My personal Weatherman – Taikan Yohou

The main characters – Segasaki and Yoh.

I'll disclaim in advance that there will be no plot in this dorama, but that is the beauty of it.

Segasaki is a weather presenter and Yoh draws eromanga. They met at university and fate has brought them together ever since.

Yoh has no money to pay the rent, so Sagasaki offers him a place to live together, but in return Yoh has to agree to everything they ask him to do.

For me personally, it's a little bit of a red flag (Segasaki can easily forbid Yoh to meet his friend in a cafe, and Yoh just has to accept it). I'll be honest, this relationship is weird, and in real life Segasaki is the kind of guy who should be fucked off, not even his godlike beauty could save him.

As I mentioned before, the eight episodes revolve around the relationship between the two main characters, we are included in all of Yoh's thoughts the whole time, the narration is almost all from his point of view.

Nevertheless, their chemistry is visible even to the naked eye, which is not surprising: the first thing they did when they moved in together was hook up. There is a peculiar problem built around this too, as Segasaki decided that they would only have sex before sunny days. Why?

It's a question that everyone was curious about, and the answer is pretty prosaic. Everything revolves around the weather (it's not for nothing that one of the main characters is a meteorologist).

– Hey. Why can’t we do it when it rains?

– Huh? Because you said so. When you first moved here and we did it.

– Huh?

– So you won’t have trouble with laundry.

I think I've rewatched it about eight times. It's hard for me to explain, but I was touched by literally every action, every look, every touch and misunderstanding.

Of course, Yoh had no idea that he was not just a servant to Segasaki, but the most precious person to him. And Segasaki is not good at using words, which is why we were stuck in the same place for a very long time.

But every interaction they had, the painfully ridiculous date, the dialogues - it all made my heart ache. It clearly states in black and white: Yoh fell first, but Segasaki fell harder.

Fanfact: when rewatching, I decided to start not from the beginning, but from the middle (first from the fifth series to the eighth, and then from the first to the fifth). And I was right! Exactly in the middle we start to be shown flashbacks of the characters' meeting, to which very nice and interesting references were made in the first episodes. Of course, when watching them for the first time, it is easy to just not notice them. So my idea was not as stupid as I thought at first.

– Put this in some Tupperware. I’ll eat it all. You’d better not eat any. This is mine.

I’m the only one who has to know that this carry tastes bad. He did the best to make it. That made me happy. That fact is all I need.

I'm very sensitive to this work, it deservedly became one of my favourites, because despite the simplicity of the plot, the characters are incredibly natural and beautiful in their "ordinaryness".

Yoh is a master of making things up (just like me), Segasaki is a expert at hiding his feelings and thoughts, he is sure that everything is clear to everyone (I can see your thoughts in the subtitles, you idiot. But Yoh can't read minds). As a result, Yoh didn't know they were dating for quite a while, when for Segasaki their relationship was obvious.

There aren't many characters in this dorama, but there's no need for them. We do fine with two goofballs who can't figure out the nature of their feelings until the last minute, while being stubbornly jealous of each other.

Turtles Catches Up With Jojo Tichakorn: The Warp Effect (2022-23) Edition

My life is so insane right now with the usual adulting responsibilities that afflict me and so many others (AFFLICT, I SAY!) that I've been spending most of the little time I have to write meta focused on the Old GMMTV Challenge -- I'm even neglecting my DARLING Japanese doramas in Minato's Laundromat 2 as I catch up on everything else, gah. (Dangerous Romance and Only Friends on consecutive days. SMDH. GMMTV said, hey beesh, your time belongs to MOI NOW, and I'm all like, HOW DID I LET YOU DO THIS TO ME.)

BUT ALL THAT BEING SAID, fuck, if you wanna make something happen, you make it happen, right? I heard the demands, the slamming of hands-hands-hands on the table from my dear friend @wen-kexing-apologist (HANDS!) to take on The Warp Effect as a means of preparing for the Only Friends onslaught, and to get to know another clutch project by the inimitable Jojo Tichakorn.

The Warp Effect was airing just as I really began to launch myself into watching more GMMTV dramas late last year. At the time of its airing in December 2022, I had literally only watched The Eclipse and A Tale of Thousand Stars like a GMMTV BL dilettante, not knowing 1) anything about 2) anyone and 3) why anyone, from the actors to the filmmakers, would be important to know about for any particular show. If I had picked up on The Warp Effect literally as it was airing, I, as an Asian-American, literally would have been like, THEY'RE MAKING THIS STUFF IN THAILAND, HOW DID ANYONE NOT TELL ME?!?!?!?! And that would have been it.

So, yeah, thank goodness I've watched it *now*, ha, in the midst of the OGMMTVC, where I've gained knowledge not only of the history of GMMTV's BL slate (of which The Warp Effect DOESN'T belong, just to clarify), but of the many significant actors who were in TWE, and also of the history of the GMMTV network airing increasingly progressive content in the first place. While BLs of all kinds, by various filmmakers, have aired on GMMTV since 2016's SOTUS -- as many of us know, Jojo exists outside of the BL bubble, making progressive art that's focused on sex and sexuality, sexual health, and the inclusion of queerness and various sexual expression and identification spectrums in everyday life.

I committed to knowing more about Jojo's oeuvre when Only Friends was first announced, because I'm always of the assumption that 1) artists talk to other artists through their artistic oeuvres, and that 2) artists also talk to their own growing body of art, through new art, progressively over the course of time. I figured that by being as familiar as I could be with as big of a scope as possible of Jojo's body of work, that I could pick up more deeply on where his mind might be going within Only Friends.

So anyway -- that's why I took on The Warp Effect. After watching Gay OK Bangkok -- Jojo's BRILLIANT 2016 collaborative web series with Backaof Noppharnach about male queerness and men's sexual health -- I knew The Warp Effect had to be next on my Jojo list. I also utterly devoured Jojo's 3 Will Be Free for the OGMMTVC, but in The Warp Effect, I wanted to see Jojo's continued conversation about sex, and his openness about sex in his art specifically, as a means of understanding better the framing from which he's coming to Only Friends.

Both P'Aof and Jojo have an utter expertise in teasing out brilliant performances from actors who you wouldn't necessarily think could pull off what these two demand in their work. I think on a regular basis about Tay Tawan's spin as Shin in 3WBF, and I shake my damn head at that performance every time -- how Tay, coming off of the jock role of a lifetime as Pete in Dark Blue Kiss, could play with such aplomb an unassuming gay virgin, out of the closet and inexperienced, who had a STEEL core of survival within him. It was such a great role.

I felt the same about seeing New Thitipoom as Alex in TWE. (And, honestly, I thought it was SUCH a G move for Jojo to continue exploring how to get some GMMTV guys out of their jock reputations by casting New from his own Dark Blue Kiss past, just like Tay. BRILLIANT.)

I LOVED New in this role. He clearly was acting outside of his usual boundaries, and I think he ate this role with eagerness. New as Alex emphasized a major core of The Warp Effect for me -- as opposed to 3 Will Be Free, The Warp Effect was rooted in a particular genre that's not always explored across the GMMTV portfolio: COMEDY.

The Warp Effect was fucking hilarious! New as Alex was out of control so much -- bumbling, mistake-prone, disoriented, but quickly gaining in centered control as he organized himself to begin tackling his way out of the curse that he had been put under.

What I love about what Jojo did with TWE was that with every curve this show took, every direction the story went, he clearly was driving the course of this show with one foot on the gas -- but with razor-sharp steering. A show rooted in comedy and depictions and dialogue about sex could have gone off the rails at so many moments. He began a number of episodes with montages of various intimacies that brought such a sexy and mature vibe to the show, that he rooted himself firmly in the ability to then dialogue about that intimacy with fluency. He knew how to set up conversations about sexual health with not an ounce of teachy condescension. He leveraged comedy when necessary to lighten what could have gotten dragged down by just about anything -- fear, judgement, condemnation. We know from Jojo's past oeuvre (GOKB, 3WBF) that he'd never go there. But that he took SUCH control of a complicated narrative that involved a sizable number of characters -- the fact that he wove commentary about sex and sexual health into that complicated narrative, and did it with sensible comedy and drama, was brilliant.

3WBF didn't talk about sexual health, but Gay OK Bangkok did, in spades, directed towards the Thai queer male community. I predict Only Friends is going to have some amount of commentary about alcohol abuse in queer partying culture vis à vis Ray. Selfishly, as a mom -- something that I will forever take away from The Warp Effect was the focus on women's reproductive health. I haven't seen such a close look -- and an ACCURATE READ -- on women's reproductive health in a show before this one.

So, first of all, I DO hope that it was meant to be indicated that Alex's memory about being an OB-GYN came back because, shit, you don't learn about giving Pap smears in a 30-second montage, HA. But that being said:

Stirrups? Speculums? Questions about looseness and fluids? Vaccines? Fertility? IVF? HORMONES? PREGNANT MOMMY HORMONES???

Damn. I mean. GIMME. I felt seen as a mom. Yet again, this is why I watch shows from Asia, and particularly Thailand by way of this country's openness with sexual honesty in media. How Jojo was able to turn the topic of women's reproductive health into compelling television. Western media would likely pooh-pooh this topic and/or turn it into cringe-worthy comic-ish commentary that would ultimately condescend to a woman's experience. I've been pregnant a few times, and let me tell you -- Jojo got Nim's experience CORRECT. (Except for her drinking what I hoped was a mocktail at the prom wedding. I know there are cultures that allow for minor drinking during pregnancy -- I'd have to find out where Thailand falls on that -- but my own personal experience was that my OB was so strict that I was afraid if she FOUND OUT I had a sip of something. Anyway, red drink in martini glass, let's hope it was Hawaiian Punch or the Thai equivalent.)

And of course, this being Jojo -- how The Warp Effect ALSO treated men's sexual health and queer male sexuality was also amazing, even heart-wrenching. I found myself getting emotional at Army's conversations with Joe about penetration and positioning, due in large part to Joe being so resistant at the start of even exploring these issues within himself. How Alex hilariously intervenes to provide Army the information he needs to come back to Joe to make intimacy better for the both of them -- again, the use of comedy here being so brilliantly leveraged to discuss a topic that could otherwise carry discomfort within it. The writing and filmmaking of Army's overall leading dialogue was incredible.

(ALSO?! FLUKE PUSIT?! MY FIRST TIME WITH FLUKE PUSIT?! Tell me why this dude doesn't have his own show again?! FLUKE AND THOR? THESE DUDES JUST WENT FOR IT! FUCK, MAN, LITERALLY! Holy shit, Fluke and Thor WERE RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING GEMS.)

(Let me also say: I hope Fah comes back to Thai television. She just NAILED her role as Jean, and I'd love to see her act again, and get to know her repertoire better.)

I think what made The Warp Effect so successful was, besides the tight but complicated storyline, is Jojo's TOTAL FEARLESSNESS at tackling topics that he is DEEPLY rooted in, at a very high comfort level. Even in 2016's GOKB, Jojo and P'Aof wrote VERY FRANK dialogue about men's sexual health. (And for good reason, as GOKB shared that in 2016, 25% of Bangkok's queer male population was HIV-positive -- a stunning stat.)

When a director is rooted in that FRANKNESS -- without fear or hesitation, and even pressure from a network or sponsors -- they can really go places by way of making bold content with equilibrium. Many of us have noted that Only Friends is not sponsored -- no Oishii or Lays in sight. That means that Jojo (and his team) are going into OF unfettered. Give me more unfettered content about sex and sexual health. The world needs it, especially if it's centered around a redemption story of such a good order, that it makes every single actor within the show better because of it. The Warp Effect was a joy to watch -- even while it was rooted in fantasy, the truth it shared about intimacy and health are permanent lessons that are always needing to be learned.

Hi, I would love to recommend some!

Thai Dramas

(Thailand has the most BLs and a lot of variety but also can be a little messy because the industry is still growing)

* I told sunset about you - about two teenagers that are rivals and are taking the college exams entrance. A classic come out of age story but also a brilliant masterpiece (acting, cinematography...)

* My School President the series - A light High School romance. Has the vibe of club activities anime. They are all dumbass and it is wholesome, funny and full of music (the characters remind me of the mugiwaras).

* Bad Buddy the series - One of the best titles. It is a college romance with romantic comedy Romeo and Juliet vibes. Two neighbors that the family hate each other meet again in college, but they are in rivals majors. First eps may be a little confusing but it picks up.

* Triage the series - a time travel stick in a loop story. There is an age gap since the protagonist is a doctor, while the patient he is trying to save in the time loop is a college student. But the story is pretty interesting.

* Not me the series - This one is about a set of students fighting against the oppression. White learns that his twin brother Black is in a comma and decides to take his place to find out who did this. However, he soons founds out that his brother is in a revolutionary group.

* Moonlight chicken - A more mature story. It is about the owner of a chicken shop, his family and the new men trying to flirt with him.

* A tale of thousand stars - About a spoiled brat that has a heart problem and ends up receiving the heart of a volunteer teacher. After the transplant, he decides to learn more about this women and changes to the little village that she was a volunteer teacher. More slow paced but a pretty story.

* Be my favorite the series - the protagonist feel like he wasn't able to get anything he wanted in live. He gets an object that allows him to time travel to his first year of college and change his future. It is a funny romantic comedy with some good lessons.

He is coming to me - A coming out of age story about a college student that can see ghosts (the age may feel weird because he first see the ghost as a kid but they are both the same age since the ghost died as a college sudtent too)

Japonese

(Japonese dramas a lot of times I feel are more mature, for an older audience or they hit the fluffy first love stories)

* What did you eat yesterday - About being older and queer. A more domestic slice of life. Definitely my favorite.

* My love mix up - this is an amazing first story! It is a light and funny romantic comedy set in high school. The characters are all adorable.

* If it's with you - just a cute and sweet romance, also high school

* My Beautiful man - this is a really good story, warning that the characters are more obsessive. Still you analyze their motivation and what is the story meaning. They are with each other.

* Cherry Magic - A classic. Has a Thai adaptation that is also worth checking and an anime. The protagonist is a 30y that gets the power to read people mind because he is a virgin. And the story? Pretty funny and wholesome.

* Our dinning table - Wholesome story. The protagonist becomes friends with a cheerful kid and his older brother and they bond over meals.

Old fashioned cupcake - a really beautiful story about allowing yourself to enjoy things even when growing older

* Takara-kun and Amagi-kun - cute, cute, cute and adorable. Fluffy high school romance

Korean

(Korean BL are usually the less problematics one. They are still small and I am not the biggest fan, but if you like their story most you can start without fear. The two first are the ones i like the most)

* Semantic Error - Romantic Comedy in a college setting. Fun to watch and the characters are interesting

* The Eighth sense - Another unique queer story. It is about a boy that moves away from his small town to attend college and falls in love with his senior. Good acting, cinematography and chemistry.

* Unintentional Love story - a recently fired office worker goes to the beach to take a vacation and there finds a recluse ceramic artist. It is a nice one to see

* To my star - Cute and good to pass the time

Taiwan

(Taiwan has more compelling plots but also is pretty messy so may be a hit miss)

* DNA says I love you - it is a hard story to explain, but it delivers really well complexity. The characters are interesting and the plot is different too.

* Be loved in house - a romance story about a boss and his employee that do not get along but end up living together. The dynamic is pretty fun and no need to worry about power in balance.

* History 3 trapped - the romance story of a policeman and the Mafia leader. Pretty fun to watch. I also recommend history 2 crossing the line (highschool volleyball romance) and history 3 make our days count (beautiful and amazing highschool romance but may make you cry). They are stand alone.

* My tooth your love - Romantic Comedy about a dentist and his patient that hates to go to the dentist over traumatic reasons, but is forced by his sister. A little cheesey and cliche, but a fun watch.

* No.1 for you - about two university students that are rivals.

Philippines

(I love their dramas but there isn't many)

* Gameboys - super funny but also can be quite heavy since it talks about the COVID pandemic. Two boys start talking online during the pandemic.

* Like in the movies - beautiful queer coming out story. It is about a college student that moves out to an apartment but he does not manage to get a job, so to pay rent he agrees to fake date his neighbor.

Chinese

(Chinese BL unfortunately are censored so you will not get any kiss of them or explicit romantic confession, but you can see the love is there)

* Untamed - the first of many, it is a cultivation story so it is complex at the start but really compelling and engaging plot

* Word of honor - also a cultivation story about two shameless bastards. Gets your attention.

* Guardian - it mixes some of the cultivation world elements with modern detective work. Funny and engaging.

* The spirealm - the characters enter in a game about live and death. A little confusing but I really love the characters

I tried to make a list with more variety so you can choose from. If you want more recs later let me know. A warning would be that a lot of this stories are still growing so you can see some problems in them but it is worth giving a chance. If you want to ask over an specific taste you have in stories, let me know because I can see it better.

- So I didn't know if by "no underage" romance you were talking about underage x adult or stories with no underage sex. I decided to add high school romance to the list that do not have sex and there is no age gap.

Stories that are not bl but i consider so and recommend" Beyond Evil and Devil Judge

Some that I didn't finish so they are not in the list but a lot of people rec: The Sign (really good and with a more complex plot), 3 will be free (poly), Until we meet again (soulmates), 23.5 (GL), She loves to eat and she loves to cook (GL), Killer and Healer (Chinese)

If you finish both A tale of thousand Stars and Bad buddy they have a special together in Our Skyy

I'm currently binge rewatching my favourite doramas and felt like sharing my favourite actors.

真田広之 (Sanada Hiroyuki)

Of course I know him from many western movies as well but I especially enjoyed 高校教師 and こんな恋のはなし with him.

藤木直人 (Fujiki Naohito)

I first saw him in 高校教師 and ホタルノヒカリ and from then on decided I need to watch everything with him (still working on that till this day)

豊川悦司 (Toyokawa Etsushi)

Until this day 愛していると言ってくれ is one of my favourite doramas. It's always worth to rewatch.

木村拓哉 (Kimura Takuya)

Mr. Brain was my very first dorama and then it only took Beautiful Life to absolute fall in love him as an actor.

生田斗真 (Ikuta Toma)

Surprisingly an actor who I didn't discover through some 90s dorama. 彼らが本気で編むときは and 先生！are such amazing movies, I wish everyone would watch them!

西島秀俊 (Nishijima Hidetoshi)

He was so cute in 僕とスターの９９日 and きのう何食べた？was a joy to watch. I wish more older actors would play roles in BL dorama.

Those are just some because I really watch a lot of doramas. And obviously I enjoy age gap romances so the older guys are always a treat for me. I can really recommend all the doramas I mentioned.

Today was wierd and a lot but had some very interesting discussions and moments. Between all that, I used just blue remnants to dye this hair, it's not a great gradient but it's better than the previous green blonde that matched no-one and the pink that turned brown.

I watched a 3 hour video essay (at 1.25x) https://youtube.com/watch?v=UJmJ5FbY5RY that got a little repetive but was a nice deep dive into how Nicolas Cage chooses films and his process. Lots of words about 'nouveau shamanism' and 'western kabuki' but what really tickled me is that he loved the big character acting of classic horror (Christopher Lee ect) and loves himself some modern asian dorama and with that reframing, yeah it's a performance and one I enjoy, does that make my taste camp? Maybe or maybe it's just expressive and culturally more relevant to my sometimes messy, hand talking, lots of 'face journeys' culture. Had to fast fwd through a bunch of recaps so I can watch some of the films mentioned unspoiled (and check does the dog die for stuff I don't like in horror first) ... but he's got a wide body of work in the horror genre so there's bound to be more than just slashers and stuff like 8MM which came at the exact right/wrong time in my life and left me misanthropic and nihilistic for a week til i found something constructive IRL for that anger. Another in good films with accurate emotional impact that I can NOT recommend. I disagree that the memefication of cage damaged his career, i feel like a bunch of movie choices and the studios bungled re-editing of wicker man from a dark comedy in to 'horror' backfired horribly. Hollywood is fickle and was entering the totally jacked hero era.

My PIG dvd is here!! so a rewatch is obviously in order but he's being as understated as a nic cage can be in that.

Also made me rewatch the underworld saga because I do love that era of monster movies with complex social orders (and whatever the haute couture equivalent of hot topic is)

Night all 💖 remember you have value and deserve to be loved and respected if you have a personality or developmental disorder. Most people *can* tell the difference between someone who is trying and working on their issues versus someone using it as an excuse to be thoughtless without change. Being flawed and vunerable can be very appealing to others who haven't had safe people to be flawed and vulnerable with. It's terrifying to let people in but there's a priceless kinship if it works out. 🖤🖤🖤

I've started a Takahashi Fumiya and Shison Jun drama hunt cus of gifs I seen from fermat cuisine by you and the couple other people making gifs ehehehe. That show was sooo good and now I need to find more good movies/shows w them in it! Other than fermat I only ever saw the yu yu hakusho live action (which I loved even if they were forced to condense too much into 5 eps, the actors and fight choreo was niiiice) haha. Do you know other shows or films w either of them you rec??

Actually nonnie I'm only new to Jdramas so I haven't really been able to check out their ENTIRE filmography (T . T) But I'll list out the ones I've watched (quite a lot more fumiya than jun stuff unfortunately) and maybe you can try checking them out if you'd like.

Takahashi Fumiya films/series

our secret diary (2023) - film, super cute sweet basic high school romance. not groundbreaking or anything but like a delicious dish of dessert you know you're going to enjoy. i think it's a total must watch if you're looking for a lighthearted romcom.

kimi no hana ni naru (2022) - series, fumiya plays ML and leader of a flopping boygroup. i'm not a huge fan of noona romance (FL is ML's former high school teacher) but that wasn't really the problem for me here. i just had qualms with FL's acting and fumiya was hard carrying for the entire series tbh. the music is VERY good (really feel good generic bg music *\(^o^)/*. fumiya looks extremely good in this series tho (understandable since he's playing an idol) |(￣3￣)| available on netflix.

themis no kyoshitsu: legal seishun hakusho (2023) - series, it's a law school drama and fumiya plays supporting role as one of the students. maybe it's because i watched other law tbs dramas so this one was underwhelming for me but i watched it just for fumiya and thought it was alright.

waru: hataraku no ga kakko warui nante dare ga itta (2022) - series, fumiya plays a lovable intern who has a crush on quirky FL (plays by the fabulous imada mio whom i adore). i had the worst 2ml syndrome and although i'm kinda glad FL technically doesn't end up with anyone i was stilllll rooting for fumiya's character so much. fumiya has more screentime than i initially thought and i loveeeee his character in this one (an adorable cutie).

saiai (2021) - series, fumiya plays a supporting role in this thriller mystery drama. i really liked this one but it wasn't because of fumiya, his screentime was minimal but the suspense was good. he's got that soft babie fumiya look for this one. it felt like a makjang kdrama. i recommend if you're in the mood for something thrilling (i think it's available on netflix as my dearest?).

bokura ga koroshita, saiai no kimi (2021) - series, fumiya plays the lead role in this thriller romance. i don't like series that leave me with way too many questions at the end so it was frustrating but fumiya's acting was insane so it was worth it. but very bloody and mild gore so trigger warning for that.

muchuu-sa, kimi ni (2021) - series, i think this was my first ever fumiya series but at the time i watched it i just thought it's a cute bromance series. kinda a strange dorama but it's healing and soft in a way.

divoc-12 (2022) - film, it's an anthology film so like a collection of short films so it's just 10 min really. i just watched it because CURLY HAIR FUMIYA.

Shison Jun films/series

joshiteki seikatsu (2018) - series, wonderfully heartwarming short series where jun plays a fabulous transgirl. i love it so much you can see i have started giffing for this series even though the raw quality is god awful (T . T)

gokushufudo (2020) - series, i ADORE this series. the premise is so wacky like it's about an ex yakuza/mafia dude adjusting to his new life as a house husband. jun plays an underling of ex-yakuza who assists him with various tasks. it's so funny i almost died laughing watching this one ✌︎('ω')✌︎.

high & low the worst and the worst x (2019 and 2022) - films, jun plays the lead role in this action comedy. i had fun watching but i wasn't really invested in this story. but like the acting and the music is excellent. if you like yu yu hakusho, i think you'll enjoy these films. both are available on netflix last time i checked.

i know that this answer probably wasn't that helpful but i hope once you start going down that takahashi fumiya or shison jun rabbit role, you'll find some series that you'll enjoy ٩( ᐛ )و

"É possível, sim, se apaixonar duas vezes pela mesma pessoa."

talvez seja porque nos últimos dias eu tenho estado completamente imersa em romances. sejam eles doramas ou livros. melhor falando, gostaria de destacar "Minha vida fora de série" e "Because this is my first life" (Porque esta é a minha primeira vida).

conheço ambas histórias muito bem, vez que o livro da Paula Pimenta por muito tempo foi meu favorito e o drama é a minha trama de conforto. no momento, estou relendo a série de livros e assistindo o drama pela terceira vez.

e, muito provavelmente por esse motivo, estive refletindo sobre dois casais presente nas histórias. Priscila & Rodrigo | Horang & Wooseok. mas o que eles podem ter em comum?

primeiro, ao acompanhar os passos da priscila, percebi que jamais concordaria com metade de suas atitudes. contudo, a personagem ainda é uma adolescente, o que justifica as ações inconsequentes e impulsivas na maior parte do tempo. priscila constantemente acha que tem razão sobre tudo e que seu namorado, rodrigo, deve adivinhar o que passa na sua mente vinte e quatro horas por dia.

nesse aspecto, não posso julgá-la. já tive treze, dezesseis anos e sei exatamente como é esse sentimento. acho que o fato de já ter passado por tudo isso me faz ter mais certeza do que jamais repetiria de novo.

por outro lado, temos a horang, com atitudes muito parecidas. só que com trinta anos. seu maior sonho é se casar e construir uma família, ser mãe. seu namorado, por sua vez, jamais pensou nessa possibilidade em sete anos de namoro. para ele, apenas estar do lado da pessoa amada já era o suficiente.

os dois casais têm o mesmo problema: falta de diálogo.

isso faz com que existam muitas idas e vindas, términos e, obviamente, brigas. lembro do meu eu de antigamente, quando viu essas histórias pela primeira vez e do aperto no coração que foi ver todo esse amor se despedaçando. por mim, eles poderiam ficar juntos para sempre.

eles eram para ser o amor da vida um do outro, não? eles precisavam ficar juntos para todo o sempre.

mas hoje... eles realmente precisam fazer tanto esforço para ficarem juntos no final? digo, os sinais de que não era para dar certo estavam claros desde o princípio, então, valia a pena continuar se machucando... por um futuro incerto?

sempre acreditei em primeiro amor, em amor para a vida toda. então sempre achei que valia, sim, a pena. agora não tenho mais tanta certeza assim. a ideia de terminar por tanto tempo, só para depois descobrir que você não vai a lugar algum sem aquela pessoa...

me irrita.

[I’m flipping furiously through my manga volume of Our Dining Table, making sure that I’m correct: I believe Our Dining Table, episode 3, is not canon to the manga (which is FINE, I’m not a canon fascist!) -- but if this zoo/bento episode appeared in any web/Twitter specials, I very much stand corrected!]

Another lovely one from Our Dining Table/Bokura No Shokutaku. Such a quiet, well-paced, lovely show.

Inukai as Yutaka does almost-cringe really well, as the comments of this post discussed last week, and this week, Yutaka really almost took it to the edge. His approach to his colleague to ask for help to learn how to make bento.... oof. I was this close squirming to the edge of my seat. So well done.

I think this framing of Yutaka 1) needing to learn how to make a bento, 2) needing to learn how to ask for help, 3) getting that help, and 4) receiving the warmest gambatte ever from his colleague -- I think, for the dorama’s sake, it was a necessary vignette to help build up Yutaka.

Because next week, when Yutaka runs into his brother in the grocery store -- it takes him out in the manga, and I have no doubt that Inukai is going to nail it in real time in the dorama.

So: in this episode, we see Yutaka going through a process of gaining confidence. He’s already feeling validated as a human through his developing relationship with Minoru and Tane-kun.

But I like that, in the dorama, this spreads to Yutaka’s social life/workplace, and that his colleagues are also seeing this change in him.

I didn’t quite put it this way when I was reading the manga for the first time, but we see blips of what happened in Yutaka’s childhood -- he was pushed away while groups of people, his family, ate. I didn’t call it this back then, but it was dehumanizing.

So what we’re seeing in Yutaka NOW, through Minoru and his family, is Yutaka’s REHUMANIZING. And a lot of that process, I realize, will totally be awkward! And Inukai is toooootally nailing how awkward it is for Yutaka to be going through this growth/regrowth process.

Ugh -- and it’s SO BEAUTIFUL TO SEE. HOW QUIET HIS CONVERSATIONS WITH MINORU ARE. How quiet that confession was to Minoru about not knowing how to make bentos, how nervous Yutaka was -- and, clearly, how moved Minoru was to be one of the recipients of those bentos.

Man, it gives me the shivers that this show is taking the time to fill in the emotional craters that Yutaka has from his upbringing. And I continue to love the portrayal of Minoru’s parenting towards Tane-kun -- and slowly, slowly, how Yutaka brings energy and skills to that shared parenting as well, because that’s what we’re seeing develop.

I knew I loved this manga because of how directly sweet it was. But what I didn’t realize, watching it in dorama form, is that it is SERIOUSLY breaking a HUGE Japanese paradigm of queer couples not being able to be married on paper and have official families. (In TsukuTabe/She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat, a Japanese lesbian is shown on social media as living overseas with her partner and a child.)

As a mama, I’m seriously getting chills watching Yutaka and Minoru grow in their very unofficial (as of now) partnership in sharing care for Tane-kun, and it is BLASSSSTTINNNGG my mom heart to wonderful little bits. ALKJSDKLJFSDF I LOVE THIS SHOW! This show is SUCH A MUST-WATCH, PEOPLE!
