What do you think Nihal's favourite novel would be, in Turkish and in English (without constraint of time period)? Are there any other Aşk-ı Memnu characters you strongly associate with particular novels?
This is a hard question to answer because I have read like, five novels in my life.
I think Nihal would like We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I see that book’s main character/narrator as Nihal’s id. Kind of Nihal if she were a full-on Gothic “grotesque” instead of a normal girl. I explained it in detail here.
Nihal would also potentially like The Catcher in the Rye. In short I think Nihal would like any novel about problematic, sensitive adolescents.
@focalizer said that Nihal’s story kind of reminded them of Bonjour Tristesse, and a Turkish journalist also likened Nihal’s story to that book. I haven’t read that book yet, but based on what I know about it, I see it.
It is not literature, but I have compared Nihal extensively to the main character of the Japanese film Late Spring and I think she would love that film.
Nihal would like fairy tales and Gothic fiction in general.
I think both Nihal and Bihter would love Rebecca. Bihter would identify with the narrator’s inexperience in being the mistress of a grand house and her being ostracized, whereas Nihal would identify with the narrator’s jealousy.
Bihter would like Anna Karenina, though she would be bored by the Levin parts.
Behlül canonically loves Paul Bourget. I have never read him. But I will if I ever have a podcast episode about the literary references in the book. Other than that Behlül loves comic operettas and I think he would love Shakespeare’s romantic comedies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream as you said.
Mademoiselle de Courton is canonically a fan of Alexander Dumas (probably the father). I don’t know what she would love based on that. It means that she is a Romantic at heart.
I associate everyone involved with Uncle Vanya. Especially Adnan Bey. That’s probably because I had written a paper comparing Uncle Vanya to Aşk-ı Memnu.
Thanks to @princesssarisa, I associate Beşir with The Little Mermaid.
You may have noticed that I didn’t associate anyone with a Turkish novel or play. I don’t know why. I guess I feel like this book and its characters are a bit divorced from the rest of the Turkish literature. Though now that I think about it, Behlül would love Yusuf Atılgan’s Aylak Adam.

- İnsanın bir tutamağı olmalı.
- Anlamadım.
Tutamak sorunu dedim.
Dünyada hepimiz sallantılı, korkuluksuz bir köprüde yürür gibiyiz. Tutunacak bir şey olmadı mı insan yuvarlanır. Kimi zenginliğine tutunur; kimi müdürlüğüne; kimi işine. Ben, toplumdaki değerlerin ikiyüzlülüğünü, sahteliğini, gülünçlüğünü göreli beri, gülünç olmayan tek tutamağı arıyorum: Gerçek sevgiyi!

Sustu. Konuşmak gereksizdi. Bundan sonra kimseye ondan söz etmeyecekti. Biliyordu; anlamazlardı.
