ESCAPE TO SURIGAO DEL SUR!
Who says you can only get summer feels during the summer season? As a banker by day and a student by night, the week long semester break is probably one of the most awaited breaks of the year. To make the most out of last year's sembreak, we drove all the way to Surigao del Sur! Surigao del Sur is a 6-hour drive from Cagayan de Oro. However, it took us around 10 hours to arrive at the destination because of the stops we made at Gingoog City for lunch and in Butuan City to take a short rest and visit their Robinsons Mall and their famous Margie's bakeshop. Should you have time to make a quick visit in Butuan City, do drop by Margie's bakeshop and try their goodies. Their mango cream and oatmeal thins are my personal favorites! We left Cagayan de Oro at 7:00AM and arrived in Britania at around 5:00PM. We checked in at La Entrada Beach Resort where we had made a reservation prior to arrival. There were better and cheaper accommodations available around the place. Rooms at La Entrada are at P1,800 for two people while the LGU offers decent rooms with a rate of P1,000. Like the usual, additional rate is charged for extra persons. The LGU rooms are also nearer the departure area for island hopping activity. As to the food, we opted to have our food cooked by the local houses for P500-P600. Upon arrival, we had dinner and took an early rest to prepare for the next day's early start of our tour. TOUR DAY 1:        BRITANIA GROUP OF ISLANDS AND TINUY-AN FALLS 05:00AM        Wake up and have breakfast 06:00AM        Start of island hopping 11:00AM        End of island hopping / preparing to leave for the next destination 12:00PM        Travel to Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig 01:30PM        Arrival at Tinuy-an Falls 04:00PM        Leave for Sibadan Fish Cage in Hinatuan It is highly recommended to start the island hopping activity early to enjoy the trip under the not-so-hot daylight. We had our lunch cooked ahead by a local house and enjoyed it at Boslon Island, the last island stop. On our second night in SDS, we stayed at Sibadan Fish Cage. It is a wooden restaurant situated in the middle of the sea which also offers accommodations with fan room rates at around P600. They also have a few air conditioned rooms and a function room for large groups. To get to Sibadan Fish Cage, you will have to ride a small boat at Port Lamon for P100 good for 4-5 persons. It is just a 10-minute boat ride from the port. If you ever bring a car, you can leave it with the barangay officials. They have a parking lot outside the barangay hall and all cars parked overnight are properly logged in their monitoring book. If my memory serves me well, they charge a fee of P50. DAY 2:        ENCHANTED RIVER AND HINATUAN ISLAND TOUR 06:00AM        Wake up and have breakfast 07:30AM        Leave for Enchanted River 12:00NN        Hinatuan Island Tour 03:00PM        Check-in at Pacific View Resort in Hinatuan Again, it is highly recommended to be at Enchanted River early to avoid the crowd especially on weekends. We arrived at around 8:00AM and there was already a high volume of people inside. Personally, the Enchanted River was not so enchanting. It is just a typical river with a small swimming area for guests to enjoy. As what I have heard and read from other people and blogs, what makes the river enchanting is the fact that nobody has discovered where it ends and a fish that can't be caught. Such tale did not enchant me. Haha! We originally planned to just visit the famous Britania Group of Islands, Tinuy-an Falls and Enchanted River. However, our boatman enthusiastically suggested to take us on a quick tour around Hinatuan. We were able to visit the Vanishing Island (this one's more enchanting than the Enchanted River, I swear!!),  Sarsoza Ponta Cave and the Pacific View Resort. We were supposed to be driving back to CDO but the Pacific View Resort was too inviting that we decided to stay another night in Surigao del Sur. The resort is situated in an island and they offer spacious fan rooms at a fair price of P1,200 good for 4 people. They also have rooms good for two people at a lower price. The resort gave us that exclusive island feeling since there were only a few people checked-in at that time. The resort's electricity source only comes from their generators and it is only turned on at 5pm-5am but it didn't really matter since we spent the rest of the day at the beach. The additional unplanned expense was truly worth it. It was the best way to conclude our trip. We hired only one boatman for our entire stay in Hinatuan. We paid I think a total of P600 for the to and from Sibadan Fish Cage, short Hinatuan Island Tour and the pick-up from Pacific View Resort. We left the resort at 7:00AM the next day and drove back to Cagayan de Oro. We stopped at Duka Bay Resort for two hours to have lunch and a short rest. Should you be traveling back to CDO via road, Duka Bay Resort in Medina is also a good place to pay a quick visit! Aside from the good food they serve, they also offer spacious and convenient rooms for those who wish to stay for a night or two and other water activities everyone could enjoy. EXPENSES I do not remember the exact figures but I am certain that we only spent P4,000 per head for the four days and three nights we stayed in Surigao del Sur. The expenses includes gasoline to and from Cagayan de Oro, accommodation for three nights, boat rentals, food, entrance fees and tips. The long road trip and early call time was over-all worth the money and time. The food were fresh and great, the beaches were superb and the locals were very friendly and accommodating. A quick trip to Surigao del Sur is surely a sweet escape from reality.
