So before anime my first love had always been cartoons, I only recently watched Hey Arnold! recently (I blame betaruga's art I've been sucked in ever since) and its been a hyperfixation for months now. I wanted to make a comic based on one of my fave fics of Shortaki.

I wanted to show my appreciation via this project, which has been fun and challenging so far (tell ya what my environment and angling of panels have never looked as good lmao). And I have fallen in love with pencil textures.

I’ve done this before long ago but I’m going to take this in a different direction this time and talk about characters for various reasons

Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan): when I started this series recently, everyone told me I would love Levi, everyone loves Levi. I went into this determined not to feed into that expectation, but look where I am now. In my opinion, he has never done or said anything wrong

Bulma (Dragon Ball): due to fanon and a recent series which shall not be named, this lady is not usually at the top of my interests. BUT have you seen Dragon Ball Bulma? The bratty, selfish, thirsting teenage genius just looking to take advantage of a dumb hick kid to get what she needs? Because I do, and I love those qualities of hers

Fred & George Weasley (Harry Potter): these guys were hilarious and had the best attitude even when the odds were against them, even raising Harry’s spirits in some of his worst moments. Their antics helped me through what (to me) was the least interesting part of the HP series, but from beginning to end, definitely my faves

Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia): I usually don’t have a lot of love for the mean, angry guy who’s actually a real softy beneath all the yelling and insults, to be honest. But this guy won me over somehow

Hatake Kakashi (Naruto): okay, so he’s the same one I always talk about with Naruto. But when it comes to Naruto with me, it’s always been Kakashi, Kakashi, Kakashi right from the beginning

Itadori Yuji (Jujutsu Kaisen): one of few shounen protagonists I genuinely love! He is so sweet, a little self-conscious, but also extremely self aware and just genuinely cares for the people around him. I can’t say enough about him

Peter Petrelli (Heroes): the main guy in the series, and idk how many of you may remember it bc it’s not available anywhere lately and I’ve been so tempted to rewatch! But his excitement at learning of his powers and boyish desire to be a hero and save everyone combined with his really op abilities really kept me invested in him

Piccolo (DBZ): not Goku for once (don’t worry he’s still my favorite). BUT I wanted to talk about Piccolo here bc I’m seeing a pattern in all the anime I currently enjoy and realizing if I was only introduced to DBZ just now instead of when I was a teen, there’s a good chance he could’ve been my favorite. His dry humor and personality have always been enjoyable, I just liked Goku better (and first)

Chris Keller (Oz): also a series I expect most of my mutuals don’t know, but soooo good. It’s dark and graphic, but if that’s not a problem for you, I highly recommend. Chris especially is manipulative and cruel, but also charismatic and sexy which just makes him a dangerous character for a lot of people. So entertaining to watch

Joker (Batman): he has been and always will be my favorite Batman character. I also love his whole thing with Harley Quinn, but he is so twisted and clever, such a challenge for Batman in every version of his existence over the years

This book -  大全集 5 (pictured above) is worthy of being called a Guide Book to Dragon Ball! There are a lot of details about the backstories/inside stories within the series, including *that* rumored scene…

As I thought, Goku and ChiChi really did kiss!

The words in the red box clearly state ‘a kiss…’ In the anime, the TV screen only showed their feet/legs (and Turtle Hermit quietly watching them…) so it wasn’t clear whether or not they actually kissed…!!

But the scene was reenacted with the Dragonball Capsules.

It is also supported by the Dragon Ball Complete Works. And later on remained in DB Kai : Toriyama’s cut.

And now… the translation of dbs manga itself.

“Goku literally says that Trunks puts his mouth against Mai’s mouth  (“kuchi to kuchi kuttsukeru” = place mouths together), but his “yoku” is giving me trouble here, because it can either be translated as “nicely/skillfully/well” or “frequent/often”.  To me it seems like Goku is simply refering to it coming off as a natural thing for Trunks to do. Vegeta then says: “You… don’t know about that?” Goku: “Mh? About what?” Vegeta: “(About) that kiss(ing)…” Goku’s “attarimee daro” can either mean “Well, of course?!” or “It’s a common thing to do, right?!” Vegeta: (not stating WHO he is talking about) “…aren’t you married?” or possibly even “…they aren’t married?” refering to Trunks and Mai (they are in the panel after all.) Goku: “Huh? Has that something to do with this?” Like… I honestly don’t know what the whole point of this conversation is.

Are they completely talking past each other? Is Vegeta an idiot? Maybe Vegeta is like: “Duh, Bakarotto, why you so surprised two people put their mouths against each other?! You damn hick. You don’t know about that?! That’s what they call a kiss.” and Goku: “Yeah, of course I do, because it is a common thing.” I don’t even think this is about the momma-birding and more about Vegeta thinking Goku’s dumb and Vegeta being being uptight or even prude, because he doesn’t wat to continue the conversation, dissmissing it with an “Enough!”.

So, what Western audiences may not know, is that Japanese is a very contextual language, and if two people are having a conversation and assuming they’re referring to the same subject, but they’re not, they may not even realize it and walk away with a complete misunderstanding–it doesn’t help that in Japanese, usually, the context is implied, so if two people aren’t on the same page, misunderstandings can occur often. In the anime AND the manga, the “joke” is that Goku and Vegeta misunderstand each other due to this aspect of the Japanese language. For the anime, most English and Japanese fans who logically concluded that, even with Goku’s childhood, common sense must prevail, and that the idea that Goku has never kissed Chichi after 20+ years of marriage and fathering two children with her–or that Chichi never even taught him what a kiss was or continued to remain ignorant of it when exposed to TV or public outings, figured that Goku was referring to Trunks momma-birding Mai–while Vegeta thought he was referring to kissing. In the manga, Goku balks at the idea of not knowing what a “kiss” is, because it’s a very common thing. Like, duh, Vegeta. Interestingly, Vegeta’s option for translation here, since Goku has already stated he knows what kissing is, is to wonder aloud “…Trunks and Mai aren’t married?” which might imply that Vegeta has a more conservative view on kissing, or is wondering aloud about, after seeing his son kiss Mai, if they’re married. When Goku asks,  “Huh? Has that something to do with this?” the most sensible interpretation after what’s just been said, would be that Goku doesn’t see how kissing is something that is necessarily exclusive to marriage, so he wonders why Vegeta would even pose the question. Before this though, Goku describes the literal description of kissing and with some awe, the manner in which Trunks does it–he hasn’t seen Trunks do it before now (which dismisses the “frequently/often” translation option) so Goku’s probably mentioning the natural manner in which Trunks “puts his lips up against her’s”, and in front of company in such a public and casual display of affection–all of which seems to have surprised Goku. The most logical interpretation of Goku’s response here would probably imply that he just doesn’t kiss Chichi in public or do PDA really, and thus the casual way Trunks “kisses” Mai in front of him and Vegeta strikes him as a culture shock. (which fits with the manga–and in the anime he’s only physically affectionate when they’re 1) alone or 2) around close friends or family)   Honestly, this is the truth.
