So there’s a trope in Chinese dramas where a female character interacts with a male character for 0.2 seconds and becomes absolutely obsessed with him, which sends her down the path of the evil supporting female character doing anything and everything she can to get his attention or going on a raging rampage because he doesn’t return her feelings. I’m looking at you Zhang Bihan from Serenade of Peaceful Joy and Min’er from Under the Power.

(kind of long/not very coherent ramblings and spoilers under the cut)

Like I KNOW the fact that this character archetype exists because these women live in a world where they have have so little power and choices, and sometimes the only way to assert their agency is getting the man they want the way they want, but I wish dramas would actually deconstruct that sometimes instead of playing it so straight. Min’er in Under the Power does get redeemed slightly in the end but she also then dies immediately after which defeats the whole redemption.

I don’t know. I’m sure there must be dramas that approach this type of character thoughtfully. Oh My General...sort of tried? with Liu Xiyin (funnily also played by Wang Churan who plays Zhang Bihan) but I’m not sure it quite hit the mark. Admittedly Xiyin’s unhealthy obsession with Ye Zhao is not quite the same as Bihan or Min’er. It’s just that right now I’m just being bombarded with Min’er and Zhang Bihan in quick succession and they’re both so unpleasant and infuriating that it just feels overwhelming.

I am now in a perpetual state of screaming this at guanjia:
