What movies to watch before Joker? Part 2 (possible spoilers ahead!)
TW for mentions of suicide attempts ahead.

To Die For (1995):
Why?: In this classic Gus Van Sant movie, and one of Joaquin's first notable roles, Joaquin plays the role of Jimmy, a dimwitted high school punk who becomes enamored with a woman named Suzanne Stone. Suzanne is incredibly smart and very dedicated to her career on the local news, and whom is doing a documentary series on Jimmy and his friends to advance her career.
In this movie, Jimmy realizes how far he would go to do something for a person he cares about.
I find this similar to how in the Joker movie, Arthur will seem to undergo the transformation into the Joker due to various complications in his life. This is required viewing! Nicole Kidman is also amazing in this movie. You really get to see how Joaquin has grown as an actor.

Two Lovers (2008):
Why?: In this James Gray movie, Joaquin plays the role of Leonard, a young Russian Jewish man who has a history of suicide attempts and takes medications for his mental illness. Leonard works for his family's business, but all Leonard wants to do is persue a future in photography. Leonard is also still recovering from a bad breakup when he meets two young women: Sandra and Michelle. Both Sandra's and Leonard's parents want Leonard to marry Sandra, because she is Jewish, sweet and honest, because of the business ties the families have. Then, there's Michelle, who is an exciting, extrovert party girl.
The rest of the movie deals with Leonard havinng interactions with both of the women, while dealing with his own demons. The question is: Is it better to go with the person you know who is best for you, or the person you want?
Joaquin's performance stole the show in this one. This movie is honestly one of the most honest depictions of depression and bipolar disorder I've ever seen in a movie. I have no doubt that Joaquin will be able to portray Joker (or Arthur) as a realisticly mentally ill person.

The Immigrant (2013):
Why?: Another Gray-Phoenix collaboration, in which a young Polish immigrant woman named Ewa arrives in New York in the 1920s. Since Ewa needs money to help her sick sister be freed from Ellis Island, she decides to work for Bruno, a Jewish man who runs a theater. Bruno does pay her and the other girls. Only later does Ewa learn that Bruno's theater is actually the front for a brothel. Both Bruno and Bruno's estranged brother, Emil, develop feelings for Ewa.
This movie is complicated. Ewa is the real hero of the story, but are Bruno and Emil heroes as well? Does Bruno really love Ewa or is he using her? And does Emil have good intentions?
I highly reccomend this movie. Questions aside, Joaquin is familiar with playing seriously morally ambigous people. Oh, and Jeremy Renner is in this one, too.
