Why Exercise is a Must to Help Manage Your Osteoarthritis!
WHAT IS IT?
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting 3.6 million Australians. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time from general wear and tear or due to injury. The most common joints affected are hands, knees, hips and through the spine.
In 2017-2018, 57.3% of females over 65 years suffered from osteoarthritis, with 39.9% of males over 65 years also suffering from the disease.
Some common symptoms of osteoarthritis include pain and stiffness of joints, tender and warm joints, swelling and limited range of movement. These symptoms can be quite debilitating and can restrict activities such as squatting, bending, walking, climbing stairs, gripping, and standing. Osteoarthritis can severely impact a person’s quality of life through the limitations of these movements.

MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES & MOVEMENT AS MEDICINE
There are multiple modes of treatment for osteoarthritis. Pain management through medication, joint replacements, platelet rich plasma injections, hot and cold therapy just to name a few. Exercise has been shown to be an effective treatment to help with improving pain, improving joint strength, joint Range of Motion (ROM) and overall quality of life.
Performing strength exercises can increase muscle strength surrounding problem joints. This increase in muscle strength can help to take up some of the load through the joint, thus reducing the amount of force being applied to the joint surfaces. Regular exercise can also help to improve joint ROM. Restoring a joints ROM but to within normal limits can help to reduce pain and improve ability to perform everyday tasks such as squatting, bending, and climbing stairs.
The most common joint type in the body is a synovial joint, which is a joint which has a membrane surrounding it that produces synovial fluid. This synovial fluid provides nutrients to the joint space and helps to act as a lubricant.
Exercise has been shown to improve synovial fluid nutrients and effectiveness at lubricating the joints. Increased body weight can have an impact on osteoarthritis, particularly in our load-bearing joints such as our spine, hips, and knees. Exercise can assist in weight management to help reduce the load going through your body, thus alleviating some joint pain.
Of course, exercise should be tailored to the individual depending on the severity of their osteoarthritis and their current level of function. Exercises can be scaled so that they can be performed within acceptable levels of discomfort and not increase risk of causing further damage. These exercises then can be gradually increased as everyone’s function and strength increases.
As we age, most people want to maintain independence, be able to perform the activities that they want to do, engage with family members and be active participants in life. Osteoarthritis can be debilitating due to pain and loss of the ability to perform these activities. Don’t be afraid to move if you suffer from osteoarthritis.
Exercise can help you take control of your pain and function and ensure you can continue to do the things you love to do!
