I again remember how much of my family's culture and legacy has been lost in such a short amount of time. The persecution from the Nazis and Soviets had cost the lives of many of my past family members. I don't know much about my maternal Jewish ethnicity because records were destroyed, people died and Belarus became russified. My babushka is the only one who said that our family was Jewish.
All that remains are shadows. And I fear these shadows will fade because my mother's husband is a Russian nationalist.
I don't want to let these shadows fade. Especially right now. Once I am able to, I will formally convert and learn. It's what I truly want.

Moon Phase Legacy Challenge
✿ GEN 1 // New Moon
Meet Misha Solokov! The founder of my Moon Phase Legacy Challenge! I am excited to start my first challenge, so I hope you enjoy it too!
I am using @/quirkyalien challenge, with some changes just to fit better in how I imagine each sim to be
Link to challenge
ok bye!
o(≧∇≦o) story under the cut if you would like to learn Misha's backstory!
Misha's journey was not an easy one; he was constantly labeled as childish, no matter how much he grew up. But he learned to ignore the comments and found solace in his sister Lera's support. The two siblings had a rocky start, but they eventually moved in with their grandmother, Yevgeniya, who became their caregiver and a mentor to Misha. Yev was a formidable woman who had lived a long life full of experiences and had a talent for making delicious medovik cake. Being older, Lera left for America at 20, when Misha was only 16, leaving him with Yev.
Misha cherished his remaining years with his babushka; she taught him how to bake, and there were many sweet bonding moments between them. He loves that he got to have those moments with her. After Yevgeniya's passing, Misha had to deal with papers and preparations to sell the house, but he felt relieved that Yev was no longer suffering. He called his sister to share the news and to ask for her help. His sister Lera was living in San Sequoia and was just entering her legal career. She and her fiancé, Niran, were happy to help him move overseas.
Misha had mixed feelings about leaving his homeland, but he was grateful for his sister's support and was ready to start a new chapter in his life. The journey ahead was uncertain, but Misha knew that he had the strength and resilience to overcome any obstacles that came his way. He was inspired by the memory of his grandmother and her teachings, and he was determined to make her proud.

Ukraine Turns “Boak Bollocks Bloody British Bastard Banksy” Street Art Into Postage Stamp Taunting Vladimir Putin
The official stamp contained a blistering message for the Russian president on the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
Irony is, “Senile Oaf Hypocrite Banksy” never done any mural when Innocent Men, Women and Children of Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Myanmar and Kashmir were being killed in “Illegal Wars” by the Hypocrite US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) & their Puppet Allies, Terrorist Buddhists of Myanmar and Terrorist Indian Hindus of India.

Tumblr media
A mural that anonymous British street artist Banksy painted on a bombed-out building in Ukraine has been transformed into a postage stamp taunting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine’s postal service released the stamp for sale Friday, the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of the country.
In the image, a young judoka slams a grown man, interpreted to represent Putin, to the ground. “FCK PTN” — i.e., “Fuck Putin” — appears in Cyrillic on the lower left of the stamp.
Tumblr media
A Ukrainian border guard's defiant stand against a Russian warship was transformed into an official postage stamp last year. Ukraine's postal service released a stamp with the Banksy artwork on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
“We thought that this exact stamp, this exact painting would be the best representation of what every Ukrainian feels about our enemy,” said postal service head Ihor Smilianskyi, according to Reuters.
Just weeks after the invasion began last year, Ukraine’s postal service released a stamp commemorating a border guard’s defiant rallying cry of “Russian warship, go fuck yourself!”
It’s unclear if Banksy authorized the use of his artwork on the new stamp.
Tumblr media
Representatives for the artist did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
The mural that appears on the stamp is one of seven that Banksy painted in and around the capital, Kyiv, last year.
One of his paintings, depicting a woman in a gas mask, is under police protection after a group of people allegedly tried to steal it. Now, his other artworks in Ukraine are reportedly being monitored around the clock.
In December, Banksy said he’d created a limited-edition print to raise money for Legacy of War Foundation to support people caught up in the conflict. The artist also said he used one of the foundation’s ambulances to escape an “angry babushka” who found him painting on her building.
Tumblr media
After requesting that people register their interest in buying one of the just 50 prints, the charity received thousands of “hostile attacks” from internet users linked to Russian locations, it said. It is now processing the 1 million registrations.
Back in England, meanwhile, Banksy on Valentine’s Day confirmed he was behind a commentary on domestic violence in Margate. Authorities later removed moving parts of the installation over safety fears.

Banksy Reveals Very Close Call With Angry Babushka In Ukraine
Banksy Reveals Very Close Call With Angry Babushka In Ukraine
Banksy claimed he had a close call with “an angry babushka” while painting on bombed-out buildings in Ukraine as he released a new limited edition print to raise money for a charity providing support to civilians affected by Russia’s invasion, which began in February. The Legacy Of War Foundation lent the anonymous street artist one of its ambulances to work from when he painted multiple murals…

Babushka Legacy Challenge
Are you looking for a legacy challenge that’s fast-paced so you hopefully won’t get burned-out after 3 or 4 generations? Do you like having goals to achieve during your legacy? Do you enjoy ruining your sims’ lives? Have you been missing some quality challenges? Then this is the challenge to quench your challenge-wanting thirst!
Not sure what a babushka is? That’s okay because I’m about to tell you... A babushka is an old woman or grandmother in Poland and Russia. The Sims 4 isn’t set in Poland or Russia, but we’re still gonna use that term because it’s kinda fun and fresh.
“ThE RUleS”
The rules are kind of flexible, but some of them are for your own good so you should probably follow them.
It’s not required for your sims to complete aspirations and get to the top of their career ladder, but it is specified in some generations if they do need to complete it.
Keep the game on normal lifespan.
Only use money cheats for your first house by using freerealestate. Don’t cheat for money after that.
You don’t have to live in any specific places unless it is specified in the generation.
This is a fast-paced legacy, but it is still 10 generations, so you won’t finish too fast, but you will be able to keep going without getting bored.
Make sure that your game doesn’t become a game over. The sims age up early into elders, so make sure there is at least a teen or older in the household upon the elders’ death. Some generations have kids really late so just be wary!
If you play this challenge, please post it with the tag #babushkalegacy so I can see!
_____________
This challenge was originally created in my brain randomly on a boring summer afternoon, so hopefully it’s not too CRAZY for all you sims lovers! :)

Aspiration - Super Parent
Hobbies - Guitar, Comedy

Devote your elderly life to taking care of your kid(s)
Attempt mastering skills/aspiration/career (BUT it’s not necessary)
Generation Two: The Indecisive Babushka

Captain America’s Legacy
Summary: When Katerina Rogers watches as the flags smashers cause further mayhem, she knows she needs to come out of hiding and go help Sam and Bucky take them down, all while dealing with the fact that the United States government replaced her dad with some idiot as Captain America.
Meet Katerina (Katy) Rogers, the daughter of Natasha and Steve. Will take place during the falcon and the winter solider with some flashbacks to black widow and civil war. Also Tony is alive in this timeline, Steve did that snap instead, Natasha still died getting the soul stone.
Tumblr media
Chapter One Captain Americas Legacy
Sitting on the bed in her hotel room in Paris, Katy looked up to the tv and watched as Sam Wilson gave away her dad’s legacy to some museum. How could he when her father had chosen him to replace him while he lay there dying, anger and grief swelled up in her as she angerly switched off the tv.
It had been six months since she lost both of her parents within hours of each other and it hadn’t gotten any easier, she was all alone with her grief. Wanda was off somewhere trying to get through her own trauma and grief, Clint was taking time to be with his family again, thinking of him getting to be with them again made it easier to handle her mama’s sacrifice. It hurt too much to be around her mama’s family, they all reminded her too much of her mama. Tossing and turning in bed she found it difficult to sleep when she knew what awaited once she did manage to go unconscious for a few tortured hours.
Sometime around six and five am she managed to fall into a semiconscious slumber, until her alarm went of at noon. Rolling over to turn it off and turn back into her pillow to get a little bit more rest. Soon she would have to get up and leave. Never stay in one place too long, that was her motto, the constant moving helped to keep her mind distracted.
About two weeks later she was strolling through the streets of London when she spotted the news paper stand. On the front cover it read “Cap is Back” below it described how John Walker was the new Captain America. Unable to read anymore she back away and ran back to her hotel room. Flipping on the tv to try and forget what she had just seen, she looked up to see the man in question having a interview on Good Morning America. She felt sick to her stomach, scoffing she sat down to see just who this Walker guy was.
“It’s the greatest honor of my life um, but I I’m just a little shocked how’d a guy like me end up here?”
Ugg, his obvious self-depreciation was revolting, as if. She could tell he was trying to hard to emulate that humble hero, trying to emulate her dad. After watching a few more minutes to get a better understanding she decided she had enough and flipped the channel. In its stead a news report about the flag smashers was playing.
Apparently they were escalating and even caused a panic and injuries at a robbery. Watching the news footage, she noticed that one of the masked smashers had apparent super strength. That was news to her, to her knowledge the only ones with the super soldier serum that was still alive was, her dedushka(grandpa), all the former black widows had a form of the serum including Yelena and her babushka(grandma), Bucky, and herself. Though her was from her parents passing on their enhanced genetic codes.
Letting out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding in, she looked down to her hands. This whole situation was getting out of hand and obviously the GNC couldn’t handle. She knew she couldn’t hide out anymore, not when people were getting hurt. It was time to go back home and follow in her parents’ footsteps.
Two hours later she was on a plane, heading back to the states.
Hopping out of her uber she thanked the driver and closed the door. Now she only had to find Sam and get to the bottom of the situation. According to his phone he shouldn’t be too far off. Not too far up ahead she spotted him with Bucky, having one of their usual banters no doubt. Though the closer she got to them she noticed Bucky a bit more. He had cut his hair, and hot damn if it did not suit him. “Fuck me” she muttered to herself before noticing and blushing.
You have got to be kidding me when did she find herself thirsting after him. Okay be cool she thought to herself, but damn he really was hot.
“Well I don’t trust redwing” Bucky said to Sam and he followed after him.
“You don’t have to trust redwing, but I’m gonna go see if he’s right. Because I have a feeling they might be part of the big three.” Sam replied back slightly annoyed by the other man.
Hold up, the big three? What the hell is that? Apparently Bucky didn’t know either because he asked Sam “What big three?”
Looking at him incredulously he replied “ the big three, androids, aliens, and wizards”
Shaking his head Bucky said “that’s not a thing’
“Since when has that been a thing?” Katy interrupted with genuine interest.
Both men looked over in shock, they hadn’t expected to see her. Not after she took after and disappeared.
Bucky did a double glance real quick, she seemed different somehow.
“Where have you been all this time? We looked everywhere for you.” Sam said with a worried expression. Giving them a tight-lipped smile, she looked away towards the skyline and then turned back to them. “Oh, you know, touring Europe.” Grimacing she continued “ I just, couldn’t face it. It was easier to disappear, but when I noticed all the trouble the flag smashers were causing and the GNC inability to do anything, I decided it was time to come back.”
“Are you doing any better?” Sam asked. “Of course, others wise I wouldn’t be here. Any way what the hell is the big three? I’ve never heard of that..”
Rolling his eyes Sam, looked to Bucky and then back to Katy. “ You know the big three, anytime we fight anyone it one of those three.”
“So who are you fighting now? Gandalf?” Bucky replied back sarcastically.
Taking a moment to register what he said Sam responded back incredulously “ uhh, how do you know about Gandalf?”
“ I read the hobbit, in 1937 when it first came out”
“So you see my point”
“oh, I love the hobbit. I read it back in fifth grade” Katy said to aloud, glancing at the both of them she was surprised to see they looked shocked at her admission. “What, it’s a good book.”
Looking back to Sam Bucky replied “No I don’t, there are no wizards”
“Doctor Strange” Sam said to which Bucky quickly replied “Is a sorcerer”
“ahh, ha ha. A sorcerer is a wizard without the pointy hat.” Sam said smiling in triumph.
“No, a wizard does magic with a wand or stick, a sorcerer used their hands” Katy interview with her commentary.
“Same difference” Sam looked over to her.
“Any ways’ he went on “they use brute strength, just like you guys and are incredibly annoying like the guy in front of me with a staring problem” With that he walked away to the plane with Katy and Bucky hot on his heels.
“I’m coming with you” Bucky and Katy said in unison to Sam.
“No you’re not”
“Uh, yeah we are. I’m not just going to sit back while I could be doing something to help people. Okay so I am going with you rather you like it or not. She said with a snarky tone, looking for Bucky to back her up. He merely nodded to her and followed Sam into the plane.
“Fine you and Cyborg can come with, just don’t annoy me” Rolling his eyes Sam couldn’t help but think how much she reminded him of Steve, always sure of what they were doing.
A few hours later sitting on the plane Bucky and Sam were having some kind of stare off. Looking between the two of them she couldn’t believe it. Seriously they were to grown ass men behaving like teenagers, her partners on this mission. Joy. Standing Bucky asked, “So what’s our plan?” Sam merely looked over to him and went back to putting in his earpiece and handing one over to her.
“Great, so no plan” Bucky said while sitting back down.
Torres interrupted with “Thirty seconds”
“Enjoy your ride Buck and Kat”
“Nah you can’t call me that”
“Why not, that’s what Steve called you”, shooting back Bucky said “Steve knew me longer, and Steve had a plan”
“Fifteen seconds to drop”
“I have a plan”
“Really? What is it?” he said while spreading his arms out walking toward Sam and Torres. Following after them Katy, stepped closer to Bucky.
Sam just jumped out the window, rather than replying back and dealing with those two.
Looking over to Torres Bucky asked “Great, where is the chute?”
“Were 200 hundred feet. It’s too low for a chute”
Huffing, Katy looked to Torres and asked, “Do you have some rope?”
“I don’t need it anyway” Bucky said while walking over to the open doorway and ripping off his sleeve with the metal arm.
“Yes we have some rope, why exactly” Torres questioned, looking over at Katy.
“Perfect, I can use that to jump out. Thank you”
Looking back to Bucky he replied, “You sure about that?”
“Yeah”, with that he jumped straight out.
Walking back over with the rope he handed it to her and watched as she wrapped it around herself and then to the plane, “have a nice flight” Without she dove right out of the plane and did a flip while holding out to the rope and scaling down to the ground. After fifteen seconds she let go and free fell another fifty feet before lading and doing her iconic superhero pose.
Looking over a few dozen feet, she noticed Bucky laying on the ground trying to catch his breath. Letting out a chuckle and smiling she walked over to him to make sure he was okay.
Standing over him she put her hands on her hips and looked down while asking “Are you okay? That looked like it hurt”
Suddenly Sam interrupted with mirth “I have all of that on camera, you know that right”
Then redwing flew over to them, Bucky merely looked over to her and said “Yeah, im fine. How are you?” and then looking over to redwing hovering above them he grunted “ Get out of my face, Sam or I’ll break it.”
In the comms he just simply said “okay, head north”
Sticking her hand out to him she offered to help him up. Reaching to take her hand with her flesh one she pulled him up, and then quickly took a step back flustered at his proximity, “come on lets go” with that she went north.
Walking into the abandoned building Bucky and Katy looked around, while walking around redwing swooped right by Bucky prompting him to swat at it while she chuckled, and Sam said “don’t hurt him”
While they walked up to Sam he called out “You’re doing that staring thing again”, looking down to his wrist he continued “They’re in there.”’
“Where’s they guy?” Bucky asked, “I don’t know, I think they’re smuggling weapons, though.”
“Well, I think you could be right”
“hmm,” was all Sam said.
“Well, I think we should do something about it rather than just standing here and bantering about it” Katy called out with a smirk and then walked closer to get a better look to see what the two guys were doing.
Looking over to her Bucky had a light smile reach his eyes at her quip, while Sam just laughed. “There’s only one way to find out, I see a clear path. I say we take it.”
“We’re not assassins”
Grimacing as his reply Katy looked over her shoulder and then looked back.
“I’ll see you inside or not.” Bucky replied in his deep baritone voice staring out Sam, then walking over to Katy.
“Hey, come on man. I’m just messing with you. Come back” smiling Sam trailed after them.
With Bucky leading they way she trailed behind him.
“Look at you. All stealthy.” Chuckling Sam continues through the comms “all stealthy. A little time in Wakanda and you come out White Panther”
“It’s actually White Wolf”
“Huh”
“All right, I’m inside therefore, way ahead of you.” Crouching down her looks over to Katy and then back to the scene in front of them. “It’s not great, but very doable with Katy and I”
Feeling a presence creeping up behind her she looks back to see Sam stealthy creeping up behind them.
“huh”, Bucky said in confusion”, then went on in a sarcastic tone “Hello. How are you?”
“Good. What did I miss?”
“Nothing”
Huffing out she replied between them “Boys, can we get back to the mission? Kind of important here..”
“Alright let’s go” Bucky replied
“No wait.” Sam said.
“I got a vibranium arm. I can take them”
Something felt off about this, it looked almost too easy, before she could say anything Sam quickly responded “And I can fly, Katy can take them down with hand-to-hand combat. Who gives a shit? Wait.” “I wanna see where they’re going”
“Now wait a minute, I can do more than that” she said offended.
“There’s two people”
“You only see two?, what about you Kat?”
“That’s what I saw. Bucky responded while looking over to her.
“I only see two, but I..” She stops to take a break and then looks at them unsteadily. “I can sense more, if that makes sense.”
Both men are surprised by this and look at her questioningly.
Sighing she looks to them and the says “About seven years ago I was taken by the red room, and they experimented on me, apparently they saw an opportunity with my already enhanced DNA. From that I’ve been able to sense things, kind of like a sixth sense. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but it’s all I got.” Unable to elaborate anymore she looks away and hopes they will be satisfied with that answer.
Noticing her apprehension, they let it go for now and focus back on the mission. Bucky has a straight face, yet there’s concern there and a bit of understanding.
“Let me see what redwing sees.” Looking down at his wrist Sam points of the multiple body heat signatures redwing is picking up.
Grateful they let it go, she looks over to see that there appears to be five people.
How many people you see now? One, two…. Oh, here it comes again. Four, five. Yeah five.” Sam continues while Bucky just snaps “fine”
“Yeah.”
“So they’re strong whatever. All right lets go.”
“No, no wait. Shit”
Watching as the people look up from the noise, the trio held still trying not to be noticed. Finally, they looked on and continued their tasks.
“Alright, lets move” A woman call out to the other people. Waiting for them to be out of sight the three follows after . Looking at his wrist Sam notices that one of the trucks has an eight person in it. “I think they have a hostage he remarks.”
With that Bucky and Katy run off towards the truck while Sam flies towards it.
Running up the truck Bucky jumps up onto the back and opens the door climbing in, with Katy hot on his wheels. Walking in further he begins to look around, trying to find the hostage. Looking around they notices the crate and the contents, “They’re stealing medicine. Vaccines”
Looking up she notices a young woman poke her head out from one the crates, she looks scared and slightly hopeful. Alarm bells are going off in Katy’s head, but before she can do anything Bucky is saying hi and getting himself jacked out of the truck.
“Oh shit” she remarks before kicking out the woman and then turning to Bucky to see him being pulled up onto the car truck by two guys. Jumping up onto the other truck she goes to help him out with the other woman right on her heels. Turing around she blocks a swing from the red head and take a step back raising her arms and falling into a defense position.
Thrusting her foot forward she kicks out at the woman and hit her gut before she can even react. Thanks to her mom she has the quicker reflexes and quickly continues on her attack, turning to check on Bucky.
In her distraction the other woman get a kicks in and sends her flying back before Bucky’s feet, redwing then comes soaring in taking shots. The woman jumps up and catches it and then uses her knee to break it in half.
While on her back Katy quickly jumps back up landing with her one foot tucked in a kneeling position and the other in front while her hands are touching the floor.
Bucky looks up and happily says “I always wanted to do that.”
Sam’s going to be pissed she thought with a smirk and then turned and lashed out at the guys holding onto Bucky, sending them stumbling away. Ordinary her kicks would have wiped them out, but with the serum the just took a few steps back. Annoyed by this she turned around to see Sam swooping down and kicking the woman.
Ha she thought, I knew it.
While Sam was engaging in combat with the woman Bucky yelled out “Good of you to join the fight Sam” Quickly Bucky and she took on the other two men. In the meantime, the fight was joined by the other truck rolling up and two other men joining.
Sam was kicked onto to other truck leaving Katy to run up to the other guys and quickly jump up towards them, using her body as leverage she wraps her thighs around one of the guys and uses the momentum to throw him down, quickly raising her wrist she shoots out one of her widow’s bites from her gauntlet. It was a gift from her mother for her eighteenth birthday.
To her dismay it didn’t take him down for long, “Damn super soldiers” She muttered to herself.
Suddenly one of the men fighting Sam was hit by her father’s shield, looking up she noticed a helicopter with that Walker idiot jumping out. Rolling her eyes, she went on fighting.
Before she knows it the shield is flying around nocking the flag smashers down, while another mans jumps down on a rope. Great another idiot to contend with, who the hell is he supposed to be?
“Sam. John Walker, Captain America.”
“Lemar Hoskins”
Walker continues “Looks like you guys can use some help”
The two men say, responding to the questioning looks.
Ugg she thinks he looks way to proud to be brandishing that shield around. Dark thoughts quickly take over her mind, the very sight of him enrages her. Using that anger she quickly takes out her opponent.
The woman quickly makes her way up the Walker and Hoskins, Walker goes to hit her with the shield and then throws it out the other guys, while it soars back Bucky catches it with ease, handing it over to Walker reluctantly.
Witnessing the whole thing, the only thing that comes to mind to Katy was “Damn, that was hot” While slightly panting, blushing and hoping no one notices she looks towards the other two.
The fighting continues for a few more minutes before Bucky is pushed off the truck, faltering at the sight she receives a swift hit to the gut, quickly focusing back on the task at hand she continues to fight. Worried over Bucky still she notices Sam swoop in and them him and Bucky tumble away onto the field. With her head turned away her opponent kicks her off the truck sending her over in the direction the other two went.
Tumbling onto the ground below her and then rolling onto the grass, she berates herself for allowing herself to get distracted enough to get her ass handed to her. She was better than this, trained by a former red room assassin and a freaking super soldier since she was her girl.
Standing up she notices Sam and Bucky walking towards her.
“Well, that went horrible. We got a asses handed to us back there. I mean we are professional’s right? Because after that it seems like were amateurs. It’s embarrassing”
“Yeah, we sure did. Although I might add they were all super soldiers” Sam tuned in while him and Bucky walked off onto the road following after her.
“Well, this should be a fun walk back” Bucky said aloud looking straight ahead. Are you okay doll?” He said looking towards her.
Stuttering in her steps at the name, she quickly collected herself and responded with a smile “Never better, always love it when I take a tumble off a moving semi-truck, in the middle of nowhere.”
“Only twenty more miles to go of this” Sam intoned.

if I was doing superlatives, this one wins for most colourful. look at that sunset wedding! I love it so much. (but not enough to have taken more screenshots, thanks past me.)
eventually, Addie & Desi were able to afford an actual house. I moved them into the spice district which is the BEST one.
oh, fun fact: prior to this I tried playing a legacy that started in San Myshuno. I worked so hard to get them to the uptown district, only to realise it was boring, lifeless, and ugly on top of being expensive. also, it was the most graphically glitched: if I zoomed out far enough, the water level would rise and “flood” San Myshuno below. so. I learned from that mistake.
uhhh I really ran out of pictures around this time, because I started experiencing a glitch where adult sims revert to the base ea textures instead of the default skin I use and it would never fix itself. so I stopped taking pictures when this happened because it was so jarring. seriously. base skin textures are so bad. has anyone else ever encountered this glitch?
anyway! they had their first and only kid, who was named Jericho. I didn’t like Jericho. he was annoying and had no personality. I almost gave up on this save at this point but that’d be a disservice to everyone that came before him who I loved very much so I kept on keeping on.
unfortunately.

amber, eminence, ivory? these are cute!
amber: what is the oldest thing you own?
When I got married, Mom clearly started thinking about Legacies and Heirlooms in a way she never had before and gave us a pair of beautiful silver spoons. They are dated 1896 and we no longer know who the monogrammed “A” is for. Last names on that side were Berenfeld, Lebedev, Stillman, and Levinson, so we have no idea. Lexie calls them the Holocaust Spoons because they’ve made it through a dozen hells, across borders and war zones. I need to confirm with my mom, but these may have been some of the things she sewed into the lining of her clothes when she flew out of the pre-Fall Soviet Union in 1989 to marry my dad. (Regardless of if you had a visa, if you had items of value on you they could be confiscated under the guise of you “removing Russian cultural treasures” from the country. Also customs agents just took things.)

eminence: what type of weather is your favorite?
I love sunshowers - where it’s raining while the sun is still out! My babushka would call them грибной дождь, or “mushroom rain”, because it’s ideal weather for them to grow. Sunshowers make me feel giddy and super nostalgic for my childhood. Not to mention the high chance of rainbows!

ivory: if you could be any mythological creature, which would you choose?
I’ve always had a big fondness for the Lamassu, a Babylonian being with a human head, the body of a bull or a lion, and bird wings. They look goofy as hell and appear oddly satisfied in a way that only someone with the kicking powers of a bull with a FLYING START can have. Plus their hats are nice.

Babushka Antiques has used up all the dolls hidden in the main doll and called it a day. Owner Sonia Alex started her antique legacy at Barritz, 883 Mt Eden Rd. After 11 years there, Sonia purchased her current home at 156 Garnet Rd in 1990. The front part was already a shop so she turned it into Babushka Antiques. I have borrowed many props from Babushka for food shoots and along the way acquired a collection of old chinaware that I liked. With Sonia turning the Biblical 4 score in July this year, it’s was time to bring down the curtain on an antique institution. The Closing Down Sale stared last May 2018 and Saturday was the final day of trading. I purchased two plates, one an embroidered pattern “Victorian” made by Royal Winton. The other was Yosemite Valley, California: “The Bridal Veil” Fall, made by Adams of England. The back of this plate is beautifully marked with exquisite typography. My final purchases from Babushka will remind me of what the shop stood for. Sonia will continue living at the back, surrounded by more antiques. I doubt she will be like Miss Havisham as she has divested quite a lot of her collection. What she has left is what she can’t bear to part with and that is still a formidable number. In a few months time, a chemist will morph from this spot. As they say, it’s the end of a distinctive collectable era. Sonia will still drip feed items on Trade Me or Marketplace. The shop stock is being sold at auction. #babushkaantiques #garnetroad #closingdown #endofanera #antiques #chinaware (at Babushka Antiques) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx_oREYJ2SC/?igshid=1kqjbd2f4b2aa

The Daughter of Isabel Rochev
So I posted a crazy theory yesterday and I was super excited by the response to it. I also got some feedback from @memcjo and @fallingmeleth saying they would love to read a fic about it, so here you go!
Read on AO3
or below:
The Daughter of Isabel Rochev
This couldn’t be happening.
It was impossible. She had been careful, methodically so. Yes, she’d been young and naive, but she had a good head on her shoulders and she knew the importance of birth control. She wasn’t an idiot. She had fallen in love.
Perhaps that was her downfall looking back, the chip in her armor, her Achilles heel. If she had just kept feelings out of it, handled sex like a business transaction, then she wouldn’t be in this mess.
She stares at the white plastic stick on the counter as the seconds tick down, even though she already knows what it’s going to say. It’s going to match the other two tests hastily purchased on the way home from work.
There were a thousand reasons why she shouldn’t have done it - fallen in love with him, that is. The first of which was the tiny fact that he was married, with children. But that had been inconsequential as soon as they had gotten to know each other. He was charismatic and charming. He had a way of looking at her as though she was the only person in a room who mattered. It was enough to melt a young girl’s heart.
But then there was also his position. He was respected, adored by all, and he had wanted her. Out of the hundreds of people he saw and interacted with daily, he would carve out time just for her, to make her feel special.
She twists to stare out the window of the cramped bathroom, no longer able to stare at the pregnancy test.
Yes, Robert had adored her. He’d said he would do anything, had promised to leave his wife, but then that call came in. They’d been in the goddamned airport, baggage in hand. It was all part of the plan: force Moira’s hand to file for divorce. If she tried to enforce the pre-nup, then they had the ammo they needed to stay her hand. After all, she was the one who had a child out of wedlock. Robert had at least been courteous enough not to do that.
So when he got the call about Thea’s accident, she thought he would stay with her, would tell Moira to call Malcolm instead. She was so foolishly confident in that moment until his blue worried eyes had met hers.
I have to go.
She had thought a hand would be enough to keep him by her side, and that same hand curls into a fist as the words echo in her head as vividly as if they had flown from her mouth. Robert, you can’t do this! If you go back now, you’ll always be looking back.
I don’t have a choice, Isabel. I have to go to her. But as soon as I can, I will come get you, and we can run away.
She’s not even your daughter. Those had been the wrong words to say. She’d known as soon as they had escaped. She might not have been biologically his – and she had listened to him complain about Moira’s infidelity more than once – but Thea Queen still managed to be Daddy’s Little Girl, more important to him than the woman he claimed to love.
Don’t say that. Thea may not be mine by blood, but she’s still my daughter. I will find you when I can.
It was one too many empty promises for her. He was there, on the cusp of changing his whole life, and he was changing his mind. She didn’t want someone who couldn’t give her everything in return.
Somehow, he had convinced her to stay, to wait for him. She’d gone back to her apartment and wallowed, waited for him like the same lovesick girl she was. She’d pined.
She’d waited for him to come, waited all weekend. Then on Monday, without anything better to do, she had returned to her internship at Queen Consolidated, only to be turned away at the door without a single explanation.
Enraged, she’d turned around and driven to Queen Mansion, without a plan, without any purpose other than to force Robert to acknowledge her, to acknowledge her love as more than just some passing fancy.
Moira had put her in her place, as soon as Isabel walked through the front door. Making it to the mansion had been unexpected to say the least. She shouldn’t have been surprised to be confronted by Moira Queen, but she had been.
Robert will never leave his family, least of all for a tramp like you. You’re going to leave this city, leave this state, and never bother my family again.
She hadn’t left immediately, had struggled to find her own job, but Moira had successfully blacklisted her from every decent company in Starling and Robert hadn’t answered her call.
Her heart had shattered a little more with every step she took away, but now here she was making a new name for herself.
Beep. Beep. Beepbeep.
Blindly, she reaches out and cuts off the time, wiping stray tears from her cheeks. She takes one shaky breath. Another. And another until they no longer come out stilted. That was a month and a half ago. A month and a half since she swore she wouldn’t care if he walked away. She vowed to harden her heart, to never let a man break her that way again.
But she hadn’t expected this, hadn’t expected a child.
She picks up the last pregnancy test, staring at the pink plus sign. She’ll have to go to the doctor to confirm it, but she already knows it’s the truth. She’s had morning sickness, aches, fatigue.
She could go running back to Robert, could reach out, tell him about his child. But Moira’s kept him close since that night. She’s seen the Starling City news, the two of them with their idyllic family. It made her sick to look at them, to witness the lies perpetuated by just calling them a family unit.
He would be happy, she thinks, if he were here, if he would ever listen to her. But he’s not and she refuses to go back to him.
Isabel Rochev throws the text into the garbage and strides into the kitchen to grab a fresh glass of water. She has a job here, at Stellmor International, a decent one. It won’t be easy, but she thinks she can do this, that she can climb the ranks here, fight her way to the top and then go back to Starling and throw everything back in Moira’s face.
Her hand comes to rest over her abdomen, where a child is growing. Yes, she’ll go back to Starling and reclaim Queen Consolidated for her and her child.
One day.
She names her daughter Evelyn, and they survive on their own perfectly fine. She raises her in Russia, using her native language to her advantage while still teaching her daughter English at home. She finds men to help keep them in money, men she can use and dispose as necessary. Her daughter is of paramount importance. She does whatever she needs to do to protect her daughter, and she keeps her eyes on Queen Consolidated and the legacy that should be her
Then in 2007 the sinking of the Queen’s Gambit make international news.
Evelyn is eight years old and Isabel decides the time is right to make her first move.
She leaves Evelyn in the care of her foster sister in Coast City and continues on to Starling, walking right into Queen Consolidated. She’s eight years older and what feels like a century wiser. She’s no longer cowed by the great and terrible Moira Queen. She’s confident and powerful.
But in that boardroom, she still feels small. Moira Queen has too many allies, too many connections. She knows long before the vote that she’s not going to get her foot in the door, even with her Stellmor recommendations and her former status as Robert’s golden girl.
If she brings in Evelyn, she might have a chance of her daughter getting something, through lengthy custody battles and court cases. But it won’t give her control of Queen Consolidated, won’t give her daughter anything more than a tarnished legacy.
So she refuses to do it. She walks out head held high, no position in the company but a solid payout and several concessions on the part of Moira Queen to get her to keep quiet about her affair and about Thea’s true parentage.
It wasn’t ideal, but she had walked in and stood on equal ground as the Ice Queen. That was a win in her books. Only a battle won, but a win all the same.
“What do you mean, I have to stay here, Mama?”
Isabel crouched in front of her daughter. Her daughter has her same brown hair, the same brown eyes, there’s very little but the shape of her face that resembles Robert. Her sparkly purple leotard draws attention from her quivering lower lip. “You have to stay here, babushka, so your auntie and uncle can watch over you. The schools are better here. You will be happier.”
“But Mama-“
“Shhhhh, honey.” Isabel wipes away her tears gently. It’s about the only thing she does gently these days. “Remember everything I taught you. Learn as much as you can, as quick as you can. Never dumb yourself down for a man. You are strong, intelligent, and beautiful. I will visit when I can. Know that Mama loves you.”
It hurts to say goodbye. Her daughter is the only one who holds her heart now. She’s leaving her heart behind her as she flies back across the sea to Russia and Stellmor.
She needs to work on her next plan.
“Isabel Rochev?”
She’s clicks out of the open window on her screen, shoving down a scowl at the headlines of a recently returned Oliver Queen. The American headlines with that family were always so gauche, predictably terrible. She looks up at her office door, where her assistant is supposed to stop any unwanted visitors. The man in the doorway is a giant. A well-dressed giant, but the rugged man was definitely used to much more sun than they usually got in Russia.
“And who are you?” She doesn’t have time for visitors, not now, not when she still has plans to formulate, plans that are in jeopardy thanks to a newly returned Oliver Queen.
“Ms. Rochev, my name is Slade Wilson, and I believe we can help each other.”
He steps in the room with a confidence Isabel has seen in soldiers, like a CEO who knows he’s in control of the entire room the moment he enters it. It’s an admirable quality, but as a woman in a man’s world, it irks Isabel. A woman rarely gains instantaneous respect like that, especially when a man is in the room.
But she is intrigued.
“What would that be, Mister Wilson?”
He places a hand on a chair. “May I sit?”
She nods. “Get to the point, Mr. Wilson. I’m a busy woman.”
“Then I’ll get right to it. You want Queen Consolidated.”
He has her full attention. She turns in her seat to face him more fully. “I’m listening.”
“You made a play for it 2007, but you couldn’t get the support. I can help you get that.”
She clasps her hands in front of her with a bland smile. They’re pretty words, meant to and she doesn’t trust them. “And what’s in it for you?”
“Revenge.”
Isabel freezes at the word, tilting her head in interest. His voice is dead and cold. It’s definitely not anything close to kind.
“Oliver Queen killed the woman I loved, and in return I swore to destroy him. I don’t care about the company or why you want it. I just need your help to bring him down.”
She scoffs. “I’ve never met the man. I can’t imagine I’d be of much help.”
“Ah, but you knew his father, and based on the payout from Moira Queen, I’m willing to bet you know a whole batch of Queen family secrets, secrets I can use.” He smiles. It might have been charming if not for the cold look in his one functioning eye.
Isabel contemplates him. “I might have one or two.”
“Then do we have an agreement?” He holds out a giant paw of a hand, looking her directly in the eyes. He looks at her with respect, not as a tool. Without her tricks of speaking softly so the other person had to lean forward to listen, of remaining stoic and aloof. She had to do it to get where she was. But this partnership…this could work.
“Mama?”
Isabel grins as she turns toward the voice, happy to finally have the chance to visit her in person.  “It’s me, Evie.” The words are strained as her daughter walks tentatively forward. Her eyes dart to the shadowy figure behind Isabel, rightfully cautious.
Evelyn pulls her braid over her shoulder, folding her arms across her chest to keep off early morning chill. “I didn’t know you were coming. Aunt Jess says you’re not a fan of the outdoors.”
Isabel’s upper lips curl up as she takes in the brightly colored tents. No, she doesn’t like camping. In fact, she kind of hates it, but it’s a necessary evil in this current situation. “Camping teaches survival skills.”
Evelyn laughs caustically. “Yeah, that’s what Aunt Jess and Uncle Mike say, but I’ve yet to find a time when learning to catch fish in a stream comes in handy.”
From the shadows comes a low rumble, a chuckle. “You’d be surprised, kid.”
“And who are you?”
Part of Isabel admires her daughter’s fearless attitude, the other part is just glad she’s not the one raising her. Her daughter is fierce, tenacious, stubborn. Resilient.
“Evelyn, this is Slade Wilson. Mr. Wilson, my daughter, Evelyn Sharp.”
There’s a silent stare-down of sorts between the two, dark on Evelyn’s side and amused on Slade’s. Isabel steps closer to her daughter to get her attention.
“Babushka, Slade and I are going to do something, something dangerous, and we need to be prepared.” Evelyn frowns at her. “This is going to be dangerous. Not just to us, but to you. So we’re going to spend the next month training.”
She frowns. “Training? Training for what?”
“Listen, kid,” Slade interrupts, stepping into the sunlight. “Your mother and I are going up against a dangerous enemy. We both agreed you should be prepared as well.”
“No offense, buckaroo, but I’m not interested.”
A line has been crossed, an insult delivered, and Slade Wilson is not the forgiving type. She’s almost certain he’ll reach for the sword strapped across his back, but instead he laughs.
“I like you, kid. I think you and I are going to get along just fine.
Evelyn keeps one eye on the news as her mother stands on the stage in front of the Queen Consolidated sign. Just months ago the city was half destroyed. Slade and her mother didn’t elaborate their plans, not to her anyway. All her mother said was that she was going this for her. For her legacy, so that she could take over the company her father built.
And hadn’t that come as a shock. Robert Queen, deceased billionaire, was her father, a man she had always wondered about and would now never get to meet. With that came the revelation that she had siblings...well, one half sibling. Apparently her and Thea Queen didn’t actually share any DNA.
“Don’t worry about it, kid. Your mother’s going to be fine.”
Evelyn drops her half-eaten burger on her plate and turns to face Slade. “How can you be so sure?”
He laughs, loud and full. “Because she’s a warrior. She’s not going to let anything stand in her way, not for long. So she didn’t get Queen Consolidated right away. It still fits in our plan. In fact, it might be even better.”
“And what is this plan, exactly?”
Try as she might, she never gets an actual answer,  just an evil grin before he turns the topic back to her training,  the gruesome, my-body-feels-like-a-walking-bruise workouts that are supposedly teaching her how to fight.
“Well, first we’re going to work with the escrima sticks and then we’ll move on to archery.”
Her mother isn’t much better, but at least her lessons involve significantly less bruising.
“Why do we have to do archery anyway? It’s not like you’re good with a bow.” She’s seen him  fight far better with a sword and the sticks. He’s a better teacher with them too.
Slade’s face darkens. “Because she thinks you’d make a good archer.”
Evelyn looks away. She’s used to this now: the faraway looks, the mention of a she from his past. It’s never good to bring her up, but it’s always clear to her that he loved her, whoever she was. It’s equally clear that she’s dead and that this plan is some sort of revenge for that. But then there are times he speaks as if she’s still alive and there with them.
“She was a great archer,” he continues softly, a voice she’s never heard the fearsome Slade Wilson use before, “a warrior.”
Evelyn nods. “Alright then. When do we start?”
They’re gone.
Dead.
Murdered by the team of mask-wearing vigilantes.
Not just her mother, but Slade Wilson too.
That would have been bad enough, but then they had to besmirch her mother’s name,  make her out to be a crazed woman. It was abominable. They took her mother, her teacher, and left her with nothing. She was both angry and relieved that she had never shared her mother’s last name. Angry because she couldn’t stand up and claim her mother as her own, and relieved that she didn’t have to deal with any hate thrown her way.
But Slade wasn’t dead. She knew he wasn’t. He’d managed to send her a message, to tell  her to keep fighting.
So she did.
She made friends with a hacker, created a new electronic background, found teachers to help hone her skills, and studied up on the so-called vigilantes until she was able to find them and work her way into her inner circle.
She used all her mother’s lessons, all of Slade’s: she did what she had to do with only one goal in mind. She made deals with devils and tricked and fought her way through life.
The one bump in the road, the one thing they hadn’t prepared her for was Oliver Queen.
She knew him, as her half-brother, a pseudo-sibling she didn’t want to hurt if she didn’t have to. What she didn’t know was that he spent his nights running around in green leather shooting arrows. It leaves her conflicted. Should she kill the one blood relative she has left? Or was revenge for her mother’s death more important?
It was the fact that he was a good man that made that decision for her. If he had shown himself to be anything less, she would have killed him, Prometheus be damned. But he wasn’t. She might have even started to fall in love on that team with a boy covered in ancient, radioactive rags.
But all of it led to this final moment, to Lian Yu, where, if she played her cards right, she could walk away with Slade Wilson, the man who, as gruff as he was, was the last connection she had to her mother, her teacher, the person who understood her.
So that’s why she’s here, fighting former friends and relatives by the side of a psychopath.
To save Slade Wilson.
She doesn’t give a damn who wins or loses. She just needs Oliver to bring along a former friend to save his team, and then she’ll have someone again. She planned for this, learned her opponents for this.
She can’t lose.

Let me know you think!

WHEN THE CURTAIN DROPS...
Your grandmother’s fingerprints have left their mark on you, imprinted you to the bone, poisoned your blood with her legacy. Few of the fleeting moments you were granted with your babushka you can still recall, an elderly woman succumbing to death’s claws too soon for her little darling to get to know her, but the desire to make her proud this has only fueled. Perfection on pointy toes; what she used to be and what you are now. Without the ballet, you aren’t you, you cease to exist. With your shoes untied, you’re catapulted into a Schrödingerian state, a shell of yourself for the duration of your spare time, the few occasions when you couldn’t say no to socialisation being periods of quiet isolation amidst a crowd. Your whole life revolves around the craft, an antsy little swan with bitter determination, twirling her way to the throne. It’s all that matters to you, to them, all you can bring yourself to care about. Having fun is a pastime for the second best, not the rising star, the weight of your name enough to reel in the spectators and make them break out into starry-eyed cheer. A real Chernova in Birmingham, what an unexpected delight...
...YOU SHOW YOUR TRUE COLOURS
...but why, oh why, is she not the one in the limelight? Countless times you have heard them whisper it in confusion and by far more often you have heard them think it, read it in their pitiful stare as they unsuccessfully attempt to suppress their disappointment on time for you not to sense it. Alas, they aren’t the only ones let down by you, your biggest critic none other than yourself, your inner voice awfully reminiscent of how you recall your late grandmother’s whenever it finds it in its figurative heart to scold you for your shortcomings. Not good enough — never has been, never will be. A toxic mantra coursing through weakened veins, times of innocence in which you had not yet internalised it too distant to be recollected, the only hope you cling to being the questionable creditability of ‘never’. One day, perchance, as long as you keep your discipline, your easiest task. Cigarette after cigarette, pill after pill, skipped meal after skipped meal — bitter determination and ethereal dedication guide you through it, lulling you in with ambiguous promises of the glory you will be soon to reap. This is the last time, you whisper in hushed agony, the last time in the shadows, the last time you’re not taking centre stage. Next season will be your season, next season you’ll show them all. Keep holding on, never falter, and your potential will be realised, belatedly but for the remainder of your career. My, oh my, darling, perhaps it would be wiser to brace yourself for your next life.
VICTIM OR CULPRIT?
Close but not close enough — only the Diamond Fairy offers you a chance to shine this season, a role you’ve accepted with a brave smile on strained lips, teeth set to disrupt the flesh’s integrity in distress the moment you were out of sight. While many gush about you being the spitting image of your late grandmother, people unfamiliar with the Chernova name, be it Aliona Chernova or any other, have a tendency of comparing your beauty to that of Alexandra Daddario. Looks are a fickle thing not to be relied upon, as fleeting as a danseuse’s career span, the number twenty-seven threatening to become another obstacle on your way to the top you struggle to eliminate regardless of your discipline.
IN RELATION TO
ELIJAH GRANVILLE: Not a soul in the company appears to be much of a fan of the man and, oh, you cannot blame them no matter how little you tend to be in agreement with the masses. Arrogance as blatant as his is not easily overlooked, an attribute initially sparking your disdain until you found him with your back to you, Russian curses about the burden of his chores reaching unauthorised eardrums. Your response was curt, your accent vastly succeeding his but his dumbfounded astonishment you couldn’t match in your wildest dreams. And just like that you’ve come to bear a powerful man’s secret, an unlikely bond sprouting from dissimilarity in perfect sync with inexplicable, presumably culturally motivated familiarity. RINA KINLEY: The grand majority of your fellow danseurs and danseuses you hardly deem worthy of their positions but no one has handed you reasons for wariness on a silver platter quite like they have. They are hardly the most unskilled at their art, this much you have to enviously confess, albeit the hierarchy should put you further above them, its failing to do so you believe to be perfectly explained by the way they so infamously like to socialise with colleagues and higher-ups alike should the opportunity arise. Pointing a finger is hardly your style but spite fills your throat at the thought of advancement by some potentially being gained with a quick spread of their legs. DESDEMONA JAMES: Out of all the other dancers, the entire staff of the opera house, no one irks you as little as her, her company a refreshing change in routine for she would never urge you to be ‘more of a human’ as the most extroverted souls have so often before. Silence of the comfortable kind is a welcome companion among the two of you and should shared smoke breaks be filled with conversation, it’s never as unpleasant, never so numbingly senseless as most other exchanges social conventions force you to take part in turn out to be in nine out of ten cases. At the very least, taking a break with her feels a little less like a waste of time, a sensation soothing enough for you to consider her a friend.

Perfectly manicured nails clinked against the faded ceramic of a well-loved mug, the sepia liquid in it making its temperature known through bursts of steam descending upwards into the nothingness of the dimly-lit kitchen, unhomely and cold. She took her coffee black, her cigarettes (and the occasional advil) on an empty stomach and her breakfast sporadic, in small, self-aware bites, chewing slowly to avoid the risk of not catching satiety the second it set in — the routine of a girl with the heart of a fighter with no time to waste on caution. Irises of a blue so cold and striking it resembled the purest arctic ice rimmed slightly widened pupils staring down at the crisp surface of the burnt toast, black cherry jam smeared languidly across its wounds and smoothing them just enough to feign a healing effect. Another clink — the first weak link breaking free from the chain, an insignificantly sized crumb of fire engine red nail polish descending onto the clinically white surface of the tabletop. Just another crack in the surface, the embodiment of imperfection that haunted her like a hellhound clinging to her scent of despair, never once allowing her to succeed without immediately tainting the purity of her shine, its preserverance outliving all her attempts to exterminate it along with its ugly grin, a constant companion in her slumber.
All it takes is hard work and determination — a statement that could be the Chernova family motto, encrested and worshipped as a lifelong mantra posing as the saving grace for everyone who honoured it. Everyone, with the exception of her, trophy daughter demoted to black sheep for sheer lack of luck, all good karma long since exhausted by her forefathers and even close relatives. Perhaps choosing a field another had already undeniably made her own was her curse; perhaps the Chernovas were cursed to only find success through trying something new, as had her brother, finding fulfilment in real estate and sharing his joy with their parents through his wealth and evident inner peace — dreams thoroughly out of reach for his older sister who had never been enough and now surely never would be.
From the moment her infamously adorable little head could comprehend human speech patterns, little Aliona sensed that she wasn’t living up to parental expectations even before she had a chance to open cerulean eyes and get a first glimpse of the world she had been brought into. She was neither male nor had she picked up the bow to her father’s violin at the age of one and three quarters and instructed the quivering strings with the exquisite expertise of a veteran musician and those two offences alone already weighed so heavy on her parents’ hearts that she had merely one more chance to impress them before facing a lifetime stuck in the role of the family disappoinment — at the tender age of two. The only spark of love and adoration adult Aliona likes to believe to recall infant Allie spotting in a family member’s eyes belonged to her late grandmother, a woman of such greatness her first name had rendered itself obsolete, her celebrity attached to the term of awed endearment ‘the great Chernova’, who sacrified valueable time of her few remaining days to surverying the petite girl daintily positioned at the foot of her bed, the natural grace of a well-composed danseuse with a promising future all she cared to spot in her only granddaughter.
“One day, you’re going to be a star,” she implored an impressionable child, intonation worthy of an enchantress, “and you’ll put all the other graceless ducklings to shame. I just know it.”
With all her heart had Aliona wanted to know this too and hence she took it to be factual, embracing it as an unyielding truth, still offering her comfort as much as it tears her apart today. Her parents’ pride had long since become a subplot in a far greater scheme, the act of attempting to step into her grandmother’s footsteps enough to keep them civil but what she desired more than anything else in this world, ardently and unflatteringly, was to see the same gleam of awe in someone’s eyes again when they looked at her, triggered by her skill and talent — and one day, one day she still would. Of course she would — for that belief was what kept her going about her routine, what helped her out of bed in the morning and carried her to the opera house day after day, safe and sound on its majestic swings.
One day.
Some day.
Soon.
Or, potentially, never.
Stab stab stab.
A cigarette, stubbed out on the remnants of half devoured toast, was dropped from slender fingers beneath the shadow of a painful grimance, the crumbs of the burnt patches mingling with the ashes as though they had always been destined to find peace in their union. One day could easily be today as long as she kept assuring herself she was good enough — until she tricked herself into believing it.
