Pokemon Card of the Day #2926: Dunsparce (Celestial Storm)

If this Dunsparce looks really familiar to you, that's because it is. The Dunsparce that made it into so many decks in 2004 and 2005 from the Sandstorm set was reprinted in 2018's Celestial Storm set. The function was the same, and there was no limit placed on the kinds of Basic Pokemon you could get. The game, of course, had changed, as the game was much faster and you couldn't attack if going first on your first turn. These put Dunsparce in a much rougher spot to do its job, and yet three Basic Pokemon was still a big help for some decks in theory.

The stats weren't impressive at all. 50 HP was not hard to reach, and if Dunsparce didn't pivot out after a Strike and Run it was usually giving up a Prize. The Fighting Weakness was a pain in its own right if you happened to start with Dunsparce going first, as the opponent could just smack a Dunsparce with Buzzwole if playing that sort of deck to take it out before anything was accomplished. The Retreat Cost was 1, which was at least reasonable.

Strike and Run cost a Colorless Energy. While it did no damage, it did search your deck for up to 3 Basic Pokemon to put onto your Bench. You then could switch Dunsparce with 1 of your Benched Pokemon if you wanted. Decks in this era typically had enough ways to search for Pokemon, whether it was by Supporters, Ultra Ball or Nest Ball, Mysterious Treasure, Brooklet Hill, Ultra Space, or whatever else was available in various situations. It was still good if you went second and needed to set up a bunch of Pokemon, such as filling up your Bench with Inkay and potential attackers or getting some Poipole in play to accelerate with Naganadel.

Sudden Flash was just 10 damage with a flip for Paralysis for a single Colorless Energy. This could be used for desperate stalling but not much else, and was worse than the attack was originally in a much different sort of game.

Dunsparce was originally one of the best set-up Pokemon out there. The return 15 years later was very different, as Dunsparce saw almost no play in a format that restricted early attacks and had plenty of ways to fetch Pokemon. Quite a few decks didn't need a lot of Pokemon on the Bench either. If you went second and needed a bunch of Pokemon, Dunsparce was still pretty good. If you went first, then Dunsparce was probably going to be a bit slower than what you'd really want.

Squirt has a pretty funny story behind her. Many years ago during my first run of the Brooklet Hill trial I accidentally fell into the water with my backpack on. After thrashing around a bit and crawling out my backpack felt a lot heavier than before, which I thought was just all the water weighing it down now. Lana was nice enough to let me go dry off before retrying and an hour or so later I realized I should check to make sure the stuff in my bag wasn't all ruined.

As usual I'm going to recommend most major Alolan beaches since those are monitored by lifeguards, so it's safer if something goes wrong. But since you've got a good number of pokemon who (I assume) can swim, you should be fine most places. Melemele sea and Kala'e bay are nice spots.

I guess I have stronger opinion on places that are less good as swimming spots. Brooklet hill is quite pleasant, but it's both a fishing spot and a trial area, so there aren't many times and spots that are good. The surfing beaches are pretty good to swim at, but you do need to be extra careful to avoid getting run over by surfers. Hano beach is nice for lounging on, but if you don't want kids pelting you with Pyukumuku I'd swim somewhere else. Poni breaker coast is not worth it. The waves look fun but trust me, you don't want to end up getting dragged across those rocks. It hurts a lot.
