I just finished the audio book for Donna Tartt's novel The Secret History, so naturally I had to have a lil scroll to see what everyone thought on Tumblr. To add to the discourse: (spoilers, obviously)

Also trigger warning: incest, abuse, murder, alcoholism

Why is Tumblr so in love with Henry Winter?! He murders the farmer, Bunny, and possibly tries to kill Charles. He's manipulative and may well try to make Richard take the fall (har har) for Bunny's death. In the garden scene, he admits to being a psychopath/sociopath. Oh, and he's unbelievably pretentious

Also, why are there so many cute pictures of the twins hanging out? Their relationship was strained, incestuous, co-dependent, abusive. The whole uwu thing baffles me

Richard has a very obvious foot fetish and nobody is talking about it

The novel is quite funny, and I wish more people picked up on that. Most of the humour comes from Francis - the pinz nez stays ON during sex; no, Bunny's parents weren't very upset when one of their grandchildren ruined Francis' scarf, they were preoccupied by their missing son; and there's a throwaway line where the art students eat sushi with paintbrushes instead of chopsticks. I also liked when the twins panicked after Bunny's murder and decided to start repotting tulips

The farmer is referred to by name twice. Once in a newspaper, once by Bunny. Strange to think that he's the person in the squad who might actually have a conscience. Incidentally, Milo, the golden retriever who finds Bunny's body, has his name mentioned more frequently.

Richard is a smelly, badly dressed misanthrope. As is Henry, and Charles towards the end. Francis, Camilla and Hampden itself provide the (admittedly gorgeous) dark academia aesthetic, but if you want to end that dream, remember how terrible everything would have smelled. I guess the difference between appearance and reality is a pretty big theme

Julian is very creepy, obviously, but I was surprised that he wasn't more involved in the plot. He seems like exactly the sort of person to start a cult. I'd also like to know if he and Henry were in a sexual relationship, because we see them kiss once and then it's never mentioned again

Foreshadowing is done EXCELLENTLY through the book. There were a few characters who were described as ghostly at the start, and I THINK they're the ones who survive. Also, Tartt loves her pathetic fallacy (not phallusy).

Time is very strange. If you bothered to plot out all of the events, I don't think it quite makes sense. Term starts in September, say Richard joins Julian's classes in early October? That means all the picnics, the Sunday walks with Bunny, the trips to Francis' house, all happen over about five weeks, leading to the 12th November when Charles, Henry and Francis kill the farmer. Unreliable narrator, I guess

A lot of things about Richard's character make more sense when you realise the abuse he grew up experiencing and witnessing. Poor Ms Papen. Odd that Richard's parents don't visit him when he's in hospital

Funny that everyone is surprised when the twins' incest comes out. Like, they had an orgy at the start of the baccanal. Call me a prude, but I wouldn't attend an orgy with a family member

before i stop posting completely about tsh i feel i need to do the ethical thing and post the bad things about the characters so we don’t romantasize them, which is literally the point of the book (morbid longing for the picturesque at all cost)

Richard: literally fantasized about raping camilla

Francis: kinda SA’ed Richard in that one scene and everyone kinda brushed it off as oh, gay moment when Richard was telling him to stop

Charles: oh boy was he an abuser. he cared about his friends a lot but he was an alcoholic abuser who never addressed his behavior

Henry: Extremely problematic, literally the catalyst for the whole thing murdered two people and loved it even though one was his “bestie.” also highly manipulative and uses people for his own causes

Bunny: the list goes on and on, racist, homophobic, hates catholics (idk what that’s called but it’s not cool), antisemitic (hates jews), misogynistic woman hater, hates his girlfriend, makes fun of his friends, gold digger, manipulative, etc etc

Camilla: my bbg she did nothing wrong they were so bad to her i love her sm

and Judy did drugs but like she’s a college student in the 80’s so it’s not good but it was acceptable

and to lighten the mood

Richard: changed colleges and majors bc of pretty pictures in a brochure from 4 years ago

Francis: thinks smoking isn’t bad for his health

read about a book a while ago in which a bunch of women start holding, like, baccanals with big feasts in which they just LET GO. and the review made a big deal of the shock factor of how these women are, like, overeating to the point of throwing up, which obviously had me like 😳 as i don't often encounter this kink in daily life.

No dia 16 de dezembro, São Paulo vai ser palco do ‘Submerso 5.0’, o principal evento para quem atua ou deseja ingressar no mercado financeiro. Baccan Injil Luk 17, 7-10

Siapa di antara kamu yang mempunyai seorang hamba yang membajak atau menggembalakan ternak baginya, akan berkata kepada hamba itu, setelah ia pulang dari ladang: Mari segera makan, bukankah sebaliknya ia akan berkata kepada hamba itu: Sediakanlah makananku. Ikatlah pinggangmu dan layanilah aku sampai selesai aku makan dan minum. Dan sesudah itu engkau boleh makan dan minum.  Adakah ia berterima kasih kepada hamba itu, karena hamba itu telah melakukan apa yang ditugaskan kepadanya? Demikian jugalah kamu. Apabila kamu telah melakukan segala sesuatu yang ditugaskan kepadamu, hendaklah kamu berkata: Kami adalah hamba-hamba yang tidak berguna; kami hanya melakukan apa yang kami harus lakukan.

Terpujilah Kristus

Dalam bacaan Injil malam ini Yesus memberikan perumpamaan tentang seorang hamba yang melayani tuannya tanpa mengharapkan pujian atau penghargaan. Hamba tersebut hanya melakukan tugasnya dan mengakui bahwa dia hanya melakukan apa yang diberikan kepadanya. Perumpamaan ini mengajarkan kita tentang kerendahan hati, kesetiaan dalam pelayanan, dan pengakuan bahwa kita adalah hamba Allah yang seharusnya tidak mencari pujian manusia seperti halnya kesetiaan Musa dalam melayani Tuhan

dalam bacaan pertama dari Ibrani 2:23-3:9 yang diceritakan sebagai hamba yang setia dalam melayani Allah meskipun menghadapi berbagai rintangan dan tekanan.

Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, kita pun sering diuji oleh berbagai tantangan, kegagalan, dan tekanan yang mungkin membuat kita merasa putus asa atau kehilangan arah. Namun, perumpamaan yang diajarkan oleh Yesus dalam Luk 17 mengingatkan kita kembali bahwa kita adalah hamba Allah yang setia, dan tugas kita adalah melayani-Nya tanpa mengharapkan penghargaan atau pujian manusia. Ketika kita menjalani hidup dengan kerendahan hati dan kesetiaan kepada Tuhan, kita dapat menemukan makna yang lebih dalam dalam pelayanan kita.

Ketika membaca bacaan Injil malam ini kembali mengingatkan saya akan film "Facing the Giants" yang menggambarkan perjalanan spiritual seorang pelatih tim football Grant Taylor yang mengalami masa-masa sulit dan kehilangan harapan karena serangkaian kegagalan dalam kariernya sebagai pelatih sepak bola. Dia juga dihadapkan pada tekanan keuangan pribadi yang parah. Seperti banyak dari kita, Taylor merasakan ketidakpastian dan putus asa dalam hidupnya. Perjalanan spiritual yang dialaminya dan keberaniannya untuk percaya kepada Tuhan membantunya mendapatkan semangat baru dan memimpin timnya menuju keberhasilan, baik di dalam maupun di luar lapangan sepak bola.

Kisah Musa dalam bacaan pertama dan perjalanan Pelatih Grant Taylor dalam film "Facing the Giants," menyadarkan bahwa keduanya memiliki kesamaan dalam hal setia kepada tujuan yang lebih besar. Musa melayani Allah dengan setia, meskipun menghadapi berbagai tantangan dalam perjalanan bangsa Israel. Demikian pula, Pelatih Taylor, dalam menghadapi kegagalan dan tekanan yang besar, menemukan kembali tujuannya yang lebih besar daripada sekedar menang dalam pertandingan

Dengan demikian, renungan ini mengajak kita untuk menjalani hidup dengan kesetiaan, kerendahan hati, dan kepercayaan kepada Tuhan dalam menghadapi segala tantangan. Kita harus selalu mencari tujuan yang lebih besar dalam hidup kita, yaitu mewartakan kerajaan Allah dan menginspirasi orang lain untuk mengikuti-Nya. Ajakan pertobatan dalam konteks ini adalah untuk selalu mencari Allah dalam segala aspek kehidupan kita, berserah kepada-Nya dalam segala keadaan, dan menjadi saksi kesetiaan dan kuasa Allah kepada orang lain. Dengan demikian, kita dapat menjalani hidup yang bermakna, penuh dengan harapan, dan memuliakan-Nya dalam segala hal.
