Broad-billed hummingbird / colibrí pico ancho (Cynanthus latirostris) and native salvia. Note how the flower's anthers contact the hummingbird's bill, depositing pollen to be delivered to the next salvia blossom the bird visits. At Tohono Chul, Tucson, Arizona.

Desert Gem by Todd Wynia Via Flickr: This is a broad-billed hummingbird surveying his territory at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. I was apparently not welcome because just after this shot he came flying straight at me squeaking the whole way and narrowly missing my head. I love the rich colors of this guy to go along with that red lipstick.

This handsome boy is a male broadbilled hummingbird, a species that spends their winters in central and South America and their summers….
In northern Mexico and some parts of the southwestern US. They rarely go much further north than Tucson, although in recent years with climate change some ranges are shifting. (We also once had a migrating broadbill we’d banded get blown off course over the Gulf of Mexico and get documented in *Louisiana*. Buddy was SUPER lost.)
He’s also been mashing his face into flowers, as shown by the pollen all over. He’s a regular at our site, and we’ve been seeing him at least once most sessions for the last year or so during their season.
Hummingbirds are VERY “site loyal”; they have an excellent memory of where they’ve found food in the past, and as long there’s still food there, they’ll return year after year. It’s dramatic enough that our site will see the same birds returning with our bands, but won’t see birds with bands from the nearby San Pedro river site, while they have the same trend - their already banded recaptures are birds recorded at their site, but they don’t see our birds.

Broadbill on Beige by Todd Wynia Via Flickr: A female broad-billed hummingbird emerges from the shadows at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. If I were to choose my perfect bokeh, it would not be beige, but living in the desert there tends to be a bit of beige around. So you shoot what you see. At least the hummingbird brings a sparkle of green to the scene.
