MALI (1974-Died November 28th 2023,at 49). Female Asian elephant who lived at Manila Zoo in Manila, Philippines. Born in Sri Lanka, she was given as a gift to First Lady Imelda Marcos by the Sri Lankan government in 1977 and lived at Manila Zoo from then on. For most of her life, she was the only elephant in the Philippines and was a subject of concern for animal welfare advocates. Two of the three baby Asian elephants born in Melbourne Zoo since November 2022. The third one was not yet born when these photos were taken, but it’s been exciting to hear that these two gained a baby sister.

The herd will be moved to Werribee Open Plains Zoo in 2024, giving them more space to roam.

Some news stories, as well as social media users, have been treating this incident as a joke—but it's no laughing matter. Someone, including the elephant, could have been seriously injured or killed. Please don't support circuses that use wild animals, and please support legislation in your community to ban this cruelty. Also, do your research before visiting any facility with elephants, whether it calls itself a zoo, sanctuary, or something else. Elephants are extremely difficult to provide for in captivity, and some facilities, even those that are members of the "gold standard" Association of Zoos and Aquariums, still capture elephants from the wild by calling the captures "rescues", which is an oversimplification at best and a full-blown lie at worst.
