literally just started this blog and nobody has interacted yet so there aren't any real frequently asked qs. i should say anticipated faq.

what's your jewish frame of reference? nominally aligned with open/modern orthodoxy (YCT beis din) but really post-denominational. my husband has an askhi dad and a mizrachi mom so we follow a mix of minhagim leaning heavily ashki. my observance is personal and evolving, but rn I cover my hair sometimes (always at shul & on holidays), host kosher-style, and attend a non-affiliated conservative-ish shul. I light candles and unplug on shabbat & chagim, and categorically will not do legal work, but I don't abstain from most muskeh. I'm an artist so being able to create on my holiest days is really special, sorry hashem. strongly dislike taharas hamispacha but am compliant on a technicality. I have multiple tattoos and multiple piercings (not just classic lobes). I spell out God but might evolve on this one. actually might evolve on basically all of these. I am a jewish work in progress!

what's your israel frame of reference? husband's family is largely in israel, incl olim, sabras, mena refugees. my in-laws live in jerusalem. i have both israeli and palestinian friends and coworkers. I got bit really hard by a cat in tel aviv once and had to get a rabies vax course and every doctor at the israeli health ministry made fun of me for getting bit (fair)

are you a zionist? if you're trying to follow a "good jew" begone. it depends on the definition. and if that wigs you out, begone. I believe jews deserve self-determination in the land and I think the state exists (and has existed for quite a while now — and btw 1948 is not late for a modern nation-state to have been founded). I follow israeli politics and discuss them with real live israelis, and can pretty comfortably say I oppose likud, bibi, and the death count & strategies of the current crisis, i think kahanists are terrorists, and I do not jam with theocracies. most of the time when people ask if I'm a zionist I say I'm not, because I'm not a likudnik and I want palestinians to be safe and happy. aand I don't want to get hate crimed at law school. if jews ask if i'm a zionist I go into the preceding explanation and then say I guess I probably am because I think israel does and should exist, and that we belong there.

you're (almost) an indigenous rights attorney, so who's indigenous to i/p? i believe that jews have a pretty good claim to indigeneity to that land according to the UN's operative loose definition (martínez cobo) but that the politics surrounding indigeneity also imply a power structure that does not exist within israeli borders, i.e. jews are not the party being disenfranchised within the nation state. imo we are still an indigenous tribal people with the right to self-determination in the land but whenever I have this conversation i have this feverish urge to start talking about power dynamics and indigeneity as an indefinite legal category. i think palestinians also have a good claim to indigeneity (with weaknesses of their own) and i think they also have the right to self-determination in the land. AND indigeneity doesn't legally guarantee one a state, AND the crises on the ground would be horrifying whether or not any party was indigenous. tldr i have too much to say on this. i'll use the tag #i/p indigeneity on this going fwd!

The short answer to your first question is "yes." The longer answer is "yes, absolutely!"

The short answer to your second question is "no.", the longer answer is "not at all."

But let us start with the definition of antisemitism:

hostility to, prejudice towards, or discrimination against Jewish people.

This will guide us through this answer.

Can someone be skeptical of all religions, including Judaism, without being anti-semitic?

As said before, the short answer to this question is absolutely. It is not antisemitic to be skeptical of Judaism or Jewish practices if one is skeptical of other religions as well. It is, however, antisemitic to target only Judaism in one's skepticism. If, for instance, you're skeptical of Judaism's custom of circumcision, but not Islam's, even though both mandate circumcision of males, then this shows some sort of prejudice against Jews. Thinking it's only bad when Jews do it is prejudice. Because instead of targeting the custom as a whole, you target only one group who follows it. In the same vain, targeting only Islam for circumcision and not Judaism is actually Islamophobic, as it singles out Islam despite it not being the only one to follow the custom.

The answer, again, as said before, is "not at all."

Skepticism and criticism of a religion are important because religions are extremely flawed and always have political undertones (and overtones) to them. Christianity as we know it is entrenched in Paul's own political thought. Islam was a political tool since the very beginning (I could go on and on about this, but I'll just say that a person claiming his word are the exact word of god and he's the only one saying this true word of god and later scholars saying the book is the pure word of god when it has such political undertones to it shows the politics of the persons who developed the religion) and Judaism has begone also from a religious political group that separated from polytheists after becoming monolatry, which would later (again, mainly by politicsl turn into monotheism. It evolved actually from two groups, Yahwists and Elists, but that's a story for another day as I once agaisn digress. The tl;dr of this is, criticism and skepticism of religions is not at all bad, or bigoted, even if the religion in question is Judaism.

When does it become automatically antisemitic? When the sentiment turns from "I'm critical of Judaism" to "I am against Jewish people and their rights, humanity,and dignity." Questioning Jewish people's loyalty because of either their religion as was always the case, or because of the mere existence of a Jewish state, for instance, is very antisemitic. Saying you're worried that someone will choose their religion of Judaism over their loyalty is antisemitic, it's also Islamophobic if you do the same for Muslims, and is anti Christian in nature if you do so to Christians. Of course, if you do it to all religions you're just bigoted period, but if you target only Jewish people with that sentiment, you are antisemitic.

There is always nuance in everything, but antisemitism is similar to misogyny in that it's based on the mere fact these people are who they are: misogyny is the hatred of women for being women, and antisemitism is the hatred of Jewish people for simply being Jewish. Saying "women can't lead because they're too emotional/because these days of the month/because they are lacking in intelligence and intellect/etc." is misogynistic, and saying "Jews can't be leaders because heir loyalty lies with their own and not the well being if the country" is antisemitic. If you were to say "politicians shouldn't be leaders because they're too influenced by their financial backers" then it's neither, unless, again, you target female and/or Jewish politicians only.

I hope I made sense in my response, I typed and closed the tab on my phone several times yesterday, so I kind of forgot my initial idea of how to answer this. I know my equivalents aren't perfect, but none can be, because every case is special and specific to itself. I just think that some similarities can help understanding a claim better.
