well done and young jamie bell is perfect as our little ballet dancer

Chicago - this film is just such a joy, like considering the subject matter is murder it’s so much fun

Classics

The Philadelphia Story - I also fell in love with katherine hepburn in this film, her with cary grant and james stewart is some of the most amazing early comic timing

Brief Encounter - this is a classic romance on its head a bit and it was a film I absolutely could not thinking about as a young teen, completely fascinating

It Happened One Night - fucking love it, claudette colbert is unbelievable with that sharp tongue and that hitchhicking scene is Iconic

Rebecca - does it feel conceited to say one of my fave films is my name? sure but while this isn’t quite the book, it’s such a classic suspense film

Funny Face - okay that age difference is fucked but audrey hepburn absolutely shines in this film, there’s one dance scene of hers that going to haunt me forever bc it’s weird and oddly sexy and a little genius

Some Like It Hot - great and hilarious all round with amazing comic timing plus classic marilyn, prob one of the first classics I ever fell in love with as a kid

LGBT

Moonlight - this is up there as my joint fave film of all time, it moved me unlike almost anything else I’d ever seen and I think about it every single day of my life

Pride - great story of the lesbians and gays support the miners movement, there’s so much love and joy and pride in this film and it means so much to me

Brokeback Mountain - fun fact: this is the first gay movie I ever saw and I used to watch it at least once a month if not weekly until heath died and I couldn’t anymore but it’s still one of the most heartbreaking and meaningful things in the world to me even if it’s incredibly tragic and ruined me

Carol - 50s lesbians!! they love each other!! I would die for them!!

The Way He Looks - beautiful brazilian teen love story, one of the scenes is the most tender thing and it still makes my heart flutter

The Normal Heart - all the pain, set during the aids crisis and will shatter your heart completely

A Single Man - this film hurts and just be warned for death in general in it but it’s stylistically stunning, as we should expect from tom ford

I Killed My Mother - I think this is still my fave xavier dolan film, plus the paint scene is another iconic one

Documentaries

Citizenfour - the edward snowden stuff fascinates me, watch this rather than the utter shit that is the snowden film

13th - I would watch anything that ava duvernay makes and this is a particularly well made look into race and the prison system

The Queen of Ireland - a bit of a personal thing since my local gay bar is owned by the drag queen star of this film panti bliss but it’s a good look into lgbt stuff in ireland as well

The Celluloid Closet - essential gay documentary watching, gave me as a baby gay a lot to think about

Book Review 12/52

Um, so in light of this book I would like to go back to that book (link) and promote it as being mostly not racist with some weirdly racist moments! A huge improvement.

Cut for length, also tws for anti-semitism, islamophobia, slavery, etc.

Church History: In Plain Language, 4th edition by Bruce J. Shelley, revised by R.L. Hatchett

Naming both of them as a way of calling them out for this complete atrocity.

I understand that writers of a work on Christian history may not be 100% up to date on Jewish historical thinking (or Muslim historical thinking, or post-colonialism, or whatever the current revisionist theory is). I do, however, expect them to keep most of their prejudices in check and be aware that they are writing a work which has the potential to influence readers towards or against other groups.

Groups like Jews, and Muslims, and, though I can’t believe they need my defense, Catholics.

And yet, here we are, having read a book that spectacularly failed to take any sort of care in handling delicate subjects, of which Christian history has many.

This review mostly focuses on the anti-Semitism because of reasons that start with “l” and end with “ived experiences”, but rest assured that there are weird outbursts of Islamophobia in the chapters on the 700s and the chapter on post-2001, and anti-Catholicism--fuck you both in particular for making me defend Catholics--basically everywhere.

Anyway I saw how much research the authors had done (”none”) when the book started off with a lot of very common assumptions about the Roman Empire complete with “but don’t worry the Christians didn’t do that” (examples: abandoning infants, slavery, orgies). Then the authors went off and made it clear that while Romans had executed Jesus, they had done so at Jewish urging, placing the blame on the Jewish community.

I thought we were done with this? I thought deicide was a fringe accusation since 1945? No? Apparently not.

Then the next chapter, apparently the reason the early Christians split off from the Jewish community after 70 CE was because the Jews forced them out, instead of the reason I have seen literally everywhere else, which is that the Christians left in order to distance their new sect from the anti-Semetic discrimination being ordered by the Flavian emperors.

This is followed by a hundred pages that are not without their charms (did you know that the Roman empire fell because orgies led to not enough children?) but fail to mention Jews absolutely anywhere. Including in the entire chapter dedicated to Augustine, notable for a number of things (and entirely deserving of a chapter) but notorious for declaring that Jews should be allowed to live and not forced to convert--in order that we may bear witness to all the impressive things Christians are doing.

(This, btw, is one example of something that happens routinely: Problematic TM things that Christians did are left out in favor of repeating their praises again, just in case we had forgotten.)

Anyway Jews finally return to the narrative in the weirdest way, when the authors reach the Crusades (also treated generally weirdly): “For seven centuries Christians have tried to forget the crusades, but neither Jew nor Muslim will allow them to do so.”

... Right. Moving on.

The book is super weirdly divided, with the first half covering 0-1500 and the second half from 1500 to the present. Also, in the first half, the majority of that is spent from 0-500. Very little is spent on the Middle Ages & the Renaissance, and virtually nothing on anything outside Western Europe and the USA. What’s a Russian Orthodox? God I hope that never becomes relevant ever.

Then there’s a chapter on the Iberian spread of Catholicism! Great! This is what I wanted after reading the other book!

This was... not at all what I wanted holy crap. Among assorted historical errors (The Treaty of Tordesillas did not put a line through or near the Azores mostly because nobody knew exactly where they were), the authors manage to justify slavery and give the barest of mentions to de las Casas before rampaging onwards. I just have to...put quotes here because it’s otherwise really hard to get that I read a book last updated in 2013 that justifies slavery.

Spain's first policy toward the Indians, called ecominda, granted the Spanish colonists a number of Indians who were supposed to toil in the mines and on the plantations of their captors. For their trouble the Indians received protection and instruction in the holy faith. Since the Indians were guilty of gross crimes such as human sacrifice and idolatry, the Spanish felt duty bound to stop these barbarities.

Okay so 1, encomiendas were grants of land...and slaves...to successful conquistadores. They were slave plantations! Straight up! Everybody knew this! And 2, you are justifying slavery.

Good god.

The Portuguese faced a problem [in asia], however, that the Spanish never encountered in the Americas. They met highly developed civilizations and ancient religions far stronger than those of the Incas and Aztecs.

In Japan, however, Xavier confronted a people with so many marks of nobility, he shifted his ground.

Yup. Looks like the authors are weeaboos.

Anyway then there was some aggressive skimming bc despite what the authors think, I really do not care about developments in Protestantism...basically ever? But especially not post-approx 1700, which is generally when I stop caring about history.

Except! They fit in one last crime against history.

An entire chapter on World War 2, where once again I am down to just quoting because I really can’t...comment on how bad this is.

The twentieth century brought the colossal struggles of political and military giants: Communism, Nazism, and Americanism. A new paganism appeared in appeals to the laws of economics, the passions of race, and the inviolable rights of individuals. Christians were forced to suffer, to think, and to unite in new ways.

[...]

The Protestant churches in the lands of Luther lost millions of people to this new political religion [Nazism].

[...]

Nazis abandoned some goals of Enlightenment thinkers, such as individual freedom and tolerance.

[...]

A newly invented version of Christianity followed in which The "Nazi Jesus" had nothing but contempt for the Jews and their corrupted testament.

breaking my own words to comment here bc I don’t think a lot of you will get why this had me frothing at the mouth: In Christian hands, Jesus has had nothing but contempt for Jews and our “corrupted testament” almost since the beginning; it was definitely a pretty common accusation from about 1200 in Western Europe. So no buddy, this one is 100% on Actual Christians and not Nazis, who they are weirdly eager to turn into pagans.

The dedicated Christian's place in the Nazi world was no more secure than that of the Jew.

Liberals embraced only the biblical teaching that fit with their sophisticated understanding of God. They abandoned unseemly descriptions of God found in Scripture and tradition and embraced a vision of God that met their own standards. The outcome was the same as with Nazi theology: unchecked idolatry.

This placed the Vatican firmly on the side of persecuted believers in the totalitarian countries.

And other things the Vatican didn’t actually do until 1998.

Anyway this is super long, I hate this book with everything in me, the last chapters were yelling about “homosexual rights” and radical Islam, I am shocked, what’s a pogrom they never came up. Funny how that works.

So @oraclegazes mentioned letting out my Xambrose headcanons and an anon asked pretty much the same thing. Really this is sort of wish-fulfillment for me and I have to let it out now that I know someone wants to know and I couldn’t fit it all in one reply. Just tryna write damn it lol still more than happy to do this these are just a few headcanons. I had a shit ton more but this is already getting really long

Alright so these two dorks meet when Roman drags Dean along for an UpUpDownDown segment w Sasha and Seth and the whole happy family

(Dean doesn’t want to go but that’s beside the point)

Like Dean ofc has seen Xavier backstage and fought him in the ring but this is the first time he actually gets to meet him (bc Dean doesn’t do outside normal interactions)

IMMEDIATELY Xavier is bouncing all over Roman and Dean and Dean’s like “wtf why” and tries not to be too weirded out

though he secretly finds it kinda funny and cute

So everyone gets to playing and dean sorta just sits off to the side, offering commentary and watching this little nerd

Xavier mentions Dean getting in on the action and Dean hasn’t touched a video game since he was eight and Mrs. Pacman was a thing

But then Seth calls him out and dean gets in on the action bc of course he’s not turning down Seth’s challenge

He also fails to notice Xavier’s pure smile of joy but that’s beside the point

Dean, of course, gets his ass whooped like it isn’t even a contest but Xavier’s all nice and encouraging even when everyone else is laughing and teasing

“I pressed the wrong button like three times how is that a good job”

“But you hit me a few times that’s good!”

Xavier secretly finds the homeless looking ginger quite cute when he gives a small smile

Xavier makes sure to compliment him at random intervals in their game bc it makes Dean smile a bit shyly at the praise

Dean gets invited for more video game lessons to help him not suck as much and he happily agrees

These two keep up “video game lessons” for a few weeks. One is an actual UpUpDownDown thing, but the others are just sessions to play

The only game Dean is good at is Mortal Kombat so they end up playing that a lot

One time Dean gets so excited after winning a match he brings Xavier in for a side-hug, grinning like a madman at the victory

Xavier tries to hide the blush that goes along with his smiles, hoping Dean doesn’t notice

Dean ofc notices and being a sneaky little shit makes a challenge so if he beats Xavier he does something for him

Xavier is confident and it’s a hard match but Dean wins barely

his prize is to kiss Xavier and Xavier is sure he’s turning a dark red but he nods and they kiss, a bit slowly.

It’s quite unlike anything either one has felt; Dean bc Xavier is a little gentler than he’s used to, Xavier bc Dean is a little more confident, but there is a hint of hesitancy.

Right as soon as they pull away it’s decided that video games are no longer needed as an excuse to get closer

(Though when they have dates a lot of them are video game sessions)

Dean turns out to be the v shy, uncertain one as time goes on. He asks a lot of the time if he could hold Xavier’s hand or seems to think twice about kissing him like these guys aren’t even in public half the time and Dean is so unsure he feels the reason to ask Xavier for permission to show affection

That night Xavier insists on taking care of Dean, threatening him if he doesn’t let him

Dean complies bc Xavier gets very serious about this and he doesn’t want to argue

Afterwards Xavier gets a little shy as well and hands Dean his gift, which Dean almost doesn’t accept because he wasn’t expecting anything, but he loves it

Next time Xavier uses it on UpUpDownDown he credits the gift Dean gave him “a present from my favorite person in the world”

Dean most certainly does not grin like an idiot as he watches this backstage on his phone before one of his matches and the heart and “Love you” Xavier sends him over text most certainly does not occupy his thoughts the whole match
