De Noord-Hollandse bodem vertelt juist dát verhaal, en Rob van Eerden, archeologisch beleidsadviseur van de provincie Noord-Holland, licht het toe in zijn lezing op woensdag 18 januari van 20.15 tot 22.00 uur in Huis van Hilde. “Waarom weten we álles van de Romeinen en haast niets van de Germanen?”

De Romeinen bouwden steden met badhuizen en aquaducten, schreven contracten, hadden een ontwikkeld bestuurssysteem en een groot, goed bewapend beroepsleger. Toch werd het noordelijkste fort van de Romeinen, in Velsen, in 28 na Christus aangevallen door Friezen die genoeg hadden van de bezetting door de Romeinen.

Rob van Eerden vertelt wat we weten over de Germaanse Friezen, een volk van afzonderlijk wonende rundveehouders die in balans leefde met hun moerasrijke landschap en koele klimaat. Ze maakten deel uit van het grotere culturele verband dat het gehele gebied van Europa boven de Alpen omvatte. De Germanen lagen aan de basis van onze cultuur, lieten ons hun taal na, hun persoonsnamen (zoals Henk, Willem en Ruud), de namen van hun dorpen, hun goden in de namen van de dagen en meer.
