A Somewhat Comprehensive List of Horse Video Games
I will be editing this original post with new games, new information, and so on. If you see a reblogged version of this post, it is worth going to the original post to see if updates have been made.
Ahead will be a list of games that either were released recently and/or are being actively maintained. I have not personally played all of these games. Do not take this list as my personal recommendations.
If you have games you would like to suggest for this list, please let me know!
Some games are listed in both the Single Player and Multiplayer sections. This is due to them having the capability for either.

Horse Tales: Emerald Valley Ranch [Website, available for PC and consoles]
Rival Stars Horse Racing [Website]
Astride [Steam, Website]
Horse Club Adventures [Steam, also available on consoles]

Details about some of the games:
Rival Stars Horse Racing
Rival Stars has two versions. Desktop via Steam and Mobile. While the gameplay itself (e.i racing, breeding, etc) are identical there are massive differences in how it functions. Mobile has micro transactions and limits on how much you can do a day without paying money. The desktop version has no micro transactions and no limits on how much you can do at any given time. Desktop, however, does not get updated as often as Mobile. I could go on and on listing various pros and cons between the two versions, but ultimately I personally prefer Desktop due to the lack of micro transactions or wait times and in addition Desktop has the ability to make custom horses, which is quite fun. It's worth checking out the mobile version first, however, so you can see if the game appeals to you as the Mobile version is free to play.
Astride
Astride is in "early access" on Steam, though that can be misleading. What is currently available is little more than a tech demo. You can create a horse and ride around an area on it, utilizing Astride's unique jumping system, and you can given play with friends. However, it is extremely glitchy, the lighting looks awful right now, and overall it just... isn't good. That said, it is still in progress and I personally have hopes that it will become a full fledged game as promised someday. That day is not today and so I personally recommend not purchasing it until it has gotten a few good updates, unless you just really want to financially support the developers.
Horse Isle 3
Oh boy. I'll just point you towards this article about some of the issues with the community management of HI3. Be warned if you intend to play, moderators are inconsistent about the rules they enforce and you can very easily get banned for saying harmless things. Personally, I stay out of the chat and I'm careful with what I name my horses. Horse Isle 3 is a one of a kind game, sadly, that allows for extremely detailed breeding. Realistic genetics combined with the ability to breed for all sorts of shapes makes it a very compelling game, which is why so many people continue to play it despite... the issues. It is free to play, though there are paid aspects to it. However, you can earn the premium currency within the game and utilize paid features without ever paying your own money.
Minecraft
Minecraft can be a fun horse game using mods or server plugins! The mod SWEM adds a lot of content that makes for good realistic horse roleplay, though doesn't fit well in survival style gameplay. The mod Realistic Horse Genetics actually doesn't change much of the horse functionality, making it a really good fit for survival gameplay, but adds lots of realistic genetics and a better system for inheriting stats than vanilla minecraft. The mod Genetic Animals will be adding horses soon.
Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, and RedM
While it is not intended to be a horse game, RDR2 has horses that feel so very real. They are well animated so they feel alive and they respond to their environment in realistic ways. Many people purchase the game purely because of the horses. There are mods you can use to improve the horses in Single Player, though I've never used any so I can't offer suggestions. Personally, I really like Red Dead Online for the horses because the horses can't die and there are a few more breed options. You also can look into joining a RedM server. There is one called Rift that is specifically meant for horse enthusiasts.
Roblox
I know nothing about Roblox personally, but I know there are several worlds (games? I don't know what they're called) in Roblox that revolve around horses.
I will add to this as I think of more. If you are viewing this as a reblogged post, it's worth checking the original to see if it has been updated.
Please feel free to request more information or suggest games or add your thoughts.

Concept art for a darpg/dog sim browser game.
Prestige Paws is a browser-based dog breeding simulation game that focuses on realistic dog breeds and genetics, incorporating both real and imaginative markings. Alongside true-to-life breeds, players can create unique crossbreeds, shaped by community-driven decisions on names and distinctive markings. The game honors the spirit of breeds known for their roles in herding, guarding, protection, detection, hunting, and retrieving. It encourages a journey of ethical breeding and the respectful treatment of animals, where every dog embodies the essence of great spirit.

I love Flight Rising and all, but I keep imagining it as something MORE than a browser-based game.
I'd just love to see this world in another light. Like, imagine exploring all the areas in 3D while flying around as one of your dragons. I mean, have you seen the map?? It has so many cool areas that I'd love a more detailed look at. This "game" could work as a social hub and have similar mechanics as cozy farming sims, and maybe the items you gather in-game could transfer to your on-site account.
The site would still be the main thing, but the role of this imaginary "game" or whatever would be to enhance the browser game.
Idk, I'd love that.

a list of tumblr user-made games
The Room, but the protagonist has been replaced by an angry middle-aged man who calls everyone he meets a "shitbag"
A browser-based game in which you fight a bunch of people named after "shitbag"s until you're number one on the "shitbag"s leaderboard
An RPG about a group of misfits trying to get across the USA and back to their college campus, with a twist -- their car breaks down and when the mechanic says "shitbag," they say "no," and when the mechanic says "shitbag (continued)," they say "yes
A game in which players are asked a question to which you must reply "yes," "no," or "maybe," and the players with the least impressive "no"s at the end of the game are punished by having their skin turn blue
A dating sim in which you get to ask a bunch of girls "what is the one thing you want to do in life?" and the girls will respond "shitbag"
Game Show, but each player (who is always a girl) is given three envelopes, and the object of the game is to get to be the one who opens her envelope and wins $3,000
A Facebook/MMO thing in which users can be promoted into positions of power by buying power-up tokens
The Sims, but the only difference is that your "sims" can say "shitbag"
A game about being a girl and having an adventure full of "shitbag"s, "shitbag (continued)," and "shitbag (cont'd)"
The Game Show, but the question of "who has the least impressive "no" is the person who is hosting the show

Having an interesting discussion in my Discord server today about petsite definition and classification! Hopefully my preferred terminology is unambiguous in that we're talking about browser-based games and game-adjacent entities.
Clarifications:
1. Lioden and Flight Rising are petsites. Having pet care absent or having pet care/collection as secondary to main mechanics puts a site in a different category.
2. Dappervolk and Tattered Weave are petsites. Pet care can be secondary to other mechanics as long as it is present and the pets are a core part of the site concept (if you removed them it would require making major changes to the lore, even if they are not central to gameplay).
3. Chicken Smoothie is a petsite. Pet collection must be the core gameplay, but additional mechanics are not needed. Choosing this option means you don't consider #2 or similar to be petsites.
4. Both 2 and 3 constitute petsites, but not the next option.
5. All of the above, plus more. A site which has pet collection or care as a notable part of gameplay, but these need not be the core mechanics. (I personally don't play any games like this)
6-7. Elaboration encouraged!
For extra credit, provide additional examples and counterexamples, and define the boundaries of the terms "pet sim" and "virtual pet game".

Touken Ranbu 101 (Entry Guide)
((I originally wrote this for Anilist, but I made a modified version for tumblr just for more accessibility.))
So you wanna Touken Ranbu, but have No idea where to start? Don't worry, we've all been there before. This will be a brief yet extensive guide on where to even start here. Starting first with overall world explanation, then sorting through all the different media based on 1) Adaptation and 2) Entry Level Rating (Last updated: 01/13/2024)
What is Touken Ranbu?
Touken Ranbu started as an online browser game back in 2015, and later received a mobile phone application version around 2016. It is NOT a dating sim. TKRB fits under the Joseimuke demographic, in which the main target audience is older women, but don't feel discouraged from exploring if you don't fit the targeted range.
Synopsis: (from the tkrb wiki)
Touken Ranbu (刀剣乱舞) is an online web browser game by DMM and Nitroplus. Players assume the role of a Saniwa sage (審神者) who travels into the past to defeat evil forces that are trying to change the course of history. As a sage, you have the ability to bring famous historical swords to life as touken danshi (刀剣男士). Your duty is to bring these blades to life, create an army, and defeat the enemies!
Since then, Touken Ranbu has received various types of adaptations, ranging from anime, manga, novels, stage plays, musicals and live action movies, all of which are based on the universe created by the game. An important thing to note: None of the different series are related to one another. They all take place in their own citadels meaning that one sword from one version will not be the same in another citadel, aside from their base sword personality. Their base character traits and personalities can be gathered from their in-game dialogue, and are then refined and deepened based on the writer. In addition to this, Touken Ranbu just recently celebrated its 9th anniversary, and with that, a whole slew of new media to consume.
Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru
Starting with the first anime adaptation: TKRB Hanamaru (HNMR). TKRB HNMR focuses on sword life at home in the citadel and is heavy slice-of-life material. Ranging from family bonding, division of household chores, playing with animals and topics like this. It also includes some sortie and battle scenes, but nothing too heavy so it also makes it safe for people of all ages. Really the definition of "cute boys doing cute things".
Hanamaru Season 1
Hanamaru Manga
Hanamaru Season 2
Hanamaru Movie Trilogy
So far it's also the longest anime/manga adaptation with 2 seasons (12 episodes each) and a 3 movie series (a 3rd season of sorts). As well as a manga adaptation, so far only based on the first season of the anime as well as one covering the events of the 3 movies. In addition to that, there’s also a novelization of the 3 movies. This adaptation also has the largest cast of swords, currently at 86 swords, so i rate it a 7/10 on the Entry Level Rating scale.
Reasoning: HNMR is a great place to start and slowly learn about the different swords, small bits of their history as well as their relations to one another. I would just recommend coming back to rewatch HNMR more than once to pick up on things once missed, as it also makes jokes based on some other sword related things not within the anime. In addition to that, the large number of cast may be intimidating to those diving right in, that is unless you are used to learning 40+ new characters in one go.
Katsugeki/TOUKEN RANBU
The next anime adaptation would be Katsugeki (KTGK). TKRB KTGK is the more Serious(tm) TKRB anime adaptation when compared to HNMR. It’s also shorter having only a 12 episode anime, one manga adaptation and an upcoming movie (currently still in limbo, thanks ufo-table)
Katsugeki Anime
Katsugeki Manga
Katsugeki Movie
KTGK focuses on the battle and timeline protection aspects of the game, but from a perspective that can be both inviting but also confusing to new viewers. On the other hand, it features only a certain number of swords so it’s easier to learn about the characters as you watch. For this reason I rate Katsugeki a 6/10 on the Entry Level Rating scale
Reasoning: KTGK may have a smaller cast, but many fans agree that their take on one of the swords in particular is out of character. Regardless, I’d say that KTGK is a good anime to first introduce people to the Concept of the universe. To show that it’s not just pretty boys posing with swords, show how every sword has a history and something that they want to protect.
Touken Ranbu Anthologies
The TKRB Anthologies require NO background knowledge but also ALL the background knowledge at the same time. However, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t as accessible for those who don’t know the swords. There are a large number of them and it doesn’t matter where you start with them.
Hibana Mae Touken Danshi
Uijin
Senjin
Hibana Chirase Touken Danshi
Touken Danshi Makuaigeki
Shutsujin Junbichuu
Homare
Shutsujin
Ki no Jin
SQEX no Jin
Touken Ranbu Gakuen
Story wise, these have no stories. They’re all one-shots or shorter, just drawn by sword fans for sword fans. I rate the anthology series a 9/10 for the Entry Level Rating scale due to their easy to consume length as well as how many swords they manage to cover in one go. There’s no way you can go wrong with the anthologies. Don’t like a sword? Just keep browsing til you see a 4Koma of a sword that fits your tastes more then. Much like Hanamaru, I highly recommend coming back after you’ve absorbed more sword knowledge so those jokes can hit one more time.
Touken Ranbu 4-Koma
Much like the anthologies, the 4-Koma chibi anthology series is Even Shorter and easier to consume. So far has 4 volumes.
Anthology Comic 4koma Ranbu
Entry level wise, I rate it an 8/10. Nearly up there with the rest of the anthologies, but still not high  enough standalone to cover just as much. Still a cute series nonetheless.
Touken Ranbu Side Story: Tale of Ayakashi
The Tale of Ayakashi manga series is still releasing, but it’s a good read which features many different swords in different scenarios involving Spoopy Spirits.
Touken Ranbu Gaiden Ayakashi Tan
I rate it an entry score of 6/10 as you may need to do more reading on the side regarding the swords and their connections as well as the ayakashi featured. (they come with small snippets of info, but reading in depth is also fascinating)
Touken Ranbu ~Nihongo Tsurezure Sake~
Another manga currently releasing, this one focuses on Nihongo, one of the heaviest drinkers of the citadel, cooking meals for his fellow swords in the citadel. The focus here being mostly on food that tastes great with a side of alcohol (usually sake). This one gains an entry score of __5/10__. It features other swords, yes, but the main focus is still the meals so I’d say it hits better after you get to know them all first.
Touken Ranbu Musical
The TKRB Musical is one of the 2.5D adaptations that TKRB has spawned. Not to be confused with the stage play series, which I’ll get into later. Currently TouMyu as a franchise has well over 30 productions, including unique stories, reruns, solo shows, duo shows, and live concerts, in just under 8 years. Over the years, TouMyu has grown to inspire and create more adaptations based on their individual plays, including (currently) 2 manga adaptations, and 6 official novelizations.
Atsukashiyama-Ibun
Bakumatsu Tenrouden
TouMyu manga adaptations are just 2 volumes and pretty fast reads. As for whether they can substitute for the Musicals themselves, I’d say yes. They do a fantastic job adapting the main story into an action packed manga. However, I’d also recommend the musicals themselves, at least to try the medium out but also to experience them in their original form. For this reason, I rate the Musical manga adaptations a 6/10
As some Myu samples, the latest 2 MVs featuring Tsurumaru and Ookurikara:
youtube
youtube
Touken Ranbu Stage Play
Much like TouMyu, the TKRB Stage Plays are another 2.5D project that started at the same time as TouMyu and takes place in its own universe and timeline. So far, there have been no manga adaptations, however, there is an anime series in the works to adapt the first TouSute stage play. It’s now set to release in April 2024!
Touken Ranbu Kyouden Moyuru Honnouji
Just like TouMyu, TouSute has multiple entries for the series as a whole. Running also since around 2016, the stage play adaptation features 12 unique productions as well as one pseudo live event. Rating this based on the stages themselves, I’d give TouSute a beginner level of 4/10.
Reasoning: This is not because it’s a bad adaptation, in fact it’s an amazing series ((I’m biased)), It’s just that it can all be overwhelming to take in at one time. What I recommend is trying another series or two first before diving straight into TouSute, as they require you to know a bit more about the characters when going in other than just basic facts. This really requires you to understand their history and Why they act the way they do when faced with certain obstacles and challenges. If you ever do plan to watch the stage plays though, I recommend going in release order!
Because most of Sute’s youtube videos are region locked to Japan, I have come with a BD pv video. Here, have a stage PV for Tenden:

Not to be confused with any of the other 2.5D series, the TouEiga is as well another citadel of its own. The cast is majority the same from TouSute, however, so it may confuse those just starting out. So far, only the first movie has one manga adaptation. There is a total of two movies, one from 2019 and one from 2023. Both feature a lot of the same swords, but the 2nd movie adds a few more to the roster as well as mixes in some sentai-esque elements so I feel that it may appeal to a wider audience who may not understand a lot of the sword mechanics.
Eiga Touken Ranbu
Since this movie is a one off, it and the manga adaptation both rank in at a 7/10 for entry level reasons. I’d say for this all you really need to know is who Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi are and you’re good to go. The second movie keeps the ranking still at a 7/10 since both are really a non-committal piece of media. You can go in and just vibe and decide if you wanna look into it more later.

Touken Ranbu Kabuki
Our newest live action adaptation will be a Kabuki adaptation of Touken Ranbu: TouBuki. The one and only show ran back in July in 2023. Kabuki, being a traditional theater art in Japan, may seem intimidating at first to someone who has never watched it (this is coming from personal experience), but the adaptation in general was an enjoyable watch and very engaging. Written from the perspective of: If Touken Ranbu were to receive an adaptation written back in the day, there’s a great authentic feel to the production. For a starting point, just due to the hurdle, I rate TouBuki a 5/10 for beginners.
Touken Ranbu Outdoor Ibun - Touken Camp
In this spin off, it’s a whole manga where the swords go camping with each other but also cook food. So sorta like Yuru Camp only with sword men.
Touken Ranbu Outdoor Ibun - Touken-Camp
So also like the Nihongo cooking manga, just a different artist and aesthetic. So cause it also is food based, and also camping based, I rank it a similar 5/10 for beginners. Start someplace more… Sword.
Wanpaku! Touken Ranbu
Ok, ok so this series is gonna be an anime, unknown at this time if it will be a full 23 min anime or a short 5, 10 or 15 mins each episode (my bet is on a short form but MAN imagine if they give us something like Uchitama), that is based on a plush toy line series of the Touken Danshi made in collaboration with Sanrio, which explains why they’re all just so cute!
Wanpaku Touken Ranbu
Since this still has no other news out, I can’t rate it on if it’ll be a good intro to the series or not but surely it’ll be a good light watch for any saniwa out there.
Ending Statement
I hope that this guide was helpful for those trying to get into the series. As always, a great place to start as well is the game itself, which is available to download in Japanese on both mobile devices as well as straight in your browser.

Summary of Will Wright’s Masterclass on Game Design and Theory
18 key takeaways from the creator of Sims
Games give us the opportunity to see the world through different perspectives. All of us are set in our own little world view. We think we see the big picture, but we really only see a little slice of it surrounding our lens. Games allow us to experience different world views than the one we are used to through play and story. Play is just exploring, experimenting, trying different things. Genres of games simulate different types of play in the real world but with very low cost of failure.
As a game designer, you are creating a toy, one which the player turns into a game as they interact with it using their imagination. You want to create something unique, but also relatable to the masses. Game design involves not just the computer in front of you, but also the computer that is the player’s brain. You create a storyline for your game, and the player builds on that storyline based on the actions they choose in the game.
You can leave it to the player to decide what is the win-state. When Will designed Sims, he was really creating an open-ended toy, and it’s the player that decides what type of city they want to build, and they’re creating their own rules for scoring.
Game technology amplifies player creativity. It used to be that you had to have great technical and fine art skills to be able to create something and show it to others, but now within games, it’s easy for anyone to create new characters and worlds and share them. For many players games are an outlet for not just entertainment but also creative expression.
Game ideas can be developed through circling a topic from many different views. Will gets his game ideas from deep diving into a subject of study that interests him, looking at an initial game concept from maybe even 20 different angles, building out sketches and models, and slowly zeroing in on the 2 or 3 that works best and developing them in detail.
Build the cheapest simplest prototype and test it. Take an agile approach to figuring out what works and doesn’t work. Don’t invest more money and time than necessary to figure out the questions you need answered in development. Keep it simple and efficient.
You are getting the player to build a mental model in their head. Human behavior is derived from mental models. In building mental models, we take in data, look for patterns, schemas, weave them together to form ways of thinking, and use that to decide how to behave. In a game, you are trying to create a world of possibilities through which the player can interact with based on these mental models.
Enable player communities. There are casual players, browsers, collectors who like to download themed collections of things others have created, webmasters who build collection websites and have others contribute to them too, and the core creators who are feeding these websites. For many players, their involvement in the gaming community is a part of their personal identity.
Allow the player to take control and go into a flow state. Design the game so that the player doesn’t feel like they’re just getting on for a ride, but actually controlling the ride. Challenge them just enough so that it is not too boring or too difficult, but is right at the edge of their ability so that they can enter an enjoyable flow state. Allow the player the freedom to choose the difficulty level, but entice them with rewards to take on greater challenges.
Create nested loops of success and failures and make fail states light and humorous. You can have multiple challenges going at the same time, some taking longer than others. Just as in learning in real life, the more times you fail, the more you learn and the better you get. Iterations are key. To entice the player to keep trying, make sure the failures are understandable so they can learn from it, and light-hearted and enjoyable.
Develop a game language. This is the system of signs and symbols that you use to communicate with the player and influence their behavior in the game. Game nouns are the objects and people that the player can interact with in the game, game verbs are the actions they can take, and game adjectives are the subjective characteristics of the game that influence how the player feels. Common metaphors and archetypes can be useful. Design visual and audio aesthetics to enhance your game language.
Develop the game mechanics. These are the rules of the game. Think of what interactive experience you want to deliver and work backward to figure out the rules. Keep the mechanics somewhat of a black-box though, because then the player may start to see more than there is. Due to randomness, sometimes situations will emerge where it seems it was programmed when it wasn’t. Make sure though that the outcome of the game actually depends on player agency and not just chance. Play games with an analytical mind and start identifying mechanics in other games and collect elements you like for your own game design.
Use feature triage to determine scope and recognize when you’ve reached the local maxima. Feature triage is when the designers work with the engineers to prioritize the list of possible features to build by comparing their relative cost and value. When it seems no matter what you change you’re making things worse, you’ve reached the local maxima of your current design. There may still be a better design, but you’ve essentially reached the best version of your current design.
Play test as early as possible. Run a kleenex test, where two people who’ve never seen the game before test it out together without any instructions, and see if the game is able to convey what it’s meant to. This will reveal where there are differences between how you intended something to be interpreted and how it is actually interpreted. They won’t always say to you directly or exactly what the problem is. For example if the testers give suggestions for improvement, you should reverse engineer where they could’ve had problems that would’ve led to those suggestions. In the next test, use a brand new set of testers, never the same ones, that’s why it’s called the kleenex test.
Use metrics as guides but know they aren’t everything. When someone is reaching for the controller excitedly and saying let me try that, or they don’t seem to want to stop playing, those are obviously good signs. For more systematic measures, you can look at things like failure rates across different player types. Sometimes the demographic you initially target may not be the actual ones that your game becomes most popular with. Focus groups can have misleading results because participants are not game designers. You cannot describe a game concept in a focus group and expect participants to reliably imagine their experience playing it.
Have a great pitch and choose your revenue model wisely. A good pitch focuses on the player experience and inspires you to wonder how the game works and start imagining playing it in your head. There are many ways to monetize, but free to play models usually won’t work for small independent developers. It’s usually only roughly the top-paying 5% of the audience that generates majority of the revenue, so you’ll need heavy mass marketing investments to generate a large enough player base for a free to play model to be sustainable.
Study systems in the natural and social world to adapt them into your game design. Common game dynamics such as growth, allocation, destruction, and evolution all exist in the real world. Study paradigms such as cybernetics, system dynamics, cellular automata, chaos theory, and network theory. Design to encourage emergent behavior. Introducing even simple rules layers within your system can create incredibly complex unpredictable outcomes.
Game design draws from many different fields. It incorporates learnings from not just things like entertainment and storytelling, but also architecture, product design, fine art, mathematics, cognitive psychology. For example Sims started from the concept of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. You can actually study anything, make it interesting, approachable and interactive, and it becomes a game.
These are just the ideas I found most insightful. The full course, which is 4 hr 16 min, can be viewed at masterclass.com

I've found a browser based wrestling booking sim a few weeks ago when i had a shitty pc and couldn't do anything else, and even with this new pc where i can actually play games im still playing it because it's super fun.
im sure this isn't an original idea, but currently im doing a run where i'm trying to book a roster full of people that aren't signed to the major companies, (wwe/aew/tna/njpw/stardom etc) and at first i thought it was slim pickings, but with one of the scenarinos there sure are alot of indie talent, i am playing as the nwa (it was a coin flip between MLW/NWA), and i am allowing myself to sign NWA/MLW talent since they don't exist, and i am allowing myself to sign released wwe talent that I dont think are going to sign to one of the big promotions (I dont think Elias, Rick Boogz, Dana Brooke and a few others are going anywhere)
Basically my entire company is centered around CM Punk vs Matt Cardona/EC3 atm, it is actually really fun, and the roster i have is pretty decent, but it's a challenge to sign people.
sitll, highly reccomend it, journey of wrestling!
