Since you know like 10000000x more about the elven language than me, what are your thoughts about the meaning of the name Halsin?

I like this question, because based in interpretation*, the name does suit him! We're going to use what we have access to in DnD elvish, as Tolkien elvish is a different language entirely and they don't have much overlap.

We'll have to break his name into pieces, and that can be done a variety of different ways, depends what you choose to do. I figured easiest ways are: Hal - sin

Very cut and dry.

or

Ha - l - sin

With the "l" being an adjoining tonal letter. In both cases, "sin" would likely be broken up into a combination of "sy"or "syy" + "-in"

Now the meaning of the pieces:

Hal/Hol: "pale, weak" OR "precious" (Side note: Astarion's "The Pale Elf" might be said "Hal'kesir/quessir" - very close to "Tel'quessir")

Ha: "free, freedom"

Sy: "wild"

Suffix -in: "brother, sister, sibling"

So, directly, it could mean:

Hal-sin = "Pale/weak or precious wild brother"

OR

Ha-l-syin = "Free wild brother" (Which I would phrase more like "Brother of the free wild" or just "Brother of the wilds")

I am inclined to lean towards the latter definition/meaning, as I believe it suits him very well, and aligns with the relationship between him and Thaniel. Naming himself as a sibling of the free wild indicates that his relationship with nature is the forefront of his personality (nature being his very first friend), and indicates a closer connection than others might have. Judging by how Halsin speaks of his connection with Thaniel shaping who he was as a person, this may imply he's named himself after how intertwined it all is to his being. Familial familiar and inseparable.)

(It also sounds more in line of what he would name himself than the alt. - I wouldn't really assign the words "pale" or "weak" as something Halsin would name himself...

...unless he is implying, as he was most likely at the point where he was the last of his kin and the only child left, that he was the "weaker" choice of sibling to be left of their line. So "weak brother of the wild". Pales in comparison. But I feel like that's a stretch.)

FUN BONUS, in elvish, Halsin could have written his name like this:

Or like this (A variant of Espruar, the alphabet of the moon elves that was used to transcribe elvish, used around 1372 DR - since retconned. And since Halsin would have likely learned to write between 1147 DR and 1152 DR, probably not used by him, but possible he learned as he would have been around 120 by then):

*Disclaimer that DnD elvish, at its core, has had a very contradictory lexicon over the many years, and most words are drawn from 2e and 3e materials - elven also has several words for singular things, single letters that can change the meaning of a word or sentence entirely/thrown in to make a word flow better and have no meaning otherwise, and is a very tonal based language in that you could physically be saying one thing, but another elf would hear something entirely different in the intonation. Therefore, everything I write here is interpretive based on the materials we have access to, with a little extra HCing and logical assumption.

While not at the forefront of his mind in the conversation with Karlach he does lament how people seem to dismiss that side of him. Personally I wish Larian kept it more relevant in full release, but alas

The battle was the rat fight in Act 2, but what triggered it was the loss of the haste status cast by Gale (for some reason the game registers the application of the lethargic debuff as friendly fire). Tested it again by hitting him directly with a weapon and the line still pops up. It might be a placeholder until they code in his proper voice lines, but it does feel appropriate.

Oh yeah I had forgotten that banter. I used DanaDuchy's videos on YT as reference, but since the lines are in disparate order a few escaped my memory.^^"

he's difficult to get right! there's a sort of cadence to the way that he speaks that's a bit tricky for me; he's not quite florid like astarion or balalafay but he's still got this tendency to wax poetic...still tinkering with this but i think i like the bones of it

can I just say how heartbreaking it is that Halsin continuously doubts someone could love him? when he says "my heart does not stir lightly... but it does now" he actually has to take a moment to breathe and close his eyes. like he's scared to admit it. like once he opens his eyes, the PC will be gone. even during his romance scene, you have to encourage him that this was what you wanted and that when he goes into wildshape and back into his regular form, PC tells him "it's okay, now come here" like he's TERRIFIED of scaring the PC because he rambles and apologizes profusely.

and when you solo romance him/decide to leave with him post brain, he tells you in the epilogue:

"Yet you chose me", like he STILL can't believe pc could've picked him over ANYONE SIX MONTHS LATER. This man wants to be loved but STRUGGLES to believe it once someone actually loves him and it's so heartbreaking. He's just a gentle giant. So you know how Tara sees Gale as a pet but is also Gale's pet, they have that sort of bond?

That is basically the relationship of Halsin and Thaniel. Thaniel may be stuck in the body of a child but he is still a fey, and fey like to kidnap children. Halsin got lucky with the child he found but like:

Thaniel totally found this random elf kid in the woods and he adopted it, and in turn it adopted him. Also, Going off this (thank you, @autistichalsin you are doing the Oak Father's work with your analysis of Halsin) Halsin's family was sick a great deal of the time.

Just, picture me this: child Halsin would often go off into the woods to try and finds plants and herbs to hopefully help his family. As an offering to the forest to wish him luck he would leave berries and offerings.

One day well wandering, trying to see what he could find Halsin catches a glimpse of a shadows following him in the dark. He follows it into a clearing of sunlight where the shadow stops and turns to him.

It is a child, about his age, covered in roots and the forest.

"May I have your name?" the child asks.

"Halsin Silverbough," he answers with out a moment of hesitation. Which he quickly regrets as he feels a shroud over his mind. Halsin had been warned before of fey in the woods and he had just fallen for one.

"May I have your name?" Halsin asks looking at the boy.

The fey child stares at him. "I shall, if you return to play with me once you have finished collecting your herbs."

"Alright!"

"My name is Thaniel."

Summary: Starting from the rescue from the goblin camp with some minor plot liberties, this story focuses on many missed opportunities for comfort and companionship between Halsin and Tav (and to lesser extent a few others). Halsin is very touch-starved and lonely when we meet him.

So we know Halsin obviously prefers terrestrial animals, but given the choice between flying animals and aquatic ones, which do you think he prefers?

Halsin loves all creatures of Toril, big and small, maggots included.😌

But something in my heart says he prefers flying animals if made to pick between those two options - partially for his fondness for ducks, but there were also just so many birds in the Grove and I feel like he had more chances to be very closely in their company more consistently. He would have loved those Ancient Giant Eagles on top of the Rosymorn Monastery.

I do feel like he would be fascinated by the astronomical biodiversity present in bodies of water - that would, at the very least, pique the academic interest. He strikes me as a swamp, pond and wave pool type of person.
