Ser Bryce Caron, Lord of Nightsong and the Marches, Orange Knight of the Rainbow Guard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The fiercest fighters in the stormlands, and perhaps in all of Westeros, are undoubtedly the men of the marches, who are said to be born with sword in hand and oft boast of learning to fight even before they learn to walk."
Next up in our rainbow roster, the orange knight. You have to imagine Emmon Cuy got first dibs on yellow or something, as the Caron sigil is all yellow with nary a hint of orange to be seen.
That said, the orange turned out quite striking. It was only rainbow colour I didnt have a premixed ink for and had to mix the yellow and red inks, they kept wanting to separate a bit and settle unevenly, but this ended up giving a nice sense of depth to the colour. For his clothing I went with black for the Caron nightingales, and to slightly ground an otherwise very vivid mini. I gave him a slightly darker complexion to suggest years of inter-marrying and shifting borders along the Dornish marches.

ASOIAF fancasting --> The Stormlands: Tom Hopper as Bryce Caron
‘And Lord Caron is with Renly. Bryce the Orange, of the Rainbow Guard.’
More important things are happening everywhere as one of the most renowned houses of the Dornish Marches is failing. The last Caron lord will be remembered as a bold fighter, but unfortunately not much of a family man.

w. uthor hightower, day five of the riverlands gathering, @wylldfyres
Tumblr media
adrenaline still rushes as he dismounts; stallion is given a soft pat on the side, with a certain promise for pampering that is repeated as an order to the squire that takes the horse away. royce had almost forgotten the thrill of the jousting, after over three years retired from it, and the sentiment isn't any worse even after the loss that disqualifies him from the podium. of course, at least he had gotten a few more rounds before losing for the lannisport kid, which is a better prospect than he could say of his good brother. uthor is still in the competitors' tent when the lord caron enters it, and the hightower receives a dip of the head as the younger man notices his own son (and page, though the pose bryce has right now is far from one of service) perched next to his uncle. "uthor," comes a greeting, usual stiffness melting as the father beckons his son. "go get us some wine, boy." affection drips through words and with a swat of the head as the young heir of nightsong rushes out of the tent, leaving father and uncle by themselves. "if it is of any consolation, i don't think your sister will be very happy i was the one to go against you."

OVERVIEW.
ONE   . she  is  born  in  the  blistering  sun  of  braavos. vysena would be their only child, the couple far more dedicated to spreading the word of the lord of light over bringing more children into the world. she would not remember much of them beyond their love of the red god. for she was too young when they passed and found herself in a foreign land as her parents had fallen upon the shores of westeros. TWO   . she was just another orphan of oldtown when the hightowers came across her. she would never know what they saw in her that day, but it was enough for them to give her a home, education, and even one day call her a daughter. while she was grateful to both lord uhtred and lady aera, vysena had always favored her new mother over the strict reigns of the father. THREE   . she would act like the perfection of a lady of the reach. rebellion for her came in the form of knowledge. quick wit and a lethal tongue were her preferred weapons; there was nothing like embarrassing a man and watching the slow realization of what transpired dawn upon his face. her cutting nature manages to catch the eye of a few— for she does not go without lovers in the reach. but their use does not go beyond keeping her bed warm. if they have any inclination of tying themselves to house hightower through her, it is swiftly put to rest. her fate lies in the stormlands. FOUR   . she marries into house caron of nightsong. it wasn't the house of her family's choosing, but that of matthos baratheon. but it would serve a purpose all the same. if she is to marry the lapdog of the king, then she would use it to her advantage and tug on the leash until the dog barked in her favor. FIVE   . affection creeps up on her. she doesn't expect to care for any caron beyond the children she must bear, yet she does. her good sisters earn a place in her heart similar to that of her hightower siblings. while her husband was entirely more complicated. she never imagined she'd grow to love him; there were times where she vehemently refused to allow herself to do so. but she does, a confession that only comes when he nearly meets his end. while love for the carons and nightsong has finally taken root, it does not— and will not— triumph over her loyalties to house hightower.

Biography: -
tl;dr - basically it's sad girl hours but she looks v pretty doing it. Up until the age of three she was raised by her mother until she was no longer able to care for Renyse. It was then that she was left at Nightsong to be taken in by her father. It was something of a lonely, isolated upbringing aside from her siblings and so she grew up quiet and solemn. After she was legitimised she became a lady in waiting for Argella and much later one for Joanna too. True happiness came later when she was married, an arrangement but one that nonetheless brought her joy and love. It only lasted three years though as her husband died and she returned to Nightsong and rules it in her brother's stead, helping to raise her niece and nephews.
tw for death, parental neglect
The first three years of her life were spent with her mother, the daughter of a blacksmith who'd been working in the kitchen's at Nightsong. With the help of her family she was able to raise Renyse and it was a relatively happy existence until an accident meant that her grandfather could no longer work and her mother could no longer afford to keep her.
Having heard how Lord Caron had taken in another of his bastards, Renyse was left at Nightsong in the hope that she would receive the same treatment. Later in life she would be told endlessly that she should be grateful to have been taken in by the man who was her father. That he was providing a life that she was lucky to have. But she struggled to feel that in a place where she knew that she was barely wanted, even if life was technically more comfortable, leaving her almost always on edge.
The only salve to the discomfort she felt at her new surroundings was her brother, Royce. She took solace in his company and found the days in Nightsong easier when they got to spend time with one another. But after five years, Royce was sent away, leaving her feeling isolated and alone once more.
With Ronnet barely caring about how she spent her time, Renyse spent much of it retreating into herself. She found ways to escape Nightsong in her mind, journeying to other parts of Westeros through the books she read and learning about the history and politics of the Seven Kingdoms.
She was fourteen when the Greyjoys rebelled and though Ronnet remained at Nightsong, Renyse quickly realised that her father was mismanaging their resources. She intervened where she could, trying to do so subtly so that she wouldn't draw his ire. At Nightsong itself resources were scarce but the were able to send men and ensure they had what they needed.
Legitimacy came with the end of the war, Matthos granting it to the Caron siblings. Seeing little in her life changing if she still had to live alongside Ronnet and trying but failing to intervene where she could when it came to the debt she saw him plunging them further into, Renyse sought out connections elsewhere.
She served Princess Argella as her lady in waiting, following her to the Westerlands with her marriage. Two years later, when their father died she was certain it would be nothing but a struggle for Royce to get Nightsong in some kind of order and so she returned to help him.
Not long after her twenty-fourth nameday she decided that it was almost getting past time that she was married and so ever the pragmatist she drew up a list of potential husbands she felt would benefit her House and her King. The neatly written list was then handed to her brother, giving him the opportunity to choose a favourite for himself. A few months later a match was arranged between herself and the Mallister heir.
Renyse had long since learnt not to let her hopes rise for anything and so her expectations were kept low. She rationalised that she would be the best wife she could possibly be, she was adaptable and even if love didn't grow between them she was certain she would at least love her children. The worst case scenario had already been thought of, turned over in her mind and she could easily convince herself without a doubt that she could bear it.
But what she was entirely unprepared for was Garrett himself. To her surprise he seemed smitten from the very first meeting and she found it almost impossible to resist his warmth. It would be an exaggeration to say that he was the first person to ever make her smile ( she does so adore her family, after all ) but he was the first to make her laugh in a way that made joy spark and burn through her, setting her soul alight.
Their marriage was a happy one and Renyse slowly allowed herself to relax into the idea that perhaps the rest of her life would be content, one filled with stability and love. Even though Garrett's duties as heir meant that their time together was often sporadic and scattered, snatching days together and, if they were lucky, sometimes weeks. When they weren't together they wrote, detailed letters keeping the closeness between them despite distance.
They had just entered into their third year of marriage when news was received that he wouldn't be coming home like planned. The report that Garrett had intervened to keep the peace but the skirmish had turned fatal, robbing her of her husband. In her grief she found staying at Seagard too difficult and so returned to Nightsong.
While she has remained there the majority for the four years since, helping her goodsister with the running of it as much as she can, there was a brief spell of a few months she served as a handmaiden to the queen. The motivation was to send information back to Argella but the appointment was short lived.
Headcanons: -
As a young child she'd often struggled with sleep, especially once she was moved into Nightsong and she was adjusting to her surroundings. Many a night was spent gazing at the night sky as she counted stars to make herself tired enough to sleep. As she grew older her fondness for the stars only grew and she began to study them with books she'd found. There are still sleepless nights for her and she inevitably finds herself looking skyward hoping the familiarity of the host of stars can lull her into sleep.
Whilst at Seagard she made full use of their library, exploring tomes that she hadn't seen before and on more than one occasion she found flowers slipped between the pages of the books - a gift from Garrett. This continued even when they were separated, him sending his letters with a pressed flower between the pages. It's a tradition that she carries on now as a private memorial to him, picking a flower in bloom and pressing it between the pages of whatever tome has her attention.
At the behest of her brother Renyse learnt archery under the instruction of Nightsong's master at arms. She wasn't a natural at it but because it was important to Royce she put in the time and efforts so she's now a better shot than her brother but would never claim to be anything but proficient. Practise is maintained so she doesn't lose the skill she invested so much time into.
She's taught herself to read Valyrian but has never heard it spoken before.
Connections: -
Friends - probably someone she met while at court or in the Westerlands as Argella's lady in waiting or in the Riverlands while she was married into House Mallister.
Pen pals - someone she perhaps only met briefly but they bonded enough to start writing to each other. Renyse's letters would most likely consist of things she had found interesting in her reading and she'd have been likely to copy out whole pages of text for the other to read. She'd have been supportive and a level head means her advice is usually sound. A closeness has developed between them despite the distance and little time spent in each others company.
Former in laws - full wc can be found here. could be angsty, could be wholesome, could be somewhere in between.
Political challenge - the Carons are Baratheon supporters, of Matthos himself especially. Renyse feels indebted to him and also follows her brother's lead but she's smart enough to recognise that he's not always a great king. It would be interesting to see someone challenge her stance ( gently please ) and see if she'd ever confess to those feelings.
Slowburn - it's about the pining and the yearning, the not realising your feelings until your almost half in love. Renyse has already had a deep love in her life with her husband and I think she believes that that is the only time that it will happen for her. I'd love a relationship that slowly builds - whether that be friendship that turns into something more or perhaps they're thrown together for another reason. If you are at all interested I have vibes lined up ready and waiting.

his dad never sired legitimate children, and brought in his bastards to be raised in nightsong (did the bare bare minimum)
when he was 11, he was sent to squire to orys baratheon. #dadfigure, stayed with the then lord and supported him martially through the war, becoming commandant in several battles.
orys legitimazed him and his sisters after becoming king. when his father finally dies, he takes over nightsong, by then in debt. orys decides to marry him to a very wealthy house, eventually settling by the hightowers.
him & vysena have been married for around seven years now. as long as she keeps him in the dark regarding her true intentions, things are working out just fine. what could possibly be wrong when you're on the good side of a good king like orys the first?
proper bio
trigger warning : infertility discussion, childbirth, stillbirth, miscarriage, cheating, parental neglect, death, arranged marriage.
though ronnet caron made a decent marriage, some forty years ago, his marriage bed was doomed to be barren. any child conceived would soon meet their almighty maker before birth, and, once or twice, before the babe’s second name day. the only children born strong were those born out of the lord’s wedlock, scattered around the stormlands; some made it to his doorstep, swaddled swiftly in the expectation of charity from the man who had begotten them. out of spite for his wife, ronnet usually took them in.
royce would be one of those fortunate abandoned bastards at nightsong — the first, for all accounts, if only because his mother, a lady’s maid from the ruling lady, passed from childbed fever. the appreciation a father would have for his first born son was a shallow thing: he was raised within the household not as a lord, but an underfoot storm, his status as a possible heir only acknowledged on the letters and numbers taught by the castle’s maester and a weekly supper at his father’s chambers. the rest of his days were spent with the staff of the castle, mostly with the master of arms and the stewart, both of which were prompt to have him succeed them on their roles one day.
when roy turned ten or eleven, his stepmother got pregnant once more. wishing that his presence would not disturb an apparent last chance to get a proper heir, he was sent to storm’s end to squire under one of the baratheon lords — luck would have it that orys would win the boy’s guardianship over a hand of cards. this time, roy would find that he was really fortunate. despite his young age and low status, orys took him on eagerly, dragging the boy around everywhere; roy didn’t mind the menial work of a squire, as he was treated the same as any proper lordling, and, with time, even better. orys took a liking to him, and, when his stepmother passed and the child with her, refused to return royce to his father. roy couldn’t care less, content to accompany the king in all of his pastimes, that would soon become his own.
at twenty years old, the king’s honor is felled by the mad targaryen and roy is beside his liege. after two years on the battlefield, he is a prestigious part of the coronation ceremony of orys baratheon, first of his name. for a few months, he considers pledging for the white cloaks — it wouldn’t be much different from the last decade of his life, he’d reckon, and they would have no issue accepting a bastard of a storm lord but, instead, orys signed the paper that would change his life: his legitimacy. with his father still alive, however, roy couldn’t afford to care to return to storm’s end. there was a golden life for him at king’s landing; even if he struggled to understand the intricate politics, something neither his father nor overlord bothered to include him in during his early life, he thrived in mostly everything else, enjoying the attention and the parade of entertainment available to a lordling.
when his father died, five years after the war was won, he took a leave from court to sort out the matters at nightsong. unwilling to follow his father’s footsteps, his first arrangement was to his sisters — they were both sent to noblehouses, one of them with one of orys’ daughters, so they would gain better upbringing, position and visibility. then, he had to deal with the books in tatters his father had left out, a crumbling heritage after years of gambling and bad enterprises. for years, roy had fought for his own place, for a piece of nightsong, and now that he had it, he received it in shambles. one last fucking gift from ronnet caron.
he can barely keep a straight face at court. the king helps — orys is most generous to those he loves and to those who pander to him — and he gains several offices around the court, though the king wishes for a more permanent option: marriage. one last double-edged fortune is found when he is demanded to marry vysena hightower. demanded, because he’d always swear he’d only do it because the king wished to, but she’s wormed her way into his affections, one sharp joke at a time. two children later, there’s a much necessary stability around nightsong, a family he’s never truly known and wants more of.
his loyalty is his king’s, first and foremost. to this day, most of his time is spent at court, a vital part of orys’ men — more of a father than he has ever known, royce still sees orys as some kind of mythological figure, half a god, finding excuses for the king’s behaviors and turning a blind eye to his political mishaps. though their relationship has much improved, he is unaware of his wife’s family’s machinations and prefers to continue safeguarding the baratheon dynasty, a great one that must live on.

Note
Do you think there is much in the way of genuine loyalty to Joffrey/Tommen “Baratheon” in the Vale of Arryn and/or Stormlands?
Definitely not in the Stormlands; they went over to Renly, then to Stannis, and most of them who did only seemed to go over to Joffrey after Blackwater. Gulian Swann had one son (Donnel) go over to Renly/Stannis and the other (Balon) to Joffrey in a clear case of hedging bets. Red Ronnet Connington joined Renly/Stannis before kneeling to Joffrey after Blackwater, and swears his loyalty to Tommen by promising the heads of JonCon and Aegon, but this is clearly to save his own life and defend his lands. Despite Robert being a Stormlander, the Lannister-dominated court prevented many Stormlanders from getting high positions, which would’ve bred resentment (as it did in Da3ron II’s court); and Cersei’s adultery would’ve hit them especially hard (those that believed it) considering Robert was originally their very popular liege lord. In addition, supplanting a well-established lordly house with a man from your own kingdom is always unpopular with the locals; House Baratheon of King’s Landing awarded the lands, incomes, and rights of House Caron to Lord Bryce’s killer, Philip Foote of the Westerlands (thus disinheriting Bryce’s half brother, the faithful Stannis supporter Rollam Storm). This grant is a reminder of Westerland domination over the Stormlands, which would make even “loyal” lords fearful their lands could be taken from them and a Westerlander yesman put in their place. I wouldn’t be surprised if, unable to see Stannis coming back south, many Stormlanders agree to side with Aegon out of revenge/fear, and Philip Foote ends up murdered.
I can’t imagine many Valemen being loyal to Joffrey/Tommen either, considering how it was their regime that gifted Petyr Baelish Harrenhall/the Riverlands and thus enabled him to marry Lysa Arryn and become “Lord Protector of the Vale.” Petyr has some allies he bought with gold/titles and land, but I’d hardly call them true supporters, let alone supporters of Joffrey/Tommen; and of course, he has many open enemies with the Lords Declarant bar Corbray. Godfrey Borrell is nominally loyal to Lysa, but secretly aids Davos; Robar Royce fights for Renly due to tiring of tourneys, and the other Royces support Robb over Lysa’s enforced neutrality. So again, I think the ones who support Joffrey/Tommen are doing it to keep their lives and lands, rather than believing they are the rightful kings and fighting to support them. This of course makes them a good contrast to House Stark, who, despite all the heirs being murdered/missing, still command a lot of “true loyalty” (borne of the fond memories of Ned and other Stark ancestors) in the North.

If Bryce Caron and Beric Dondarrion- born a year before renly, were fostered with him stormend do you think this would make renly less close with the Tyrell’s?would it change renly much as he kinda grew up alone or would it make no difference
Hard to say? There are too many variables here. Plus, a large part of Renly's closeness with the Tyrells is his close relationship with Loras, which I don't see necessarily being disrupted just because Renly has other friends.

More face studies, with some of my human characters, this time!  Two Wardens, and a non-Warden Cousland; let’s go!  From left to right: Gazza Cousland, Jeanette Caron, and Aja Amell.
Gazza Cousland - My canon Cousland who doesn’t become a Warden, but who does travel with the Wardens, Gazza isn’t technically related to the Couslands by blood.  She was born in Highever to unknown parents and was left with the chantry in the city.  Raised as an orphan, Gazza never really felt connected to or safe with her peers or chantry guardians; at a young age, she developed an acute case of alopecia areata, and lost all the hair on her body, something other children avoided and made fun of her for.  In addition, she had a mild speech impediment that made it difficult for her to communicate, isolating her further.  Because of this, and her alopecia areata, one of the more paranoid chantry lay brothers suspected Gazza to be possessed, and took a brand to her shoulder, as well as cutting out her tongue, to try and silence the demon and “free” Gazza.  Not long after, Bryce Cousland found Gazza and, horrified at her treatment by the Highever chantry, adopted her into the Cousland family.  Although it took some time, Aldous developed a sign language for Gazza to communicate with, and the whole of her family, as well as nobles closer to the Couslands, learned it as well.  By the time the events of DAO start, Gazza has developed a close bond with her adopted family, and has made strides in recovering from the trauma of her childhood.  She is skilled in dual-wielding handaxes and prefers to be at the vanguard of any fight.  She was not recruited into the Wardens because Duncan was unfortunately too late to reach Highever before Arl Howe’s coup.  Gazza does, however, manage to escape on her own and makes her way to Ostagar via Redcliffe in order to warn Arl Eamon, King Cailan, and her brother, Fergus.
Jeanette Caron - One of my Orlesian Wardens, Jeanette is a senior member of the group in Orlais.  She’s my longest-serving Warden, and the details of how she came to be a Warden are still something I’m working through.  (I’m aiming to finish The Calling to see if there are any possibilities there, as I like the idea of her having known some of the older Wardens.)  But in terms of the here and now, Jeanette is a gruff woman, and many of the younger Wardens see her as being quite bitter, and are wary to approach her.  She drinks quite heavily, and has lived through the emancipation of Ferelden from Orlais’s control, having secretly supported it, though she could not actively take part in or aid any resistance efforts.  She is canonically one of the strongest mages in my worldstate, and specializes in primal magic.  She’s not very skilled with melee fighting, but rarely loses her cool, and rarely lets enemies close enough to her to take advantage of her lack of melee skills.  For the events of Awakening, Jeanette is sent with several other Orlesian Wardens to Vigil’s Keep, and is outfitted by Empress Celene, and though that means she has good armor and weapons, she doesn’t particularly care for it.  Having lived through a lot of the machinations of aristocratic Orlesian society, Jeanette tends to be disdainful of the nobility, and knows that Celene is using her and her fellow Wardens to make a political statement to Ferelden.  Once she arrives at Vigil’s Keep, Jeanette essentially leads the charge against the Withered.  She basically becomes a one-woman magical battering ram, and she and her fellow Orlesian Wardens (Anselme Andras and Leofalda Kader) take very seriously the task of trying to find any of their fellow Orlesian Wardens who have survived.
Aja Amell - Aja is my canon Amell, and she joins the Wardens because the only other choice she has is going to Aeonar.  Aja is the daughter of Revka Amell, a noble from Kirkwall, and Caderyn o’Falconhold, an Avvar augur of the settlement Falconhold.  For the first seven years of her life, Aja was raised in Falconhold with her father’s people, her magic celebrated as a good omen by the settlement.  She was always somewhat shy, but was bound to a spirit of confidence once her magic manifested, in the hopes that the spirit would help her develop more self-assuredness as she grew.  When she was seven, her mother managed to convince her father to take Aja to meet Revka’s other children.  However, Aja wasn’t taught to hide her magic in Kirkwall, and very quickly gave herself away as a mage.  She was immediately captured by the templars and held in the overcrowded Gallows.  Caderyn, enraged, attempted to get his daughter back, but was killed; Revka, horrified and devastated, disappeared and was never heard from since.  Aja was transferred to Kinloch Hold in Ferelden where the Chantry sisters paid particular attention to making sure she developed the way they wished her to, as her obvious Avvar heritage and culture was something they viewed as dangerous.  By the start of DAO, Aja has been fully conditioned to believe in and follow the Chantry’s teachings, has developed a skill in Spirit and some Creation magic, and has grown into an intelligent if very shy and sheltered young woman.  When Jowan enlists her help, Aja reveals his plot to Irving, frightened for her friend, and believing that Irving can stop and help him.  She is not combat-trained, and is initially extremely unused to battlefield conditions after joining the Wardens.
Almost done with all the canon protags of DAO!  There are definitely more I can do, but for the next set, I’m going to be finishing up with my Mahariel and my Surana.

w. vysena caron, day five of the riverlands gathering, @stcneheartd
Tumblr media
at the age of eight, bryce is a tall boy — royce doubts he shall grow as tall as his father, but that hardly matters to him as long as the boy grows strong and into himself, and at least that, it seems to be the truth as he goes around the caron tent fetching his father's heavy equipments without barely a complaint — surely roy will hear those later, when the boy is so wore down by the day that he will sleep easy, but now, playing as his father's page, he seems content to be useful. the little harmony within the tent threatens to be broken as the sound of the flap opening reveals its ruling lady, making her spouse's cerulean gaze follow her at once, as they often have. it seems vysena's anger only makes her more beautiful, or perhaps he is as she says: a stupid man who enjoys toying with his life. "wife," he greets her, joy in his voice; though he knows to tread carefully with the hightower, roy also has always been one to stick to his doings, and it wouldn't be her that would make him back down from standing tall (even if something threatens him to do just so, that still odd tugging at the heartstrings she does to him that often leads her to getting his way — or so he supposes). "i thought you would not see me off." there is insolence on the way he raises a brow in question.

For your ASOIAF/historical verses for Regina, how does she balance being a lady and a fighter?
Thanks for the question! First of all, it depends at which point in the story she is at. She marries a bastard (Even if it is a bastard in a good position, being one of two surviving members of the family) and while she wants to strengthen the line, she doesn't expect her children to inherit anything. It is only after he dies that she considers the possibility. And she does expect to have more than a few children, considering House Caron is in such a disprivileged spot.
Regina can sew and sing and dance and do mathemathics, and she is also literate. But she doesn't know heraldry or everything about the social contract, nor is she perfectly versed in Westerosi history. She knows enough. She stays defferrant to her husband Rolland, and she does not tolerate disrespect towards her person, but she does know her place. Her dyed hair and fighting abilities are possibly the only things she bends the societal convention for. Her daughters will learn to fight, too, but they're women in a patriarchal world, and they'll know where they belong as they do plays for power.
Regina and Rolland come with the idea of using her in Renly's campaign as a foil for Melissandre (See? I have a foreign member of my team too! And she's not an evil witch! #feminism) but she's not a member of his guard, and she's probably tasked with guarding Catelyn. When Renly dies she does go to the Wall, and again she tries to position herself as a bridge to allow the wildling women to fight for Stannis and more specifically so the men who just joined him don't antagonize them so much (See? Warrior women are allowed to you all had one already! #feminism 2) and she has to balance the lady act and the warrior act in a very difficult balancing act.
In general, both her and Rolland expected more freedom than they will end up having after Bryce dies, so they'll play the Lord of Nightsong part to the best their skills allow.
