#but he doesn't expect jin ling to claim him as an uncle

Good morning I am thinking about how Jin Ling continuing to call Jiang Cheng “jiujiu” makes it easier for him to slot in an address for Wei Wuxian without having to change anything. This could probably be a metaphor for the ways that JC and through him JL don’t let go of things and how that’s a huge part of what lets WWX get his happy ending but also. You see the legendary and ferocious Sandu Shengshou and then this full teenager calls him the uncle equivalent of “mommy”
YEAHHHHH I LOVE THIS ABOUT THEM. it really is the equivalent of calling for his mommy/daddy because he didn't grow up with his actual parents -- his jiujiu was his parent. it does make me kinda sad to think he probably can't do that as much post-canon, or at least in the public eye, since he has to become Jin sect leader and present himself like a mature person that should be taken seriously. he's already so young -- it would not be good for his reputation to be so informal and childish when referring to a fellow sect leader. but I think in public or around his friends, he still calls him jiujiu, because Jiang Cheng will always be that to him :')

This solidly falls under fics I Want but would have to write myself, but I know me and that's... unlikely so here are my thoughts on why Jin Ling probably has to deal with So Many assassins just all the time.
Jin Ling is obviously a super young sect leader being shoved into a rather large power vacuum and no matter how many powerful uncles he has there are people who are going to look at him and see an opportunity for advancement.
And then there's the winning combination of his temper and his not insignificant drive to make sweeping changes to how Lanling Jin operates. So he's very capable of pissing people off on his own merit when he's not being targeted because of his sect, his position or his uncles.
But this is a boy who was raised by Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng. On the one hand he has an uncle who (while being fiercely protective) takes pride in being able to handle things himself and on the other hand he has an uncle who plotted enough that he needed to be at least a little paranoid/on his guard at all times. Which is the perfect storm for Jin Ling just to think that frequent assasination/kidnapping attempts are totally normal.
He doesn't want to tell Jiang Cheng about more of the attempts than he has to because he wants to stand on his own as a sect leader and make him proud/not disappoint him. Or more importantly worry him. (Surprisingly enough having Sandu Shengshou hang around Koi Tower like a big purple storm cloud doesn't actually help him gain confidence/respect as a sect leader)
And he isn't in a place to realize that attacks like this should be closer to a rarity than a common occurrence. After all he grew up thinking that his little cousin had been collateral damage to an assassination attempt and you can't tell me that Qin Su and Jin Guangyao (with varying levels of sincerity) wouldn't have pressed caution into him for years afterward. So this is probably normal right?
He does what he can armed with Koi Tower's guard, his father's sword, a very good dog and teenage determination, but dealing with nighttime attacks as well as the business of running a sect during the day is exhausting.
Lan Sizhui is surprised when he asks if he can teach him about poisons and antidotes from the Dafan Wen records he's been collecting, but is always happy to help.
Lan Jingyi has always been a good sparing partner for him- he can vent his frustration without having it taken personally and Jingyi's excess energy needs to go somewhere. But eventually Jingyi has to wonder when the little mistress got to be so damn fast, especially considering all the paperwork and meetings he's always complaining about don't really leave him much time on the practice court.
Ouyang Zizhen mostly worries about the ever growing bags under his friend's eyes. And wonders why he refuses to sleep in the same room as him and the Lans after night hunting or drinking together. (Jingyi insists that it's because he's stuck up. Jin Ling claims that Jingyi snores. [Really he can't stand the thought of putting his friends in danger if trouble comes calling in the night])
So the juniors are ready to stage some sort of intervention just as soon as they can figure out what exactly the problem is.
And I don't care if it's them who manage it or if Wei Wuxian accidentally discovers the problem by climbing in Jin Ling’s window one night and nearly getting himself stabbed (again), having Fairy sicced on him and the guard rushing in in all the commotion. All while Jin Ling yells at him ("What did you expect sneaking around like an assassin?!").
Either way the cat is out of the bag, everyone is horrified that Jin Ling thought this was just a thing that all major sect leaders deal with, and his family and friends come together to let the cultivation know in no uncertain terms that this is Not Okay and Will Not Be Tolerated

so i just read a fic about nhs hijacking a nie-hosted discussion conference in order to stage the much neglected wangxian wedding instead, which was all good and fun and sweet until i started to think about it from. like. all the minor sect's perspective.
like.
here you just are, a minor sect leader who doesn't claim much in this world, here at the annual discussion conference only to suffer through all the stuffy ceremonies and try to petition for changes that will make your life even just a little bit easier. you're an upstanding sect leader who just wants to make good by your sect, your disciples, and the people under your care.
you don't care much for the major sects, try to stay out of their way and their endless drama as much as possible. they're a necessary evil; they're insufferable, but they keep the cultivation world turning, and so you're here to pay your respect and try to steal just a sliver of their time so that they will at least hear you out about your petitions.
they've been getting worse the last couple of years, you think, what with the intersect marriages and the sworn brotherhood debacle from a few years ago. hell, that jin ling kid had claimed an uncle from each of the four major sects. how much more inbred could they get.
no matter. you're not getting involved. you're here to play nice and to beg of a scrap of attention, and then you can all go home again.
but then wei wuxian, and you're not getting involved in that either, you can't keep up with who's the villain of the week at this point you just want to get all of this over with, arrives, and. huh. that sure looks fancier than most discussion conference banquet outfits you've ever seen, but no matter. what wouldn't these lunatics get up to. you're used to them just throwing money to the wind.
that's more red than you would have expected, even from what little you've heard of him though. he always did prefer the color though, didn't he? would have expected more black from the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, that's all. but you're NOT getting involved. no. nope. so far over your non-existent paygrade.
but you're not the only one who notices. an oppressive silence falls over the banquet hall. and, huh, does hanguang-jun look even more stiff than he usually does? and have you ever seen him without a single piece of white clothing before??
and.
oh.
oh, no.
you recognize this.
but surely, it can't be-
"NIE HUAISANG," sandu shengshou howls as he clambers over his table, plates and dishes scattering in his wake, sandu already drawn and zidian already crackling, "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU."
"i have no idea what you're talking about," the infamous headshaker replies, his fan fluttering innocently.
zewu-jun looks like he's about to faint while lan qiren looks like he's about to go into a qi deviation right then and there. some of the lan juniors have stood up from their seats and are cheering wildly. that poor jin kid looks to the closest wine jug and downs it all in one go.
clan leader jiang is currently trying to throttle clan leader nie with his bare hands.
and all the while the peerless hanguang-jun and the reviled yiling patriarch are just staring dumbfoundedly at each other, not having a single care about all the pandemonium breaking out all around them.
and oh fuck, you realize. does this mean that they're all related, like, for real now???

About Jin Ling calling Wei Wuxian by his birth name: it was considered rude to call someone by their birth name if you were not close to them. Like you were disrespecting them. (But it does raise the question about Jin Ling, as no one call him by his courtesy name. But maybe that's since he doesn't like it, everyone took the hint?)
Ooh, thank you for answering that for me.
Every time I watch it I pick up something new, I find this interesting then, how will Jin Ling address him from now on?
Jiang Cheng didn’t even address Wei Wuxian as Wei Ying and they grew up together as brothers, Jiang Yanli always called him A-Xian or XianXian, the only ones who addressed him as Wei Ying was Lan WangJi, Jiang Fengmian and, surprisingly (or not if you’re right about them using it as an insult to disrespect him, which doesn’t fit considering she’s known him most of his life) Madam Yu.
The rest of the juniors call him Senior Wei, but I can see Wei Wuxian bullying Jin Ling into calling him uncle.
Also Jin Ling’s courtesy name is an interesting issue, I wonder if Jiang Cheng told him Wei Wuxian gave it to him and that’s why he won’t use it, or just that Jiang Cheng refused to use it all. Which is confusing considering how important tradition and societal expectations are to Jiang Cheng.
(Sorry this is getting so long, but another case I want to make)
When Lan WangJi is holding onto Wei Wuxian as he’s casually dangling off a cliff, when Jiang Cheng rocks up Lan WangJi addresses him by his courtesy name Jiang Wanyin, which is very out of character. But also brings me to the Jiang Ancestral Temple scene, when Wei Wuxian gets mad at Jiang Cheng he also addresses him as Jiang Wanyin. Which would back up your claim about it being used as an insult if they weren’t raised together and still care very much for each other (even if Jiang Cheng is very bad at showing it, this is the hill I will die on), which makes it interesting in comparison when Wei Wuxian and Lan WangJi fought he would instead call him by his courtesy name to create distance. Obvs I have no idea where I’m going with this, but it just causes me a lot of emotions that I don’t know what to do with
