The longer I work in CRM the more convinced I become that my undergrad degree did not adequately* prepare me for this career. The problem is that at the same time I also become more convinced that almost nothing** could adequately prepare someone for a career in CRM.
*My undergrad did give me a lot of very important background information that has been so incredibly necessary to work in this career and this is not a knock on academic archaeology AT ALL. I simply wish there'd been a little more discussion of what to expect once I left school and entered the work force.
**Except perhaps a similar job in another field science, which is of course, similarly niche and also probably requires a degree.

Hey Reid, having a major sad about the fact that university swallowed me, chomped hard and then spit me out. Any thoughts on how to get into Arch without a degree? I know I should try to be positive and go with 'not yet' but it's hard. Ive tried looking for volunteering opportunities but cannot find anything that goes beyond 'beginner'.
Hi dirtling,
First, I hear that you are sad about university not working out. Higher education is unfortunately not designed in a way that supports many students. Your frustration with the system is valid.
I tried to think really carefully before answering this question because I didn't want to blindly perpetuate ivory tower supremacy. But the truth is that archaeology is a highly specialized field which requires highly specialized knowledge and qualifications, and the way you acquire those is... going to school. Right now, you're only finding beginner opportunities in archaeology because you are a beginner.
I want to be clear that this isn't anything against you. It's just that right now, you don't have the qualifications needed for a career in the field. And I get that that sucks. But just like you need a welding certification to be a welder, you need a degree to be an archaeologist.
By all means, volunteer. That's a great way to stay engaged and get experience for the future if you ever decide to go back to school. And if it was the formal classroom structure you were struggling with, I would highly recommend doing a field school! That's a hands on, learn by doing opportunity that will qualify you to work basic archaeology tech jobs. You don't have to be a traditional college student to enroll—many institutions have programs where you can enroll in just a class at a time as you go.
Here's a post I made about applying to a field school in case that sounds like something you might be interested in.
Best of luck, -Reid

Hello. Hope you're feeling good.
I was wondering if assassins in modern au weren't assassin and just lived like normal people what was their job?
Hi, nonny. I'm doing good. Just found some time to rest up after all the moving and unpacking XD
Oooohhh, I like this ask, nonny, but Imma cheat a bit and use a lot of my answers from the modern-day fic I wrote last year XD
Altaïr
I think this will depend on how much you want to reference Altaïr’s upbringing in AC1.
If you want an almost beat-by-beat reference, Altaïr will be heading some kind of PMC that he ‘inherited’ from his foster grandfather. He’s born into the family business and it’s the only life he knows. Reading about new tech helps make the PMC always be up to date with their equipment but Altaïr usually reads any kind of scientific advancement on his down time.
If you want to give him more freedom to choose his own path, his scholarly nature would make him a job in the field of science or history (with philosophy being a favorite hobby of his)
History: more on archaeology who mainly does fieldwork, sometimes goes to conventions and symposiums to talk about his team’s latest finds. His journals detailing each day when he’s in the field are usually published and a lot of people in the field enjoy reading his thoughts… even if he sometimes gets off track and there’s suddenly a drawing of the person he loves in one of the pages…
Science: owner of a privately-funded research and development company (might even have funded it from the inheritance he got from his foster grandfather) and actually leads one of the teams. The company focuses on researching and developing new tech that would make life easier for everyone although Altaïr does have a notebook filled with the deadliest ideas for weapons that he doesn’t really have any plans to make.
Ezio
Definitely born into a rich family that operates one of the oldest banks in Italy and he’s being trained to be a COO. Would have summer jobs in one of their banks.
His passion though lies in the arts and he would paint whenever he needs to relax. His parents agreed for him to take art classes because they want to support him (and Federico is meant to inherit the business anyway).
He meets his best friend in art class and they start a friendly competition of painting the same thing.
His friend is the one who gets recognized but that’s fine with him. He paints because it relaxes him, he’s not there for the spotlight.
Their banks would have framed paintings of his and he still paints as a hobby.
He mostly works for the family bank as a foreign representative, going to other countries to help out a new branch, train the new management, and sometimes talk to possible clients and partners.
Ratonhnhaké:ton
His father wants him to inherit the family business but he decides to take over his mother’s job as the representative of their tribe and the usual liaison that talks to outsiders.
His mother is currently a judge in tribal courts.
He also works similarly to a park ranger and would check their lands regularly, making sure nobody trespasses or hunts in the nearby forests.
The Kenways:
Edward married a socialite named Tessa Kenway a few years after the death of his first wife.
Before that, he used to be a captain of a freight ship. With Tessa’s money, he started his own freight shipping company.
He’s now retired with his son taking over his company and lives with his wife in Kenway mansion. He sometimes visit his son and grandson to annoy his son and to just ‘hang out’ (“Isn’t that what you kids say nowadays?” “… yes. I suppose so?””) with his grandson.
His oldest daughter (from his first marriage) ran away from home after they tried to get her engaged to a rich dude, Edward knows she’s living with Mary and Anne, two old buddies of Edward during his freight ship captain’ing days and visits sometimes. He didn’t tell Tessa though (it was Tessa’s idea to marry her off) because he doesn’t want things to escalate and Tessa has a suspicion that he’s having an affair with Mary or Anne (or both!) while Haytham learned that his sister is fine and living her best life when he tried to catch his father cheating for his mother.
Even in a modern day AU, the Kenways will still have drama. Them’s the rules.
Desmond:
Ran away from a very isolated community that may have been cultists or just really ‘we don’t trust the government’ kind of hippies. Desmond likes to joke both.
Works for a bar that has a new owner who isn’t afraid to try out new things.
Desmond thinks he’s flying by the seat of his pants but his heart is in the right place so Desmond tries to be supportive.
Also… he was given the go signal to adjust the drinks menu and make new drinks so that’s an automatic ‘that’s my boss and I support his decisions!’ for him.
Shirley Templar is his signature drink. He’s other signature drink is “Desmond Take The Wheel” which is just him preparing whatever the hell he wants for a customer who cannot take back the drink because that is what they ordered.
Shay:
Used to work for a freight ship with his dad being his captain together with his best friend Liam.
Hope works as a logistics support for the company they work for and also a radio operator when things get hectic. Shay and Hope may have been flirting on the radio for a while (much to his father’s amusement).
The company they’re working for started making really bad decisions after the owner lost his wife and son. Liam was transferred to another freight ship to be its captain and, during just a routine job, they got hit by a massive storm too far off the nearest coast which they wouldn’t have hit had their course not been switched an hour before their departure.
Shay’s father and a lot of the crew died that day and Shay blamed the owner because the route was approved by him. He refused to settle and lost with the cause being given as damnum fatale.
Haytham scouted him soon after and he was a captain first before being elevated to Head Logistics Officer.
Arno
He owns a cafe that once belonged to his uncle (not related to him but was a close friend of his father).
He’s been arrested for disorderly conduct (he was suppppeeer drunk and his longtime girlfriend/childhood friend just broke up with him) but the officers pitied him so they just let him sleep it off in one of the cells. The dude on the other cell started singing along when Arno began to sing sad love songs. Both of them were drunk though so they made the police officer giving them an easy time… well… a hard time.
He uses the profit he got from the cafe he inherited to buy more establishments.
He’s now focused on learning how to make a bar profitable… by buying a bar.
Jacob
He was the one in the other cell. He got into a bar fight but he wasn’t that drunk. The officers heard the fight happen because some slurs about Jacob’s sexual preferences were shouted by the other dude so the officer just left Jacob with a warning.
He’s actually the owner of a small orphanage and has an out-of-school youth program that usually helps children from high-risk areas. All of this is funded by his family (to be more exact, his sister).
He has a degree in pediatrics and this is his dream job.
This might (if the rumors were true) have been because he had been an unwitting accessory to a tragic fire as a young man that led to the death of children.
He has an adopted son named Jack.
Evie
Doctor, got top marks in her batch, and continued their late father’s job as a concierge doctor. She took over her father’s patients who are all quite wealthy (including the Kenways).
On her vacations, she would join her long-time boyfriend (“You married yet?” “No, Jacob. Jayadeep and I believe-” “Yes, yes, if it happens, it happens, blah, blah, blah.”) who is part of Doctors Without Borders.
She’s officially the head of the Frye family which she inherited from their father but she always gives Jacob his share (“So you’re still a trustfund baby.” “Pretty much, I guess. My sister loves me… as long as she doesn’t have to hear about my latest dumb stunt.”) while also donating a lot to his orphanage and program.
There are rumors that it’s a money laundering thing but that’s unfounded.
Bayek
The police officer who had to suffer thru Arno’s drunken singing of his ex’s beautiful flaming hair and Jacob’s sulking.
Almost always gets the graveyard shift so his fellow officers can go home and spend them with their families.
Used to be married, and had a divorce after a hit-and-run killed their only son, he still has a picture of his family on his table and everyone knows he still loves his ex but the death of their child was too much for both of them.
His ex may or may not be part of the government’s secret intelligence gathering bureau… maybe. Bayek does not know and does not want to know as he doesn’t want to risk her job in any way IF she was an actual spy.
Layla:
Still works for Abstergo and still has a feud going on with Sofia Rikkins.
Kinda friends with Lucy and Daniel Cross, enjoys adding chaos to annoy Berg if she knows she can get away with (or make someone like Robert take the fall).
Likes to drink in Desmond’s bar (technically Arno’s) and always takes the “Desmond takes the wheel” option.
Okay, so these ones aren’t Assassins or Hidden Ones (officially) but I kinda felt bad leaving them out since I wrote about Bayek.
Kassandra
MMA fighter who came from a military family.
Had a falling out with her stepfather when she was young and she left. It’s not clear if she left on her own or if she was kicked out and she doesn’t like to talk about it.
She only talks to her younger brother although her mother is trying to mend broken bridges… it… isn’t really working… unfortunately.
Her brother is in the army per the traditions of their family and she always worries about him.
Eivor
Spokesperson for her foster brother and working to help out for his reelection at the moment.
Her passion is in poetry though (and drinking everyone under but that’s more of a pastime) and she’s working on compiling her poems into a book. Her poems are quite beautiful but tend to be on the side of trash-talking certain types of people.
It took months but the ravens/crows around the area of her home now recognize her and would leave trinkets as a thank you for always feeding them.
Note: not a lawyer so I’m not sure if damnum fatale can be used for Shay’s part but Imma wave my fanfic writer card.

Molly Mando'a Word of the Day
Gayiy’kal- echoy’la’s reinforced trowel, a sign of their occupation, and also functional beskar knife.
I've loved the idea of various traditional Mando items being also functional weapons as a matter of course. There's already the bes'bev which is both flute and deadly stabbing weapon (a HOLLOW stabbing weapon, because Mando musicians will just tap ya like maple tree). So I made the gayiy'kal for my Mando archaeologists. It might have been inspired by my own sharpened Mashalltown pointing trowel, and a lot of ill-spent time in the field with other archaeological techs thinking of having trowel fights when the boredom got too great.

post lost traction but hi hello!! If you didn't know, I am a community college student working minimum wage and recovering from pretty bad financial abuse. I just got accepted into a program that would allow me to study abroad in Ireland and participate in an archaeological dig site for the first time as part of a field school I was recommended for. Its really huge for me bc this is my dream and as a nonbinary indigenous latina Archaeology is a field I'm excited to be providing my perspective in. I'll be living near the dig site and immersing myself in history, learning GIS and LIDAR tech and drone surveying as well as excavation of ancient sites.
I've been working my assssssss off at my job and stretching my meals for days to make this work and I have officially saved up all but 2k of my tuition! Any help would seriously be appreciated you are doing me the biggest favor!!
The 2k goes towards the rest of my tuition due: March 31st 2024 which will be my entire bank account and all of my savings, any other donations afterwards go towards my air fare and fnancially recovering! Thanks so much!
Goal: 2k!

Okay archaeology friends, field season is nigh in my part of the world and I'm determined to create (and stick to) a quick, easy, and effective morning/night stretch routine this year to prevent my body from falling apart too early. I found a pretty simple set of stretches recommended for construction workers, which I'll post below, but if anyone has suggestions for modifying it for the needs of your average field tech I'd be most grateful.

this blog is inactive, but also a place of nostalgia <3
this was the first blog i ever made and i got logged out of it and couldnt get back in for some reason so i entirely remade like, twice. because i was a tech illiterate child.
anyways i made this blog when i was 11 so i'm very grateful it's still alive. i was lurking on tumblr for at least a year or two before i made a blog, which was crazy. i literally grew up on this site and it has done irreparable damage to me but also i wouldn't have it any other way. freud would have a field day with me, i think.
i'm not gonna remake, delete, or seriously change anything about this blog bc as it stands, it's kind of an homage to my childhood self. this was the tumblr blog of an elementary schooler with no internet supervision and i think that i should just leave it mostly untouched. treat this place like an archaeological dig. feel free to pick apart the psyche of 11-year-old me if you want. look and laugh at the homestuck and the emo bands and the dan & phil or whatever, but i think it's really cool that i can go back through this blog and see the kid i was. there's something kinda beautiful about it, i think.
anyways, if you wanna keep up with the adventures of Adult Me, go check me out over at @locrianking. i don't bite.

Mystery the archaeologist! Did you know that there’s another character in the sonic universe that does archaeology as well? Her name is relic! What type of archaeology would she do since you are an expert in your profession
Tumblr media
Hey Darlin!❤️✨
I’m familiar with Relic the Pika, but I had to do a bit more research on her before answering this question. I stopped reading the Archie Sonic comics after the SGW reboot—I didn’t feel comfortable answering this question until I read a few books with her in it, as well as reading her bio. She looks very cute, I will give you that. Very cute and very friendly. I like her! And I love her little boots! I need some new steel-toed boots for when I do digs.
Relic is a very romanticized interpretation of what an archaeologist, like myself, does for a living. I’m not entirely sure as to how an archaeologist would struggle with the tech that’s used in the field (it was mentioned in her bio), but it is kinda concerning. Before going into the field and doing work, one must go through extensive training on how to gather data and use the supplied technology to collect data. That’s what I did when I went to field school. You kinda have tech savvy on a site. Sometimes archaeologists can only visit a site so many times before funding is drained or something else happens. I’ve dug at a site where it’s troublesome to get to because we have concerns with rising sea levels. We had to be thorough and precise with data that we’ve collected.
Tumblr media
I feel that a lot of the work that she does isn’t ancient civilization analysis, which we could infer as either historical” or even “classical” archaeology as her background for field choice. It’s mentioned that she loves the field, but don’t see much activity in it. She focuses more in the sub field of archaeology called “environmental archaeology.” These are archaeologists that study the environment and it’s impact when civilization comes in contact with it. That, and they also help explain any natural phenomena that could have shaped the culture of the civilization as well! Think in terms of how a drought could impact agricultural communities, or how natural disasters could lead to some communities to rethink their architectural designs. That’s pretty close to what she does. I feel that this description fits her better, but this is just my opinion. (Environmental archaeologists are some cool dudes, they always have fun facts about plants)!
I’m not saying that this is a bad interpretation of an archaeologist, I’m implying that a bit more research should have been considered. Other than such, I think that her interpretation reflects environmental archaeology the most rather than her studying ancient civilizations. There needs to be a bit more awareness to this sub field in my opinion.🤩
Man, I’m sucking the hot out of all of these! I’m sorry🥺

Hange asked me to pass this message on to you! 💖
"Afternoon, recruit! Still impressing the other squad leaders and captains with your skills on the ODM? I bet you are, showing those titans what for! Y'know, you're a real asset to the Corps that no one could have seen coming, but God are we glad you're here. You're so valuable, not just to our fight against the titans but... to me. Yeah, okay, maybe I have a bit of a thing for you, but I can't help it! You're so sweet that I can't help but think of you, even when I'm trying to get my work done researching titans... I was kinda confused about it at first, but it sorta became my routine, y'know? It helped that you showed up all the time with your latest catch in that cooler thing that stops them from evaporating! I almost couldn't believe it when you lugged a whole titan brain into my office but you did, boy howdy you did, do you know how awesome that was?! We took it apart and saw what makes them tick, only to realise their brains are almost indistinguishable from ours! While most aren't capable of language, that is not a failure of their intelligence, that must be due to them not having a voice box or some other component that allows us to speak; their centres for cohesive thoughts and language are all there, meaning they must be able to completely understand what humans are saying to them! How cool is that?! We'd never have known that without your cute little butt! This is such a huge piece of evidence for the theory that titans were once human! We couldn't have gotten here without your wacky tech, incredible combat skills and bravery, so wear your badge with pride, my fellow Titan Weirdo! Even if the others think we're a bit odd, we know we're just a bit different, more curious... and I'm quite curious to get to know more about you, honestly. I know we're kinda in the middle of preparing for a mission but, if you have time, maybe we could get together on Friday and check out the flower field around the back? Just the two of us? I want you to tell me everything we have time for! How you're such a natural with the ODM gear, what made you pick archaeology, how you got so darn cute, etc.! Alright, I won't take up any more of your time, if you're interested meet me on the back porch at 6PM on Friday! I'll see you soon. <3

Hi C!
You may or may not recall a comment on Park Rangers and Other Complications from a year or so ago, from a person who said she was interested into going into archaeology herself. That was me! I know I've waited a long, long time to send you a tumblr ask like you offered, but I finally plucked up the courage and an actual question to ask.
Put shortly--I have already graduated from college, and every position involving archaeology I've put in for in hopes of gaining experience has rejected me (probably because I have no experience). I know the next logical step would be to try out a field school, but it feels like every field school ever happens in the summer! Do you have any recommendations for how to find field schools in other parts of the year, especially winter or spring?
By the way, I really love and admire your writing, and I hope to see that zelink build-a-fic (or literally anything else you wanted to share) sometime soon! xoxo
Hi Dee!
Aah! I do remember your comment, I'm glad you're here! Thank you for your lovely comment on AO3 and here 🥰 Life got a bit hectic, but one of these days I'll write again 🥲
I meant to answer this privately, but I saved it as a draft while I was writing up my answer and now it won't let me do it anymore, so I'll just put the full answer under the cut (sorry!).
First, congratulations on graduating! It's definitely a big step in your life. Sorry to hear about the job hunting struggles--it's so unfair that they expect you to have experience for an entry level job without having worked the job before 😒
I can't speak with personal experience about getting CRM jobs, as I am an academic archaeologist, but I have many friends who have done their time in CRM. Not knowing the specifics of your situation (e.g. where you're currently located, what kinds of positions you've applied for, what your financial situation is, what time period you're interested in), I can only give some more generalized advice. I'm also assuming you're American, so if not, this advice may not be helpful haha.
Field schools almost always run in the summer for sure. The reason here is twofold: one, professors running the field school and students attending the field school are usually available at that time haha, two, the ground is usually more accessible during the summer (i.e. not frozen). So on that front, I think it's a little challenging to look for a winter (or potentially even spring) field school.
One path would be to reach out to your college anthropology department and professors within there to see what opportunities for fieldwork might be available. Most of the time professors or grad students will know people that need volunteers for field projects. This is especially effective if you were a good student in undergrad that the professor would be inclined to recommend!
For getting into CRM work, it's definitely pretty seasonal for the entry level stuff and can be challenging for sure. Usually CRM firms look for field techs in the spring for summer/early fall work. Some of the searches go through university/department email lists, so it would be helpful to see if that's something you can get access to! If you live near the American Southwest or are willing to temporarily relocate, I can recommend you to a CRM company haha.
There are a few resources to look for fieldwork opportunities (field schools and otherwise). I'm sure you've done a ton of work looking through them, but just in case, here are a few :
The AIA has a pretty comprehensive list: https://www.archaeological.org/programs/professionals/fieldwork/afob/ https://www.archaeological.org/programs/professionals/fieldwork/fieldwork-list/
If you're a member of the Society for American Archaeology, they have some career resources: https://careers.saa.org/
US forest services runs volunteer opportunities at national parks that they post: http://www.passportintime.com/index.html
I'm sure you've encountered the archaeology field work bulletin board too: https://archaeologyfieldwork.com/
Phew! This ended up being super long, but I hope it helps! Please keep me posted on how it goes!
