The cast includes Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, Rip Torn, and John Amos. The film played so much on HBO that the acronym was jokingly referred to as, “Hey, Beastmaster’s On!” This film has it all: bat people, killer ferrets, black-dyed tigers, and much more. Casting choices that didn’t make the cut? Demi Moore as Kiri (played by Tanya Roberts) and Klaus Kinksi as Maax (played by Rip Torn). Could this be Jeff Mohr’s new favorite Eighties film? You’ll have to listen to find out.
At the time of this writing, The Beastmaster is available to stream from Amazon Prime and on physical media as a 4k Ultra HD Two-Disc Set from Vinegar Syndrome.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film chosen by Crystal, will be House (1985). The Tarasque
aka how are people going to know i’m french if I don’t show this weird girl.
Tumblr media
The legend of the Tarasque is mostly known through the Légende dorée (golden legends) of Jacques de Voragine, but also  Frédéric Mistral, who wrote a description of the beast. Tarasques are found in several cities, usually named after the same myth, like Tarascon, in France, and Tarragone, in Spain.
It is described as follow :
E sièis pèd d’ome pèr mies courre;
The beast has the tail of a snake | Eyes more red than cinnabre (a type of red pigment extracted from a certain mineral) | On it’s back scales and spikes that scare! | Of a big lion it has the muzzle | And six feet to better run | In it’s cavern, beneath a rock | that dominate the Rhône, she takes what she can
She’s also rumored to be the child of the Leviathan and a Bonnacon, and like the later, the Tarasque is supposed to be able to expel burning feces. It was said to have come from Galatia.
In the Légende dorée, here’s the story that Jacques de Voragine describes.
The Tarasque lived in a lair under a rock, on which was later built the castle of Tarascon, the castle Roy Réné. The beast haunted the swamps and the Rhône, terrifying villagers, fishermen and other travelers. The townsfolk decided to get rid of the creature, however of the several expeditions, none came back succesful.
One day of the year 48, a young girl named Marthe, coming to evangelize the Basse-Provence, decided to go face the Tarasque, after hearing the tales of the locals on a strange beast roaming around the village. The townsfolk attempted to convince her to withdraw from her words, if she wanted to live, but the girl had taken her decision. Helped by her faith in God, Marthe approached the Tarasque, and tamed her by sprinkling her with Holy water and showing her the cross, getting her to surrender and obey. She finally managed to pass a leach made of her own scarf around the Tarasque’s neck, and brought her back to the village.
The townsfolk, still haunted by the deeds of the beast, rushed the dragon, who offered no resistance, and tore it to pieces. Martha then preached to the people, converting many to Christianity, and, sorry of what they had done, the townsfolk changed the name of the city to Tarascon.
The tarasque is now celebrated during two days : On the second Sunday after Pentecôte (Whit Sunday, Whitsun, Pentecost, Shavuot), and on the day of St Marthe (9th of July). The celebration involves the construction of an effigy of the beast that is released into the streets and blamed for breaking dykes and dams, and for the inondations caused by the Rhônes, that the beast was rumored to make flood by peeing in it or simply entering the river. The townsfolk try to touch the beast while escaping it’s tail, that swings left and right, as some tales describe other potential slayers of the beast doing. People usually accompany the walk of the Tarasque by the saying :
Lagadeou, lagadigadeou, la Tarascou
Lagadeou, lagadigadeou, lou Casteou
(Lagadeou, lagadigadeou seems to be an onomatopeia, la Tarascou refers to the Tarasque, and lou Casteou refers to the castle of Tarascon)
There has been recorded incidents of the effigy of the tarasque breaking bones of the people not nimble enough to escape it’s tail, but it appears that it was mostly encouraged by the crowd, who cheered when it happened. In 1808, Aubin-Louis Millin recorded the cheer :
A que ben fé! A que ben fé!
La Tarascon a rou un bré!
(‘Oh that’s well done! Oh that’s well done! The Tarasque has smashed an arm!’)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They could have celebrated the Saint. But it would have been much less fun. Plus, I think the poor Tarasque deserves a celebration in her honor, after all, she had intended to stop her tendencies less advantageous to the townsfolk living near her lair.
