IN a week - what I’ve never seen in a Steve 80’s pop star AU!!! his hair? joes actual voice? THE FACE? He’s always giving pop star to me
Yessss thanks sm for requesting honey!
join the party
popstar!Steve x fem!reader ♡ 705 words
“Oh wow.” You swipe a magazine from the rack by the checkout. “The sexual exploits of heartthrob Steve Harringon? Inside source tells all?” You raise an eyebrow at your boyfriend. “Stevie, is there anything you’d like to tell me? Has Robin sold you out?”
“She would,” Steve allows, not even looking at the magazine as he sets your groceries on the conveyor belt. Nancy has told him a million times to not risk being out in public like this, but he says he misses the mundanity of it. I just want to go to the mall and shit like that with my girlfriend, that shouldn’t be a big ask. So they’d compromised; Steve sacrifices the volume of his hair every time he goes out by squishing it under a baseball cap, and Nancy gets the peace of mind knowing that there’s no chance of her most big-time client being recognized while his hair (practically trademarked, at this point) is covered. “But she has even more fun with feeding them ridiculous stories. She says my real life is too boring.” He wraps his arm around you, drawing you away from the magazine rack. “Monogamy, you know?”
“Such a drag,” you agree, gratified when he presses a kiss to the top of your head. “Wanna see what she told them?”
Steve makes a noncommittal humming sound, but he leans over to watch as you leaf through to find his page. “Ooh, this is a good picture of you, babe.” Steve winks at you from the page, skin glossy and laminate. “Okay, so you slept with every single girl at Hawkins High while you were there, you…apparently had a very passionate fling with an heiress on vacation in Bora Bora, and you were found in a closet, completely naked with two girls at a party…in uptown?” You gawp at him, feigning betrayal. “Stevie, was that the party last week? When did you slip away?”
He jostles you by the shoulder. “Shut up.”
“You’re so sweet to me. Hey, look—” you pick up another magazine, reading off the cover, “The seven-step regiment Steve ‘The Hair’ Harrington doesn’t want you to know.”
“You’re joking.” He scrambles to see over your shoulder, and you laugh, showing it to him.
“I am,” you confess, and Steve actually sighs in relief. “It says five steps.”
“Suckers,” he scoffs. “Don’t fuck with me like that, babe, that’s my income you’re joking about.”
You laugh again, reaching up to take his hand where it’s slung over your shoulder. “Don’t sell yourself short,” you say, intertwining your fingers. “It’s only like, ninety percent of your income. You’ve got some talent.”
Steve looks at you, eyebrows rising nearly to the brim of his hat. “Oh yeah? Changing our tune from the car this morning, are we?”
You scoff, but he only wrestles you closer, pulling you tight against his side. “I didn’t say you were a bad singer, I said you couldn’t hit the same notes as Madonna.”
“But I did,” he says smugly, taking out his wallet as you approach the checkout.
“Well, you tried.”
Steve hums disappointedly. “M’gonna have to rethink all these free, private concerts if my audience doesn’t appreciate them,” he says.
You smother a laugh, pressing a hand to your chest in a show of dismay. “What? No, please, Mr. Harrington, you can’t do that. I’m your biggest fan!”
“Harrington?” The cashier, a man not much older than you or Steve, looks up from the groceries. “Like, Steve Harrington?”
Steve tenses, and you feel instantly guilty for your dramatics. “Yup,” you say quickly. “I’m a big fan of his.”
The man nods. “Me too. Heard he’s back in town for a bit.”
“You don’t say.”
“Yeah, but I mean, we probably won’t be seeing him around much,” he says matter-of-factly, shrugging his shoulders. Steve looks down as subtly as he can, hiding his face under the brim of his cap. “When you get that famous, you can’t just be going out in public like the rest of us. Poor dude would probably get mobbed.”
“Probably,” you agree, smiling as you squeeze Steve’s hand in your grip. He sneaks his other hand to your waist where the cashier can’t see, pinching scoldingly at your side. “Wouldn’t want that.”

brain damage
i’m back again y’all and just wrote this piece... a bit of a scene study from that scene in 3x06. basically what i wish mike had said
also the middle part is mostly conjecture but some of it is bits that you can hear in the actual scene if you strain your ears and ignore nancy and jonathan talking over it
also DISCLAIMER i do not hate max!! i really like her actually but she was really pissing me off with this whole bit because she just does not have any basis for understanding mileven's relationship and so her advice doesn't always directly apply. she had good intentions but BRUH. anyways i could go on a whole rant about max vs mike in season 3 but i'm not gonna do that right now lmao
It’s pretty silent in here, El thinks. It always is, but tonight it’s… strange. Almost as though it’s empty. Why can’t she find them? She’s been sitting in her room for the last half hour trying to locate any of the flayed and although she can’t see it, she knows there’s a growing mountain of bloody tissues next to her on the floor. She’s starting to think that she might need to give herself a break for a little bit.
Her friends are in the living room waiting for her, and she knows they’re all anxious to find out what she might see. So far, absolutely nothing. The only thing that happens is that every so often she hears a bit of a voice. It’s just there, tickling the edges of her consciousness, and she could tune into it if she wanted to… but she’s already identified it by the cadence of the noise as Mike’s voice, and she’d said she wouldn’t spy on him. She’d done it once and he was clearly upset by it. Although they aren’t really back to how they were before, El misses him more than she lets on, and she doesn’t want to make things worse by spying again.
Outside, Mike is getting close to yelling. He sincerely hopes El can’t hear him because he is once again fighting with her new best friend.
“It can’t be good for her to be in there for this long,” he exclaims, pacing in front of her door.
“Mike, you need to relax,” says Max, looking disdainfully at him.
“What if she gets brain damage or something?!”
“Oh shit,” interrupts Lucas, looking between them. “Is that like, a real thing?”
Max scoffs. “No, it’s not. He made it up. Mike doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about,” she adds, raising her eyebrows defiantly as if daring him to refute her.
“Oh, and you do?! ” He retorts. Her facial expression alone is pissing him off. It’s so self-righteous, as if she knows anything at all about him or how he thinks and feels.
“No,” she says quickly. “But I think El does. See, that’s the difference between you and me. You think you know everything!”
“I don’t know everything,” he fires back. His hands are balled into fists and he’s starting to shake. “But I know her.”
Max snorts. “You’re just mad she wants to be her own person. You can’t deal with other people not doing what you tell them to.”
“What do you think this is, Russia? I’m not some dictator, okay? I’m just trying to protect El!” He says angrily. This is getting more and more ridiculous by the second. Max doesn’t know the first thing about what he can or can’t deal with and acting like she does is striking his last nerve. Mike can feel the familiar boil of rage deep within him coming to a rise.
“The only person who knows anything about El’s powers is El,” says Max, with an air of finality.
Mike crosses his arms in an attempt to get himself in control of his emotions. “So if that’s true, what makes you think you have any more of a say than I do?”
She splutters for a moment and it’s so satisfying that Mike almost smirks, but it drops quickly when Max rises from her seat and stalks over to him.
“I don’t,” she seethes, poking him forcefully in the chest. “But she does, and you need to back off .”
“I’m not even on! ” He yells, throwing his arms up and pushing her away. He realizes his statement doesn’t actually make any sense but… whatever. At this point, it’s not like it matters. “She won’t listen to me! Because you put ideas in her head! You know she absorbs every new thing people tell her and you pressured her into dumping me!”
There it is. It’s out. It’s what he’s been thinking since it happened. He knew he’d messed up big-time by lying to El, but he never would have expected her to dump him over it. And the look on Max’s face as she stood by and watched had said everything he needed to know.
Max’s face is turning an alarming shade of pink and Mike thinks that he probably matches her. “I didn’t pressure her into anything, she decided! What is your problem with letting El decide things for herself?!”
“I don’t have a problem! At least I didn’t before you inserted yourself where you didn’t need to be!”
“All I did was give her choices!”
Mike takes a deep breath to retaliate, but then lets it go and turns away. “You don’t understand. Just- fucking leave me alone.”
Lucas is still staring at them; Mike can feel his friend’s eyes on his back. Why isn’t he agreeing? He was there when El- he knows what she can push herself to.
Max makes an angry noise. “Fine! It’s not my fault you can’t be wrong!” She walks toward Nancy and Jonathan and Mike follows, preparing to convince everyone else that this is a stupid idea. “Okay, can you guys settle an argument for us?”
Nancy looks hard at them, her eyes searching Mike quickly before flicking back to the girl next to him.
“Who do you think should decide El’s limits… Mike, or Eleven?”
He sees red. “The way that you framed that is such bullshit. ” Why is he the villain here?!
Her braids whip around her face as she turns to him. “It’s not bullshit, Mike, this is your whole problem! And it’s also precisely the reason why she dumped your ass!”
“El dumped you?” Nancy asks incredulously.
Mike throws his arms up again. “Yeah, because she’s conspiring against me! She’s corrupting her!”
“N- enlightening her!” Max throws back. “The fact is, she’s not yours. She’s her own person, fully capable of making her own decisions.”
“She’s risking her life for no reason!” He shouts.
“No reason?” Says Nancy. “Mike, the flayed are out there doing god knows what-”
“Killing, flaying,” interjects Lucas.
“Transforming into monsters,” adds Will.
Mike glares at them. Not helping.
“And El’s not stupid,” Nancy continues, shaking her head. “She knows her abilities better than any of us.”
“Exactly, thank you,” Max says victoriously. Mike closes his eyes. He cannot believe this is how this is going.
“And she is her own person-”
“Exactly!”
“With her own free will-”
“Exactly! El has saved the world twice and Mike still doesn’t trust her-”
At that he has to interrupt. There’s no way he’s letting Max flip this around. “You wanna talk about trust, really? After you made Eleven spy on us?!”
Max looks down, giving herself away.
Lucas stands up behind him. “Wait, what?”
Mike whirls to face him. “Oh, she didn’t tell you this?” He says sarcastically.
“No!”
“Your girlfriend used El’s powers to spy on us ,” he spits.
“No, no, no,” Max interjects. “I did not make her, it was her idea. And why are we even talking about this, seriously?”
“Yeah,” says Will. “Who cares?”
And now Mike’s annoyed at Will too. Will has no idea what is going on in Mike’s head and he’s not ever going to understand why he feels the way he does. Just the same as the rest of the Party will never really relate to Will’s struggles because they weren’t there, Will wasn’t there for theirs either. He didn’t see what she did-
“I care!” Says Lucas, and finally Mike is glad someone seems to be on his side. Thank God for small blessings.
“Yeah, I guess girlfriends don’t lie, they spy,” he says, turning back to Max at the last moment so she can truly see his ire.
“We were just joking around,” she defends.
“Would it have been so funny if I was taking a massive shit or something?” He asks.
She wrinkles her nose. “You weren’t!”
“But what if I was?!”
“Then gross!”
“Seriously, Mike?” Interrupts Nancy, and all of a sudden this has become like one of those moments where he just wants to strangle her for talking before he’s done. She does it all the fucking time and like, he guesses it’s probably part of being siblings but it leaves him fuming more often than not.
“I’m just trying to demonstrate how careless Max is with Eleven’s powers,” he says carefully. This is where he needs to get his point across. He desperately needs someone to understand that he’s not trying to be controlling or police what El does or doesn’t do, he’s just trying to save her from herself. He couldn’t do it the first time, but by God if he isn’t going to try now.
“Have any of you noticed Lucas is the only one not disagreeing with me?” He asks.
Max huffs. “Lucas doesn’t have anything to do with this. This is your prob-”
“Lucas has everything to do with this!” He roars. Mike has absolutely had it up to here with her and turns on her a final time, shaking again. “You weren’t there, Max! None of you were. Except Lucas. You don’t know what she’ll do..” His voice trembles.
Lucas seems to understand what he’s getting at and lays a hand on his shoulder. Mike flashes him a grateful look. He still has a hard time thinking about that night, much less talking about it. “She vaporized herself in front of us. I tried to stop her and she did it anyway.”
The room is silent now, the only sound being the TV static from El’s bedroom where she’s still holed up. Mike takes a breath.
“It’s not that I think El doesn’t know her limits,” he says. “I just know that she doesn’t care about them. She’ll die overexerting herself before she lets something hurt one of us.”
He looks up at everyone, Jonathan and Will looking oddly similarly out of place and Nancy with her eyes trained on his face as she listens. Max isn’t looking at him. Good , he thinks. Maybe that made her feel guilty.
“How would you feel if you knew firsthand El didn’t care about dying to save her friends, huh? Wouldn’t you be worried about her?” He directs this at Max specifically, but she doesn’t seem to notice. “You guys are treating her like some kind of machine, and she’s not a machine. I still have nightmares about that day all the time.”
The room stays silent, almost as though everyone is holding a breath and waiting for him to start yelling again, but he’s not going to. He doesn’t have any energy left to expound on this topic. If Max wants to keep making him the bad guy, then whatever. He has more important things to worry about.
“I just-” He starts and stops, wondering if this is the right thing to say. “I don’t want her to die looking for the flayed when they’ve obviously vanished off the face of the Earth, so we can we please just come up with another plan because I love her and I can’t lose her again.”
Now it’s almost as though all the air has actually been sucked out of the room. Maybe this wasn’t the right time to reveal the depth of his feelings, but Mike really didn’t know what else he could say that could possibly make them understand his position. Lucas’ hand on his shoulder squeezes for a quick second and then lightly taps him as Lucas moves his arm back.
Nancy shakes her head. “I get that you don’t want her to hurt herself, Mike, but she’s already in there. There’s not much else we can do.”
“What’s going on?”
Everyone whips around to face El coming out of her bedroom doorway. Holy shit, did she hear what he said? Holyshitholyshitholyshitholyshit-
“Nothing. Nothing!” He says quickly.
“Just… family discussion,” adds Lucas from behind him. Mike can feel the smirk in his voice without even having to look at him.
“Oh,” says El, and suddenly Mike really wants to hug her. But this isn’t the time. He looks away.
“I found him,” she continues.
“Found… who?” Nancy asks.
“Billy.”

You and Nancy sit in the waiting room of the police station while Hopper talks to Jonathan.
“Hey, thanks for uh…” Nancy swings her fist in a punching motion.
“No problem. I just couldn’t deal with him anymore” You reply.
Two police officers come walk through the waiting room and into Hopper’s office.
“Hey chief you’re gonna want to see this.” You overhear one policeman say. You watch as Hopper walks outside and goes to Jonathan’s car. You forgot that all the traps and weapons were still in the back of his car. You and Nancy exchange an “oh shit” look.
Hopper plops down the box right in front of you all. Joyce starts looking through it, “What is all this?”
“Why don’t you ask your son, it was in his car,” Hopper says.
Jonathan nervously looks at you and Nancy, as if asking for help.
“You won’t believe us if we told you.” You speak up.
“Try me,” Hop responds.
You three then try to tell them everything that happened. Barb going missing, Nancy seeing the monster and getting sucked up into a tree, you show them the picture of the monster.
“You say blood draws this thing?” Hopper asks.
“It’s just a theory.” Nancy explains.
The door to the office opens and in comes an angry mom and her son. You recognize the kid from Dustin’s class.
“She broke my arm with her mind! She’s bald. She’s a freak!” The kid goes on and on telling a story to one of the police officers. There’s only one person he could be talking about.
“Eleven,” you say. Hopper looks at you.
“You know who he’s talking about?” He asks.
“Yeah, my brother and his friends found him out in the woods one night. She can do stuff with her mind and she’s been saying she knows Will and knows where he is.” You say,
Hopper tells everyone they need to go and rushes everyone out to his car. He drives to the Wheeler’s house only to find it swarmed with white vans.
“Shit, shit shit!” Hoppers yells.
“What is going on?! My parents are in there!” Nancy shouts back.
Hopper proceeds to tell you about Hawkins lab, how they have this gate thing that is similar to what you and Jonathan saw in the tree, how Will could be hiding in there, how Eleven escaped from there, and how anyone who knows about this could be in danger.
“Jesus Christ.” You respond as you watch helicopters fly overhead.
“We need to find the boys and Eleven before they do. Do either one of you know where they might be?” Hopper asks you and Nancy. Nancy shakes her head no.
“I don’t know where they are, but I know how we can find out.” You respond.
*       *      *
The Byers’ house was filled with Christmas lights. You couldn’t believe it. Jonathan runs into Will’s room and grabs the walkie talkie. He hands it to Nancy.
Nancy pressed the button on the walkie talkie and began talking,
“Mike, I know you’re there Mike… I need you to answer Mike.”
No response. You motion for Nancy to hand over the walkie talkie.
“Boys, Dustin, it’s Y/N. I know you probably think this is a trick but it’s not. We need you to answer.”
No response. Hopper snatches the walkie talkie out of your hands.
“Listen kid this is the chief, if you’re there, pick up. We know you’re in trouble, we know about the girl. We can protect you, we can help you, but we need you to pick up.”
More silence. You sigh. Right when you are all about to give up, you hear the crackle of the walkie talkie.
“This is Mike. I copy.”
*     *     *
You, Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy all sit around the dining room table while you wait for the chief to return with the kids. The sound of his car rolling up catches your attention. You run out the door and go hug Dustin then smack him on the side of the head.
“Ow!”
“Stop getting yourself into trouble, that’s my job!” You say
You see Eleven standing behind Dustin.
“Oh, hi Eleven. It’s good to see you again. I like your, uh I like your dress.” You say, still unsure of how to communicate with this strange child.
*     *     *
“Eleven says Will is in the upside down, he’s hiding from something, a monster we call the Demogorgon” Mike begins to explain. “Ok so here is a tightrope and this is us, we are the acrobat. Now we can only walk on the tightrope from side to side. This is the flea, the flea can also go side to side, but it can also go underneath the rope. Which in this case is the upside down.”
“Ok so how do we get to the upside down?” You ask.
“There’s a gate. We think it’s at Hawkins Lab.” Lucas chimes in.
“I’ve seen it.” Hopper says. He goes in detail to describe what he saw in Hawkins lab. Joyce asks Eleven if she can try to reach Will. Eleven agrees. The group sets up everything she needs. You all sit around the table while a radio plays static. Blood starts to drip down Eleven’s nose. You hold your breath hoping she will find something. She opens her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I can’t find him.” She says.
Eleven goes to the bathroom while the group tries to come up with a plan. There’s shouting and arguing, you barely hear Eleven come back into the room.
“The bathtub” Eleven states.
“What?” Joyce asks.
“I can use the bathtub.” Eleven says.
Dustin calls Mr. Clarke to find out how much salt you all will need for this to work out. 1500 pounds of salt.
*       *      *
Everyone gets assigned a job. Dustin and Lucas are getting the kiddy pool set up in the school gym, Nancy and Mike are connecting to the hot water, Hopper and Jonathan are getting the salt, and you and Joyce get Eleven all ready. Once everything is all set up, Eleven gets ready to emerge into the bath.
“Do you think you can look for Barb too?” You ask Eleven. She nods yes.
After a while of sitting and waiting, the lights flicker off.
“Barb.” Eleven states. Nancy’s ears prick up. “Is she ok?” Nancy asks, concern in her voice.
“Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone, gone.” Eleven repeats over and over. You look over to Nancy with wide, tear filled eyes. She throws her hand over her mouth as she lets out a sob.
“Castle Byers….Will” Eleven pipes up again.
“Tell him, tell him I’m on my way! Tell him his mom is coming and to stay right there!’ Joyce says.
Shortly after, Eleven shakes in the water and quickly comes up, hugging onto Joyce for comfort. Hopper announces he’s going to go get Will and Joyce insists she comes with, leaving you, the boys, Eleven, Nancy, and Jonathan alone at the school. You look around for Nancy and Jonathan only to find that they have wandered out of the gym.
You stumble upon them sitting in the hallway, Jonathan has his arm wrapped around Nancy as she silently cries into his shoulder. They both looked up at you.
“Let’s go kill that son of a bitch.”
*       *      *
Before you go kill this “Demogorgon” or whatever it is, you go say bye to Dustin.
“Hey Dustin,” you call him over, “I’m about to go do some badass shit right now. I need you to stay here and to stay safe, got it?” He gives you the thumbs up.
“I love you, Dusty.” You say as you pull him in for a tight hug.
“Love you too, I can’t breathe.” You quickly let go of him and head out of the gym, giving Dustin one last wave.
*     *     *
The plan was to kill the Demogorgon or at least try to distract it while Hopper and Joyce went into the upside down to get Will. The Byers’ house was covered in traps and gasoline. You hammer nails into a bat while Jonathan and Nancy get the bear trap set up.
“Ok, remember, straight into Will’s room and don’t step on the trap,” Jonathan began, “then-“
“Wait for the yoyo to move,” Nancy cut in.
“Then we light this son of a bitch up.” You finish off.
Of course, the Demogorgon was attracted to blood and of course you couldn’t just do a small little prick, you had to slice your whole hand. Nancy started to count down.
“1….2….3!” You wince as the sharp knife cuts your hand. You all watch as blood drips on the floor. You grab the bandages and start wrapping your hand up, Jonathan and Nancy help each other get cleaned up. Someone starts banging on the door, startling everyone.
“Jonathan! Are you there man? It’s… it’s Steve!”
You turn your head to Nancy and Jonathan and mouth “what the fuck?” They both shrug. You go to answer the door.
“Henderson?” Steve asks, obviously surprised to see you there.
“Steve, you need to leave.” You start to close the door, but he puts his arm out to stop it.
“Y/N I messed up, I messed up, is Jonathan here?” He looks down at your bandaged hand.
“Hey, what happened to your hand?” He asks, concern in his voice.
“What? Oh nothing.”
“Did, did he do this to you?”
“No definitely not!” Steve barges his way in, pushing you to the side.
“Nancy?” Steve looks around, “What the hell is going on? What’s that smell? Is that gasoline?”
“Hey man you need to get out.” Jonathan says pushing him towards the door. Steve won’t budge.
“Steve please you need to leave.” You say, Nancy grabs the gun and points it at Steve.
“Steve, get out.”
“Woah woah woah wait WHAT?!” Steve starts yelling.
“Nancy put the gun down,” you say trying to get her to relax. She starts counting down from three. The lights start flickering. You and Jonathan look at each other with panicked eyes as you start trying to get Nancy’s attention.
“Nancy! The lights!” You shout. She looks around and points the gun down. You grab the bat, Jonathan grabs a crowbar, and Nancy holds onto her gun.
“Where is it?”
“Do you see it?”
“I can’t see anything!” You all start to shout.
“See what? What are you guys talking about?!” Steve yells.
Just then the ceiling caves in, the Demogorgon falls to the ground. It starts to stand up causing all of your heads to look up at it. Its mouth opens up as it roars.
“Shit, run!” You scream. Nancy and Jonathan take the lead down the hallway, you grab onto Steve’s hand and pull him with you.
“Jump!” You yell at Steve as you approach the bear trap. Once all of you are safely in Will’s room Jonathan slams the door.
You all wait for the yoyo to move.
“This is crazy, this is CRAZY, THIS IS CRAZY!” Steve starts yelling again.
“Steve! Calm down!” You say, knowing full well he won’t calm down as you, yourself isn’t even calm. The yoyo still hasn’t moved, you don’t hear anything. Jonathan slowly opens the door. You four make you way out of the room, Steve gripping onto your arm.
“Where’d it go?” You whisper.
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on!” Steve asks.
Nancy turns around, “It’s going to come back, you need to leave!” She tells him. He looks at you and you raise your eyebrows at him. He rushes out the door. As soon as he leaves the lights start to flicker, then all the lights go out.
“Can you guys see it?”
“I can’t see anything!”
You can hear it, but you can’t see it.
“Y/N! Behind you!” You hear Jonathan yell. You turn around and come face to face with it.
“Oh shit,” you say right before it tackles you to the ground. Its arm knocks the bat out of you hand and out of your reach. You start panicking. It opens its mouth and screams in your face, you can feel the hot breath on your face. You squeeze your eyes shut waiting for it to chomp down on you, but it never does. You open your eyes in time to see Steve hitting it with the bat, making it get off of you.
“Steve! Go towards the trap!” Nancy yells.
You try to catch your breath as you stand up.
“Y/N are you ok?” Nancy asks. You nod.
“It’s in the trap! It’s in the trap!” Steve yells to Jonathan. Jonathan flicks the lighter and throws it down, lighting the hallway on fire. You can hear the screeches of the Demogorgon and then you hear silence. Jonathan grabs the fire extinguisher and puts out the fire. Once the smoke is cleared you see the bear trap is empty except for some slimy, bubbly, goo that swarms the bear trap. You let out a deep breath you didn’t know you were holding in. Steve reaches out for your hand.
“Hey are you ok?” He asks.
“Um, yeah, I think so.” You say, unaware of why he was being so nice to you. You look down at your hand that Steve is still holding, he follows your gaze and quickly lets go.
“Good, good to hear,” He says. You notice the lightbulbs lighting one by one, down the hallway and to the front door.
“Where is it going?” Nancy asks.
“I don’t think that’s the Demogorgon,” Jonathan says, “Mom?” He says quietly.
You all stand around quite awkwardly, unsure of what to do next.
“Dustin! I have to go check on Dustin!” You say.
“I’ll give you a ride, Henderson.” Steve says. You look at him in disbelief. “Unless you want to walk?” He asks.
“Um no yeah I’ll take a ride.” You respond.
“Hey Y/N, will you make sure Mike is ok?” Nancy asks. You nod yes, as you hug Nancy and Jonathan goodbye, telling them to be safe.
As you follow Steve out the door and into his car, your stomach fills with butterflies. The first couple minutes of the car ride is filled with awkward silence.
“You gonna tell me where I’m going or am I just supposed to guess?” He asks, jokingly.
“Oh! Right, just head to the middle school please.” More silence.
Steve ends the silence once again. “Listen, Y/N, I’m really sorry about everything. About being an asshole, I really am sorry.”
“It’s ok…-“
“No, no it’s not ok. I lost my best friend because what, I wanted to be popular?”
You weren’t sure how to respond. After you didn’t respond, Steve turned on the radio, Your song by Elton John came on.
“Oh my god! Do you remember this song?” Steve excitedly asks.
Memories flooded back in your mind of you and Steve dancing around his pool during the hot summers while listening to this song, it was your guy’s go to song. It really was “your song.”
You giggle as you and Steve start to sing along. Soon the quietly singing turns into loud singing and laughing.
“I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND!”
“I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND! THAT I PUT DOWN IN WORDS!”
“How wonderful life is”
“Now you’re in the world!” When the song ends you, both erupt into laughter. The car pulls up to the middle school, there are ambulances and police cars.
“Oh my god...” You say are you rapidly unbuckle your seatbelt and open the car door. You run to a policeman, Steve following quickly behind you.
“I’m sorry miss, I can’t let anyone in.” He says not letting you past the barricade.
“Her brother’s in there, man, come on.” Steve says. The policeman sighs and lets you both in.
“Dustin?” You shout, “Dustin!”
“Y/N!” Dustin comes running out from behind an ambulance, tackling you into a hug.
“Why are you with Steve Harrington?” Dustin whispers.
“Honestly, I don’t even know.” You respond.

At the hospital, everyone waits in the waiting room for Will to wake up. The three boys are all sleeping on each other, Nancy and Jonathan sit together, and you and Steve are sitting next to each other.
“Hey, Henderson?” Steve says.
“Yeah?” You look up at him.
“I was wondering if, maybe after all this is over, you would want to go out to eat or something? You know to catch up and make up for lost time?”
“Sure, Harrington, I would like that.” You say, grinning like a doofus.
Jonathan comes in the waiting room and wakes up the three boys, “Hey guys, Will’s awake.”
They all jump out of their chairs and run to Will’s room. You pat Steve on the knee and get up to go see Will. You lean against the doorway as the boys talked to Will. Will looks up and sees you.
“Y/N!” You make your way over to hug him.
“It’s good to have you back Will.”

~November 14th, 1983~
You’re pacing around your room. Tonight is the night you and Steve are going to go out. You don’t know why you were so nervous, maybe because you thought it would be awkward, or because you didn’t know if it was actually a date or not, but you knew deep down you were just scared that all those buried feelings you had for him would all come back out.
Dustin walked by your room and noticed you pacing.
“You’re creating a draft.” He says. You roll your eyes at him. The doorbell rings.
“I’ll get it!” You hear your mom shout.
“No! No! I’ll get it!” You say pushing Dustin out of the way.
“Who’s here?” Dustin asks.
“No one, it’s no one!” You say rushing to get to the door. By the time you get there, Steve is already standing in your living room.
“Y/N! You didn’t tell me Steve was coming over! Steve you look so handsome! It’s been so long!” your mom says as she pulls him into a hug.
Steve looks at you and smiles. “I’m sorry.” You mouth to him. He waves it off.
Before your mom has a chance to say anything else you grab Steve’s hand and head towards the door.
“Ok, we gotta go, bye!” You slam the door shut.
“You’re mom’s the best, I think we should stay and talk to her!” Steve jokes as he makes his way to his car.
“Ha, ha, so funny.”
He opens the car door for you, and you get it. He walks around to the other side and gets in.
“Alright Harrington, where are we headed?” You ask, still unsure of where you are going.
“Remember that one spot we found when we were little, and it was like by a small pond and there was that gazebo?”
“Of course I remember.”
“Well I thought, we could stop and get some snacks and things, then go and have a little picnic there. I have blankets in the trunk and some pillows. It’ll be just like old times.”
You hum in agreement.
You’re first stop is at the store. Joyce is working.
“You can go ahead and pick out the snacks, I’m going to talk to Joyce.” You say to Steve. Steve nods then goes off to get the snacks.
“Hi Joyce!” You say.
“Y/N! It’s good to see you!” she pulls you into a hug.
“How is Will?” You ask.
“Oh he’s doing so great, it’s so great to have him back home.”
“I’m sure! And how are you and Jonathan?”
“Just great!” Steve comes up and puts all the snacks on the counter. Joyce rings you guys up. You start getting your wallet out.
“Oh no, I got it.” Steve says.
“No, no, no, I can pay.” You say.
“No, Y/N I’m paying.” Steve insists.
You say goodbye to Joyce, she looks to Steve then winks to you. You laugh and wave goodbye.
*    *    *
You and Steve set up the pillows and blankets and lay out all the food.
“You got gummy worms!” You say.
“I remembered they were your favorites.” Steve says. You grin at him.
You and Steve spend the night talking and laughing and catching up.
“Oh, I have a really good one, what is blue and doesn’t weight a lot?” You ask
Steve thinks for a little bit. “I don’t know, what?”
You start laughing before you even get the punchline out. “Light blue!” You manage to get out in between chuckles.
“Oh my god! That was terrible!” Steve says, while laughing. You look over at him.
“I really missed you, Steve.” He turns and looks at you.
“Oh, believe me, I’ve missed you like crazy. I’m glad we’re doing this.”
“Yeah. Me too.” You smile up at him.
*    *    *
Steve dropped you back off at your house later that night. When he pulled up to your driveway, he got out of the car and started to walk up to your front door.
“What are you doing?” You ask him.
“Well, I should say bye to your mom.”
“Oh no, no,-“ He cuts you off by letting himself into your house.
“Oh you guys are back!” Your mom was sitting on the couch with your cat, Mews. “How was your date?” She asked.
Your cheeks turned red. “It wasn’t a date mom.” You say.
“It wasn’t?” Steve asks.
“Oh was it?” You ask
“I thought it was.”
“So it was a date! What did you guys do?” Your mom chimes in. You fill her in on all the details.
“Well I should go, it was nice to see you again Mrs. Henderson.” Steve says as your mom pulls him in for another hug.
“You too dear, tell your mom I said hello!”
You walk Steve back to the door.
“Tonight was really fun, we should do it again sometime.” You say
“Yeah, yes! I would love that.” Steve says. You both stand there awkwardly, unaware if you should hug or just high five. Steve pulls you in for a hug and rests his chin on top of your head. It might have been the longest hug you’ve ever had. You both pull away.
“Well, I’ll see you around Henderson.” Steve says as he makes his way to his car.
“See you round Harrington.”

~December 24th. 1983~
Ever since that night, you and Steve hung out a couple more times, having movie nights or going out to eat. You were back to smiling at each other in the hallways. It’s definitely safe to say you were catching feelings for him, although you tried not to, you just couldn’t help it. You would say hi to Nancy and Jonathan in the hallways, and occasionally sit by them at lunch. It was winter break now and things were almost completely back to normal.
You and your mom were in the living room doing some last minute wrapping when the doorbell rang. You went to go answer it, only to see Jonathan.
“Oh, Jonathan, hi.” You say
“Hi, I was just on my way to pick up Will from the Christmas party and was wondering if you wanted to come too?” He asks.
“Oh, yeah! I have to get Dustin anyways.” You grab your coat and say bye to your mom.
You and Jonathan get in his car and make your way to the Wheeler’s house.
“So…you and Nancy?” You ask Jonathan.
“Me and Nancy?” He asks back.
“Aren’t you guys dating?” You ask.
“Oh, um, no she actually, she got back with Steve.” He says. Your heart sank.
“She got back with Steve? When?”
“Oh not too long ago, right before we left for winter break. I guess he’s a “changed man” or whatever.”  You couldn’t believe it, you could feel your heart breaking little by little.
You arrived at the Wheeler’s. You and Jonathan were greeted by Mrs. Wheeler and made your way to the basement.
“Gross, have you guys been farting down here all day or what?” You joke.
“It was Dustin!” Lucas says pointing at Dustin causing everyone to laugh.
“Alright Dustin and Will you guys ready to head out?” Jonathan asks.
They say yes and say goodbye to Lucas and Mike.
Nancy comes down the stairs just as you guys were about to leave.
“Jonathan wait! I have a present for you.” She hands him a present.
While Jonathan talks to Nancy, you and Dustin go say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler.
“Merry Christmas Mrs. Wheeler!” You and Dustin say.
“You too! Tell your mother Merry Christmas!” she says.
Mr. Wheeler is in the living room sitting in his recliner. You walk into the living room and you immediately regret it. Steve is sitting on the couch waiting for Nancy. You pretend not to see him as you say Merry Christmas to Mr. Wheeler. You turn to walk out of the room but catch Steve’s eye.
“Harrington.” You say coldly. Before he gets a chance to say anything, you walk out of the room.

Well, things were officially back to normal, or as normal as they could be, unfortunately they wouldn’t stay normal for long.

Well no one outside the kids has any friends and yet despite all they've been through they aren't particularly close? Jancy has no friends, Steve has no friends except the odd friendship with Dustin and Robin recently because Robin was brought into the upside down secret. Mrs Wheeler has friends but other than seeming happy to see Joyce every time they don't seem very close? Joyce not feeling the need to keep Mrs Wheeler informed seems odd, she as a mother would want that. Hopper has no friends.
i don’t really get this tbh: is it saying it makes sense to you for jancy to only have scenes with each other b/c they’re in a relationship? or is it that jonathan wouldn’t/shouldn’t have friends? can he interact with family, or? can nancy? i mean i know i sometimes get asks that seem to be more like wanting him to be friends with whomever from people who also seem to want jancy to break up, but for those where it isn’t that, the bigger point is just who have the characters been allowed to have scenes with. karen isn’t a main, first of all, but with the characters you’re mentioning, if you went through s2 and s3, they would have interacted with and had scenes with different characters on the show, which is good for maintaining character individuality.
it shouldn’t be that it’s either/or. although the problem of how jonathan has been written within jancy would prob both involve adjusting the balance a bit to make sure jonathan and nancy both had some other scenes with other characters (esp. family) and with each other, plus adjusting some things in the writing of the jancy scenes themselves to make jonathan more active and capable, which he kinda wasn’t depicted as sometimes, and that’s not the character in s1, imo. i prob also just don’t agree with the fear that if jonathan or nancy has a few scenes with other characters in addition to with each other, that it lessens jancy. that vaguely sounds to me like thinking jancy is really fragile or something.

prologue
“Son of a bitch… son of a bitch!” Dustin yelled as he ran into the living room, flipping up cushions on the other side of the couch that you were sitting on.
“Dustin, what the hell are you doing?” You groaned, pushing your glasses up on your nose with the base of your palm. You and your mom were watching the news, as another police chase had happened, following the same group of people. Yes, it was in another state, but it was still interesting to you.
“Another stupid penny…” Dustin grumbled as he threw the penny across the living room.
“Dusty, watch it! You almost hit Mews.” Mom said as your cat meowed in her arms.
“Can I please check under your cushions?” Dustin asked the two of you.
You looked at your position on the couch. You had been comfy sitting here for about a half hour and you did not want to move. Your legs were pulled up under you and you were leaning on an armrest.
“Uh, no, Dude. I’m sitting here.”
“(Y/N).” Your mom said.
“Mom!” You replied.
“Mom, please? It’s an emergency!”
“What qualifies as an emergency to you? Did your Lucas’s little sister glue his ass to his chair again?”
“C’mon, (Y/N)!”
You groaned and stood up as your mom did the same, and Dustin checked under the cushions and found what you assumed he had been looking for: two quarters. “Dude, if you just wanted quarters, you could have asked me. I’ve made a buttload of money teaching those little kids how to dance.”
“What? Really?!” Dustin smiled widely, showing off his new(ish) front teeth.
“I mean, pay me back eventually, but yeah.” You said, walking into your room. You heard him trailing behind you, which made you smile slightly. You took out your piggy bank--you and Nancy have had matching ones since you saved up to buy them in fourth grade (which was hard with no piggy bank to put your savings in)--and you poured the coins onto your bed. “Take the quarters. Just pay me back when you can.”
Dustin scrambled to grab as many quarters as he could. “Thanks, (Y/N), you’re the best! Love you!” He said hurriedly, then he rushed into his room. You heard him turn on his walkie-talkie and start talking to Lucas about the money. From this, you knew he was going straight to the arcade.
“(Y/N),” your mom said as you sat back down on the couch.
“Yeah?” You asked, chewing on your fingernail as you watched the television.
“Would you please drive Dusty to the arcade?”
You scowled, your eyes still trained on the tv. “Why? He has a bike.”
“Well yes, but I don’t want him biking home too late.”
You rolled your eyes and got up from the couch. “Fine. May as well stay out there instead of coming back then going out again. Hey, Little Dude,” you said, stopping Dustin who was running down the hall. “I’m driving you. Wait a minute while I get dress.”
Dustin groaned loudly and dramatically and fell back onto the couch as he waited for you. You changed into a pair of jeans and a yellow sweater. You pulled on your blue suede Adidas (popularized into women’s fashion by Billie Jean King in 1976), tucked your necklace from Steve under your sweater, and tied your hair up in a scrunchie.
“(Y/N)!! It’s been more than a minute! Come on!” Dustin yelled from outside your door. You laughed, grabbed your keys, and left your room. Dustin held up your cross-body bag for you, you took it, and he said, “Wow, you’re welcome.”
You laughed. “And you’re welcome for driving you to and from the arcade today.”
Dustin grinned widely as the two of you got into the car. “(Y/N), do you love me?” He asked sweetly.
You rolled your eyes. “What else do you want?”
“Can you drive Mike and maybe Will home today?”
You laughed. “You know I usually take home Mike. And yeah, sure, I’ll bring Will home, too.”
Dustin cheered and punched the air. “Thanks, (Y/N)!”
You huffed and pulled into the arcade parking lot. “No prob, Little Dude. Now, uh, remember:”
Dustin rolled his eyes as he spoke the next few words with you in unison. “Don’t talk to anyone creepy, especially that dude Keith. Don’t die or let any of your friends die. I love you, Little Dude.”
You laughed, knowing he had heard your spiel one too many times. “Ciao, Kid.” You watched as Dustin excitedly joined his friends in the arcade, and you started your car back up and drove to the movie theater, which was a few blocks away. Seeing the new movie, Terminator, was playing, you bought yourself a ticket and wasted time--okay, not wasted, Terminator was a fucking good movie--while waiting to pick up Dustin.
The next morning, you got ready for school. Dustin was talking the entire ride to the Byers’ house, and to the Wheelers’ house, and home, about somebody named MadMax who had beaten his score on… PacMan? No… Thayer’s Quest? No, it was Dig Dug. Yeah, Dig Dug. Anyway, you didn’t really care about the conversation, since you knew Dustin would find a way to somehow, someday, beat that MadMax. Even if it meant helping him yourself.
You pulled up to school, sitting in your car for a few minutes, making sure you had everything with you. You picked a piece of lint off your stripey sweater, one that Nancy had given you when she outgrew it (somehow, you managed to fit into it years after she gave it to you). You looked over at the car next to you and saw a dude smoking in his car. You scowled, hating smoking because it reminded you of your father. You got out of your car and immediately his eyes trained themselves on… your fucking chest. Really, dude?
“Hey, you know smoking isn’t allowed on campus, right?” You said to him once he took notice of you.
The dude smirked and let out a puff of smoke before flicking his cigarette onto the ground. “Sorry, Sweet Pea. I’m new in town. Don’t really know the ropes for your dumbass school yet. Maybe you can teach me?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
You scoffed. “You’re pretty cocky. I’m sure they’ll find someone to show you around. But…” You paused and sighed. “If they don’t, come find me at lunch. I usually sit near the window.”
He chucked. “Thanks, Sweet Pea.”
You scrunched up your nose as you walked away. “Don’t call me Sweet Pea,” you said under your breath.
You quietly cursed under your breath as the guy from the morning walked up to you while you were at your locker getting your lunch.
“So listen, Sweet Pea-”
“Please don’t call me that.” You said with a sarcastic smile, but he just kept talking.
“After school today you’re gonna tell me all the shit that I should know about your school. How’s 7:30?”
“I can’t, I go straight from school to dance. I don’t get off until 6:30 each night.”
He chucked and leaned in. “I don’t think you heard me. 7:30. I’ll pick you up.”
“Like a date?” You asked unenthusiastically. He just smirked. You hung your head down and took a breath, before looking back up at him with a fake ass smile. “7:30. Here’s my address.” You said, before writing your address on the back of his hand. “Don’t be late.” You said, then turning around, your whipping around your face, and heading to the cafeteria.
You knew it was stupid to say yes. You knew it was a bad idea. And yet…
It would get your mind off Steve.
At least for a bit.
After lunch, you, Nancy, and Jonathan exited the cafeteria, only to be greeted with none other than Tina Cline handing out flyers for her Halloween party. She handed Nancy and you one, and you immediately crumpled it up and threw it at your feet, kicking it along the linoleum floor as Nancy asked Tina for two more.
“You two are going to this!” Nancy said, before pushing the two flyers into your and Jonathan’s chests. You started to crumple yours up again, but Nancy shot you her famous “don’t-fucking-do-it-or-I’ll-crazy-murder-you” look. You smiled sheepishly and flattened it out against the book you were holding.
“‘Come and get sheet-faced.’ No, I’m not going.” Jonathan said, laughing.
“No, I can’t let the two of you sit home alone all Halloween. That’s just not acceptable!”
“Well, you can relax. We won’t be alone,” you said, pushing your glasses up your nose. “We’re going with the kids while they trick-or-treat.”
“All night?” Nancy asked.
Jonathan nodded. “Yeah…?”
“No, no way. You two are gonna be home by 8:00, Jonathan, you’re going to be listening to the Talking Heads and reading Vonnegut or something. (Y/N), you’re going to be watching some cheesy horror movie, eating ice cream out of its container and clutching your cat all night.”
Jonathan shrugged. “Sounds like a night night.” You laughed and agreed.
“Guys! Just come! I mean, who knows? You might even, like, meet someone.” Nancy said, opening her locker. Just then, Steve rounded the corner and picked up Nancy, making her shriek/squeal/make some weird, high-pitched noise that made you and Jonathan look at each other uncomfortably.
Steve set Nancy down, laughing, and Nancy hit his arm. “Oh, my God! Take those stupid things off.” She said, referencing his sunglasses.
He kept laughing and hugged her close to him, saying, “I missed you.”
“It’s been, like, an hour!” Nancy laughed.
“Tell me about it.” Steve said before pulling Nancy in for a kiss.
When they kept kissing, you turned to Jonathan and said, “So… how about the weather? Interesting, isnt’t it?” Which made Jonathan laugh and the two who were kissing separate. “C’mon.” You mumbled to Jonathan. The two of you walked down the hall together, leaving Nancy and Steve alone.
“I’m sorry you had to see that.” You said to him. You were the only one who knew about his huge crush on Nancy.
He sighed. “It’s fine. I… it just sucks, you know?” You nodded. “You’re lucky you don’t have to deal with that.”
You noticed the two of you were about to walk by Mrs. Armstrong’s history class, and you knew she had the next period free and wouldn’t be in her classroom. You tapped Jonathan on his shoulder and pulled him into the classroom.
“Okay, I might be absolutely insane for telling you this, but I’m gonna tell you anyway.”
Jonathan furrowed his eyebrows in concern. “You okay?” He asked.
You took a deep breath. “Not exactly. See, I’ve kinda had a teensy-weensy crush on Steve for a little while now. Okay, not so teensy-weensy. More like hugesy-wugesy. And it hasn’t been for a little while. I’ve liked him since middle school. It’s just like… every time I see him, I feel lightheaded and I get butterflies in my stomach and I can’t form words properly and when I do I sound like an asshole and… and… and I’m in love with my best friend’s boyfriend.” You felt your face grow hot as you put your feelings for Steve into words
As you were saying this, Jonathan’s eyes widened. “Really? Oh… shit. Well, I, uh… I guess we’re in the same boat, then, huh? Except I have a crush on my best friend, and you have a crush on your best friend’s boyfriend… but, essentially, we’re in this together, huh?” He said with a sad smile.
You nodded. “Yeah. We’re in this together.”

The first day of school wasn’t as hard as Y/N thought it would be. Most of her classes she had with Nancy or Jonathan, even some with Steve. Always being with a familiar face helped her find a place to be in each classroom. Someone she could sit next to, who could help her figure out what was going on if she got lost in the lesson.
She even had them all to sit with at lunch, which she silently thanked whoever had made her schedule.
She wound up sitting next to Steve at lunch, across from Nancy as they all talked about plans. Y/N had to catch up on some assignments, making sure she knew what was going on in all her classes. When she mentioned that, they all agreed to help her study and make sure she knew what she had been missing.
Which is how the four teens formed a study group. Sort of. Mostly it was them making sure Y/N knew what she had missed in class, and joking around with each other. They would spend the days after school often at the Henderson house, going over notes and everything that had happened in classes for the day.
She surprisingly liked school a lot more in Hawkins than anywhere else.  It felt more like home, a place to actually be. At old schools Y/N had always felt like she was being forced to learn...stuck in the same place. In Hawkins, it felt laid back. She felt relaxed. She didn’t have to worry about private school uniforms or advanced Latin exams.  Or some stupid gossip going around.
And, best of all, Y/N didn’t have to worry about her parents.
For the first time since Y/N was a pre-teen, she felt normal. Not rushed. She didn’t feel like anything was expected of her, or like she was under pressure. She was able to laugh and run around and do what she wanted.
Today, Y/N was cleaning up her notebooks in the living room as her Aunt set the table for dinner. It was a Friday night, and Y/N had made it through her first week of school in Hawkins.
“Can you believe you just started here and now it’s already Christmas break?” her Aunt called from her spot in front of the stove.
Y/N nodded, standing up as she put her books back in her backpack. Brushing her hair out of her face, she smiled, “Yeah, it’s weird how fast time’s gone by. Still feels like I just got here, though.”
“Well, you did just get here. I’m sorry I didn’t know you would be here so soon, Y/N. I didn’t get you any presents for Christmas. I’ll have to go shopping soon. Maybe you and I can go to the mall this week? You can point out a few things you might like. Heck, we can even drag Dustin along with us. Make it a family day trip.” Claudia spoke with such a smile on her face. Y/N smiled too, at the caring nature of her aunt. And how she seemed so excited to have Y/N here.
“Aunt Claudia, you don’t have to get me anything.” she stood up from the living room floor and walked into the kitchen to give her aunt a hand, pouring glasses of water for everyone. “Seriously, it’s already more than enough that you’re letting me stay here. I don’t need any presents.”
“Nonsense, dear. You’re family. You should get presents on Christmas.” Claudia spoke, wrapping an arm around her niece in a tight hug.
Y/N hugged her back, “Thanks for everything.” she spoke softly.
“Family should always be there for family.” Claudia explained, smoothing Y/N’s hair out of her face with a soft motherly smile before turning back to the stove.
Y/N felt her chest swell with emotion at her aunts words. She had to blink her eyes and turn away before her aunt might catch her crying. She hadn’t felt this much like a family in so long. It had been many years since the last family Christmas. She could barely remember what her last family meal had looked like, let alone a family outing. Everything in her home felt so stuffy.
Y/N hadn’t bothered to say goodbye to her parents before she left. If that was any indication of how close she had been to them.
Then again, they hadn’t exactly called since she’d gotten here, had she?
No, Y/N and her parents were, at best, acquaintances.  Maybe even awkward family friends. It had happened to be like that for a while, even before Y/N got into all that trouble with school. Trouble which she was grateful her aunt and cousin hadn’t asked about or even told any of their friends about. Y/N still wasn’t ready to go into that detail with everyone else.
At her last school, Y/N had gotten caught in a group of bad people. They were the tough guys, stealing tests and causing problems. When she and the group of friends had butted heads, things went south fast. Suddenly Y/N was out of the group and the rumours she’d once helped create were coming back to bite her in the ass. Suddenly she was being called names and being framed for things she didn’t do.
The last straw had been when Y/N had been accused of sleeping with the headmaster of the school. While it wasn’t true, no one believed her after everything else had been said. Not even her own parents had believed her. Which is why she had wound up here, in Hawkins, while her parents struggled somewhere in Europe to fix their marriage.
Y/N was taken from her thoughts when her aunt called for Dustin to come down the stairs. She caught her aunt giving her a raised eyebrow look, but Claudia didn’t say anything. Instead she just patted Y/N’s shoulder as she passed by to grab Tews food from the kitchen cabinet.
Y/N sighed heavily to herself, brushing a hand through her curls as she took a seat in her chair at the table. She toyed with the napkin under her silverware as she listened to the sounds in the kitchen. Her aunt was humming and cooing softly at the kitten by her feet, while Dustin was clamoring down the stairs, racing to sit at the table.
His had fell off his head as he bounced into his seat beside Y/N. “Shit.” Dustin exclaimed, reaching to the floor to grab his hat.
“Language, Dustin.” Claudia reprimanded as she took her eyes off the kitten who was finally eating. She brushed her hands off on her pants before turning to wash them in the kitchen sink. As she did, she turned her gaze back to Dustin, “Hats off at the table.”
“Yes mom.” Dustin groaned in reply, slowly taking his hat off and placing it on the back of his chair.
Y/N giggled. “If you’d left it on the floor, she wouldn’t have told you that.”
Dustin rolled his eyes, turning to his cousin. “And let Tews step all over it? No thanks, he already got my last hat.” Dustin began gathering food from the table and putting helpings onto his plates. “Mom, you remember that we’re having everyone over tomorrow night for a sleepover. It’s my turn to host DnD night, and everyone likes playing with Tews too.”
Dustin’s mother had just sat at the table and her eyes widened at his words.
Dustin exclaimed, in her silence, “You forgot?!” He grabbed his curls in his hands, sighing. “Mom, what am I supposed to do?”
“Sorry, sweetheart. I have to work late. I’ll leave Y/N instructions for food and she can watch you until I get home. But everyone sleeps down in the living room. No funny business.” Claudia explained, pointing a finger at her son.
“Funny business? Ew. Gross. No. We’re just playing a game.” Dustin shook his head, shuddering at the thought as he stuffed his face with mashed potatoes.
Y/N giggled, biting her lip as she shook her head at her cousin.
“You can watch them, right Y/N?” Claudia turned to look at Y/N with a small smile, practically pleading with her niece.
Y/N waved her hand and shrugged. “No worries, Aunt C. I got ‘em under control. The munchkins love me.”
“Munchkins?” Dustin asked, offended.
“You’re younger than me, aren’t you, munchkin?” Y/N pointed out with a chuckle.
“Yeah, sure, but munchkin?”
“Deal with it, munchkin.” Y/N ruffled his hair and then turned back to her own dinner. She could sense Dustin rolling his eyes, but her younger cousin didn’t bother making another comment.
Tumblr media
Y/N was getting ready for everyone to come over the next day. Aunt Claudia had left strict instructions that Y/N was supposed to make everyone dinner, not order pizza. “Those boys eat too much pizza. Make them something nice. Cook books are in the kitchen.” she’d said when she was leaving for work that morning.
Which is why Y/N had borrowed Dustin’s bike to go to the grocery store and pick up a few things. She was going to make a pasta and some honey roasted carrots for dinner. It was one of her personal favorites one of the maid’s she’d had growing up had made often.
Dustin had been running around getting set up for the night. He grabbed the extra pillows and blankets and placed them on the floor by the couch, and then he was working on finding some videos to put on as well. He had a whole pile of them placed by the television and then he went back up to his room, telling Y/N that he was going to be calling his friends on the walkie to see if there was anything they needed for the night.
“Make sure to tell them I’m cooking for them, so their asses better be hungry!” Y/N called after him.
“Yeah, I’ll tell them to bring their own food in case you burn this.”
“Hey!” Y/N called after him. “I’ll never make you pancakes again with that attitude.”
Footsteps were racing and then Y/N saw Dustin halfway down the stairs. “No, c’mon Y/N. Yours are the best!”
“You have such little faith in my dinner cooking abilities.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Maybe I’ll just let you starve.”
“What about everyone else?”
“I didn’t say I’d let everyone starve. Just you, munchkin.”
“What? That’s so not fair Y/N!”
“Life isn’t fair, munchkin.”
“But, but, but Y/N” Dustin’s voice was getting higher as he whined.
“I’ll tell you what, you do cleanup duty and you can eat some food. And I’ll even make everyone pancakes tomorrow morning.”
“Deal! I swear, I’m sorry.” Dustin exclaimed, bouncing down to the kitchen to give Y/N a hug.
“Aw, cool beans, Dusty. I was gonna give you food anyway, but now that you’ll clean you can get an extra helping.” Y/N laughed, musing his hair as she spoke and hugged him back.
“Wait what?” Dustin pulled back from her grasp and looked at her confused. “Are you serious?”
“Yup. Super serious.” Y/N smirked and then turned back to the stove.
Dustin muttered something that Y/N didn’t hear as he bounded back up the stairs. Y/N only laughed to herself as she continued to move around the kitchen and get food ready. She also put a couple of snacks in different bowls, putting them in the living room for when everyone else showed up.
It was only an hour later when Chief Hopper showed up with Jane and Maxine. He came in the house after Y/N opened the door. She offered him something to drink, but he said he had to go back to work. Then he ruffled Jane’s brown hair and waved goodbye as he left the house.
“Can you guys help me set the dining room table?” Y/N asked.
Jane nodded her head and she went into the kitchen with Max following along. Jane turned to look at Y/N and paused.
“Plates are in that cabinet above the blender. Silverware in the drawer below, and then cups are in the cabinet to the left of the stove.” Y/N explained, pointing out where everything was as she went back to putting the vegetables in the oven.
Sooner than she expected, the door opened and Lucas walked in with Mike behind him. They were followed closely by Will, Jonathan, and Nancy.
“Dustin, everyone’s here.” Y/N called, turning the stovetop off and straining the water from the pasta over the sink.
“No, Steve’s not here yet.” Nancy commented, munching on a pretzel from one of the bowls Y/N had put out earlier.
“Steve’s coming?” Y/N asked, hoping her voice didn’t sound overly excited, or even nervous about the prospect of seeing Steve. They were becoming friends, actual friends, but it didn’t help the butterflies in Y/N’s stomach when she thought of him.
“Yeah, he called this morning. Good thing too, cause he totally thought it was still at Nancy’s. He had no idea that the Wheeler parents have an annual date night with the Sinclair’s.” Jonathan spoke up with a shrug.
“Ew, don’t remind me. Why do you think we left home so early?” Nancy giggled, nudging Jonathan’s shoulder.
“Come on, that sounds fun. A double date night with friends.” Y/N replied, putting the pasta into a big bowl.
“Maybe you and Steve should go out with Jonathan and Nancy sometime, then.” Max said from the dining room where all the kids were currently sitting, except Dustin who was still upstairs.
“Steve and who should what?”
Y/N turned around at his voice. She hadn’t expected him to just come right in, even though she figured this was like a second home to him as well. But even if he had just welcomed himself into the Henderson home, Y/N hadn’t expected him to walk in right then and there.
“Max just said that you and Y/N should double with Nance and Jonathan.” Will explained, never looking up from the cards in his hand.
Y/N felt the blush on her face, her cheeks heating up to what she could only assume was a deep deep shade of red.
Dustin finally made his appearance, jumping from the bottom step with a smile on his face, oblivious to what everyone else was feeling in the moment as he spoke up, “Y/N, this smells so good. I’m starved. When did everyone get here? Shit, I must have fallen asleep. Why is everyone staring at Y/N and Steve? What did I miss?” Dustin finally caught on and looked around, noticing everyones eyes were either trained on Y/N’s bright red face, or Steve’s confused looking face.
“Y/N and Steve are dating.” Jane answered, speaking for what almost felt like the first time since Y/N had known her. “Can we eat now? Dustin’s right, the food smells good.”

You and Dustin pull up at Mike’s house just as Lucas was getting off his bike. All three of you are greeted by Mrs. Wheeler. She tells you that Mike is in the basement. As you all start walking down the stairs you notice a bald girl sitting on the couch. You lean over and whisper into Dustin’s ear, “who’s the bald girl?”
“Oh Eleven this is Y/N, Y/N this is Eleven.” Dustin introduces you two. The girl named Eleven looks terrified.
“Um hey, what’s up?” You greet her. Eleven just looks at you. You smile at her then got to say hi to Mike. All five of you gather around a table. The boys each dump out their backpacks. Lucas has “weapons,” if you count a wrist rocket as a weapon. Dustin empties his backpack and all kinds of snacks fell out. You couldn’t help but laugh.
“Ha! Nice dude,” he looks up at you and smiles, you give him a fist bump.
Lucas and Mike look at him like he’s crazy.
“We’re going to need food for our travels, why do we even need weapons anyways, we have her!” Dustin points at Eleven. Now you were just flat out confused.
“She shut ONE door.” Lucas argues.
“With her mind.” Dustin said.
“I’m sorry what?” You could not believe what you were hearing; Weapons? Closing doors with minds? “travels?” The boys then go into detail telling you everything. They found eleven while out searching for Will, found out she had powers, and how she knew where Will was. Although you were still fairly confused, you went along with their plans.
“Ok so we all need to meet back here at 3:15 to begin Operation Mirkwood.” Mike explains.
“Yikes, sorry boys I’m going to have to take a raincheck, I have rehearsal after school.” You tell them.
“So what? Just skip it. This is important,” Dustin says looking up at you with pleading eyes.
“I can’t ‘just skip it,’ it’s the very first rehearsal.” You couldn’t miss the first rehearsal.
“Pull the ‘Will’s like a brother to me’ card. That’ll get you out of it.” Lucas suggests.
You didn’t like to lie to your director but the boys seemed to really want you there. You cautiously agree and look down at your watch.
“Shoot! We’re going to be late, we gotta go!” You tell the boys. They rapidly gather up all their things.
You all say bye to Eleven and hurry out the door.

Barb wasn’t in any of her classes today. Nancy was asking around school if anyone had seen her, but no one has. You were getting a bad feeling about this.
At lunch, since Barb wasn’t there, you were stuck sitting with Nancy, Steve, Tommy, and Carol.
“Hey Tommy, did you see Barb when you left last night?” Nancy asks. He said he had absolutely no idea what she was talking about.
“She was probably tired of listening to all the moaning last night.” To which then Carol and Tommy proceed to make sex noises loud enough for the whole cafeteria to hear. Nancy’s face turn red and she was avoiding eye contact with you.
“You know maybe if you guys wouldn’t have left her so you guys could go fuck, she would be here.” You knew if was a wise choice of words but you were so tired and fed up with all of them. And with that, you get up and leave the cafeteria to go talk to your theatre director.
Lucas was right, pulling the ‘Will was like a brother to me’ card gave you the whole rest of the week off from rehearsal. On the way out of the classroom you run into a theatre friend, Robin Buckley. Robin tells you she’s sorry about Will insists you guys hang out soon so you could get your mind off of everything. You agree and went on your way.

After school, while heading to your car, you notice Steve, Nancy, Tommy and Carol, swarming around Jonathan, yelling at him for something. You get there just in time to see Steve drop Jonathan’s camera.
“Steve, what the hell!” You give him a hard shove to the chest
“Stay out of this Henderson.” Steve says coldly as he, Tommy, and Carol start to walk away. Nancy bends over and picks up ripped pieces of a photograph and runs to catch up with the rest of the group. You bend down to help Jonathan pick up the rest of the photographs.
“Jesus, they are such assholes.” You mutter as you give Jonathan the rest of his photos back.
He gives you a quiet thank you, and runs off.
You look down at your watch and realize it was already 3:10. You were supposed to meet the boys at 3:15, you run to your car and shoot out of the parking lot.

The five of you trail behind Eleven as she leads you to where Will is. You all stop at Will’s house.
“Here.” Eleven states.
“Oh, no sweetheart this is Will’s house…where he lives?” You try to explain it to her.
“Hiding.” Eleven states again. You look up at the three boys who seem to be just as confused as you are.
“I told you she was lying!” Lucas says to Mike, who only argued back.
You could hear the sounds of sirens approaching.
“Guys…guys!” Dustin yells. All attention was now on the sirens approaching. Police cars and ambulances race by.
Simultaneously , the five of you glance at each other.
“Will.”
You all race towards the sirens and arrive at the quarry. You all peek your heads around an ambulance as you watch paramedics pull something out of the water and onto the stretcher. When you see what it it, your heart sinks. On the stretcher laid the body of Will Byers.
“No, no, no.” You can feel your eyes fill with tears.
“It’s him, it’s really Will.” Lucas says.
You wrap your arms around Dustin and Lucas. Mike starts yelling at Eleven.
“You said he was alive! Why’d you lie?!”
“Mike.” You try to calm him down.
“Huh? Why’d you lie?” Mike keeps pressing the question. Eleven starts stuttering trying to find the words to form a sentence. Mike scoffs and walks away.
You can’t believe what’s happening, and you had no idea what was yet ahead.

~November 9th, 1983~
The next day at school you can’t focus on anything. You just keep thinking about Will. It’s not until 3rd period when you notice Barb is still not at school.
After 3rd period you find Nancy and pull her aside.
“It’s not like Barb to just run away and not tell anyone. Something bad happened to her, I know it.” You tell Nancy.
“Y/N, I need to tell you something and it’s going to sound crazy”
“Yeah ok, I’m all ears.”
“Yesterday, I went to Steve’s house, to see if I could figure out where Barb went, and I saw something.” Nancy trails off.
“Like what? A deer?”
“No, like, like, I don’t know! It looked like some kind of monster.”
“A monster?” Ok now you were starting to think she was crazy.
“It walked on two legs and it didn’t have a face.” Nancy finishes.
“Didn’t have a face? Nancy this is started to sound like something from one of Dustin and Mike’s games.” You could not believe what she was telling you.
“Y/N I’m serious. I- I just know whatever it was, it wasn’t human.” Nancy looks at you with big pleading eyes, almost begging you to believe her. You are about to respond when the bell rings. You give Nancy a small glance and you go to your next class.
 *                     *                     *
As you start heading out of school, Nancy and Jonathan pull you into the photo developing room.
“Woah hello! What’s…uh what’s going on?” You question, surprised to see the two of them together.
“We might have discovered something.” Nancy says confidentially.
You all stand over the tub while the picture develops. In the picture you an barely make out what looks to be -and you can’t believe you’re thinking this- a monster.
“What the fuck is that thing.” You ask.
“That’s it, that’s what I saw!” Nancy announces.
“My mom, I thought she was crazy, she said it wasn’t Will’s body, that he’s still alive.” Jonathan adds.
“And if Will’s alive then-”
“Barb.”

I don’t think production was hiding Peter with a code name. Peter’s og name was actually Ashe but they changed it probably after Jamie was cast. ST doesn’t rlly do code names, unless you count them changing the main characters’ names in audition sides so actors won’t know who the character they’re auditioning for is talking to. A lot of ppl think ST uses code names bc in auditions for Kali, she was called Roman. But Roman wasn’t a code name, it was actually the name of the character at one point. The Duffer’s first draft of Kali was a male # in his 30s. But they couldn’t find anyone, so they opened the casting to women and younger actors. Then Linnea was cast, and they changed Roman’s name to Kali.
Idk why exactly Ashe was changed to Peter tho. Could be they wanted to change it to better fit the character. (Incoming etymology lesson!) The name Ashe has a few diff meanings: in western culture it comes from the Old English word æsc, which means ash tree. The ash tree has always held spiritual and religious connotation to several European cultures. Bark from ash trees would often be burned to ward off evil spirits, and some believed placing its leaves near your ear could encourage prophetic dreams. In African culture, Ashe comes from the Yoruban word àṣẹ, which means life force/life energy, and also the power to create that which you speak. So 001 having the name Ashe would’ve maybe indicated that he himself held ultimate power, could give others dreams (in this case memories), and had connection to “evil spirits”. Which is close but not entirely accurate to his character, as Vecna is the one who holds all the power, and Peter is most likely being used as a glorified vessel. Meanwhile the name Peter comes from the Greek word petra, which means stone or rock. In the Bible, Jesus’ gave his closest disciple, Simon, the name Peter, since he would be the rock upon which he would build his church. Peter’s last name, Ballard, comes from Middle English word ball, which can refer to a ball or an eye or someone’s head. In this case, ball combined with suffix -ard translates to bald head. So the name Peter could refer to the fact that he is the foundation upon which Vecna builds his power (as his vessel) and Ballard could refer to the fact that he is a # and they have shaved heads (even tho I don’t actually think Peter had a shaved head in flashback). Shaved heads are also associated with trauma, brutality, and loss of individuality, which I think also can apply to Peter. Maybe they originally had a diff plan for “Ashe” and when they changed his character, they changed his name too to better reflect who he was. I don’t know how much ST writers rely on etymology to choose character names, but most of them do fit well with the characters. Jonathan means god has given/gift from god (Jonathan is Joyce’s best gift since he is her rock, and also you could say he gave Nancy the gift of self-actualization and true love), William can mean desire for protection (all he wants is for UD to leave him alone), Joyce means lord (she’s always right), etc. Just smth to think about.
Oh whoa interesting etymology lesson! Some of the Ashe stuff esp is cool with how they might have been thinking of the character, but yeah I wonder if they really go far into etymology with the names, even if there are some nice connections. Maybe they just thought Peter sounded ordinary or something. I agree Ashe was prob less a code name and more just that they decided to change the name for some reason
