MEDIC! Part 28 (Donald Malarkey x Fem!OC)
Tumblr media
This is the final part of episode 9. I have been putting off writing this for so long cause the episode makes me so sad, and writing it was even worse. Just a constant state of depression while writing this ngl. But it's ok, I finished it. I'm also scared cause that means we are getting to the end of the story and I kinda don't want it to end. But we must have a conclusion. We still have a whole episode to go and who knows what will happen.
This is in means no way to offend anyone.
Disclaimer: End part of episode 9, if you are not comfortable with this please don't read.
Based on the HBO show and the actors who portray the characters, not hate to anyone involved.
Tag list: @imusicaddict, anyone else please let me know.
The bed of the truck was silent, everyone hung their heads, or quietly shed their tears. I clutched onto Don’s hand as we rode back into town.
We loaded out of the trucks and into the deli we had parked in front of. We grabbed all the food from the shop, wheels of cheese, bread, meats, anything we could get our hands on.
I loaded bread into baskets, carrying them under my arms making my way back to the vehicles. I walked past Web in the entrance pinning down the owner of the shop, a gun pressed to his neck.
“Web!” I exclaimed, rushing over to the two men.
The owner rambled in German, trying to get out of the situation that Webster had him in.
“Web, let him go!” I tried to get into his eye line but his focus was on the man, I could see the rage in his eyes.
He says he doesn’t know what the hell you’re talking about.” Another soldier told him.
“Bullshit!” Web spat. Finally loosening his grip on the man and stepping away, stowing his gun back in its holster, stomping out the front door.
I watched the owner try and regain his panicked breath, before I too left.
Hands reached out, scrambling for the food we provided. I gave out bread to as many people as I could, I hesitated to give the cheese and meats we had taken.
These men hadn’t been fed in weeks, maybe even longer, if we gave them rich food they would get sick. We needed to give them rations, only small portions, if we gave them full meals it could be deadly.
“Major Winters.” I called to the man as he handed out bread to the prisoners. He stopped turning to face me.
“Yes?” Dick asked moving closer to the edge of the truck to where I stood.
“Sir, we need to be cautious of how much food we are giving the prisoners. If we feed them too much they could die. Also we just need to be giving out bread and water. Any other rich food causes them to get sick as well.” His brows furrowed as I informed him.
Nixon and Winters looked at me as if I had grown two heads, but before I could open my mouth to explain further Colonel Skin called to the men.
I made my way back to the group, ushering the men who had food away from the trucks so that others could come and get food as well.
It wasn’t long until Nix and Dick made their way back to the trucks after conversing with the Colonel.
“Lieb.” Winters called out to Joe, who was handing out food to the prisoners. I watched him leap from the truck and push through the crowd past me to meet with the pair.
They spoke in hushed tones, Winters did most of the talking while Nix’s eyes glanced around nervously. Lieb stood strangely still, taking in all the information that was being given to him. Joe shook his head with a grim look on his face, I couldn’t hear what he said but he didn’t seem happy with whatever it was they were going to make him translate to the men.
He bowed his head, giving a begrudging nod before turning back to face the trucks. I stood within the crowd watching him. He moved slowly through the men, not pushing or asking people to move. It was as if he didn’t want to make it to the destination he was heading.
I glanced back to Dick, who was speaking to Grant and Christenson, more words exchanged, more reluctant head nods.
Lieb’s loud voice pulled my focus. He stood on the back of the truck yelling in German, trying to get everyone’s attention.
A hand landed on my shoulder, I didn’t have time to glimpse who it was, their face moved closer to my ear.
“We are locking the prisoners back up, be prepared.” Grant whispered, he didn’t wait around for my reply, moving to the next soldier to give the same message.
I stepped back out of the crowd, Easy had already surrounded the prisoners while Lieb began to speak.
The prisoners cried in protest, shaking their heads in disbelief, but before they could even try to put up a fight the men moved them forward, pushing them closer to the hell they were just freed from, only to be locked up again by their so-called saviours.
I looked away from the awful scene, to lay eyes on Lieb. He had finished his announcement, crumpling into the bed of the truck in defeat. His chest heaved, sobs leaving mouth.
I was in the bed of the truck in seconds, clambering in as quickly as I could to kneel in front of Joe. I wrapped my arms around him pulling him into my embrace, I clung to him as he wept. His warm tears dripped down my neck as he crushed me to his chest. I didn’t utter a word, I couldn’t think of anything to say to make the situation better. So I just held him, my hand tangling in his hair at the nape of his neck, the other rubbed circles on his back trying to sooth his pain.
But I don’t think much would ease the hurt, this is something that he would have to carry with him until the day he died.
*************************************
“Em, come on, let’s go.” Babe knelt in front of me, his warm hands on my arms. I looked up from the floor to find we were back in the village.
“They have dinner for us inside.” Babe urged, giving me a squeeze. I nodded my head, finding my feet to stand and get out of the bed of the truck. My autopilot had been turned off, now everything felt manual. Even the parts that weren’t, in and out, keep breathing.
I sat at the end of the table with my hands in my lap. I stared down into the bowl of soup that had been placed in front of me. The sight of food churned my stomach, I closed my eyes willing the nausea to pass. The room spun and the smell of the camp wouldn’t leave my brain. Saliva filled my mouth as my teeth began to violently chatter, there was no stopping it.
I sprung to my feet, hand gripping my mouth begging the contents of my stomach to stay put so I could make it outside.
I hid behind the side of the house we boarded at heaving and gagging. I spat the taste from the mouth, leaning against the wall for support.
A handkerchief was thrusted under my face, I looked up to see who had followed me outside. But it wasn’t one of the men. Speirs stood still holding out the cloth for me to take, a sad smile plaguing his lips.
“Thanks.” I sniffed, taking the handkerchief and wiping my running nose. After I was done I handed it back to him.
“You keep it.” Spiers pushed it back towards me.
“Oh right, you probably don’t want my snot all over it.” I pocketed the material.
“Do you want to sit?” Speirs asked, motioning his head towards the bench further down the side of the house.
“Sure.” I nodded making my way to the seat.
We sat in silence for a bit, watching soldiers pass us by. I was glad to be outside and not still sitting at the table.
“Are you doing ok?” Ron broke the comfortable silence. I looked over, his eyes were still trained on the world ahead of him.
“No.” I replied. I thought about lying, making excuses, saying other people were having it worse, but I chose the truth. Ron knew me well, it seemed like more work to be deceptive.
“How about you?” I asked, keeping my eyes straight ahead at the view before us.
“Yeah, not great either.” He said quietly. I bit my lip, guess he figured the same as me. Lying to each other was a waste of time.
“I feel awful about locking them up again. I know it’s to keep them safe and alive, but we had teased them with freedom, only to put them back into that nightmare.” I rambled on, my feelings finally spilling from my lips.
“Me too.” Speirs agreed, his hand reached over to mine. Ron took my hand giving it a squeeze, before putting it in his lap.
“There are more.” He said sadly as he traced circles in my palm. “Some are worse.”
I nodded as I listened to him speak.
“But you already knew that.” I quickly turned my attention back to the man, a questioning look on my face, how did he?
“I spoke to Malarkey. He told me that the nurses had heard rumours about the camps.” He informed me.
“Oh.” I said, sighing in relief, for a split second I thought he had somehow figured out my secret.
“What are we going to do?” I wondered out loud. Maybe Ron had some answers to my questions.
“Well we are leaving, but the locals here are going to be made to bury the bodies. General Taylor is going to be issuing martial law soon. Every able bodied German here will be made to clean up tomorrow morning.” Speirs replied.
“There are so many to bury. Who’s making sure that they follow martial law?” I asked.
“I know, but it’s what's right. Those people need to be laid to rest. And to answer your question, the 10th Armored are going to supervise.” Speirs placed my hand back into my own lap, before standing. I looked up at the man, the sad smile again on his lips. Ron cupped my cheek gently, his thumb tracing my cheekbone before walking off.
I sat outside for a time longer, watching people pass me by. Soon night fell and I made my way back into the house, to rest. I didn’t think sleep would be so kind to take me tonight, so I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling above me, waiting patiently for the sun to rise again.
We sat in a bombed out building overlooking what used to be the town square, rubble and debris covered the ground. We watched as the locals slowly cleaned, a quartet had formed in the middle of it all. They played sad songs, it was hauntingly beautiful.
The men smoked as they watched, no one spoke, only looked on. Nixon appeared beside me, he looked solemn. Lew took a beat before speaking.
“Hitler’s dead.” It wasn’t a joyous announcement, his tone remained steady, no smile formed behind his eyes, it was just a fact.
Nix caught our attention though, everyone’s head swivelled in his direction, looking to see if he was telling us the truth.
“Holy shit.” Lieb whispered.
“Shot himself in Berlin.” Nix finished his statement.
“Is the war over, sir?” Bull asked hesitantly, hopefully.
“No.” Lew was never one to mince his words, or put them prettily. He was straight to the point, didn’t matter if he hurt your feelings or not, he would say it how it was.
Still it crushed the shreds of hope we all felt momentarily blossom in our chests.
“We have orders to Berchtesgaden. We’re going to move out in one hour.” Lew informed us. I sighed more orders, how was there more?
“Why? The man’s not home.” Web asked, I nodded thinking the same thing. Couldn’t this all be over by now?
Nonetheless we all got up from our perches and made our way out of the building. Web went on about how the man should’ve killed himself three years ago to save us all the trouble.
“You all good?” Lieb nudged me. I nodded.
“Just tired.” But that’s not what I meant. I was tired, but it wasn’t due to the lack of sleep from last night, I was tired. I just want to go home, but ironically I don’t even have one.
“Let’s just get this over with.” I looped my arm through Lieb’s as we left the building making our way back so we could pack up and move out.

Legend of Zelda Theme Park - Undeveloped Ideas
More theme park stuff! This time around, I’m listing some things that I would like to include, but haven’t been able to develop well enough to make “official,” so to speak. I would welcome any ideas my readers might have in that direction.
Desert Area
There is one major recurring environment type that’s missing from the park as it stands, and that’s the desert. The reason for this is twofold. First, the existing themed areas make a nice compact shape, fairly symmetrical and logically arranged with respect to each other. I can’t figure out a place to put the desert that wouldn’t look like an awkward tumor grafted onto the side.
Second, I couldn’t come up with many ideas for attractions in the desert—in the games, such areas mostly seem to be traversal challenges, with hazards along the way that make traveling difficult, but not much to see or do until you get to the dungeon or other destination at the end. And in the real world, deserts mostly are not considered very nice places to visit, unlike forests and waterways and mountains. I bounced around a couple ideas but wasn’t able to make much of them:
A sand-seal racing ride. Pretty much taken directly from the minigame in Breath of the Wild, with ride vehicles shaped like a seal pulling a sled, carrying riders at high speed around a track whilst being threatened by monsters. Fine on its own, but I felt it wasn’t distinct enough, tone-wise, from the other thrill rides I had already developed in more detail.
Kara Kara Bazaar. A colorful mini-district of shops and eateries, to get in some Gerudo cultural flavor while maintaining the worldbuilding detail that where men and boys are forbidden from visiting Gerudo Town itself.
Gerudo martial arts show. Taking place in the Bazaar, this would be a procession of Gerudo performers (tall female athletes with serious abs—what a casting call that would be!) through the area ending at a small stage where they would put on a demonstration of Gerudo combat techniques.
You’ll notice that I haven’t been able to get away from the BotW/TotK desert for my inspirations, which is part of my problem. Hopefully I’ll overcome the block and a fully fleshed out desert area can be added to the park!
Great Sea Water Park
As you’ve read through my theme park writeups, you may have noticed few or no specific references to games like Link’s Awakening, Wind Waker, and Phantom Hourglass. This is because the base setting of these games—the ocean and/or islands—is different enough from “standard” Zelda that I couldn’t figure out a graceful way to merge them with the overall themed pastiche. So I decided the best way to include them was in a “sister” waterslide park such as many theme parks have right next door (Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Knott’s Soak City, LEGOLand California Water Park, etc.).
The only problem here is that...I don’t have much experience visiting water parks. When I was a kid, swimming/water fun outings took the form of a) the beach or b) my grandparents’ swimming pool. I remember one trip to a park called Wild Rivers, but not many details—slides, wave pools of varying intensity, a “river” encircling the whole thing where you could spend two hours drifting on the current in an inner tube… It’s not enough for me to make generalizations about water parks as a phenomenon or design my own.
Nonetheless, I think a water park would be the ideal expression of those sea-focused games—slides themed around places like Dragon Roost Island and Mount Tamaranch, pirate ship playgrounds, maybe a flume ride or two, the Windfall Island Ferris wheel… Besides the aforementioned games, features could draw inspiration from seaside areas in other games such as Lurelin Village and the Great Bay (leaving Zora’s Domain in the big park to focus on freshwater.) There’s potential here, I just don’t have the chops to work it out in detail.
Tarrey Town Suites
Another thing you often find in association with theme parks is themed hotels, extending the experience for multi-day guests. This is especially appropriate for Zelda, because have you ever noticed how many of the games begin with Link literally waking up in the morning? And of course inns and taverns have become a common feature in the games, starting with the Stock Pot Inn in Majora’s Mask. I opted to make that one a restaurant in the theme park because of the name, but there was still plenty of material to inspire a hotel, and I soon realized that Breath of the Wild introduced not only unique inns for each of its fantasy races and communities, but a concept for gathering them all in one location.
Tarrey Town Suites would not be a single hotel, but a complex of buildings, each one themed to a different people—Hylians, Sheikah, Gerudo, Gorons, Rito, and Zora—and offering a different aesthetic and vibe for leisure. Common hotel amenities such as a gym, spa, swimming pool, etc. would be divided among the “inns” appropriately (but available to all guests of the Suites, not just the ones staying in the same inn).
Of all the ideas in this post, this is the one I’ve given the most serious thought; I’m just not quite ready to declare it solid.
Something Something Ancient Technology
The Legend of Zelda is traditionally a medieval(-ish) fantasy series, but some of its more recent installments have leaned hard on the trope of “ancient people were way more technologically advanced than us, actually.” The ancient Sheikah and Zonai tech of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, respectively, leap easily to mind, but there’s also the Ancient Robot civilization in Skyward Sword. It’s enough of a phenomenon that I feel like it should go somewhere in the park—or the resort, as it’s becoming with all these ideas—but how best to manifest this particular theme?
One possibility is...Tarrey Town Suites. In Tears, Tarrey Town is adjacent to the Hudson Construction Site, where the locals retrieve Zonai devices that fall nearby and experiment with them to create powered vehicles. So maybe the hotel activities could include some small rides or other attractions centered around funky fantasy tech.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!

Chasing Winter Adventures in the Great White North: A Vanlife Tale Beyond the Clichés
By Alex Arseneault
When we hear about Vanlife most people see the classic cliché of someone laying on his bed rear doors open with a view on the ocean, right? For me, it’s anything but that.
Tumblr media
My name is Alex Arseneault, I live in Quebec City (Qc), Canada and I consider myself as a ‘’weekender adventurer’’. Experienced Kitesurfer / mountain biker / Snowboarder, I try to make the most of what my region has to offer while still have a normal job. The best tool I have found to make all those outdoors sports so much easy to handle is a Van. I often say to people that our van is our ‘’Mobile Chalet’’ ; it allow us to chase the best (Or worst) conditions, bring all the gear, be home everywhere and be selective on the destination.
Tumblr media
This winter I wanted to go explore further and experience what the alpine backcountry skiing has to offer in our region and because life is better when you are in good company, I wanted to do this trip with my girlfriend & our dog. Meet Cynthia & Gustav! The spot on the radar: The Chic-chocs mountains in Gaspesie. We prepared ourselves with an AST1 Course early in the season and analysis of the approach & terrain of each mountain in the Gaspesie National Park. Thank to the APP Ski Haute-Gaspésie that give so much information’s and you can also use it in GPS mode to find the official skintrails & descent hallway.
There we go. It’s early February, it recently dumped 25 to 40 cm in the mountains, the conditions are at their best. We checked the Avalanches & Weather Forecast, loaded the Van of food, water, gear and hit the road for a 6-hour road trip. The route become quite scenic when we left the Trans-Canadian highway and reach the route 132 along the Saint-Lawrence River. This road is famous during the summer but let’s say it can be quite hazardous during winter. We get excited when we reach the small village of Saint-Anne-des-Monts, which is the entrance of the Gaspesie National Park. The view is insane while we drive on the sinuous road between the mountains. At this point, we have no more signal. No cellphones, no internet, nada. Just us, our small house on wheels and the white mountains.
Tumblr media
We spent two days at a mountain called Mount Lyall. Well parked at the entrance of the skin track, we made our basecamp in the parking thanks to SEPAQ that allows autonomous Camper to stay in the parking for 25$/day. A dry toilet Cabin is at our disposal if required. We had amazing conditions, beautiful weather and even manage to bring Gustav with us for a descent in the treeline. What a nice experience, we felt so grateful to be out there together and enjoy winter at his best. Let’s be honest, winter in the east can somehow be challenging. Trip like this, certainly reconciles us with those ‘’Quebec winters’’. Oh... and speaking of ''challenging'' did I mention that it announces extreme cold during our journey? Well, Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings that covers most of the province with wind chills expected to be between -38 and -42 degrees Celcius. Not worried, we build our van for it, but we knew we were not going to go snowboarding in the backcountry in that temperature, let’s say that it would not be safe or even fun.
So, before this major polar vortex hit us, we spend another day in a mountain called Hog’s back. Same basecamp setup, different terrain. We did two laps on this mountain, but the conditions were a bit more challenging when we reach the Alpine terrain. A crust of ice covered the entire alpine territory which made the terrain unstable and difficult to cross. We then decided to stay in the treeline limit and managed to find some powder again. The highlight of the day was the encounter with a Caribou, a first for us! We were extremely lucky since this species is endangered. What a beautiful creature!
The next stop of our trip is a small village called Murdochville. This old mining town reborn from its ashes and has become the hub for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling in East Canada. We wanted to see this place, somehow sticked in the 80’s by its architecture and see what it has to offer. We parked the Van at the Chic-Chac resort wich has a ‘’Vanlife’’ space and offers access to showers and more... After a well-deserved shower, we spoiled ourselves with dinner at the Chic-Chac headquarter. This place is famous for parties and hosting events!
Tumblr media
The next day we walked the town and finally went for a lap on Mont Porphyre. Being located just outside the northern limit of Murdochville, this mountain allows residents and town visitors to ski directly from town. As the day progresses, temperature drop every hour and strong Northwest wind is picking up. We checked the forecast and there were no chances of doing any outdoors activities for the next two days in this ridiculously cold weather. We ended up driving in a polar vortex blizzard for 6 hours at 25 mph but managed to reach my friend’s house and spend the coldest night still comfortably installed in our van. Let’s just say that the webasto heater has run like never before.
Tumblr media
We spend the cold weather playing card games and drink hot chocolate next to the fireplace at my friend’s house.
I conclude on this quote: ‘’Winter forms our character and brings out our best.’’ Better enjoy it? #Exploremore

Tumblr media
In Japan’s glittering cities, all hustle and light, they can be easy to miss.
With all that sensory assault, who thinks to look down and take notice of something as mundane as a manhole cover? But these are no ordinary bits of civic infrastructure.
In Japan, many manhole covers are works of urban art—elaborate, curious, distinctive, even colorful.
They have become a tourist destination unto themselves and attract a legion of dedicated manhole enthusiasts who travel the country to visit some of the thousands of unique designs.
Japan’s decorated manhole covers—broadly encompassing storm drain, domestic water supply, electrical and other utility access covers—initially took shape as a public relations campaign for sewers.
Beginning in the 1950s, the cast plates featured simple geometric patterns, such as the “Tokyo” and “Nagoya” designs.
Japanese civil servant Yasutake Kameda conceived of the intricate, artistic versions in 1985 to help warm a skeptical rural population to the idea of the costly but necessary modernization of the country’s sewer system.
From these humble and practical beginnings, manhole covers have become a cultural phenomenon.
Tumblr media
Typically, “local manholes” or “design manholes” feature elements special to a particular location: a town emblem, landmark, event, or official bird or flower.
For instance, Takasaki, 60 miles northwest of Tokyo in mountainous Gunma Prefecture, has manhole covers that commemorate the city’s popular summer fireworks festival.
Local mascots (known as yurukyara, such as Fukaya City’s adorable rabbit-deer Fukkachan) and cartoon characters also appear.
In Tokyo’s Tama ward, home of the Sanrio Puroland amusement park, one can find covers featuring the ever-popular Hello Kitty.
Local sports franchises are also represented near the teams’ home arenas and stadiums—such as the well-known colorful depiction of the logo of the Hiroshima Carp baseball team.
While there is some logic to the placement of the covers, particularly those graced with color—usually near a landmark, theme park, or stadium—others appear to have been placed without rhyme or reason.
Indeed, it is not unusual to walk down an otherwise unremarkable side street and spot a special one underfoot.
Tumblr media
The ornate manhole covers are initially carved from aluminum, which is used to make sand molds for casting.
The majority of the designs are selected by local municipalities, in conjunction with manufacturers.
In most cases, the design is just imprinted in the cover, but in some cases, the covers get another touch—colored resins flooded into voids like enamel on jewelry.
Today, an estimated 95 percent of Japan’s 1,718 municipalities across all 47 prefectures now host their own unique covers.
In Osaka, approximately 10 percent of the city’s 180,000 manhole covers feature ornate designs, of which roughly 1,900 get the color treatment.
Typically, a designed manhole cover, which weighs more than 80 pounds, excluding the frame, costs approximately $585—a five percent premium over the cost of a plain cover.
The color, however, is applied carefully by hand and nearly doubles the price of a manhole to more than $900.
Such is the popularity of these little urban treasures that they have a devout, organized following.
There is the industry-led Japan Ground Manhole Association and the fan-based Japanese Society of Manhole Covers, whose website features thousands of photographs submitted by users across Japan, who have snapped everything from large sewer covers to tiny local utility access panels.
Tumblr media
“Manholers,” as they’re known, may travel to distant areas of the country just to photograph covers or collect pencil rubbings known as takuhon.
Trading cards featuring manhole designs are also popular collectors’ items and can command steep prices in online auctions.
One prominent fan is Kei Takebuchi, a popular Tokyo-based singer-songwriter.
Takebuchi traces her fascination with them to the covers of Nagoya, which feature a charming cartoon water strider insect, while she was on tour in 2015.
Since then, she has regularly tweeted photos of manhole covers to her nearly 200,000 followers on social media.
“Every manhole cover design has [a meaning] … it tells me that we can create art with almost anything,” she says, in an interview for this story.
Like many places, Japan is full of people with unusual hobbies or obsessions, but love for the country’s manhole covers has gone mainstream:
a “manhole festival” was held near a major train station in Tokyo last month, featuring trading cards, baked goods, and replica covers from around the country.
Retailer Tokyu Hands ran an extended campaign at its central Shinjuku location, with a range of manhole cover–related goods for sale.
Tumblr media
The affinity for manhole covers also seems to tap in to Japan’s fondness for hobbies that involve lots of domestic travel.
Stamp rallies—featuring rubber stamps at train stations and other landmarks—encourage hobbyists to travel to overlooked or lesser-visited locales to add one more stamp to their collections.
“Rail-fans” similarly scour the country to document or experience a rare train carriage, an unusual station melody, or other rail-related minutia.
It is the same for manholers, with the occasionally far-flung or seemingly random placement of coveted covers—and directions of varying accuracy—adding to the sense of a scavenger hunt.
Indeed, Takebuchi recounts once spending three hours on a bitterly cold day in Kawagoe City in Saitama Prefecture to snap a photo of a particular manhole cover, beautifully designed with an images of Toki no Kane, a historic bell tower.
Similar stories are common currency in manholing circles.
Easy to overlook, but curious and rewarding, Japan’s unique manhole covers are a charming reminder that the mundane can be exciting and that you should never forget to look down.

Tumblr media
This is important as it may have given Steve Smith the idea to create Dalton's character and place him in the show. And because of the closeness to Port Carling and the surrounding area, it would be reasonably geographically accurate in regards to the show as well. It is also the stretch traveled by the cast and crew of the show to the many location shoots in the Muskokas. 11 on this stretch and this has all been apart of GTA culture since the 1940's. There are numerous antique stores along the side of Hwy. It is the route traveled by many cottagers, hikers and vacationers from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) up to Algonquin park, Northern Ontario and the Muskokas. First off, this stretch is a very old stretch of highway and very unique in Ontario (partly in that despite being partly a 4 lane divided freeway style with controlled access, many businesses and homes are directly along the route with direct highway access similar to a standard county road or secondary highway - which is where the location of the store used on the show appeared to be). This would make sense for several reasons. However it is unconfirmed that it was shot at a real antique shop on Ontario Hwy. The actual store used for the filming of these segments is unknown. The front lawn is littered with items in varying states of decay and resembles many rural Ontario antique shops. The store is made up of a small house with a garage type building used to store items. Red frequently would also open with "we're out here on the main highway at Dalton's Everything Store." This would put Dalton's store just outside of the town of Possum Lake, probably in between town and the lodge itself. These segments would start off with a shot of the property which was usually Dalton's buildings surrounded by junk with a rusty "antiques" sign out front. Dalton, being a very close friend of Red, would often have him come over to shoot various segments. He then suggests Parry Sound is close by to the lodge and area which places the lodge within the Port Carling area and further provides proof of Port Carling as the setting of Possum Lake.ĭalton's everything store became a major part of the show starting in the 4th season. As such this could be a play on Steve's humour in also calling the lodge "Chapter 11".Ĭharlie Farquharson in Episode 246 "You've got oil" from 2003 is mentioned to be from Parry Sound and at a lodge meeting suggests that he came to the lodge because he wanted to come see where the smell is coming from. Another belief rests with many fans who have messaged in to mention that "Chapter 11" in the United States also means bankruptcy. One belief is that the 11 is derived from Ontario Highway 11 which is the closest major Highway to Port Carling as Hwy 400 did not extend up near Parry Sound back in 1990 like it currently does today, making Hwy 11 the main express route in the area. This seems like an odd number for a lodge to be named after, as you would assume they would call themselves chapter 1 or were the eleventh chapter to join (There is no mention of other chapters outside of Season 3's Possum Olympics). The Possum Lake chapter is known as chapter 11. Lastly even the Possum Lodge Crest helps give us some answers. Lake Scugog of course is about 2 hours east of Port Carling, making it a reasonable fishing destination for Red and helping to further confirm the location of the real life Possum Lake area. What also helps to confirm this theory is that Red mentions in a Mailbag segment in Season 1's, Hot Water Bottle (Episode 15) that he had gone fishing on Lake Scugog the previous May for pickerel. Incidentally this marina has become known locally as Brackstons' Marina as the owner has enjoyed continuous association with the show. This would include Ranger Gord’s watchtower, some of the Adventures with Bill segments, scenes with Buzz Sherwood and his plane and Glen Brackstons' Marina. This would make sense as many segments of the show were shot on and around Lake Rosseau (Port Carling is surrounded by this lake). Further, this specifically points to the Town of Port Carling to be the real location of the Town of Possum Lake. With some research this would put the location between Barrie and Parry Sound. In realistic terms, this is understood as being situated in cottage country in the Muskoka’s, which is a popular vacation spot for many South Western Ontarians. Possum Lodge and the Possum Lake area is said (according to Red's Facebook page) to be approximately 148 beer stores north of Toronto. It is also situated in the area of Port Asbestos. Possum Lodge is situated on the most ideal spot of Possum Lake to construct a building (as said by red to Kevin Black in a season 5 segment of Ask the Experts) and just outside of the fictional town of Possum Lake.
