Star Trek Picard: S2E4 Reactions (spoilers!)
ngl i had a bad mental health day and watched this on my phone but it was still really really good
it's the ✨Seven putting a hand on Raffi's shoulder whenever they move✨ for me 😩
heavy metal guy being a puppy dog and respectful... love that for him
also say what you want but... he has a dwarven beard??? 🧐
Raffi fiddling with her necklace...
"We should have waited in the other future before jumping back in time" same Raffi bestie i was literally thinking this (and i wrote a fix it fic for you about it 🤠👍)
remember when the fandom freaked out over Saffi's first hand hold. now we have another one and it's so tender and sweet and i'm sorry i just need a moment
i really, really, really like this borg queen. i feel like of all the plot lines this episode i love borg queen and agnes' the most (and that's saying a lot as your local Saffi trash)
She and Agnes play off so well against each other and it's so intriguing seeing them interact and share how similar they are in their loneliness and isolation. It's so amazing
TNG theme playing when Picard beamed down to 10 Forward ARE YOU KIDDING ME OMFG I AM IN TEARS
THIS GUINAN SLAPS. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. I LOVE HER. OH MY GOD.
The way I know it's Sir PatStew shoehorning all these damn pitbulls in these episodes
and i love that for him. pitbull love forever
Okay but? I really, really, really like this Guinan as well. The new actors they brought in to play old characters mesh so well with the story and the tone and the universe and it's so amazing to see
Guinan being more jaded, angry, sarcastic... it's a yes for me, because of course she would be in 2024 in the USA
Also Guinan is TEMPTING me to get red highlights. help
Guinan's *cocks gun* is so sexy of her, no i will not elaborate
NOT CRYSTAL BALL RIOS 😭 star trek picard is a comedy actually
Seven is me whenever i see karens around serving staff lmao "we're just going to back off from your personal space and you're doing a wonderful job 🤠👍"
Also. Seven respecting and thanking the police/law enforcement while Raffi and Rios are fighting against them, whereas in the future Seven is bitter at Starfleet and lowkey ignores them as a Ranger, whereas Raffi and Rios are in Starfleet and are totally subscribed to their ideals and beliefs. Interesting
Raffi's "I hate everything". Her body language in this. The way she's all bristly.
Also, someone gif this. Please gif this and send me the link and I will reblog it forever and ever
Raffi's "I hate this" vs Seven's "AND YOU HIDE IT SO WELL! <3" saffi is a comedic duo actually
not to gloss over the biggest Saffi scene in this episode but the way the two of them interact in the aftermath of grief is something that was really difficult for me to watch because *redacted trauma* so all i'm going to say is
it was very, very well acted and so realistically written, so kudos to everyone who made this scene. and i'm very glad that they didn't make the characters forget Elnor's death in like 2 seconds.
Well, Picard, Agnes and Rios lowkey did so that's a 0/10 for me
if/when i feel a bit better about it i'll definitely try to break this scene down because it was just. immaculate representation on their part
seven DRIVING LIKE THAT holy fucking shit
not her calling that car an antique 😭 y'all know she only knows how to drive because tom paris made them all drive around in the holodeck
Somehow this feels more violent than those bridge scenes where they're hit and everyone has to lurch in the same direction
"What does yellow light mean" "go faster" 🤡when i tell y'all they're comedy queens...
also ew ford product placement
"the cornerstone of every-" y'all know jurati was gonna say "relationship" before she was cut off 👀
once again, i am so intrigued by borg queen/jurati's interactions. i know they paired everyone off to film separately (because of covid?) and this is such a well thought out pair/plot line. not even ship wise but like, their dynamics and back and forth
this borg queen's gentleness in luring agnes to her and promising her what she needs... oh my god. it's just so amazing
Guinan hearing Picard's name and going "shit" like mood lmao
also that kid is so scary... never again please 😭
L.......LARIS????
jurati knowing to limit the borg queen's access and ignoring her and walking away... thank you jesus
that lady in red who was reading lowkey reminded me of Kes
Q?????????
don't tell me Q is the jeff bezos of this fictional earth i will cry
Also Q losing his power... holy shit. Holy fucking shit

Lovely Tag officer Thanisson
Tumblr media
A - Affection [How affectionate are they with you?]
He is affectionate once the doors to your quarters close, you barely even look up at each other during the day due to first order regulations but he makes uo for it and cuddles you close the moment the door closes and he won't let you go till your back to work the next day.
B - Butter [How much do they coddle you, and how?]
He does his best to coddle you, he would always tell you the full truth about something to protect you, you both grew up in the first orders training programs so he couldn't hide you from some things but he does his best not to shield you from unpleasant things he knows might upset you.
C - Confide [How easily do they confide to you?]
He is an open book with you and a bank vault to the rest of the world, he has told you everything, his training, what he remembers about his home world and his family, and even little things like secrets about where he takes secret breaks at work, he'll tell you anything you ask.
D - Defensive [How protective are they over you?]
He can be very protective, on shore leave he barely let's you out of his sight as he knows the sorts of things people would trade and do for a patoxin girl so he makes sure to keep you safe and sound as much as possible.
E - Exhausted [How do they take care of you when you're tired or feeling low?]
He can sense your feeling low, or had a bad day at work the moment you step in the door, he'll fix you a hot cup of relan tea and run you a nice bubble bath, then he'll sit and massage your back and braid your hair for you as you explain the ins and outs of your day, unless you don't want to talk then he'll tell you a funny story about his day.
F - Fluffy [How sappily sweet can they get?]
It's not to much a sappy sweetness all though he can be sometimes when he wants to treat you special. It's more a cute sweetness like when you aww at a puppy growling to protect something but instead of a puppy it's thanisson and it's equally adorable.
G - Game [How much do they play around, and are they a tease?]
He doesn't much like to tease unless it's tickles because if you start that... You start a war. And you must be prepared for that.
H - Happy [What's their favourite thing to do with you, that makes them happy?]
He loves taking a bath with you, not in a Sexual way, he just likes to lay in the water with you and wash your hair for you while you lay on his chest and he likes to braid your hair for you even though you should do it he still likes to help you.
I - Initiate [Do they make the first move?]
Not really he likes to wait for you
J - Jealousy [How jealous can they get and how do they show it?]
He can get very very jealous! A trooper once patted you in the butt an by God he was so angry he looked like he could have manifested a lightsaber and cut his arm off.
L - Love [How do they react to you giving them affection?]
He blushes and gives you equal if not more back, so if you kiss his nose he'll kiss your nose or your lips, you kiss his hand he'll kiss your hand or you head.
M - Married [What's it like to be married to them?]
Magical, he treats you like a princess and it was fun to see how long it would take your freinds to realize you got married in shore leave
N - Newborn [How are they with having kids, and how would they be as a parent?]
He was so overjoyed when he got you pregnant! He basically carried you around the finalizer holding your stomach like a trophy! But when they where born and you found out it was twins he kinda... Freaked out! He was a manic father with this hurricane that just arrived in his life that be was not at all prepped for, he would stand over there crib watching them sleep for weeks, he tried to be strict with them but ended up spoiling them, he was so nervous and sacred of messing up with them, you both were being first time parents, and so young, still newlyweds, and with twins, but he loves them both dearly and can't wait for more
O - Outdoors [How are they with you in public?]
Due to the first order rules when aboard the finalizer doing your duties you are to ignore each other like your strangers so public is a strange situation, but when off the ship he's protective and snuggly and always holds your hand.
P - Propose [How would they propose, and when would that be?]
It was sa very small moment, he took you to dinner a little picnic on the hill while on shore leave and he handed you a rose with a beautiful ring at the bottom, and you where married not a few days later behind the waterfall.
Q - Quarrel [How are they after a fight, and will they try to make amends right after?]
He will buy you flowers and chocolates and bubble bath just to see you smile, he gates to fight and wishes you never thought about anything at all and he'll make sure the fight never goes too far
R - Romantic [How much of a hopeless romantic are they, and how do they show it?]
He is a romantic you can see it in his blushes, in his smile when you kiss him, the way he looks at you of an evening.
S - Snuggles [Do they like to cuddle, and how do they do it?]
He loves to cuddle, he loves you on his chest so he can play with your hair.
T - Touchy [How touch starved are they, and would they show it?]
You can tell he's missed you and if getting touched starved because he won't leave you alone, he'll get home of you and never been let you go kissing and cuddling and complimenting all day.
U - Urchin [What's one negative trait about them that hurts you?]
He can be a little overprotective sometimes, and his attention span is a little short sometimes so it's hard to keep his attention for too long.
V - Vibe [What energy do they give off when you're with them?]
Pure joy and happiness
W- Wedding [What are they like at their wedding?]
He smiled wider then you had ever seen, it was only a small wedding just you two, a official and two of your friends from the ship he cried when he saw you and he took your hand and never let you go for a moment
"I'm yours and your mine, and I don't ever wanna leave you for a moment"
X - Xtreme [What lengths would they go to for you?]
Anything you could ask him to walk from here to jupiter and he would, you could ask him to dye his hair neon green and he'd do it, just to see you smile for him
Y - Yogurt [What's their ideal place for a date?]
He likes the holodeck because it can be anything, but he loves a good picnic.
Z - Zipper [What clothes do they like seeing you in?]
He loves seeing you in your uniform but, he loves your little nighties because your so soft and cuddly.

Thoughts on a fun way to make a Star Trek/Mass Effect crossover? Or characters interactions cross-series?
like a full crossover? hmmm, certainly it’d be a parallel worlds type situation where I feel in Trek world the Leviathans didn’t evolve and create the Reapers and thus life wasn’t constantly wiped out and that’s why there’s more of an alien populace in the galaxy to explain the stark differences. And then time travel would get involved too since ME takes place before Trek.
So depending on which Trek you’re gonna go with (which for me I can pick any) there’s some wormhole shenanigans going on only what they call wormholes are the dark energy spots that Reapers use in ME time. The crew is investigating them when they go through it and end up in ME time (or if you want the ship accidentally goes through a la Voyager crossing over quadrants).
At first the crew is clearly trying to not get involved but can’t resist the chance to explore and learn the differences and when they realize this isn’t their actual past and can interact with the place more, which brings them into contact with the Normandy which has been sent to investigate the strange readings so we get to crew interactions of (which I’ll put under a cut cause it got long):
Spock and/or Tuvok, and Liara discussing the Vulcan Mind Meld versus the Asari meld and coming to the conclusion that they might have a genetic link back
Tali and B’Elanna having a field day comparing notes (and complaining) on what it’s like keeping a ship together when you don’t have all the parts you really need since Tali used to do that with the Quarian ships and B’Elanna does that now
Kirk and Shepard discussing choices made that shape worlds for better or worse despite the best of intentions and geeking out over model ships. You can’t tell me that doesn’t happen.
Bashir and Mordin are the only people able to understand each other in their speed talking and excitedly sharing notes about different aliens.
Worf and Wrex and Grunt immediately start a fight (bonus points for Wrex insulting Worf for sounding like Uvenk whom Dorn voices)
Seven and Legion (in a world where he lives, what do you mean he dies) discussing what it’s like going from a hive mind to being individuals and coming to find yourself and who you are as a person, like Legion clearly was more involved in finding this aspect for his people as opposed to Seven who had it forced on her but they share the desire now to learn and become an individual and protect those they care about
Janeway and Shepard blow something up by accident while trying to investigate something because of course they do
Samara and Deanna sitting down and just discussing life because I feel like these two would be friends and smirking at their friends antics and secretly betting on who’s gonna get into what danger
I actually have a lot of thoughts about paragon!Shepard and Michael being similar characters in the sense of having this burden of the galaxy placed on them and speaking out against things that people refuse to see except for the crew they’re apart of and trying to warn people of a war and do their best to prevent it and bring people together
Tilly and Tali and Gabby together would be a delight I feel, just talking excitedly about everything under the sun. including the sun.
Sulu and Joker arguing who's a better pilot and Sulu being fascinated how Mass Effect fields work when it comes to piloting and Joker proudly explaining it
Sisko tries to adopt Grunt from Shepard (no I’m mostly kidding, I think that Sisko and Shep have a great deal of respect for each other in caring for the crew and having in placed in an almost god like reverence in certain situations and the struggles with that. and then also Sisko brings back baseball to the Mass Effect world. Shepard absolutely hates that)
I figure the EMH would actually be most interested in biotics and the science of that and writing down to make a paper to publish as the first hologram to do so.
Likewise EDI is fascinated with hologram technology that Trek’s have and if the ships have ever developed sentience in any way and if she can incorporate some of that technology into the Normandy to further her own development
I think Kira gets along with Wrex and is angry at Salarians on his behalf once she hears what was done to the Krogan because the genocide of a species hits hard with her
Tilly and Samantha are even worse than Bashir and Mordin at talking so fast no one gets it but them and they very much do enjoy talking to each other
Tom and Steve have shuttle races until they’re ordered back by their bosses because really guys
Geordi has a lot of talks with EDI, some about his friendship with Data and the human side of interacting with a being that’s trying to learn about humanity themselves but most about the ship and the benefits of integration with it that allow you to be aware of everything that’s happening on it
also Data and EDI tell the worst jokes and everyone regrets this
Picard and Thane drink tea together and discuss philosophies and Thane talks about his species old artifacts and how they were lost to his culture and Picard just listens with interest and some ideas on how you could maybe get those back
Jadzia and Jack get along surprisingly well, they have a holodeck fight at one point and Jadzia takes tricorder readings of biotics and then they go out drinking together
on the flip side Ezri and Miranda get along in terms of being forced to live up to unreasonable family expectations (all though far less harsh in Ezri’s case) and having to carve out your own identity and also like...weirdly everyone hating you for no other reason than your character exists
Bev gets into playing poker with Kaidan and Steve and now they’re all trying to beat each other constantly at it
Saru and Liara get along the easiest at first and discuss the wild things their crews get up to and how they eventually just started to go along with the madness
Kasumi keeps trying to steal from Tuvok but can’t manage it and thinks it’s the best challenge she’s had in years. Tuvok just wants to talk to Thane and get back to the Delta Quadrant already captain.
Harry and Jacob get to talking about having to prove themselves and always being looked over and the troubles of trying to get your own command
Bones hates all of this, Kirk what the hell have you done now. That said he and Zaeed get to drinking and talking about the bullshit that comes from space travel. All though Zaeed’s is more about how annoying it is to try to kill someone in it. Bones thinks he’s just over exaggerating and not a mercenary at first.
James keeps showing off for literally everyone and turning things into a competition with whoever he can when it comes to physical activities, he’s still sulking that Data beat him until he finds out that Data is an android and then calls foul on it.
Odo and Zaeed grumble about everything together
B’Elanna and Ashley have a book club that they don’t tell anyone about and share romance novels and poetry while complaining about how everyone doesn’t expect it from them and that’s part of why they don’t tell people those parts of themselves
Uhura gets the translators turned off on the Normandy to listen to everyone’s dialect and language and is quick to pick up on it, she’s especially good with Drell and enjoys conversing with Thane in it
Liara is absolutely freaked out that Deanna sounds like her mother and Deanna is absolutely using this to troll her whenever she can because it amuses her
Grunt and Chekov get into arguments about history of all things despite that people keep pointing out that they’re from alternate worlds and therefore it’s different anyway
Chakwas and Chakotay sit down to talk about what it’s like sorta taking care of the crew and just ridiculous stories of things they’ve put with
Riker at one point talks to Miranda about clones and dealing with someone who is the same genetically as you but isn’t you and do you have a relationship with them or leave them be (they don’t come up with an answer really)
Mordin gets banned from taking samples of other aliens
Nog and Gabby talk one point about being sorta new to the experiences of war and frontline suddenly and the horrors that come with it and share their experiences of being trapped by the Reapers vs being in a Jem’Hadar fight and coming back from that
Guinan doesn’t care much for Javik but they do have one good discussion about what it’s like being one of the last of your species and seeing so many of them die due to a machine race (and worse, converted to serve that race) that you just can’t fight back against no matter how much you try (or that’s what they thought at the time)
Samantha and Spock and Kirk and/or Airiam have strategy game nights and really get into it and Spock will typically leave while Sam and Kirk are still geeking out over it until the morning
Quark is banned from the Normandy point blank
Worf tries to get everyone to appreciate Klingon opera, the only one he manages to get into it are Grunt and Legion
Scotty is especially fascinated with the drive core of the Normandy and talks to Adams about it constantly
Chakotay and James having a boxing match at one point
Jake interviews like everyone and is thinking about turning this experience into a novel and enjoys listening to everyone’s stories
O’Brien and Garrus get caught up in calibrations, can you come back later
okay this literally is getting too long already but I could keep going. I think then there’s a group discussion about the Borgs vs the Reapers and the troubles everyone faces in those fights and a lot of back and forth about things that have worked for one crew that may help someone else out (like the Changeling cure to maybe help the Genophage cure or vice versa)

Personal Log
Kathryn is still having nightmares. It’s really awful. Many times I can hear her crying in her sleep and then,I wake her up and I try to bring her back to me. Sometimes her gaze is empty, I think she can’t even see me and then, I have to hold her for a few moments and whisper soothing words in her ear. Soon she feels better and she asks me if everything is okay, if we’re still on Voyager continuing our journey to the Alpha Quadrant. I assure her that she’s safe and that I’ll never let her go again. The other night, she began to sob uncontrollably. I tried to comfort her but she wouldn’t feel better. She kept saying that they were still trying to hurt her, torture her. I had no idea what to do. I begged her to look at me and after a few moments, she wrapped her arms around me and she wouldn’t let me go. I told her that she’s free to wake me up whenever she wants just to talk to me or she needs me to hold her or whatever. I really don’t mind. I do want to be there for her. At first, she didn’t even want to listen to it. She thought she had annoyed me and she insisted that she would be fine and I needed to get some rest. Fortunately, I managed to convince her. We’re spending these painful nights together now. It feels right.
Meantime, I’m so angry. I still wish I had killed as many of them as I could. I try to control my emotions in front of Kathryn and really... I can stand my nightmares, my despair and my constant fear of losing her again but I can’t stand her pain, her tears, her grief, her terror. The holoprograms don’t really help me. I fight with Cardassians, I kill them, I hit them, they hit me back but I don’t feel relieved or any better. Sometimes I even torture them and I just... I was never like this.  I can’t control myself when I’m all alone and I can’t overcome my anger. I still hate those bastards. They took a part of her.  I’ll always hate them. Will she ever be okay again? Will she ever be able to sleep without seeing any horrifying dreams? I really believe in her, Kathryn is strong. She’s a fighter and I’ll be damned if I don’t do my best to help her and support her as much as I can. She doesn’t know anything about the holoprograms I run, she doesn’t need to know. Sometimes I turn the safeties off and the Doctor just heals my bruises without asking much. I think he’s able to understand. That’s enough for now.
We skipped movie night and we ran the Lake George program together. She enjoyed it. It was nice to see her smiling under the moonlight, for a little while everything felt normal again. We made love and afterwards, she let me kiss and touch every part of her tortured body. I can’t even begin to describe how much I appreciate her trust in me. She talks to me about her feelings, she cries in front of me, she gives every bit of herself to me - so fully, so completely. I feel blessed. The second time we made love... it was raw. She was frantic but I know she needed it. She was searching for something and I know she found it.
In other news, Tom is going to propose to B’Elanna again. I think he’s trying to plan the perfect night.  I’m really happy for them and I hope everything is going to be fine this time. They deserve happiness. They deserve a big family with many kids who’ll be strong as their mother and witty as their father. It’s funny, but Tom saved my life again - in a more amusing way than usual. The other day, he asked desperately for my holodeck hours and I think I’d give them to him anyway but he told me that I could ask him for anything. Well, I really needed his help for the Indiana holoprogram I was trying to design for Kathryn’s birthday. God, I’m so bad at designing holoprograms....really bad. He accepted and he literally saved me. I’m pretty sure it’ll be great. I think Kathryn has forgotten that her birthday is in a few days. She hasn’t mentioned anything. Well, I’ll do my best to make sure she enjoys it and I’ll never forget how much Tom helped me.

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions, Finevoice. The funny thing about morality is that you can justify anything if it’s in the pursuit of a greater good. It’s all a matter of where you draw the line.”
Okay, so since my thoughts on the storylines are getting longer, I’m going to start putting them under a ‘keep reading.’
The ‘Gun and Sorcery’ storyline, like ‘His Blue Soul’ before it, continues the trend of giving us brilliant and interesting character development which I just love. It also, more than any storyline before it, is a bunch of shorter subplots held together by the main plot of the mysterious Gunslinger. It’s fun to watch the short storylines within the larger one.
I like the lore we learn in this storyline about how magic works in the AT4W universe. It’s interesting and not something I’ve seen done before.
I remember Linkara saying, when this storyline was first airing, that a big part of the reason he wanted to do a storyline about Linkara possible turning evil was because of the TGWTG Anniversary specials. Doug Walker (the Nostalgia Critic) tends to write the other reviewers as all being jerks even when they aren’t normally and Linkara’s character was no exception. Since Linkara is one of the reviews who likes the reviewerverse the most and tries to keep everything in the same universe, he wanted to address the way his character behaved in the anniversary specials which is why the majority of the flashbacks of him being ‘evil’ are from them.
Holokara is terrifying and he makes a great villain. The implication that Linkara could one day become like him makes his actions seem all the worse. The times Holokara calmly threatened to maim and kill the others, all with a smile on his face, were so chilling.
Here’s the thing though; while I do believe that our Linkara had and still has the potential to turn evil, I don’t think he’d ever have become the same brand of evil as Holokara. At times, Linkara has been angry and unreasonable, he’s contemplate doing terrible things in the name of the greater good, he’s yelled at people for annoying him but he’s never hurt 90’s Kid (now 90’s Dude) simply for annoying him or calmly threatened to maim Harvey Finevoice for disagreeing with him.
A few months before Holokara grabbed 90’s Kid’s heart, when Linkara was very stressed he yelled at 90’s Kid in anger that he could throttle him. He then immediately apologised when Harvey called him out on it. Holokara grabbed 90’s Kid’s heart and threatened his life because 90’s Kid had interrupted his review. Linkara wouldn’t have done that. A version of our Linkara, that was farther down the road of evil, might have yelled at 90’s Kid at the time of the interruption, he might even have punched him but he wouldn’t have done what Holokara did.
Yes, Linkara was heading down a darker path. If Margret hadn’t intervened, he might have turned evil but in a different way. He could have become more selfish, powerful, pushed the others away and maybe even decided to take out people he deemed a threat before they even did anything. He wouldn’t have been willing to murder innocent people over a comic book storyline he disapproved of.
That leaves us will the question of why Holokara turned out the way he did if our Linkara wasn’t destined to become like him. I have a theory.
Technically, Holokara should have been LESS evil than Linkara. Think about it. Holokara was first brought online so that Linkara wouldn’t get trapped in Silent Hill again. He is based on scans of Linkara’s brain before he faced the Entity, before Lord Vyce came back for the first time and those things contributed to Linkara heading down a darker path. Word of God says Holokara was never used between Silent Hill and being brought back online to review comics while Linkara went on his quest.
Why is Holokara evil? Well I think Whately succeeded in his plan more than anyone realised. He wanted to hollow out Linkara and use him as a vessel to spared the message of the Entity and Silent Hill.
Obviously, Holokara didn’t die when Pyramid Head stabbed him through the chest but I do think that some of the magic of the place changed Holokara in a way that wouldn’t show up in a normal scan of the mobile emitter. Holokara wanted to choose what stories got told and was willing to use fear and force to achieve it, just like Whately wanted.
Poor 90’s Kid. He always seems to get the rough end of things. Someone hug my baby! He deserves better!
For me, the ‘Gun and Sorcery’ storyline is the one where Linksano finally completes his journey from villain to hero (all be it while being a very chaotic form of good). He is now a loyal member of the comicrew and I think he should be trusted completely. I admit that when Linkara first started employing him, I expected him to turn on the others at some point. After Holokara, I no longer believed it.
The others could be counted upon to team up against Holokara and try to take him down. However, it would probably have been safer and easier for Linksano not to help. Hell, he could have warned Holokara about the plan and tried to get on his good side or used this as the perfect distraction to start his own evil scheme. He didn’t do that and instead did everything he could to take down Holokara down with the others. He is officially one of the good guys now.
Yey! It was great to finally learn Margret’s name and see her talking with Linkara.
Harvey Finevoice’s backstory is just heart breaking. Harvey needs a hug too.  There where jokes the year that storyline happened that Linkara had ruined Christmas with feels. AT4W! The mainly light-hearted comic book review show with more dead children than you’d expect.
I’m glad Harvey was able to let himself finally move on from Charlie’s death rather than trying to replace him with Linkara. To me, he’ll always be the unofficial dad of the group but he’s no longer just doing it because Linkara reminds him of Charlie. He cares about the others in their own right.
It’s nice to watch Linkara fight Insano again. Insano doesn’t do much actual villainy these days. I like the fact that Linkara tried the whole “I have a holodeck. You don’t need to do this,” thing with Insano but, unlike with Linksano, it didn’t work.
Jaeris is awesome. I love every minute of him. Like Linksano said about good intentions and the path to hell, Jaeris only wanted to be a hero and save his world. Things weren’t to be and you could argue that he was forced by necessity into the role of anti-hero.
Despite how understandably angry Jaeris was after Linkara destroyed his watch (though I don’t think either character was completely right or wrong in that situation) he still chooses to fight alongside him to stop Insano. He might not be ready to call Linkara friend yet but he’s willing not to be enemies.
Everyone in AT4W needs a gosh darn hug so bad! Poor 90’s Kid, Linkara, Harvey Finevoice, Jaeris and Nimue! They all face hardship in this storyline. Linkara has really gotten into his stride of setting up future storylines now what with Nimue’s malfunctions throughout ‘Gun and Sorcery.’

Ficlet: Trick of the Light (T)
An episode tag for ‘Worst Case Scenario’, written to two dialogue prompts: “Is there a reason you’re naked in my bed?” and “I’m going to need you to put on some clothes before you say anything else."
“Computer, freeze program!”
As the computer chirped obligingly, she realised her mouth was hanging open and closed it with a snap. Her hands went automatically to her hips as she stared at the unbelievable sight before her.
“Well, Commander,” she muttered, fighting the blush that rose up from her collar, “there’d better be a damn good reason why you’re naked in my bed.”
All she’d wanted was a few hours of escapism on the holodeck. It had been weeks since she’d had any downtime, and when she’d overhead Harry and Neelix whispering in the mess hall about the mysterious new program B’Elanna had unearthed, her curiosity had got the better of her.
She’d played out the astonishing scenario – a Starfleet security ensign caught up in a Maquis mutiny; who on earth dreamed these things up? – and had really started to get into the spirit of it, defecting to the mutineers, dressing up in leathers and gleefully blasting a holo-phaser at her frowning, uniformed doppelganger.
But the story had taken an unexpected turn when she’d started fidgeting during a dull shift on the holo-bridge and decided to sneak around a little. The lure of her own quarters was irresistible – had the anonymous programmer of this little tale got them right? And if so, how did he or she know? – so she’d let herself into the darkened cabin and headed straight for her bedroom.
And that’s when she saw him.
Sprawled on her bed, one arm flung across his eyes, the sheet rumpled low enough on his hips that it was clear he wasn’t wearing a shred of clothing beneath it.
Her heart pounded as her gaze travelled over the well-defined arms, the smooth, broad expanse of chest, the flat stomach, the barely-visible V of his hips…
Horrified at herself, she ordered the holodeck to pause the program.
Then she got angry. So Chakotay had seen fit to commandeer her quarters, had he? How dare he! She was building up a full head of steam before she realised she was being ridiculous. The real Chakotay would never mutiny – he’d space himself first – and he’d certainly never make himself at home in her bed.
Ignoring the twinge of excitement at that thought, she refocused her anger. Whoever had programmed this appalling breach of propriety would have hell to pay! Just as soon as she figured out who it was.
And as yet, she didn’t have enough information to pinpoint the culprit. If she wanted to identify them, there was nothing else for it. She’d have to play out the whole scenario.
Gritting her teeth, Kathryn uttered, “Computer, resume.”
As soon as she spoke, the holo-Chakotay in her bed stirred. Kathryn cleared her throat.
His eyes shot open and his hand dived under the pillow, coming out clutching a phaser. Springing to his feet beside the bed, he growled, “What the hell are you doing in here?”
Despite herself she backed up a step, hands held up in appeasement as she tried desperately not to let her gaze drop below his face. “Whoa, easy there, Comm- er, Captain. I come in peace.”
He sized her up, clearly decided she wasn’t a threat and tossed the phaser on the bed, folding his arms. “You’ll forgive me for being suspicious. It wasn’t so long ago that you were on the wrong side, Ensign.”
“Yes, well,” she tried not to stammer, “I’ve seen the light.”
“Apparently so.” His gaze was raking her from head to foot. “The leathers suit you.”
She coughed nervously as he took another step toward her. “I’m going to need you to put on some clothes before you say anything else. Please. Sir,” she added hastily.
The real Chakotay’s smile had never been so dirty, she was sure, as he moved closer still. She tried to back up and found herself pressed against her closet door.
“What,” she swallowed, “what are you doing?”
His breath brushed her ear as he leaned in to whisper, “If you want me to get dressed, you’ll need to let me open that closet.”
“Huh?” He was so close she could feel the heat from his body. His very warm, very naked body, which was very close to coming into full, delicious contact with hers.
That grin split his face again. “My clothes are in the closet behind you.”
“Oh!” Mortified, she ducked under his arm. “Sorry.”
She turned her back until she heard him say, “All right, Ensign, I’m decent.”
“Barely,” she muttered as she turned to find that he’d pulled on a pair of low-slung sweat pants and nothing else.
“So.” He leaned a hip against her nightstand. “What’s so important that you had to come disturb me in my bed?”
“I was…” oh, hell, where was a good excuse when she needed one? “… doing the security rounds? Um, to check for Starfleet booby traps.”
“Very enterprising of you,” he said, his eyes narrowed with appreciation.
“I have my moments.”
“And did you find what you were looking for?”
The real Chakotay’s eyes would never burn into her like this. Oh, sure, she’d always known he was no stranger to flirtation. But this brazen interest was something new.
And the effect it had on her was disturbing. She found herself jutting out a hip, her voice dipping to a low purr. “That depends on what you’d consider a booby-trap.”
He gave her a slow, dimpled smile and pushed off the nightstand, his stride smooth as he stepped toward her. “Maybe we should conduct a thorough inspection.”
The backs of her knees came in contact with the bed. “Commander –”
“It’s Captain now, remember?” he said silkily, reaching for her hand. The pad of his thumb glided over her knuckles and along her wrist and she stared down at it, her lower lip caught between her teeth.
“Right,” she mumbled. “Captain.”
Because of course, this wasn’t the real Chakotay…
He bent his head and she felt his lips move softly along her hairline and down over her temple, her cheekbone …
Oh, no, she thought as his mouth touched hers. No, no, no, this is wrong…
“Stop thinking,” he murmured against her lips.
He’s just a hologram , the devil whispered to her. The real Chakotay will never know. And it’s only for a moment…
She wound her arms around his neck and opened her mouth to his.
His hands stroked down her back, pulling her hips against him, and she choked back a sigh as she wound her fingers into his hair. God, the thrill of feeling his body against hers, even if it was only a simulation…
A very realistic, very arousing simulation, she realised, feeling the evidence of it pressing against her pubic bone. Perhaps a little too realistic… Breaking the kiss, she pushed him backward and scooted out of his reach, running shaky fingers through her hair. “Excuse me, Captain,” she said breathily, “but I think this inspection is over. Computer, exit!” As she beat a hasty retreat out of the holodeck and into the corridor, she sent a silent thank you to the mysterious creator of this program, while simultaneously vowing to sentence them to a lifetime of cleaning the exhaust manifolds if ever she discovered their identity. Left alone, the Maquis captain slumped onto the bed to catch his breath. After a minute he stood, shucked the sweat pants and pulled on the clothing he was more accustomed to. With one last delighted, incredulous grin, he straightened his shoulders, smoothed his face into its customary impassivity, and called, “Computer, end program.”

The midseason finale of Star Trek: Discovery, “Into the Forest I Go,” finally got this show to the place it should have been all season. Of course, in the process, it had to jettison a lot of character development it has been working on—but since it was mostly stuff that was bad, I’m perfectly happy letting them get away with it. This episode was the climax to a season that never existed, a season where the plot and characterization was better. You can see that potential here.
A lot of this first half of Discovery’s premiere season—confusingly called “Chapter One,” since they’ve split it into two chunks (why not just have two seasons, close together?)—has been a show on the run from the weighty legacy of its name. Often, it felt like the writers felt smarter than Star Trek, and so we focused on a Starfleet mutineer, on an experimental ship, captained by a very bad man, with occasional leaps over to see how things were faring in the Klingon Empire. Basically, it focused on a lot of changes to the typical Star Trek formula.
Previous series in this franchise have made do with substantially fewer changes. The Next Generation’s premise was basically the same as Star Trek’s, and the difference between the two was mostly in the temperament of crew, particularly the captain. Deep Space Nine, probably the biggest rebel of the family, decided to eschew the ship on a mission of exploration and seated itself on a space station, and the rest of the major differences flowed from that choice. Voyager sent its crew into the unknown accidentally with a mission of getting back, instead of looking for adventure on purpose. Enterprise was a prequel set before there was a Starfleet, but still set on the most recognizable starship name in fiction.
And yet, all of those shows still kept to the foundation established by the original series. An important ensemble, anchored and mostly driven by the choices of its captain. Crews that spend time together, that are a team. Bridge scenes, the Kirk Summation, arguing over the best course of action, color-coded uniforms, disobeying the brass (in Star Trek, Captains are perfect, admirals are interfering busybodies who don’t know of what they speak), the Patrick Stewart Speech, technobabble, angry supercomputers/malfunctioning holodecks/capricious god-like beings, red shirts, the Captain’s log, and so on.
Discovery had all the trappings of Star Trek show, but didn’t seem to understand that the tropes were tools and not an unsavory heirloom from an eccentric great-aunt. The only thing that seemed to operate the same was the technobabble. (Apparently technobabble is the glue that holds the universe together.)

It was when “Into the Forest I Go” embraced those things that make Trek Trek that the episode sang. And it was when it deviated that it was at its worst. But mostly, it was good.
In the face of last week’s cliffhanger, the Discovery is ordered back to Federation space as it’s too valuable to lose. Lorca is indignant, saying, “You want me to run from a fight and leave a peaceful species to face extinction?” Which, given the way his character has been presented thus far, could come off as just him trying to manipulate the situation to stay and fight. But if it’s sincere, it’s exactly what we want our Starfleet captains to say. This is a running theme through the entire episod;: Lorca has finally become the captain we all want him to be, but there’s been no character development to make us believe him so we either have to ignore the past or just pretend he was always this way. I choose the latter, since it makes the show better.

Lorca decides to... reinterpret his orders and has the Discovery take a more leisurely route away from Pahvo, so they’ll still be in range when the Klingons attack. He and Stamets mutually agree to say there’s something wrong with Stamets’ new navigation pod implants, so they have an excuse to only use the warp drive instead of the instantaneous travel of the spore drive. Lorca also orders Stamets to get a full medical work-up so there’s a paper trail for their lie. Which worries Stamets since, you know, he’s had those side effects he’s told no one about.
Lorca, Tyler, and Burnham technobabble about the Klingon invisibility shields, saying basically that if they can plant sensors on the ship, they can get data to break it. Tyler asks to take Burnham, there’s some token resistance by Lorca, but that’s who goes.
Culber notes that something is very wrong with Stamets’ brain, but Stamets lies and says he hasn’t noticed any side effects. Great, says Lorca, I need you to make 133 microjumps around the Klingon ship—sort of like a 3D full-body scan—so we can gather the data on the invisibility shields in four minutes instead of waiting days.

And then Lorca gives a classic Trek speech about the grand and improving nature of exploration. “I know what drives you, Lieutenant. You’re not just a scientist, you’re an explorer. You could have stayed in a lab on Earth. But you chose to go where no one has gone before.” As opposed to last week’s use of “the needs of the many,” this use of the famous Trek staple feels earned. This is what Starfleet is.
Stamets, a scientist who has always been this show’s stand-in for the glory of it, says to Lorca, the man who has always been a hardline hawk, “Captain, I didn’t know you cared.”
Lorca, Lorca, responds, “We have to win this war, but then... then our journey continues.” I don’t care that this might just be manipulation—although gathering the data says it’s not—or that Lorca’s character development is unearned. THIS moment is the one I’ve been dying for. Some indication that the spirit of Starfleet isn’t dead in this man.

Stamets agrees to the jumps, and, while he’s prepping with Culber, Tilly does the classic “I’m so glad he told you about [secret he definitely didn’t tell you about].” Culber says they don’t have time to get into it, because the other great thing about these two is that they are professionals even if they also clearly love each other. (This gets even clearer when they say it aloud in this episode, a moment my black heart opened up for and also knew meant Stamets was in serious trouble.)
I almost wanted to do a separate post just of the faces Anthony Rapp gives this episode, as they are each a gem. Here we have “You have accidentally revealed my secret health problem to my doctor boyfriend”
As they prep, Lorca gives a speech which is, once again, lovely but unearned: “When I took command of this vessel, you were a crew of polite scientists, now I look at you. You are fierce warriors, all.” I wish we’d seen any of that journey this season. It must have happened in all those chunks of time we only know about because Burnham mentioned them. Man, I wish this season had been about a science ship press-ganged into a war effort with a new hawkish captain and about both sides learning the value of each other. Wouldn’t that have been interesting? This finale would have been even better if it’d been earned.

Tyler and Burnham beam onto the Ship of the Dead to place the sensors, but they also pick up the Admiral’s lifesign. (I knew she wasn’t dead.) Tyler and Burnham break into the room, and there is Admiral Cornwell, paralyzed, and L’Rell. Tyler sees L’Rell and flashes back to what could be torture but could easily actually be him as a Klingon being altered to look human. Burnham stuns L’Rell while Tyler has a PTSD reaction. Cornwell says Tyler is in shock, Burnham goes to put the sensors up. “Everyone comes home” is her watchword.
While Burnham places the sensors, Cornwell talks Tyler through his meltdown. This was a great use of the established fact that Cornwell is a psychologist and makes me wonder if this is one of those things that led to counselors, etc. getting assigned high positions on capital ships. This would have been a great use of, say, Troi in an episode of The Next Generation.
Burnham overhears Kol saying they’re going to jump and, to delay them, Burnham starts shooting. She shows the Universal Translator to Kol, which he says is proof of humans trying to take their identity and she says is proof of their desire to communicate. All of which would be a nice contrast of the two cultures if Burnham didn’t follow that up by immediately challenging him to a fight.

Back in things I hate: the memory of Burnham, a.k.a. the power of lurve, snaps Tyler out of his flashback. While I fully believe he’s a spy, I’m starting to wonder if the “everything” L’Rell said Voq would have to lose is also his sense of self and if he’s actually a sleeper agent. A lot of what happens in this episode would make sense if that’s the case—if operational security also meant when the Klingons transformed him they gave him no memories of not being Tyler.
Anyway, Stamets, looking really not okay, completes the jumps, the analysis allows the Discovery to break the cloak, beam their people back (with L’Rell hitching a ride on Tyler), and destroy the Ship of the Dead.
Burnham has a heart to heart with Tyler, who says that he encouraged L’Rell’s “interest” in him in order to survive. He’s incredibly broken up about it, and it’s his reaction here that convinced me that he might be a sleeper, because his pain doesn’t seem faked. There’s also the fact that I’d like to think this show isn’t going to go into the trauma of trading sex for life and then have it be a straight-up lie. Dramatic or no, it perpetuates a nasty perception of sexual assault as lie.

Lorca is offered the Legion of Honor, which he tells Starfleet to give to Stamets for what he risked. Again, I wish this show had included a plot of the two of them, opposite poles on the science versus military debate, gradually learning to respect each other. This was a... leap.
And then Stamets makes a huge mistake. Even though Lorca says they’ll just use warp to get away from the Klingons chasing them, Stamets says he’ll do one more jump to get the crew back to safety. “I’ve seen these stars through a lens no one else has and that has to be enough for me,” he says, adding he needs Starfleet’s best doctors to figure out what’s happening to him. “I’ll always have you to thank for the view,” he says to Lorca.
Tyler has a series of nightmares about the ship, which include some frontal Klingon nudity, because I guess that’s this week’s reminder that this is on streaming and not network TV. It was gratuitous and pointless and I hated it. It was absolutely one of those only on Discovery flourishes that shows that these writers can’t be trusted with the freedom offered by not being on TV.
Tyler stumbles to his knees in front of L’Rell’s cell and asks, “What did you do to me?”
“Don’t worry, I would never let them hurt you,” she responds. Which is weird for the person in the cell to say, and further proof he’s definitely something more than just a man suffering PTSD from being held captive by Klingons.
Your face when you have absolutely fucked up.
No time for that, though, because Stamets should not have volunteered for this jump—a fact reinforced by him saying he’ll suffer through La Bohème on a date with Culber when they get to the starbase—as he collapses and the ship emerges in unknown space. This would have been more surprising if CBS hadn’t, for no reason at all, already spoiled this ending in a press release earlier this week.

This episode worked. This is what we want a big Trek episode to look like, these are the characters being their best selves. The problem, as I’ve noted, is that you have to make up character development the show didn’t do to embrace it. Lorca sent Cornwell to the Klingons; his noble turn here came from nowhere. This episode was a look into a universe where the promised premise of the early episodes—science versus the military—had been actually explored and built to this crew united in one mission. I will happily ignore huge chunks of the rest of this season if the writers actually decide that this is the show they meant to make from here on out. This is the show we didn’t get that we should have.
Assorted Musings:
I was uncomfortable with the way this show veered into bury your gays territory with Stamets. Did he need to have that moment with Culber right before his collapse?
We saw a map created from the data of the Discovery’s jumps throughout the season and it has voids that could indicate parallel universes attached to the mycelium network. We know a Mirror Universe episode is coming; the question is now if the Discovery has just been transported there or if this is a set-up for later.
The choice of La Bohème was a definitely a Rent shout-out and not a particularly subtle one.
An unfortunate by-product of Lorca being a cipher this week is that I almost think he sabotaged the jump on purpose because when he gets back Cornwell is going to have him removed. And that the whole Stamets scene was reverse psychology. Who knows? Could be, a shot of navigation control later on shows a Lorca override before the 133rd jump, which was the last jump gathering sensor data on the Ship of the Dead. Which makes no sense at all. I get him overriding the jump to the starbase, that’s in line with his character all season, if not this finale (which, ugh, don’t go back to Lorca as evil) but why was he overriding the last jump of the sensor data? Did they get their own numbers wrong on screen?
The effects on the jumping and battle scene were great.
Always, always, watch Anthony Rapp when he is on screen. No matter what else is going on, he is giving 110 percent. I almost did a recap of just his face alone. I put a few in here, but a selection of the unspoilery ones can be found here.
