Berlin Now by Peter Schneider

“‘Berliners,’ [social worker Anneliese Bödecker] casually remarked, “‘ are unfriendly and inconsiderate, gruff and self-righteous; Berlin is off-putting, loud, dirty, and gray, with construction site and congested streets wherever you happen to be or go. But I feel sorry for anyone who can’t live here.’” This quote ends Peter Schneider’s Berlin Now: The City After the Wall, but it also perfectly encapsulates the book. From arguments over what to do with the contested empty square Potsdamer Platz to discussions about contemporary Jewish life in Berlin, Berlin Now provides a look at the city as it was when the book was published in 2014. Gone is the Reichstag carrying out its anti-Semitic laws under Adolf Hitler and the infamous wall dividing the Western and Eastern sides of the German capital city, but these things have both left their mark on the city today and will continue to do so. Today, Berlin is a rapidly changing and growing city with a bright future and dark past. Berliners continue wild partying not just into the wee hours of the morning, but into the next morning and the next morning as well. They discuss and debate how best to memorialize the Holocaust and Berlin Wall and are quick to rise up to condemn incidents of racism and xenophobia. The city is also now home to a growing immigrant population, which contributes extensively to the culture and fabric of the city, but young Arab immigrants are also responsible for incidents of crime and violence in the city. A study of today’s Berlin by reading this book in a good translation by Sophie Schlondorff can teach Americans a lot and shows how the Old World country is dealing with relevant issues in America. Confronting and memorializing a dark past, healing division, immigration, gentrification, a rise in nationalism and racism and more are all things that both nations are dealing with. It could do both countries much good to analyze these issues together, see what each is doing right and wrong and working to implement the right and fix the wrong.
