Madeline Usher and Annabelle’s relationship is so complex, arguably more complex than either woman’s relationship with Roderick.
Like neither woman necessarily liked each other but obviously Annabelle held respect for Madeline, and I think Madeline held respect for her in return. Not a lot of respect, but a lot of respect for Madeline, who holds very little for the world. Madeline shows that the only thing she really values beyond money and power is family, and I think she does consider Annabelle family. Again, Madeline doesn’t hold any warmth for anyone, but she does show time and time again that she stands behind her family. And she has very black and white thinking of “Okay my brother married her and she is the mother of my niece and nephew. She is family.”
They spend a lot of time with each other, a lot of alone time as well and all of it’s awkward. The only insult Madeline takes to heart is Annabelle’s “You are so small.” Madeline thought that Annabelle was just using her own brother as a meal ticket and never objected to that. She was genuinely confused when Annabelle was angry at them for betraying Augustus. Annabelle is probably one of the only people that Madeline could never “figure out” and manipulate, and she has to respect that.
I’m not explaining it well but if you asked Madeline if she loved Annabelle I think she would say no, but if you forced her to make a list of 15 people closest to her through her life Annabelle would be on it. And before they betrayed Augustus, if you asked Annabelle if she liked Madeline she would say no but if you asked if she loved her she would say yes.
This too is yuri.

“He’s rich.” When people asked how you took them, how you convinced them away from me. “He’s rich,” I’d say. “He’s rich.” And you don’t understand what the word means. They were young. They only knew appetite, and “Here,” you said, “Come with me. Gorge yourselves.” How could I compete with that? You didn’t feed them though, did you? You starved them. Less and less of them came back each time, until one day they were empty. They were syphoned. You started filling them up with... What did you fill them up with, Roderick? What did you have to fill them with? Because you weren’t rich, were you?

I'll be honest there are a LOT of hard-to-watch moments in this show but for some reason that scene where roderick blatantly lies under oath while auggie stares at him, having put his entire career on the line, trusting him, having built a friendship, having been in his home with his kids, having promised his wife to take care of roderick's family..... goddamn. ushers are all monsters, indeed

What's absolutely sick and twisted to me about Roderick Usher being married and reciting Annabel Lee is that HE was responsible for her death, because HE convinced their children to leave her... but in the show HE also wrote that poem, in which ANGELS took her away, once again deflecting his responsibility in all the tragedies that occurred.

Madeline Usher - Setting herself up for failure
Because the thing is, Madeline was never close to successfully develop an AI human consciousness. Not even by a long shot. Roderick convinced she was, because either he knew jackshit about tech and algorithms, idolised his sister, was delusional about her progress, or Madeline was lying to him the same way Vic did, or a combination of all of these. Or Madeline was deceiving herself.
Because, based on the themes of the show, how could she create a fully realised human mind from scratch, when she doesn't understand what it is?
She loved Roderick's kids and his grandkid, but only as extensions of her brother. Not as people. She failed to understand Tamerlane's cry for help, dismissing her desperate (and valid) need for love and companionship, her immense guilt, and ended up giving her niece the most batshit worst advice that only further exacerbated her paranoia and isolation. She didn't bother caring about what the children were up to, if what they did did not pertain immediately to the superficial benefits of the family. She thought Napoleon made "debutante balls". Napoleon, whose occupation was in video games, provided he had had better creative encouragement and guidance, potentially could have been the best person in the family to connect with Madeline on a professional level. As an equal.
It was not a huge surprise that Madeline's digital recreation of Lenore was that soulless, horrifying text chain Roderick received at the end. Even as Madeline was permitted to a diary full of the girl's thoughts and dreams, she did not understand her, and at that point was incapable of trying. She did not know Lenore as a person, the kindness that drove the girl, in the same manner that she did not understand how people like Annabel Lee and Dupin operate. The one time she was given a chance at instrospection, when Annabel Lee told her "You are so small.", she squandered that chance by burying it with Griswald and never thought of it again.
Madeline was brilliant. She had an incredible, ruthless drive for success. She foresaw the necessity of her field. She understands how the world works. When it concerned her. She understood the worst parts about a person. When it concerned her. It was her intelligence, arrogance and hubris that Verna respected. Madeline also did not understand the good parts about a person. What makes them whole. Her humanity was amputated, half of it by her own doing, and she lacked the self-awareness to realise that her amputated worldview was not the whole picture.
So of course she failed at her lifelong dream of creating a living digital consciousness.

Analysed every colour palette of The Fall of the house of Usher and concluded that each tone has a lonely, faint, and void-like feel to it. Every colour has shades of different feelings, of joy and love and even intoxication but here, each shade is of isolation, the kind that you associate with abandoned buildings, fallen hospitals, smell of drugs. The colours evoked my anxiety, almost like I was hearing ambulance siren. As soon as the screen turned a particular colour, I knew death was near, "The Raven" was near.
Great fucking job Flanagan.

It's interesting to me that, in Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan finally cast Katie Parker as one of the few kind characters, when in the first two Haunting series, she played these dark characters who, I would argue, set the hauntings in motion in both shows.
