These stunning Banded Demoiselle damdelfly wings were quite literally plucked from the river waveney in norfolk. On an afternoon paddle board i come across hundreds of Banded Demoiselle damselflies, living there best lives. Unfortunatley not all survived, so to honour their short lives I have salvaged what I could out of the river to bring you these wonderful keepsakes. 🦋COMFORT🦋 The grief at the moment is almost too much to bear. Not just my own grief, that comes from several losses close together, but also the collective grief. All of us are experiencing this in one form or another. People are disillusioned. We feel abandoned. We have been lied to, cheated by those we trusted and gaslighted at every turn. We have lost people we love. Countries are in turmoil. And nature goes on. I lay on a tree over the water. I lay so still that nature accepts me again as a part of her. Legs lolling in the water nibbled by tiny fish. My body becomes the stage for a damselfly soap opera. A mating pair lands on my upturned foot, and despite dive-bombing males they manage to hold it together. Another male took a shine to my left hip and rested there, flexing, waiting for his time to come. A female settled on my arm. A wonder that these two never found each other. The male on my hip took a turn and landed on my left shoulder an inch from my face. He was so close I couldn’t even focus on him. Even after I moved he would lift off and come back to rest on a different part of me, his moving perch. As I stood to leave, a silver-washed fritillary butterfly came to settle on my left hip. It didn’t take my grief away. It didn’t heal me. 🦋DAMSELFLY🦋 The second image is a banded demoiselle damselfly. I found it dead close to my house, I’m not sure what it was doing so far from water. I’ve had my path crossed many times by these enchanting insects today, at one point a cloud of them flew out around me. I’ve never seen so many together before. These creatures spend 5 or so years of their life cycle growing underwater as larvae in silt. They only spend a few months in the form that we admire, with wings and shimmering blue bodies, ready to procreate and then die once the eggs have been laid. Two pieces of wisdom came to me through my encounters with them. 1. Don’t stray far from what gives you life. Whatever feeds your spirit, stay close to that. 2. If you feel you’ve only come into yourself later in life, and you wish you had learned all these lessons earlier, don’t worry. You are here now, blazing with glory. Now is all. That matters.
