New idea for a blog
New idea for a blog: circulation assistant who enjoys talking about the books she checks in and out every day. I have no idea if anyone would find my opinions of books interesting: I'm mainly writing for me. Last fall, after the library hired me, I began keeping a list of good-looking children's books for my mother, who says she's going to start reading books to little kids somewhere, as soon as she's settled into her new apartment. The list mushroomed right away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can I start a blog this way? I'd love to keep notes on the books I see every day. For instance, today someone returned Jenny and the Cat Club, a book my grandmother used to read to me. So dear to my heart, little black cat Jenny with her red scarf and silver ice skates, and her wonderful friends. I'm overjoyed that someone is still reading it!
Tumblr media
Also, a really funny edition of Frankenstein: Frankenstein: Annotated for Scientists, Engineers, and Creators of All Kinds. Worrisome, isn't it, to think that someone seems to want to encourage scientists to...um...duplicate Frankenstein's research? Not sure if that is what is intended by the title.
Tumblr media
Just read an adorable book called It Came in the Mail. Little boy loves getting mail, so he writes a letter to the mailbox asking it to send him things. The first thing that arrives is a dragon. All the art is letter/postcard art, with appropriate and adapted post office stamps: "oversize" on the elephant, and "pearishable" on a giant pear.
Tumblr media
Every day I'm amazed at the dazzling and creative art used in children's books. Yesterday I read a sweet Native American myth, called The Girl Who Loved Horses, a Caldecott winner from 1978 by Paul Goble. His Native American-style art is colorful and gorgeous, and sweeps across the pages in a way that suggests wild mustangs in motion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The popularity of graphic novels has freed both adult and children's book authors from the either/or of "text" or "picture book". I nabbed a book today that I'd like to read called Trial by Jury Journal. I opened it to find that the story is told by all kinds of print media - the usual paragraphs, letters, newspaper articles, etc. I love creative flights like this. It reminds me of that beautiful series of books done as letters and postcards: Nick Bantock's Griffin and Sabine romance. I love the zing I get when I can connect two authors and think, I wonder if the older book(s) had an influence on the newer ones? Did Bantock's books pave the way for others of this type?
Update on Trial by Jury Journal: Good but not great. Kids will probably appreciate the character name puns more than I did - over several pages it wears a little thin (e.g., Anna Conda, Rhett Tyle). Still, the narration style keeps switching, which both keeps it interesting and develops individual characters. However, I think she could've gone further with the character development. They're not flat, but they don't have a full three dimensions. Still love the pen-and-ink art, reminiscent of Joseph Schindelman's original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Lemony Snickett.
Tumblr media
Then there's Kaz Windness's If Ur Stabby, about a psycho anti-unicorn. Definitely NOT for kids under 12. A nice old man handed me the book the other day because (I think) his granddaughter had pulled it off the (presumably) adult graphic novel shelf, and he thought it might not be for children. Which it is NOT. However, the dark (one might say sick) humor of a depressed unicorn depicted largely in black and white is pretty funny if you've had a little too much princess literature, or the Pinkalicious series, come across your desk.
Just did a deeper dive into Stabby, who is apparently a graduate of Mother Goth Rhymes, which I can't put on hold right now because I have too many other books out that are overdue. (Just can't get myself to read enough. Very frustrating.) Fascinating stuff, though - "Stabby the Unicorn" is a meme, and apparently a game - "Unstable Unicorns", which would be a great name for a band, don't you think? But the game - "a strategic card game that will destroy your friendships" - is a little to manga for my taste. Even though they're "unstable", they're too cute and marshmallowy. More on that some other time, I think. Stabby is not manga. Original artwork - lots of curly, swirly letters and piles of skulls.
Tumblr media
On a more serious, but still dark, note, I saw a book today entitled The Midwife of Auschwitz. My first reaction was YOW, this sounds horribly depressing. I was intrigued enough to read the blurb on the back, and it depicts exactly the story you'd expect of the title. However, I expect it would be an interesting take on the Holocaust, if you're in the right frame of mind. It turns out that among the atrocities the Nazis committed at the camps, they took the most Aryan-looking babies and gave them to German couples wanting children. Just like the Irish nuns and the evil folks in Before We Were Yours did.

Book Review: A SUPER SCARY NARWHALLOWEEN by Ben Clanton (2023)
Tumblr media
(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program.)
Halloween is fast approaching, and the upcoming holiday has all the sea creatures worked up. Narwhal is characteristically over the moon with excitement - he loves Halloween, but can't decide what to be (witch? mermaid? candy corn of the sea?). Meanwhile, Jelly just wants to hide under a rock until November 1st - he doesn't much appreciate a good frighten, and witches and monsters are downright terrifying. But when narwhal goes missing - presumably eaten by a carnivorous sea serpent - Jelly has to convince the gang to super-fy and swim to Narwhal's rescue.
A SUPER SCARY NARWHALLOWEEN has the same silly charm of the previous seven books in the NARWHAL AND JELLY series, with the added bonus of some Halloween hijinx.
Read it if you like: unicorns; narwhals; waffles; pumpkins; pumpkin waffles; wordplay; mermaids; Halloween; super-heroing; and glow in the dark art.
On that note: I can definitely picture Leslie Knope reading this series to her triplets.

Satin Sheets - St. Francis II
(Chillwave, Downtempo, Vaporwave)
The New Zealand vaporwave artist returns with the second installation in his St. Francis series, a new collection of dreamy, lightweight breakbeat tunes that form one lush and cohesive package. St. Francis II's short tracks don't make much of an impact on their own, but combined together they create one wonderful listen.
☆☆☆☆
Ben Pogson's music sits on the humid, summery side of the vaporwave scene, but there's always enough energy to it all to keep the music solid and engaging. As Satin Sheets, his take on synthpop-infused 90s nostalgia sits squarely between the concentrated and potent sound of modern electronica with the warm neon glow of an old mall advertisement, his 2017 debut St. Francis a 45-minute trip into one of the most summery and lush electronic albums that year that was impossible to get off your mind after you first heard it. And now, after five years of relative silence, the second installment of the St. Francis series is out, Pogson further developing on the tropical sound of his debut with chunky breakbeats, glossy MIDI melodies, and the heat wave haziness of vaporwave that polish up his sound for a new decade while keeping in line with the signature Satin Sheets sound. A short listen at just 32 minutes, St. Francis II is still a welcome return for Pogson, with a consistent enough sound and alluring atmosphere to make for one divine listen. Where St. Francis centered itself more around breezier mixes of vaporwave with downtempo 80s synth funk, backbeat percussive grooves and prominent basslines, the breakbeat focus of St. Francis II is much more reminiscent of other 100% Electronica releases compared to the vaporwave focus of its predecessor, Pogson's sound more in line with those like Pictureplane and George Clanton than with FM Skyline and Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night. What still sets his music apart though, is that it's still closer in spirit to vaporwave's off-kilter nostalgia, the icy synth leads atop a slow-motion breakbeat on Air 98 or fuzzy digital flute and steel drum patches thrown into see/D making sure that St. Francis II's core still lies within that genre, even if the music is starting to break away from it in form. Through that, Pogson is also able to make the album an incredibly cohesive listen, stitching each song together with short dreamy interludes that give each song a distinct place within the tracklist without having to constantly start and stop the flow of energy to make it happen, the run of tracks from Continental Haze to Vacation Aura absolutely lovely as each delicate ambient piece between them slowly drifts you over to the next stop on Pogson's adventure. You'll know what you're in for with St. Francis II by the time the first few tracks are over, but by honing in on one sound and doing all he can with it, Pogson's music has never felt so immersive and weightless. Like the rest of his 100% Electronica peers, what makes Pogson's music so special is how well it's able to balance mood and atmosphere with gummy melodies and sturdy song structures, St. Francis II's chunky drum samples all he needs to get the ball rolling. The way these songs groove all feels quite similar, downtempo drum break with the variation largely in the sound of the drums rather than the way they're performed, but by keeping everything locked down this way Pogson can do things like add serene ambient layers to After Ashley or bring a darker melodic touch to the midnight sensuality of Summer Storm Romance, not having to concern himself with working around all sorts of different musical structures and instead finding as many ways as he can to make this one sound feel refreshing and enjoyable across all 16 of the album's tracks, With any other artist, this kind of homogeneity wouldn't work, but Pogson's sound is one that benefits from that kind of relaxed atmosphere and simple sound, tracks like Air 98 and Vacation Aura not needing much more than a beat and some dreamy synths to get you immediately obsessed with how cozy and snug they are to listen to. St. Francis II isn't doing anything particularly revolutionary, but it sells its sound so well that the relatively linear shapes that the songs take don't take away from them in the slightest. Looking at its individual tracks, none of St. Francis II's songs make too strong of an impression - they're all quite low-key and laid-back, never trying to hit you too hard with their sound. But as an album, nothing this year compares to how peaceful and crisp it is on the ears, 32 minutes of pure euphoria that never ceases to be a rejuvenating and thoughtful listen, letting the little things speak volumes for Pogson's music as the small changes he makes to each song able to create an entire new world within the album. He knows what his music is made for, and he knows how to make it work well, and St. Francis II consistently delivers it with poise and personality. When the music is this good, there's not much more you could ask for than this.

Take Wyatt Earp as a biopic and it is a superb and fair film. Compare it to Tombstone which was more of a Western and it’s lacking the flair. However, it ends abruptly, and it is miscast. Cosner (and i am a fan) doesn’t really make a good Earp. Dennis Quaid who I am also a fan of, doesn’t make a good Doc. This was 1994, in the 80s I might have a dif...

Ben Clanton was so gracious with his time today - he had a lot of fans, and he made great kind connections with kids who love reading funny books. He was also generous - the girls came home with a bookmark and activity book apiece, too! The girls loved looking gently through his sketchbook!
