What are five unpopular opinions you have about Charmed?

This is the first ask I've ever gotten! I'm very excited but a little nervous that my UOs will annoy the few mutuals I'm lucky enough to have :) Here we go...

While I love aspects of every season (yes, even S8!), season one is my favorite of the series. It suffers from some inevitable rookie season clunkiness, but I love the overall tone and feel of it. Getting to watch the sisters first discovering their powers and reconnecting with one another is such a joy. As a mystery junkie, I also really like how Andy's presence as Prue's significant other and a detective gave the season a few minor crime/mystery elements. S1 is second only to S2 as the season when I love Phoebe most, and S1 Piper is my very favorite Piper of the series. Oh, and S1 Leo is utterly adorable :)

I don't really like P3, the so-called 'hottest club in town' lol. I could never envision Piper as someone who'd even enjoy going to loud and crowded nightclubs, let alone owning one and having to spend nearly every single evening there. I know the show wanted an excuse to showcase music, but most of it happens to be music I don't particularly like. And it's not like Piper seemed to really enjoy owning and running P3 - her passion was always cooking, and more often than not the club just became another item on the long list of stuff she was perpetually stressed about. I don't know, for some weird reason I just preferred seeing the sisters hanging out at home or at a place like Quake.

I completely understand why Phoebe/Cole is an OTP for so many, but they just never really resonated with me, and I personally dislike the impact that Cole's presence had on Phoebe's character arc and the show's overall tone. But obviously shipping is very subjective. I hope my Phole-loving mutuals aren't rushing to hit the unfollow button!

I know we talk a lot about how Piper changed throughout the series, but my UO is that Phoebe changed far more drastically. The Phoebe we got for the first 2.5ish seasons is literally among my very favorite television characters ever, but in mid to late seasons she was almost unrecognizable to me. It's not as if I ever dislike her, but so much of what made Phoebe's personality and outlook on being a witch unique to me was either stripped away or given to Paige (because the show apparently believes that sibling age order determines 95% of someone's personality- even when some of those siblings first meet as fully developed adults lol). I could never dislike Phoebe and she's still very important to me, but her core personality traits, values and even day-to-day mannerisms just seemed entirely different to me in mid to late seasons as compared to her early season self.

I love Paige's S7/S8 brown hair much more than I liked her blonde or red hair. This is a highly controversial opinion among my few real life friends who also watched the show :)

Phoebe Halliwell or Maggie Vera?

If we are just comparing first two seasons Phoebe to first two seasons Maggie, then I would have to pick Phoebe. If we are taking all eight seasons into account, then I would have to pick Maggie. A lot of Phoebe's choices during the middle seasons left a lot to be desired. She kinda treated her family like crap cause the writers wanted to force this whole Phoebe x Cole storyline.

Okay but you realize Cole was possessed by evil, right? It's not comparable to a person in our world CHOOSING to be evil

Not in season 5. He was himself, yeah sure he was messed up by all the powers he chose to grab. But even in that episode where he was physically abusive he didn’t have that. He was plain old belthazor. And pre-season 4 he was still himself as well. There’s no excuse for abuse yoooo. And the fact that ‘he was possessed by evil’ which he CHOSE to keep from the sisters, doesn’t change what he did. It does make it a tougher thing to talk about. But Cole did fuck up. And my point still stands. Phole is toxic and abusive.

EDIT: not only that, source!cole really wasn't any different from himself. Hell he was probably more stable for Phoebe. But really, the source had little to NO impact on who he was because even by the end of the season the source 'fell in love with her' (I put that in quotations thou bc the source is an entity than an actual being so it became Cole/merged with what Cole felt) and hell, he went to give up his powers for Phoebe. Which is all Cole. but my main argument was for season 5 because season 5 Cole is the perfect example of an abusive partner. The rest The can definitely deny in order to protect your 'precious baby'.

honestly i love rewatching the first four seasons but the second half of s4 is so awful not to mention that c*le isolates phoebe from her sisters but also paige … she’s the only one that can feel how wrong things are and nobody believes her. c*le manipulates her in thinking she’s crazy and they make it seem like she’s “jealous” when she’s just trying to save her sister from getting hurt.

Ahhww Phole! They were so frickin hot!! And I really do believe he loved her, as much as he possibly could! Hated how they ended :( Can't believe CW is trying to bring back something they never ever came close to achieving w their best show. Even when TVD was actually good. Oh he absolutely loved her. There is no doubt. He went through Hell and back (and literally too!), and he even helped her believe in love again after his death by employing Drake. I’ll never be over Phoebe and Cole. They were such an OTP.

I have no faith in this Charmed reboot, tbh. I hate that reboots are the new trend now. And spin-offs. Speaking of which, I’m, like, almost sure Legashit won’t last long. Too generic. Awful writers. And they killed their built in fanbase so uh, good luck with that.

i agree with your thoughts on the anon's question (about phoebe getting with leo if piper had stayed with dan) the show definitely never played phoebe's attraction to leo as anything more than her competing with piper. i was always super appreciative of the fact that the show didn't put a man inbetween two sisters, it's bad enough when it's between two friends. i just don't like seeing female characters pitted against each other needlessly

but i gotta say if it had to happen i would have more easily seen it with cole and prue because shannon and julian already had the chemistry (dating helped haha. but not more chemistry than alyssa had with julian which i've seen the anti phole/anti cole crowd try to argue a LOT) and it would have been interesting seeing prue who had so adamantly being against cole fall for him

i feel like prue and phoebe are just such different characters that i can’t really see cole falling for both in any well written  manner like he falls for phoebe because she’s such an optimist who views the world through rose colored glasses and she’s trusting and earnest and a bit of a wild child which are really not traits we see demonstrated in prue. like if you wanted to go prue/cole i feel like you gotta go prue/cole from the beginning. like it has to be both of them trying so hard not to fall in love with each other but they can’t fight it. to have like phoebe be the one who shows cole that love is real and that he can be a good man only to sprinkle prue/cole,, it feels both ooc and unsatisfying (of course phoebe/cole was insanely unsatisfying in canon so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

How do you feel about the argument that Phole is too toxic to ship? Even setting aside how much I hate fandom policing of what people can ship in general, I feel like people forget that so much of Cole's worse behavior was actually not his fault!

Sorry, Phole loving anon again :) I think Phole are perfect because they complement each other - she's so sparkly, warm, cheerful, optimistic etc while he's strategic, cunning, practical, snarky. But they've got key similarities too: they're both so passionate, brave, bold, determined to live to the fullest.

I love Phole as a couple despite some of the problematic elements which sprout up between them as the series progresses. Most of which have to do with the fact that Cole becomes the Source, subduing his human side almost entirely and skewing him more toward evil things like possessiveness, obsessive love, selfishness, control etc. Despite that, though, I think it’s important to remember that he shows he loves Phoebe enough in the end to “let her go” because it’s what’s best for her. Moreover, he helps her find love again - with someone else. It’s his overarching “I will love you forever” feelings for her, and his ability to place her happiness above his own, that redeems many of his mistakes/flaws in my eyes.

I hate how liberally people in fandom apply the word “toxic,” btw. It’s often used interchangeably with “dislike,” except here’s the thing: not liking a ship does NOT make it toxic. Those two words are not synonyms in any way. I wish people would stop using them as if they were, for the needless hyperbole frustrates me. Shipping is subjective. There is no right or wrong when it comes to liking particular characters or ships because guess what? IT’S FICTION. Live and let ship, and keep all the hate away, I say!

Back to Phoebe and Cole, I think the likability of their relationship is a matter of perception or preference, just like it is with any ship? I’ve always felt that supernatural shows/creatures/ships, in particular, operate in such a way that they afford (or should afford) more flexible morality as a result of the life-or-death and/or magical stakes involved. Things don’t follow quite the same rules as they would in real life, so why would character traits/relationships? There’s broader ambiguity as to what’s acceptable vs. what’s not acceptable in these worlds, you know? (Or, so it works for me, anyway.)

Phoebe and Cole will always be one of my OTPs. Antis won’t bully me out of my love for them no matter how hard they try haha. I’m with you, nonnie, and think they complement one another wonderfully. I think they’re good for one another - better together even. There’s such a lovely balance between good and evil, right and wrong, and logic and love in their relationship. I find it extremely true to life since we’re all teetering somewhere in the in-between at any given moment. Plus, there’s such undeniable LOVE between them, you know? They fight so long and hard and completely to hold onto it--it’s a connection that no person, no amount of time or distance apart will be able to erase. It’s always.

And I think that’s beautiful.

Ship that makes you sad

at the risk of sounding like a broken record… Phole. Phoebe and Cole. I love the passion, the struggles they went through, pain, and angst, so you get why this is my ultimate OTP. It wasn’t healthy, it wasn’t endgame, but damn it those two deserved the world!! I won’t ramble on I’ve been very vocal about it as it is, it just stayed with me to this very day and no amount of rewatching and anti-Cole discourse will change my mind.

Do you have an impression Phoebe subconsciously knew Cole wasn't a good match for her? She didn't want to marry him she didn't want to have his kid. Yes it can be explain by her age, but my headcanon is deep down she knew he wasn't the one

i think it's kind of like. well like kinda so like from what we see of phoebe very early is she's not necessarily the relationship type and that's kind of the thrill of it that it won't last like it will burn out so you might as well burn bright type shit and i do think cole kind of entered her life while she was mid-transition from that pov to a bit more mature, stable, looking for a long term love not just a quick fling type situation, which is why she pursued cole pretty explicitly romantically, but also really wasn't phased by the series of walls he kept putting up and the games he kept playing, because that was definitely how her "old" love worked like the chase and the crash and burn are all part of the game. so while on her surface level, she's thinking she's finally after a true "adult" romance you know something headed towards something serious, i think that if cole didn't have kind of all his demon bullshit going on on the sidelines, phoebe likely would have been quickly turned off by how just like. intense his love was. because he was like in love in love, but holding back. and i do think that restraint was necessary, because i think if he had just come in baring his soul and love it would have been a fuckin tsunami for phoebe who had never experienced that before. and then i think after learning cole's a demon, like, it really nestles back into the grooves of the old phoebe mentality. like there's no way this is gonna last, right? he's a fucking demon. but like. you might as well enjoy the ride savor this because you do love it you do love him. but it's the concept of kind of the time clock that keeps you from seizing up and running. And Then He Proposes. and now he's human??? and now there might not be an end. this might be it? and you really have to stop and ask yourself is this really all you want? are you really content with this, just this, forever? and i think that's kind of a difficult question for her because cole has always been her right now guy she wants him here, in this moment, with fire and with passion. but she's growing she's changing she can feel it she's not the person she was 4 years ago. and is she ready to make that call for her future self, to land her, permanently, with cole? because yes she wants him now. but the people they grow to be. will they even like each other? this is shit phoebe's literally never even thought about quite frankly she didn't built these fantasies about growing old w someone that's not the type of woman she is. so i think the idea of the escape hatch being removed, the idea that her and cole could like. not come to an end. keep going. not burn out. i think that really made her squirm a little because cole really was her choice for the brief but passionate fling. and i think she thought that they could both grow into more of that, but that was always why she chose cole. it wasn't built to last.

did you ever like phoebe nd cole?? because i think in season 4 beginning they are lovely then they are ruined. just wondering your opinion?

the short answer to your question, sweet anon, is no. i never liked cole, and i never liked phoebe and cole as a couple. cole is one of those characters that i got a bad feeling about the first time i saw him, and then his obvious playing of phoebe (the list he had of her favorite things…barf) made me angry, and even when he was supposed to be “good” and “in love” with her i didn’t feel it. i could talk about this at length, but he’s also really abusive, even when he’s not a demon, and ugh this is just a notp of epic proportions for me. slightly above skye x ward, but not much.
