Jane Seymour Vs. Annette Crosbie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Jane Seymour - (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) - I'd like to specifically draw attention to Jane Seymour in the Quinn years. In her forties, she was ethereally beautiful, and while the costuming and styling was less than historically accurate, at least it showed off her wonderful auburn hair. This was also the show where I first noticed her eyes' brown and green heterochromia, which, along with her delicate profile, gives her that extra touch of magic. With this show, she not only offered fun melodrama, she centered the Western genre on a woman and used its plots to argue for gun control, anti-racism, anti-censorship, anti-homophobia, and the social acceptance of those living with AIDS.
Annette Crosbie - (The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Edward the Seventh, Doctor Finlay) - Despite being best known as Victor Meldrew's long suffering wife, Margaret, in the British sitcom "One Foot in the Grave" Annette Crosbie's career on TV is much more than that. She played Catherine of Aragon in the series "Six Wives of Henry VIII" and her performance is still regarded as one of the best portrayal of Catherine of Aragon ever (on both screen and TV). She won the BAFTA for Best Actress for her performance. In "Edward the Seventh" she played Queen Victoria, starting from youth and right in to old age, winning another BAFTA for Best Actress. She played the housekeeper Janet in Doctor Finlay, the 1996 revival of the famous 60s series Dr. Finlay's casebook, a beloved character played before by Barbara Mullen, Crosbie managed to make it her own and not be overshadowed by Mullen's portrayal. But of course her best known performance was in One Foot in the Grave, where her impeccable comedic timing was in full force.

Wayward Son reread!
starting the story with an Epilogue really confused me at first
the idea of Baz with a beard/ facial hair is....
Truly as much as Baz talks and thinks about kill/ draining ppl I don't think he could... likes Simon and Penny would (and do) without hesitation but does Baz even kill any of the vampires??? (Double checking he does kill 2 of the RenFest vamps with fire but only when Simon is in deep danger -- he also does kill some vamps at the end battle but again... Simon in danger)
I don't think Simon ever really learned to regulate his emotions. Like in care it was no emotions and at Watford he needed to be extreme to go off... and who was going to teach him control? Definitely not the mage. And none of the Adults where going to stand up to his mistreatment (or even acknowledge that it was happening) and now in WS he still doesn't know how but now it isn't ok because he doesn't have magic has a back reason
"he looks like Quasimodo" (page 5) i know that in AWTWB his wings fold in more (?) but i always think that Simon looks like he has a hump back whenever he has to hide his wings under clothes
"Surprise! it's your exboyfriend and his boyfriend and that girl you never liked very much!" (page 9)
Agatha and Simon are two peas in "what is my sexuality" pod. in my head Agatha is AroAce (ppl can be mad about it and yes i've read AWTWB) and Simon is Demisexual
WS again references Simon transforming into a dragon so...
"(fuck men, always trying to trap you alone.)" (page 34)
Simon has memory loss about his childhood (specifically this is referencing non Watford childhood) (page 38)
"'Yah. Do it, Snow. Live dangerously.' Says the vampire teaching me how to drive." (page 56)
it makes he laugh that NO ONE told an Adult they were going to American....
Penny and Baz friendship makes me smile
"'Imagine dating a legend.' That's the trouble. I don't have to." (page 85)
"Something specifically American: a gun demon,..." (page 127)
when Simon and Shepard meet and both turn into golden retrievers wagging their tails at each other
everyone calls the were-skunk something different
i don't think Baz knows how not to not pretend to not be a vampire (what did i just write..? - he doesn't know how not to pretend to be human)
"'We are made of magic. Without our magic, you're worse than Normal. You're useless'" (page 159) - this hurts real bad cuz Simon could have overheard (i don't think he did but if this was less of a YA book i think he would have)
so many things happen with Margaret that i'm not even sure i have a half-baked theory on what she says to Simon
Simon likes kissing Baz but doesn't like to be kissed (page 206)
f*ck creepy Lamb
there is a slip where Lamb reveals he's working with the Next Blood vamps but if you don't know you don't know (page 278)
do you think Baz was in Lamb's thrall? or was Baz just really hoping to see the good and a teacher in someone like himself?
so much goes down after the fight - and i have a grumpy face that the book ends with a prologue...

ROUND 2 - MATCH 6
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut!
Propaganda for Ghazkull Mag Uruk Thraka from Warhammer 40,000:
Ghazkull Mag Uruk Thraka representing the Orks! Ork technology works because they believe it does. Otherwise it’s just a pile of scrap metal. They are humanoid fungi that reproduce by releasing spores when they die. Their society’s currency is teeth. Mostly their own, since they grow back like shark teeth do. Ghazkull got his head chopped off. Somebody decided to staple it to a robot body. This worked, somehow, and now he’s alive again. Ghazkull’s full name may be a dig at Margaret Thatcher. Ghazkull has a human nemesis that he enjoys fighting with. Even when he captured him, Ghaz let him go, saying “Good enemies is hard to find.” Rampaging war-loving fungus with enormous physic power that they aren't really aware of. The only thing that makes their cobbled-together tech work is their iron-strong belief that it will. They love to launch themselves out of cannons for fun and their favourite pets are just hungry orbs with mouths and legs (squigs, if you want to look them up). Their currency is teeth. Nobody has more fun in the Warhammer 40,000 universe than an ork with a big gun.
Propaganda for Alkett and Karvek from To Clear the Air by Malcolm Schmitz:
the character work in this short story is SOOO GOOD!!! Alkett is an outcast from her tribe, and Karvek is a former friend deeply affected by her betrayal. But when they encounter each other in the desert with danger all around, they have to work together despite old wounds. They hit on all the core Orc traits--loyalty vs bravery, and trust in the midst of battle. Fundamentally it's a story about communication and understanding, and both are such good foils for each other. Also Alkett has an awesome mechanical arm. AND they use kickass lace magic. What more could you want.

FoTH space AU
Ok! So I'll admit, this one nearly got me. However, I think I have a solution, and that is —
Dune. Well, minus the sandworms, and the desert, and the whole messiah thing (ignoring Bonnie Prince Charlie), and the psychic space nuns (well. that one might be fun to keep around, particularly for Alison and Aunt Margaret.) But, the main point is that the Dune-iverse is a space setting without magic per se (it's drugs and handwavey science, but still) and with technology used in a very strict fashion (while guns exist in Dune, they're less reliable than swords, which fits well with the 18th century). So...
Obviously this all takes place on a planet with an environmental setting much like Scotland. "Yeah, but Scotland's only a tiny percentage of the whole planet, and planets are varied." Yeah, and tell that to a lot of science fiction writers. If that's going to bother you, we can say that the rest of the planet hasn't been fully explored or terraformed yet. (Actually this is something that bugs me, but I don't have time for it.)
Anyways, there's a whole bunch of planets, all across the universe, some of which are ruled by an emperor, who is the equivalent of George II, and who many feel came to the throne illegally, as he was formerly a ruler in a different part of the universe
Obviously Ewen is still as he is in the book, kind and generous and as much in love with the natural world around him as he is with anyone in his life. Alison, if we are going to make her part of some psychic space nun guild, is probably Ewen's advisor and Aunt Margaret's apprentice (because if anyone's going to be a psychic space nun, it's Aunt Margaret, complete with religious lessons). Ewen and Alison can still be in a relationship, if you like, or not, if you'd rather them just be friends, or if you're messy and like drama you can see them somewhere in between.
Keith — god, I'm tempted to have him be some kind of Sardaukar-esque equivalent, where he's been raised in this brutal imperial military environment from a young age (though with certain privileges as an officer). Perhaps at one point he fell in love and tried to break free a bit, only to be betrayed, which left him vowing to never get close to anyone again, and to dedicate himself wholly to the military.
Obviously, the plot happens much as it does in the book, although the Jacobite army may take to space, rather than spend the whole time on one planet. They are eventually beaten back to the original planet, however, and finally defeated there. And it is after that that Keith meets Ewen for the third time, and makes his decision to break with his programming and help this man, at no small cost to himself.

Maybe the only reason Emma had gone along with Killian in the "big car with the noisy lights on top" was so that she could fill out paperwork or give a detailed report on what happened. Maybe she wanted her due accolades at how well her magic had saved him- how well she'd saved him. Or maybe she just took pity on him- he had almost died, after all.
Either way, Killian was glad for her company. She had a light about her that almost felt warm, like sitting around a campfire with your crew after a long day's hunt. He tried not to stare at her too much, tried to tell himself he was just looking at her to take heart against all the things that felt so different. The ride was a rough one, and so fast, and he lay on a stretcher. The car was filled with all manner of shiny and modern and beeping equipment, most of it Killian couldn't begin to understand the purpose of- and he knew the hospital would be even brighter, and scarier- certainly not scary to such an infamous pirate as himself, but certainly much more disorienting.
He looked up at Emma, the Savior- his savior- as she finished speaking with a nurse and took a seat next to him.
He couldn't think of anything to say to her besides the "thank you" he'd already given her, but he felt like he didn't need to, didn't need to say anything at all. Instead, he simply held out his hand to her, almost by instinct, like letting out an anchor- an anchor that snagged itself, as it should, in her hand.
She took his hand and gently squeezed it, not once, not twice, but three times- and something in that gesture felt warm, felt safe- like somehow he wasn't alone.
Emma sat in the waiting room, filling out as much as she could of the papers she was handed, meanwhile looking over her shoulder through his room's window every few moments to see if he'd be alright.
She'd gotten a text from her dad a little bit ago, one that said he and Neal had gotten Tamara, and had gone back for Greg, and now both were safely in custody in the Storybrooke jail- and now her family was on their way to check in.
She tried to make sure all the details of Hook's injury, as well as what she'd done to heal him were documented as best as she knew- which wasn't great, since she knew nothing of magic or medicine- but the doctors could figure out the technical jargon themselves.
She glanced back again at Killian's room- he almost seemed like he was laughing at something Doctor Whale had said- then looked back down at the papers in front of her.
 "Emma!"
She looked up to see Mary Margaret and Henry, David and Neal close behind, and she got up to talk to them. Mary Margaret threw her arms around Emma, and Henry joined in.
"Is he gonna be okay?" David asked.
Emma let go of her mom and looked back at the room- the same room David had been in when she first came to Storybrooke. As she did, Whale walked out its door, looking at some clipboards. He looked up at Emma and her family.
"He's gonna be just fine." Whale said, "Thanks to you."
 "Emma?" Mary Margaret asked.
"If hospitals across the country had people like Emma, they'd be in much better shape." Whale shook Emma's hand, then moved on to make his rounds.
"Emma, what did you do?" Mary Margaret asked.
"It's nothing." Emma said. "I just. I figured out how to use magic."
"Magic?" Neal and Mary Margaret asked in unison.
"I'm the Savior." Emma said. "Product of True Love. It's all in a day's work."
"That's amazing!" Henry said. "What was it like?"
Emma half laughed as she knelt in front of him so she could look right at him. "It felt like lightning and rainbows all at once, like I was holding fireworks- but quieter."
 "That's so cool!"
Emma ruffled his hair. "You're right it was."
David tapped Emma on the shoulder. "May I have a word, Emma?"
"Yeah?" She stepped off to the other side of the room with him, expecting some kind of "okay now that you have magic you need to be careful it comes with a price" speech.
Instead he said, "I'm so sorry. I should've believed in you."
 "It's alright." Emma said.
"No it isn't." David said. "I should've listened to what you said, should've seen things for how they were- how you said they were- instead of how I thought they looked. I should've believed in my daughter."
"I forgive you." Emma said, then gave David a hug. "And I understand. Once upon a time, it took me a while to believe in my kid too."
She glanced over at Neal and Henry, and Neal walked over to her.
"I'm proud of you." David told Emma, and gave her a hug.
 "Thanks." she said softly.
David let go and walked away, giving Neal a pat on the shoulder as he walked by.
"Can I talk to you too?" Neal asked.
"Why?" Emma crossed her arms. "Gonna say sorry for not believing me too? I understand. You're forgiven."
"That's not the only thing I need forgiveness for." Neal said. "I should've believed you about Tamara, but I also should've waited for you when I found out you were in Storybrooke. I never should've landed you in jail in the first place. I should've held out for Tallahassee, because it doesn't sound nearly as nice without you. I'm so sorry for everything I've ever done to you. Will you please forgive me?"
He didn't deserve forgiveness, sure, but no one ever does.
"I'll try my best to forgive you." Emma said.
"And I hope you and Killian are really happy in your life together."
Emma figured that if ever there was a time to come clean, it was now.
 "We're not together."
 "What?"
"Killian and I," Emma said, "we're not dating, never were."
 "But you said…"
"I said what I said because I was jealous. I told you I found someone else, because you found someone else, and I couldn't let you know that I cared." She bit her lip. "But I did care for you. I hadn't stopped loving you, even after all those years."
"You know, I never stopped loving you either." Neal said. "I only told myself I did."
 "Really?"
"I thought every day about how I never should've let you go."
Even though he had abandoned her, he hadn't abandoned the thought of her. She did something she thought she'd never want to do again- she looked into his eyes, even just for a moment. Then he pulled her into a hug.
 "Tallahassee?" He whispered.
But Emma didn't know what to say.

i wanna ramble a little about my picks, so
the clock - i first watched this last december, ans i was completely in love. besides watching the wizard of oz as a kid (and i barely remember it), i wasn't familiar with judy garland's works, so i decided to watch the clock and i was completely in love, not only with her but also with robert walker and this film in general. it's such a great little gem, so earnest and so full of life, it immediately became one of my favorites. i just adore it
rebecca - one of the first classic movies i've watched (i think it was either the third or the fourth?) and it introduced me to laurence olivier, hitchcock, joan fontaine and gothic melodramas, all of which i adore. i feel so strongly about this movie, i can barely put it into words
this gun for hire - i had to include a veronica lake movie, and it had to be this gun for hire. i love noirs, and this one is such a perfect example, so well done, so distinct and so full of yearning, it just stuck to me
wuthering heights - the one movie that really got me obsessed with old hollywood movies!! i loved this so much i felt absolutely sick. merle oberon gave such a brilliant performance, im still mad that she didn't get an oscar nomination for this
the secret garden - i decided i wanted to watch more old hollywood movies starring teen/children actors this year, because i ended up really liking the ones i had already watched, and this one is easily my favorite. it's so beautiful, so well written, and it deals with grief and escapism in such a perfect little way. margaret o'brien was so amazing in this, and she was only 12!
hold back the dawn - one of my all time favorites. it stars three of my favorite people: paulette goddard, olivia de havilland and charles boyer. i am absolutely obsessed with him now, and this movie definitely contributed to it, but it was really olivia that made me fall in love with it. she breathed life into her role, and i rarely see anything quite like it. and the romance between her and charles boyer's character? outstanding. i rewatch their honeymoon scenes all the time. everytime i watch this movie i fall more in love with these three
hangover square - another favorite noir of mine! i watched this for linda darnell, but really, it's laird cregar's movie. linda is one my favourites, and she knew how to play a femme fatale like nobody else, but laird cregar gave one of the best male perfomances of the 40s in this (probably only behind jimmy stewart in it's a wonderful life for me). it blew my fucking mind. the last 30 minutes or so of this are out of this world. laird dying so soon after this was completed is a big tragedy to me, i would have loved to see more of his perfomances
ninotchka - i haven't rewatched this in a while so i cant tell for sure, but i remember ninotchka so fondly, it's almost becoming my favorite screwball comedy (and i absolutely love screwballs, probably my favorite genre). it's hilarious, but it goes above and beyond that. it's lubitsch, garbo and melvyn douglas at their very best. i just adore it
princess o'rourke - another screwball! this one is a little gem, one that i was very surprised to love this much. olivia and bob cummings are so charming in this, i dont really have that much to say about it. it's just very cute, very funny, very romantic and a joy. it has its flaws, but it's just so enjoyable that it's hard to care
history is made at night - my all time favorite. favorite actor, favorite actress and borzage, who is quickly becoming my favorite director, together. absolutely masterpiece. this movie has a crazy plot, but everything works so well together that it's hard to care. it's such a magical movie, that ties romance, comedy, murder and even a big tragedy in such a seamless way. charles boyer and jean arthur have amazing chemistry, it absolutely kills me that they never made more movies together. i could talk about this movie forever, but people really should just watch it, because it's impossible to explain it till you see it with your own eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was tagged by @norashelley (thank you!!) to share 10 movies that i love. not necessarily my top 10, but just some movies that have been on my mind lately

Had a fun idea for a quick one shot where unbeknownst to both Soap and Ghost, they meet each other for the first time on a bus. It is really short but it will still be up on ao3 for easier viewing. Notes on the imagined timeline will be at the bottom.
John MacTavish stumbles out of his third pub of the night with his two mates and girlfriend. They're celebrating. John, successfully enlisted and just finished school. Of course they had to celebrate. After John finished up at Credenhill, he could die in an instant. Margaret, his girlfriend, had sobbed at the thought. Now, she cheers along with John, David, and Archie, too pissed to think about anything other than the glory and fun that John would have. They all know his plan, gunning for the SAS. It was actually in their second pub that John drunkenly admitted his plan to lie to get in as early as possible which then led to a fight as to who the youngest SAS member was at enlistment. No one thought he was foolish or prideful. At least, not with a couple beers with whiskey chasers in them.
David leans over on his hands and knees, "I'm gonnae hurl."
Archie slaps a hand on his back, "Really? You're gonna gives the fucking Manc that win? That shit in there was piss compared to the shit they give bairns in Scotland!" He straightens and throws both arms in the air in an elated cheer, "SCOTLAND!" Then he howls like a monkey.
Glasgow is huge. They could have done this there. But that also means John would have had to stumble home to somebody's house and word of his…poor…behaviour would reach his parents. So they'd driven a few hours under the guise of a study trip to good ol' Manchester. Archie wouldn't let them forget where they were from though.
A few late-night stragglers give them confused and even irritated looks, but no one actually says anything.
Margaret kisses John's cheek as she hangs off him. "I'm starving. Hankering." Her eyes light up, "Let's get some chippers! Then we can head to the hotel."
“Right, who’s paying for that then?” David takes a second to interject before doubling over again with a concerning burp.
“I’m more worried about getting a ride.” John gives his most sober thought of the night.
“We walked before.” Margaret still hangs off him.
“Bus is right there and it’s dark. Davy over there also won’t vomit if we’re riding.” The lad had the magical ability they had all dubbed, anti-car sick. He’d hurl once they got wherever they were going but he wouldn’t be wearing it. Hopefully.
He tugs on the sleeve of Maggie’s dress and guides the group towards the nearest bus in a drunken stumble. David burps again which gets them to all start laughing, definitely disturbing everyone currently on the bus. Thankfully, there weren't a lot of people currently present. They drift past them as uni students advert their gazes and older individuals carefully track the stops until they get home. There are also a few straggles like them who stand in solitude, reeking of booze.
David drops down on one of the seats towards the back, far from everyone else. The rest join, quickly filling the small space. It puts John leg to leg with a fucking beast of a guy trying his best to slump in his seat, his head dropping low and arms on his knees as he clutches a beat-up cassette player. He doesn’t nod along to the music playing. At John’s contact, he squeezes his impressively muscled legs together and pulls the sleeve of his dark jacket over pale hands. John is ready to write him off as another uni student until another cursory glance reveals to him the standard issue military duffle bag sitting at his feet. John just sees the edge of a patch but wouldn’t be able to see the name without leaning over, quite obviously. The guy is military. John would chalk it up to just personal interest in the aesthetic but with his straight back, bulk, and seemingly religiously cropped hair, he had to be. His size and the scar on his lip says he has seen combat but he just looks…so young. Older than John, definitely, but not an old grizzled general.
He catches John staring, tilting his head towards John. And maybe it’s the drunken stupor or the passing lamplight, but his eyes are the prettiest ones he has ever seen. Perfect brown circles like the rich coat of a hunting dog. Their gaze is just as sharp but they’re set in such soft lidded eyes. The stranger flattens his lips and gives John a nod.
It’s a sign as any but something pulls John towards him, keeping his back tilted away from Margaret. He’d feel bad if she was paying him any attention instead of guiding herself through breathing exercises to not hurl.
“Hey.” He says, loud enough to be heard over his flimsy headphones. The small twitch of his eyes tells him he’s heard him, even if he doesn’t answer. The military is large. Chances are, he would never run into this guy again. Hell, he’d likely never see his cousin during work and he’d gotten him interested in the first place. It’s probably why he’s not embarrassed to hold his hand out to him. “ ‘M John.”
He can’t ignore him now that he’s loudly extended the invitation of conversation. He pockets the cassette player and shrugs the headphones off, “Simon.” His grip is cold but strong. Some reason, it warms him.
“You military?”
Simon’s jaw drops a little, like he’s stammering, then he clamps it shut. He tries again, “Yeah.”
“I just got accepted.”
Simon drops his gaze to his feet. He doesn’t offer him congratulations or anything of the sort.
“You heading out or just coming in?” He’s not in uniform. At least, not that John can see. His pants are basic black cargos and he can’t see his shirt under a normal worn-down jacket.
“Coming in.”
“Which part is harder?” The closer he gets to finally leaving, the more his excitement turns into something more bitter. He hopes it will go away.
“It depends on what you’re coming home to.” He rubs his lips, scrubbing hard until they’re raw. He leans back and finally turns his head towards John, “You want a tip?”
John nods.
“Get your shit together before you leave.”
The bus begins to slow and before it can even stop, Simon swipes of his bag off the ground and stands.
“Is that what you’re doing? Getting your shit together?”
Simon hangs off a ceiling strap and now at his full height, John can fully see the strength in him. It isn’t even because of his muscles. He could be the smallest person imaginable and he’d still see him in the same light. He trusts him even though he will never see him again. Lucky guys to be under him.
“Honestly? I don’t think I can. Enjoy the rest of your night, Johnny.” John unashamedly watches him step towards the front of the bus, swaying as it stops.
John stands, “Hope I see you then, sir.” He salutes him, back as straight as he can make it. He knows he looks like a mess, nothing worthy of being a soldier, with swept dark hair brushing his hair and neck, glued to his face in drunk sweat. His eyes are most definitely glassy and his hands shake. But still he tries.
Simon smiles and salutes him back.
Then he’s gone, stepping off the bus onto a dark street with broken lamplights.
To me this would take place when Simon takes a leave of absence to help his family and throw out his dad. I'm not putting any concrete ages because figuring that out might age me considerably. It doesn't matter if any of it makes any sense. I don't care.

🍒 from this ask! :D
🍒Cherry - Which two of your Ocs are most weirdly alike now that you think about it?
Hmmm I had to think about this for a hot second but I think Draven Cozenson (The Hunter, the Myth, and the Cure) and Korfel Domin (Trials of the Six) are the most similar. Observe:
Tumblr media
(text version under the cut)
Korfel technically doesn't have earthbending but he does have the power to control rocks and can send out and sense vibrations. Earthbending's just the easiest way to explain it.
Both are also inspired in by a character from the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Hugh the Hand.
Korfel Domin:
has magic power of earthbending dad friend part of a found family group
Draven Cozenson:
no magic power of gun eldest sibling friend works solo
Both:
mid-30s mercenary doesn't hurt kids gruff violence only child estranged

what she says: im fine what she means: the first time we saw mechakara he was looking for the magic gun. during a tale of magic the reason mark almost killed linkara was because of mechakara's influence. mechakara and the magic gun have repeatedly been connected to each other story wise and the fact that mirror!margaret is just stuck in the void with GUESS FUCKING WHO is NOT COMFORTING

Meant to ask this during the Vyce live stream a while back and forgot: Is Mirror!Margaret a version of the spirit in the magic gun where the Delorum won instead of the innocent side?
More like she never split into the Delorum because unlike Mark, Mirror!Margaret was always a bad seed.

What if, just like Sally when she was going through a hard time, Jack also went to see the witches when Margaret's mother left them? Yes, he learned close up magic some time in his past, but what he does as Foggy Jack is definitely more than some make-believe magic.
Maybe the witches taught him that or gave him that gift so he could protect Margaret better. But he wasn't fast enough when the soldiers came and gunned her down.

2023 Movie Journey: Masterlist
if you’ve known me for any time at all, you should know by now that i will not watch very many movies this year. i’ll aspire to, i’ll think it’s a good idea, but it’s just not that likely to happen. however, that shouldn’t stop me from the fun of trying!
my goal was to average one movie a week so by year’s end i’d have seen more than 50. that didn’t come close to happening, but i’ll keep reviewing them here and check them off my watchlist as i go. (this list just keeps getting longer but i enjoyed updating it for 2023.)

is our academics score currently "fucking dumbass mcgee" or something, who else in a fucking kimono have we seen lately, goddamn
Tumblr media
MAGICIAN SOCIAL LINK: GET. Yosuke as the Magician is.... interesting. I am not going to say he's a terrible Magician or make any assumptions, because remember when i said Yukari didn't make sense as the Lovers and then she turned out to be the Most Lovers Ever?
but at the moment Yosuke ddddddddoesn't have any of the hallmarks of what I would consider the Magician. He's active, I guess, but seems more compelled by external forces than by his own drive. also there's a severe lack of control and stagecraft to him. he's a bit sad clown but that's the extent of his performance.
The Magician is someone who is very active, who can throw themselves into situations and usually ride on luck and charisma and passion. They get in over their heads easily but also have a certain set of tools (internal or external, the Magician is very explicitly associated with physical focii like wand and athame and chalices, etc) that make them highly effective.
The Magician is someone who is a very mortal person, but who can feel the magic around them like a charge in the air, and they lift a tool to let lightning strike them, then channel that into their work.
Junpei hit that note right off the bat, reckless but effective, and later plagued by Imposter Syndrome (the perfect ailment for the Magician). Yosuke, I dunno yet. We'll see.

someone with some sense. points to Chie!
except she's........... not in the TV? she's fine? Chie calls the inn and gets her on the phone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Patient. We're being patient. We're giving Chie a chance. Yukari wound up being great and we're going to let Chie blossom into a rad person. Yep.
Tumblr media
there's a moment of Dojima being in a dour prime time crime drama, but I don't have patience for that and Chie too. The cops know nothing because "supernatural tv murders" doesn't come standard in their Clue games. Whateverrrrr.
Tumblr media
oh thank god a character welcoming me back home, i needed this, thank you. i miss iwatodai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaaaaaand Yukiko's in the TV now, and is on a Bachelorette-style show looking for a MAN and she has on SPECIAL LINGERIE and sigh.
Tumblr media
yo i got FASHION
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAD ABOUT NANAKO HOUR IS EVERY HOUR. man, i had to take on a lot of adult responsibilities too soon, but I didn't do that at fucking six years old. Dojima, you suck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOSUKE IF YOU LIVED IN THE US YOU'D BE DEAD ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW. YOU CAN'T JUST BRING A FUCKING KATANA TO A FOOD COURT AND SWING IT AROUND. you're only allowed to do that with guns in Open Carry states.
Tumblr media
cannot overstate how you're not my dad. i would venture to say you're barely nanako's dad.
aw yeah that's right i've turned on dojima now. i don't care how nice your voice is, your daughter deserves better and you suck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TO BE TOTALLY CLEAR
THE COPS SUSPECT YUKIKO OF MURDERING THE FIRST DEAD LADY
THE ONE LEFT ON A TV ANTENNAE
she's like 16 and refuses to eat steak, where exactly is she getting the ability to put a grown-ass body on a roof, did she rent a crane????? bruh.
I MISS YUKARI. SOB. where are the smart people.
Tumblr media
Anyway. I finally have the Velvet Room and
Tumblr media
wait its unfriendly girl who bumped into me who is apparently new in Golden!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao margaret is BRUTAL
can i have a social link with margaret because she's cool and has a great voice and i'm shallow and would love to hang out with another old soul of the weird metaphysical liminal limo.
please god lemme out of these tutorials and into the main routine already i'm withering, i'm dying.

may wrap up
i started my reading for my fairy tale class so uh, there's a lot of that here. plus the other fairy tale retellings I read for fun. cause im consistent. books read for class will have a * next to them
spinning silver by naomi novik- i read this after of years of being told i would love it and wouldnt you know it, i loved it. fantastic reimagining of rumplestilskin that tackles antisemitism at the same time. it was beautifully written, clever, emotional, and makes you think. i do think the romances were the weakest part of the book, i wasnt really invested in them but i loved all the protagonists.
overall grade: A
twelve by jennifer lynn barnes- a novella sequel from the naturals series and mmm this series was fun when i read it but was pretty unremarkable going back to as an adult.
refusing compulsory sexuality by sherronda j. brown- very good!!! it took me a long time to read, but incredibly insightful and illuminating. most certainly NOT an introduction to asexuality.
overall grade: A
rapunzels revenge* by shannon hale- a fun graphic novel, where rapunzel in the wild west and partners up with jack from jack and the beanstalk. she's funny and creative and the action sequences are fantastic! a quick and fun read!
overall grade: A-
six gun snow white* by catherynne m valente- another wild eest retelling, this time, about snow white. this was so interesting, i liked the first half but not the second half. it certainly wasnt like most books ive read. it switches from first to third person in the middle of the book. i did enjoy the commentary on snow white as a fairy tale.
overall grade: B-
cinder* by marissa meyer- first time rereading this book in years and it made me nostalgic for the rest of the series but wow it doesn’t hold up in a lot of ways. definitely cultural appropriatation, much clearer to me now as an adult. also, soooo predictable.
overall grade: C
beauty* by robin mckinley- beautiful writing but a very simplistic retelling of beauty and the beast. it pales in comparison to her other books tbh. lovely audiobook tho.
overall grade: C+
painted devils by margaret owen- SUCH A GOOD SEQUEL!! i was enthralled, captivated, obesessed. i want to write 10 essays on it. SO GOOD!!
overall grade: A+
city of brass by sa chakraborty- im usually not a fan of political fantasy novels, but im so invested in this series (full of very bad people) and ive been flying through. nahri is my absolute fave. i think what makes it work is it starts as a quest fantasy.
overall grade: A-
briar rose* by jane yolen- I didn't care much for this book. it was fine.
ella enchanted* by gail carson levine- MY BELOVED!! i got to lead a discussion in class about it!!
overall grade: A+ (ofc)
ash* by malinda lo- this was recommended reading for class and it was a reread. it did not live up to my memory of it.
magic fish* by trung le nguyen- beautiful amazing fantastic. if you haven't read this, do it now. the storytelling .. . .the emotion. . . . i cried. the art is gorgeous
overall grade: A+
kingdom of copper by sa chakraborty- see city of brass review
thorn* by intisar khanani- the third (????) retelling of goose girl ive read in less than three months. it did not feel very special. it was not bad but infuriating from time to time.
