Pair of Vintage Thai Bencharong Lidded Jars, 20th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This porcelain jar and lid form having a raised foot rim and lotus bud on a disk lid finial is richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels in the style of the royal household ceramics favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colors used to decorate such porcelain. These jars and covers are decorated with typical Thai motifs.

Hand painted Bencharong Porcelain Skull. #Bencharong or #เบญจรงค์ translates to “5 colors” in Thai. Bencharong porcelain has been used by The Royal Court in Thailand for the last 2 and half centuries. This traditional style of painstakingly hand-painted detail has fallen out of fashion. The artform has slowly been dying out. I was lucky enough to find some super talented craftsman in Nakhon Phathom to help teach me about this technique. La vajilla Bencharong es una porcelana policromada fabricada en la ciudad de Jingdezhen (la capital de la porcelana de China) y ricamente decorada al gusto tailandés con esmaltes brillantes. Se cree que los libros y pinturas budistas se suministraron como referencias y se enviaron a los comerciantes de Guangzhou, quienes actuaron como intermediarios de los alfareros y decoradores chinos para pedidos extranjeros. Al igual que con las órdenes occidentales, las formas cerámicas nuevas y extrañas se comunicaban mediante maquetas de madera o quizás de metal. Si bien el nombre Bencharong deriva de las palabras sánscritas 'pancha' y 'ranga' que significan cinco colores, las mercancías de Bencharong también se pueden encontrar con tan solo tres y hasta ocho colores.

Las mercancías de Bencharong fueron encargadas por primera vez por los reyes tailandeses de Ayutthaya en el siglo XVIII durante un período pacífico de gobierno que era agradable para los picnics y excursiones y donde las mercancías de Bencharong se podían usar para almacenar y servir comida. Después de la caída de Autthaya ante los birmanos en 1767, los artículos de Bencharong se hicieron más utilizados y los artículos de Lain Nam Thong los sustituyeron como artículos exclusivos de la realeza.

Este plato está decorado con imágenes alternas de 'thepanom' y 'norasingha', ambas deidades budistas menores pertenecientes a la escuela de budismo Theravada. Por lo general, los 'thepanom' (seres celestiales que viven en uno de los seis cielos budistas inferiores) se sientan con las piernas cruzadas en una postura de oración, desnudos excepto por un collar con pétalos, brazaletes y corona. Por lo general, el 'norasingha', que se cree reside en el mítico bosque del Himafán en las montañas del Himalaya, tiene una cabeza humana, los cuartos traseros de un león con una cola con la punta de las llamas y las pezuñas de un ciervo. El área entre las dos figuras está llena con el motivo de la llama tailandesa conocido como 'lai kranok'.
