#but i don't want a social media site and I don't want that moderated web form bullshit

What are your thoughts on Ao3 as a whole? I am having a moral dilemma because it's great for tagging, a lot of my favorite creators use it, and it's better than Wattpad, but it also has some truly immoral shit that the site staff isn't doing anything about (like having to dodge past explicit underage mcu peter/adult tony)
I love this ask, thank you so much for sending it, but my answer is going to upset everyone. Like all my opinions on internet discourse, my answer can't be reduced to a pro and anti binary. The issue is complicated and nuanced. The ao3 is better than everything that came before it but it still has a lot of things I would like to see improved upon in the future.
TL; DR: The ao3 is born out of censorship in fandom and so is a free speech maximalist, it's an archive stop treating it like social media, I don't give a shit about the weird porn once you start censoring that you're going to censor art that is important, the real problem is the hate speech that thrives on that platform and it's weird that the conversation has been reduced to shipping discourse
So I have experience with every major fandom platform: Ao3 (obviously), Wattpad, Fanfiction.net, tumblr, and even live journal briefly although I never wrote or posted anything, just lurked. The thing about ao3 is that it is born out of a history of censorship. FF.net used to have these purges, your work would just be gone one day and it was usually explicit stuff and queer stuff which sucks and is obviously bigoted. But the purges happened to make the website more advisor friendly. I do not believe in censorship and I certainly don't believe in censorship for the sake of profit. Before there was ff.net there were fanfic websites that were fandom-specific, usually password protected and invite-only, and heavily moderated. It used to be very hard for fans to get their work out into the world. So the ao3 was born with a very explicit free-speech maximalist approach, post whatever you want we won't stop you. And I totally get that and I believe in this model. But unlike a lot of these older websites, ao3 has an intensive policy of positivity that seems to be completely accidental. No one comments meaningful constructive criticism much less calls out bigotry. Freedom of speech should protect you from the government and coporations (because I don't give a shit what the supreme court says they are not people) not from other citizens. You say some dumb shit, I'm going to tell you it's dumb shit.
okay so that's why ao3 is like that, but what are some pros of the website:
it's an archive. It doesn't have an algorithm, it has a filtering and tagging system and a really good one!! God do I wish my academic databases were half as good as ao3. This is another reason it doesn't censor content, it's more about preserving fandom than curating it. It's up to you to comb through the archive and decide what you want to read.
it's not a social media site! Like it is so rare for something online to not be controlled by an algorithm. I like that I have real and genuine control over what I read. I hate the way Wattpad has made fanfic into social media. The setup of it is so bad for critical engagement. Like you really really have to try to get any sort of meaningful feedback and what you post gets buried within an hour, god I hate Wattpad, and its stolen art and stories
it's a non-profit. FF.net ran ads. Wattpad runs ads and is selling your stories whether you like it or not. It's gross, it's terrible, and it's legally dangerous for fanworks. AND CREATORS DON'T SEE A PENNY OF THAT AD REVENUE! Yes, the ao3 takes donations but how that money is spent is public information.
it has a legal team. You don't have to worry about being sued anymore (I hope Anne Rice is spinning in her grave) and it's doing amazing work in expanding the power of copyright (seriously I had to study one of their cases for one of my poli-sci classes). the OTW is more than the ao3, it's also a field of scholarship, they have published a lot of great articles about fandom history and culture
okay now the cons
it is a monopoly. I use that term loosely because again it's a non-profit and I think the fact that it is only the half-decent fanfic website is a pure accident and the fact that they're the best at what they do. FF.net has been dying for years, Wattpad is terrible in every way, and every social media site has a word limit except for tumblr which whether we like it or not is dying and hostile to fan creators BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T REBLOG THINGS. If you don't like the ao3 you basically have to stop writing fanfic
because it's an archive, and it's hard to interact with people. Yeah you have comments and kudos but there's no messaging system, you can't make friends on ao3
there's no blocking system or built-in permanent moderation system. I don't want to see content that's triggering or even mildly upsetting so I have to remind myself of it while I manually filter it out of my searches
there's genuine hate speech on that website and I don't think it deserves to be preserved as fandom history, especially with the same weight as other fanworks.
Like here's the meat of the question. "There's weird porn and bad ships on the ao3!" I don't give a shit. There's always going to be weird shit on the internet, sorry people are freaks and there's nothing you can do to stop them. don't like don't read. one of my favorite works on the ao3 has non-con, like a lot of non-con, and it is genuinely one of my favorite works of literature. But I'm using my critical thinking skills to understand that it is a horror story, brutal chest-bursting horror, not a romance. I read the story, I liked it, and I still believe that rape is bad, in fact, that has been cemented in my brain. I read Jane Eyre and I don't think women should be locked in the attic for being mentally unwell. The Great Gatsby is my favorite novel and I hate America and capitalism. I love Fahrenheit 451 and I don't believe in book burnings. Dark stories deserve to be told no matter what. It is up to you to decide if they have value and meaning. And guess what I despise Peter Parker/Tony Stark as a ship, but it still deserves to exist because it's not hurting anyone. Like it's ship discourse, it doesn't matter. This "think of the children, bad things can't exist" mindset isn't helpful. Like this is the mindset that conservatives bring to the don't say gay bills. From literary studies, education, and political science perspectives this mindset is dangerous. You can not say that art isn't allowed to exist because you personally find it distasteful because that is a flexible line. First, we're purging everything underage off ao3 (sure we've removed Starker, but also all the works that unpacked Peter's trauma around Skip Westcott) then it's everything incestuous, and then it's every kink you don't like, and shit we're back at the ff.net mentality.
but there's a big difference between ships you don't like and hate speech. Fandom has a racism problem and I have seen some genuinely terrible fics that treat characters of color terribly and not in a way that explores and unpacks racism, but in a racist way. There are works on the ao3 of Steve Rogers lynching Sam Wilson. Those works don't exist to add depth to Sam's character, they exist to make fans of color uncomfortable. THIS IS WHAT THE CONVERSATION SHOULD BE ABOUT! the ao3 has said that they don't want to draw a line because it's a slippery slope. And my stance is no, it's not. The line we draw is hate speech, feel like that should be obvious. People aren't writing underage ships to make children in fandom feel uncomfortable, they're doing it because the shipping options are limited, they think it's hot, they want to explore a trauma they lived through, they want to help someone else unpack their trauma, they are a child who feels mature for their age and has a crush on the older character etc. This is a non-issue. if underage stuff bothers you so much, go to your local library and demand they burn their copies of Lolita. The amount of impact a fanwork has is microscopic to culture as a whole. But fans of color routinely speak out about how fandom is not an inclusive space for them and it's bullshit that the ao3 won't stand up for them or even give them tools to make their fandom spaces safer.

hey, have you heard that pillowfort has ✨ drafts ✨ now? (as in, the ability to save your posts as drafts.) they're still working on the queue feature (update: it's done!), but drafts are a big step forward!
in case you missed it so far, pillowfort is like a cross between tumblr and dreamwidth/livejournal, with a simplified dashboard reminiscent of old school tumblr and some classic livejournal features such as communities, threaded comments, and the ability to make individual posts followers-only or mutuals-only.
what are communities? basically, central hubs for posts about any subject you want that, unlike hashtags, can be moderated. they may have rules, such as "[subject matter] must be tagged" for example. you can post directly to a community or reblog existing posts to it!
since the site is currently experiencing some financial trouble, i thought i'd help out by spreading the word once again.
edit: the fundraiser was a success! crisis averted! i knew we could do it :D
why you should give pillowfort a chance:
no ads
no venture capitalist funding
no spying on the users
completely free to use except for optional premium features
nsfw is allowed except for sexual depictions of minors. if you're unsure what exactly that means, their tos may help
communities and the privacy controls mentioned above are excellent features
great community, low drama compared to other websites (so far)
the site's features themselves encourage genuine connection and good-faith conversation over endless "discourse"
every blog can automatically be filtered by original posts only or reblogs only
reasons not to join:
if you enjoy algorithmic social media. there is no algorithm at all
if you want to post or look at machine-generated art. they're still finalising the wording and personally i hope some exception will be made for models trained on ethically sourced images, but basically an anti-AI rule is in the works (update: finished!)
if you cannot live without reblog additions (reblogging with comment). all discussions on a pillowfort post take place in the comments section, and only your own followers see your tags. this has its pros and cons for sure! a similar feature to scratch that itch may be implemented in the future, but it will never be exactly like on tumblr.
if you need everything to be an app. the website works fine in a mobile browser and a progressive web app will hopefully be released soon (basically it's like an app in your browser and on mobile these can be added to the homescreen like real apps i think? they have push notifications!), but there's not going to be a native app available through official app stores due to the restrictions of those stores.
other factors to consider:
yes, the userbase is still small. depending on your interests, activity may be very slow. but we can change that! and on the plus side, reblogging your post to a community is a good way to easily get more eyes on it; way more effective than simply adding tags imo
the site culture is a bit different than on tumblr. many people read everything that's been posted since the last time they were online and don't follow more users/communities than they can keep up with. it's still somewhat lacking in shitposts and heavy on "essays" but don't be afraid to post whatever 😅
there are no blog themes like we have them on tumblr as yet, but you can customise your blog's colours and use html/insert links and images in your blog description
likes literally do nothing except to let OP know you enjoyed their post. you can't look at a list of all your likes. beware!
the staff is small and development is slow. some highly anticipated planned features other than the aforementioned queue include: - multi-account management - dashboard filters/reading lists - post bookmarking (since likes don't work that way) but we don't know how soon any of those will be implemented.
there is a user-developed browser extension (well, a userscript) called tassel available that adds additional features much like tumblr's beloved xkit :)
✨ okay, so how do i sign up? ✨
if you're interested but confused by the sign-up process or still under the impression that you need to pay to sign up (false), i'll put some clarifications and invite codes under the read more below. plus a note on donating, premium features, the paypal issue etc.
in a nutshell:
it's free
signing up without an invite code is possible, but you may have to wait a short while - supposedly less than an hour atm. just submit your email to the waitlist
if you don't feel like waiting, you can either use an invite code from an existing user or pay $5 to sign up instantly
every user gets plenty of invite codes and we're all willing to hand them out at the drop of a hat. they're really not hard to come by
some invites to get you started (just click the link):
invite 1 ▪ invite 2 ▪ invite 3 ▪ invite 4 ▪ invite 5
invite 6 ▪ invite 7 ▪ invite 8 ▪ invite 9 ▪ invite 10
invite 11 ▪ invite 12 ▪ invite 13 ▪ invite 14 ▪ invite 15
invite 16 ▪ invite 17 ▪ invite 18 ▪ invite 19 ▪ invite 20
i'll try to periodically check if any have been used and cross those out.
...paypal issue?
ok so paypal doesn't like working with sites that allow nsfw. as a result, you need a credit card in order to donate to pillowfort, buy one of those insta-registration keys, or subscribe to premium features*. i personally happen to have a credit card and would be willing to help out anyone who trusts me enough to send the money to me via paypal, but i realise chances are only my friends will do this.
some users are currently organising various activities for the purpose of letting people who only have paypal contribute to the site's survival. it's not super relevant for new users and won't get you access to premium features, but i thought i'd mention it anyway in case someone loves the concept of the site so much they want to support it immediately. a fundraising community has been created to collect posts of that nature!
*premium features are strictly limited to two categories of things:
fun little extras that no one truly needs
higher image upload limits, because obviously big images take up bandwidth and are therefore a reason for increased costs
you will never need to pay for vital accessibility features or anything of the sort. :)

A disgruntled Tumblrina (gender-neutral) made a website and why you should too.
Or "reject social media, return to personal websites".
PART 1: THE PART WHERE I CONVINCE YOU TO MOVE TO PERSONAL WEBSITES
So, the Web 2.0 social media infested landscape seems to be crumbling before our very eyes. Reddit's leadership is increasingly greedy, Twitter is sinking under the weight of Elon's massive, yet increasingly fragile ego, Tumblr is slowly turning into another lifeless corpo-fest, complete with the layout, Instagram continues to be vapid and soulless and Facebook seems to be going the way of MySpace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(feel free to check the alt text on these, btw)
In these troubling times, where everything looks the same and you're expected to be milked for every dollar you're worth, what is a disgruntled Internet surfer such as yourself to do? Move to an untested alternative that's bound to get overrun by fascists thanks to poor moderation? Stay the course on the sinking ships you're used to?
Well, what if I told you that we've solved this problem way back in the 90's and early 2000's and were merely duped by the Big Zuck into forgetting our legacy? What if there was a cure for the sanitized, dull social media hellscape?
Tumblr media
It takes a bit of work, when compared to just using a social media site, but even if your particular use case makes switching difficult (ex. an artist looking to promote their work), it's still a good secondary option to consider.
The core appeal is the ability to customize and individualize, make a corner of cyberspace unabashedly yours,
It can also be an exciting avenue of creative expression, giving whatever you want to say a unique coat of paint,
Most website hosting services are a bit more lax about what you can do on them, due to changes in the profit structure (rather than depending on advertisers and investors, they either have a premium option to give supporters perks, have another product, or, in the case of paid services, you renting that space IS the product),
If you want your website to be more accomodating and accessible, you don't have to file tons of feedback - do it yourself,
If you'd like to connect with other webmasters and promote each other's websites, we have webrings - sets of circular links that connect websites with something in common, be it a topic, aesthetic or friend group,
You're less likely to have your stuff purged by an ill-advised change in policy (especially if you have a backup of your files somewhere),
The more people do it, the less power those massive social media corpos have over the internet,
It can be a load of fun!
If I have you convinced, keep reading into part 2. If you just wanna see what I did, skip to part 3. If neither, feel free to continue scrolling. I won't hold it against you. You'll be missing out, that's all.
PART 2: SO, YOU WANNA MAKE A WEBSITE!
Good choice, here's some resources!
sadgrl's absolute beginner's guide to Neocities - what it says on the tin!
W3Schools - a more in-depth tutorial site, a learning resource so excellent it substituted for what I was supposed to learn in technical highschool (because our teacher just told us to go on W3Schools instead of teaching us shit)
A list of free layouts for your website - whether to use as a base to learn from or to simply take for yourself,
Neocities - the posterchild for free website hosting for personal websites. Doesn't allow video or audio, but you can get around that by linking those files from elsewhere. Beginner-friendly to a fault - once you have an account just drag and drop your files in,
Gitlab (& Gitlab Pages) - a more advanced option, but it has a few advantages of its own. Gitlab is a website hoster second and a version control service first - which is programmer speak for "keeps track of changes in your code and stores a backup of it online". it helps a lot when working on multiple devices or co-writing with a friend. And secondly, you can use Gitlab Actions to automate putting your website up (even on Neocities, like I do!)
My askbox - I am not joking, if you have any questions about any of this, I'd love nothing more than to help you out!
But with most of my indie web propaganda out of the way, it's time.
PART 3: Welcome to Timewatcher OS.
Tumblr media
Of course, because I couldn't be normal when it comes to making a website, I had to turn it into a fake operating system. Each subpage is an "app", opened in a separate embed window. It has unlockable wallpapers (no pay2win, prommy). There's bideo games on it! I even made a music player for it so I can share my incongruent music tastes!
Like I said in my Tumblr bio, if I ever go radio silent for more than a month, it means I've gotten fed up with this hellsite and moved to my own homepage permamently. And I highly advise you make an option like this for yourself too! Lastly, if any of y'all would like to start a webring, do let me know in the askbox - I'm down to manage it if I'm not alone in there.
Anyways, I hope I convinced you to make a website, or at least check out some of the cool sites you've been missing out on! Hope to see you on the Old Web!

listened to a podcast from tumblr ceo matt mullenweg abt his plans for tumblr and such and wrote down some quotes i found Interesting . (some are not word for word bc auditory processing + memory etc but i tried to stick to what he said as much as i could)
(on being ceo of a social network) "it is as hard as being the leader of a country"
"it needs to do a good job at showing you things you want to see- so both the people you follow but maybe also exposing you to new things you don't know about yet"
"people want their own home on the web, they want it to be something reflects them, not the needs of an advertiser"
"how do we make this amazing and really give the tumblr community what they deserve, and also give the world an alternative from these closed-proprietary advertisement-driven social networks?"
"you can have custom themes, you can customize it every little bit .. what we wanna do is making it be the best of both worlds, giving you the full customization that u currently have on tumblr, that u also have on wordpress, but still provide a streamlined interface, particularly on mobile ... you kind of move in and out of that full customization"
"that's ultimately what we're about, is giving power in the hands of users"
"what people really want isnt what they say they want ... its kind of like expressed preferences vs stated preferences ... thats probably why [other social medias] dont give u total control over ur algorithm"
"i want to have a path where you can start with, call it 'just' a tumblr ... but if you want to turn that into an e-commerce store, or customize it in a different way, or build a newsletter, or a mailing list, or create a membership site- these are all things that are supported by wordpress today"
"tumblr's userbase are primarily young .. more women than men which isnt common in technology .. its a very safe place and vibrant community for lgbt+, i think its over a quarter of the userbase.. kind of a place for art and artists"
"how do we make that a path to the wordpress open source community ... excited about ..bringing a younger demographic into wordpress"
"[the amount of new users from twitter/reddit are] less than you would think in the long term"
(to reddit/twt migrants) "give us feedback! what do you miss from the old thing when you move over?"
"i'd definitely like it to be as big as twitter or instagram"
"for tumblr for example i think [AI] could make our developers a lot more productive, their coding could be checked/tested by ai, .. that'll allow us to do a lot more .. maybe our pace of development could increase."
"ai can be a huge help in assisting on moderation, if it could help flag things before people even report them, that someone could look at and review."
"the algorithm [for the feed/dashboard] is a form of ai- its really machine learning, people use the terms interchangeably- if we could make the feed a lot better, we could tweak it and really learn the things u want to see and the people u want to follow"
"it could provide some really cool tools, when u think of the generative ai stuff, whether its dall-e or midjourney. so much of what people do on tumblr is expressing art and creativity, and theres some people who are resistant to this, but im actually hearing far more artists that are like 'wow! this is another tool in my toolbox!' its not just like using it instead of doing ur work, it's helping with the first draft, or helping u come up with new ideas, or maybe accelerating part of a workflow. so i see it like a new type of paintbrush, or new colors they can use. they see it as a new way to express their creativity. to me that's also the future. .. just like any other tool, like when we moved from typewriters to word processors."
(asked if generative AI worries him) "bad actors using ai to do more bad things .. that's definitely smth that's gonna happen, that's true with any new technology. if u rob a bank before, u used to have to get away on a horse, now you can get away on a car [laugh]. so like, think of it like that. we don't say "oh, banks are gonna be robbed so much more cuz now people can drive away faster". the good guys have cars too, so the police have cars .. it becomes something that is part of society .. there's more good people than bad people"

I would prefer if this site didn't go under because I enjoy the people that I follow on here. I enjoy having my friends see otherwise inaccessible parts of my thoughts, and vice versa, in ways that I don't think are replicable anywhere else with this degree of freedom. I fucking hate twitter and I will never use it or its clones for anything other than looking at porn.
and at the same time I recognize that by talking about the issue I'm indirectly contributing to it, and there's part of me which would experience a great amount of cathartic joy in knowing the fucking retarded moderation practices which have led to me losing thousands upon thousands of posts which I put real effort into backfired, and lead to even a small loss of profits by the cocksuckers administering it—due to an exodus of one of its most profilic demographics. because this keeps happening.
I very much want tumblr to fail, even if it just in the eyes of other online trannies whose opinions I respect, because it has failed me several times, and I didn't have any recourse to publicize the ways in which this annoyed me or made me feel completely ostracized (because I wasn't a white anglophone with as massive a following of normie tgirls, but I diverge). I'm still mad about that. outside of using tumblr as a personal blog and baring some extremely embarrassing shit as my only means of connecting with other trans people in over a decade, I spent literal months researching things which where deeply niche and couldn't be found anywhere else on the web, that where ultimately struck down without any explanation, coincidentally around the same time I started to notice a tangible uptick in radfem harassment directed at myself and my friends. and it had almost killed my interest in writing anything ever again.
it's presumably wishful thinking to want to attribute this to the moderation being *explicitly* malicious against trans women posting about transfeminism, rather than plain incompetence, understaffing, the typical issues that plague social media moderation, but the fact that I can now make that connection without sounding like a conspiracy theorist, because they plainly admitted it, is pissing me off so much.
for every trans woman that got deleted for posting a stupid, albeit completely empty death wish on a member of staff, how many dozens were forced to quit the site simply because moderation was actively targeting us?

the violent threat of erasing someone's existence because they said something you don't agree with is a big reason i care so much about educating and expanding the DIY web. i think it is a vital tool against censorship and wreckerism to own as much as possible of, understand as much as possible of, your own infrastructure to connect with the internet.
over the last few years i've watched as tumblr started to move from (this is a niche use case but bear with) something i could in good faith recommend as a free and easy-to-set-up basis for an art portfolio site to something which is (ugh god i'm going to say it) actively going through Enshittification™️ and employs more and more coercive tactics to remove and paywall any meaningful sense of ownership or expansive/extensible-ness over users' individual blogs
it used to be by default when you shared a link to a post it would go to username.tumblr.com/postid and now it goes to tumblr.com/username/postid which means if you don't manually edit the link to the original formation, it forces whoever clicks on the link to make an account to view what you've shared (user capture)
it used to be free to connect a custom domain to a tumblr blog (which is a vital defense against censorship which means you can migrate to a new service/host without losing "brand recognition" with no economic penalty) and now you have to pay monthly and they want you to buy domains directly from them (i'm not sure if it's actually possible to connect a domain tumblr doesn't own to a blog now – this is the Only reason that when i converted this from a project portfolio to a personal blog that i did not set up that project on a different tumblr account and instead now have a tumblr version and a portfolio site which i self-host – i can't use tumblr as the portfolio because i can't connect the URL for free/at all)
the popups and aggressive prompts to make an account when viewing someone's blog at username.tumblr.com have become so severe that where i can i implement custom CSS to suppress them
when you DO make an account the popups prompting you to pay for ad-free browsing are again, increasingly aggressive
this all points to a pattern where tumblr doesn't see itself as a service, it sees itself as a business which needs to make profit from its users (which makes sense, it's a private company and it's following the same pattern as every other site which is free to use – draw people in with a slick user experience and no downsides, run out of VC money or whatever, start to Need To Make A Profit, make the platform ever more extractive to the point where nobody likes using it but nobody sees anywhere else to go – literally the definition of enshittification)
this is a large selling point for federated social media for me. moving your account but retaining your 'social graph' is a Feature of federated social networking. you can migrate to a new server if your admin makes a decision you don't like without losing ~most of your social connections, you can also choose to set up on a server which has moderation policies in line with what you want to post. you can also set up your own dang server and literally be your own mod/admin if you have a bit of spare cash and technical knowledge (warning: this can get expensive). this is also why i advocate for everyone to own a domain and run their own site, as independently as possible from corporate infrastructure, as if someone has your website bookmarked and your host blacklists you, you can just upload your website somewhere else and point your domain there instead
i would suggest everyone who cares about their tumblr account* export a backup of that data as soon as they can – tumblr provides a feature to do this which retains your media and a record of your social connections. i think it also provides some of it in .html form which you could upload to any web server if you wanted to. i would also suggest everyone owns a domain for a personal homepage, and maybe makes a 'home' online somewhere that's not here – my domain registrar of choice is namecheap and i pay about $15/yr for my main domain. you can get free web hosting in a bunch of places – github pages springs to mind, codeberg also offer this if you don't want it to be owned by microsoft. i think netlify still has a free version. there are options! owning a domain means you're free to move between these options without anyone really noticing anything different. i highly, highly recommend it for anyone who likes blogging freely without living in fear of being censored.
*in the current context i am mostly talking to trans women here but i think this advice applies to anyone, nobody is not at risk of being banhammered for basically nothing, these things tend to escalate in severity over time
anyway i love trans women and i am so angry about the decisions unfolding here but it's also totally Precedented and Typical for corporate owned online infrastructure and there are things you can do to insulate your social connections and retain backups of the things you make here. ultimately posting here creates value for the corporate platform owners and there are ways to blog which don't do that!

A'ight, I'll chime in. I'm not super excited about the announced changes. I'm on Tumblr bc of how unlike it is to other social media sites. I LIKE that it's my own little slice of heaven. And I DON'T like that Tumblr doesn't seem terribly concerned with how this affects their current user base.
But... I'm thinking we ought to be careful here. We are stuck in this capitalist machine whether we like it or not. Tumblr isn't a quirky website - it's a business. And Tumblr has a major problem: it's user base doesn't care if the site is porfitable. And the users shut down every proposed solution. AAndd users ESPECIALLY don't want to play into this "pay to win" scheme going on (like going ad free or paying for check marks). So how does Tumblr run it's business when the users don't care if they make money? And why would Tumblr care what the users think if they'll be damned anyway?
Well, this. :/
I don't have the answers here. Business, money, art, creations, commerce? It's all inter-connected. And content without SOME kind of an algorithm COULD potentially turn into little more than a popularity contest - especially if new users don't know how to find the content they want and just end up using the search feature or something (I'm no expert here).
No money means no tumblr. No money means no art! I think that some users are ready to jump ship and would probably disagree with some of my points here. Which is cool! If one of these users happens to be a web developer and creates an app for us to find refuge in, send me an invite link!
But for now, we should maybe find a way to cope with the upcoming changes because I don't think our complaints are going to drown out the big red line on their accounting sheets.
P.S. BUT TUMBLR, WHAT'S REALLY NOT OKAY? Your underwhelming response to the LGBTQ+ bias in your moderating algorithms! THIS MUST BE COMPREHENSIVELY RECTIFIED IMMEDIATELY. I have limited tolerance for capitalism but I have no tolerance for systemic homophobia.

Social media makes me so tired
Tumblr has the same stupid people and same discourse as all other platforms
Like I'm not sure staying here is worth it for me
Yeah I can self moderate and unfollow people if I want. But I can't actually escape them permanently, cuz topics get reblogged, sometimes I don't wanna unfollow people for one singular shitty/online/out of touch/young and naive take
The leftism and anti capitalism game on this webbed site is weak af as well. Which is only natural, people who care about anti capitalism and doing something don't waste their time on social media because it's ineffective, distracting, or both (this is a self call out, I should do more).
But it also keeps the few people on social media who do care about doing something stuck and hopeless, demotivated
The hype of this not being twitter has worn off, just like my hype over twitter not being instagram has. I'll be getting myself something better soon enough probably (friends who are not on any social media maybe)

What You Don't Own Can Ban You If You're Inconvenient
Tumblr media
In a strangely recursive episode in the ongoing series "social media sites you don't own are not okay to have as your primary web contact," Facebook took down a post I shared in July about another Meta company's bad moderation. My post that was removed was a news story about a Toronto City Councillor whose Instagram account was suspended because it "pretended to speak for a public figure, like a politician," despite the fact that she is, in fact, that politician, noted because... well, social media sites you don't own are not okay to have as your primary web contact. My post, Facebook now claims, violates their community rules.
Tumblr media
Which community rule? It claims it was spam, trying to get "likes, follows, and views in a misleading way."
Tumblr media
I'm not quite sure how saying "don't rely on centralized social media" is trying to get more attention on social media. This isn't the first time, or first way that Meta (and other social media networks) have banned, shadow-banned, or even altered content that is true, but they don't like or don't want to compete with. It is absolutely their right to do so. There's a fake downtown near where I live. It looks like a downtown shopping area. It's even called "The Greene Town Center." It is emphatically not a public downtown. It is a shopping mall. The entirety of the development is private property, not public land like a downtown. Shortly after it opened, several sociology students at my university did a project comparing how they were treated based on how they were dressed. Surprise: Those who were dressed poorly were quickly intercepted by Greene security -- yes, they have mall cops -- and "encouraged" to leave {1}. They can do that -- because no matter how much The Greene looks like a downtown, it is not. In the same way, social media sites that are centrally owned -- all of them -- are like the Greene. People talk about "my wall" or "my feed" or "my page", but it isn't. So while it's not cool that Meta took down a post criticizing another Meta company... they are perfectly within their rights to do so. It's their space. Not mine, and not yours. Don't forget that. {1} This was shortly after it opened, around 2010. Featured Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay Read the full article

(going to try not to spend too much time perfecting this and just say whatever comes to mind)
so like I legitimately do want to try out Tumblr Live for real but:
all of the missing integrations with the rest of the site aside (some will be addressed, I'm sure, who knows to what degree in the end), the actual reason I can't figure out how to use the damn thing and why I think it feels so foreign to much of the Tumblr userbase is that
there are no real descriptions of what the streams are about? the UI is clearly focused on profile pictures, and those profile pictures are mostly faces. the culture the Livebox software is seemingly optimized to facilitate making connections in—and I'm basically direct-quoting Meet Group's public mission statement stuff on their website to try to see it from their side—has an obvious focus on what you look like that Tumblr's established culture for the most part doesn't. this is fine(ish) in and of itself as an addition to the other things the Tumblr community focuses on. if I had to try and summarize in literally five seconds, I would say Tumblr is about sharing the things you like, the things you care about, and sometimes the things you do and make. go look at the current Tumblr Live (Livebox) UI and zoom all the way out: where is there space for those things? currently, there isn't any, though there is a big focus on tips:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, listen: I'm (kind of) a developer. I get it. you build the user experience you want out of the tools you have, and you can't wait to ship until what you've built is a flawless expression of your vision for your product. I don't think the decision makers at the top of Tumblr think that an unmodified out-of-the-box Livebox integration is exactly what they think Tumblr needs (both to be a better product and to stop losing money). I have more faith in them than that, and you should too if you want to think about these things in any even vaguely productive way. (let's ignore the possibility that the "stop losing money" side of things heavily outweighs the "make a good product" side due to financials; as a) if that's true, we're screwed regardless, and b) I hope Matt has enough cash to be able to burn a whole bunch for a while to try to save the only good large social media site on the web; if so, thanks Matt, I owe ya one.)
but if we're actually engaging with this line of thinking, that of course means that as a decision maker, you only partner with meet group if they have something you want and couldn't more efficiently make yourself. that happens all the time! there's going to be a trade-off there. that's fine! you paid the price of "this white-label UI isn't well-suited to my website at all*" and you got something valuable in exchange.
*I have no qualms about stating this as an objective, undisputed truth; it's possible some would disagree and that's fair.
now, what I'm thus forced to speculate about is... what did Tumblr get out of the exchange? if I had to guess, the things Tumblr would not have if Matt was just like "guys please implement the same feature set as Livebox" would be like a) a bunch of livestreaming code because that stuff is a pain in the ass, b) a bunch of hosting services (Live is on another domain so I assume Livebox hosts it?), c) some amount of expertise in—I guess—monetizing parasocial relationships via microtransactions? and d) some cash up front probably. (edit: also, moderation tools/services; those are big.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, if I'm right about all of that, and admittedly it's not all that well-educated of a guess... then, you know, sure. I just hope everyone's on the same page re: which of those things are the benefits and which are the costs. I'm happy for "the social network that I like but which costs more to run than it makes even with what I feel from the outside is not much development staff at all" to have some more money, and I'm happy for said development staff not to have to spend their time setting up RTMP servers or whatever; that's boring as hell and a waste of everyone's time, I'd imagine.
but in the bigger picture—again we are ignoring the "oh god cash" possibility—you pull the trigger on a bet like this because you think the resources will help you build something that's, well, uniquely Tumblr. you already paid someone to try and elucidate what that means:
You'll make friends. You'll fall in love. You'll make enemies. You'll become unrecognizable to your friends and family. They'll worry about you. You'll be okay. You're on Tumblr.
Every video you find, every quote you reblog, every tag you curate, every waterfall GIF you secretly gaze at in wonder—that's all you. You're the explorer. We're just a map you all keep on making. Welcome home. Welcome to weird. Make it yours.
if I were a product manager, my giant whiteboard would have "click the square with the person's face and see ways to tip them" on the left, and "you'll make friends / you'll fall in love / you'll make enemies / you'll become unrecognizable to your friends and family" on the right, and a whole bunch of arrows and question marks in the middle.
and yeah, I guess from my perspective, the thing that makes Tumblr Live interesting is that, presuming that some of that middle part of the whiteboard starts to get filled in, I am fascinated to watch how it does. and I think you have to acknowledge that a) they will actually try it and b) they have a nonzero chance of success, if you want to say actually meaningful things about Live as a feature.
(I was primarily excited for the feature to come to desktop web because that had the potential to add a lot to step one of this, on my imagined version of the whiteboard. yes, the vast majority of tumblr users use the apps, us desktop web traditionalists have to acknowledge that... but I would also imagine that a significant amount of the content creators who drive all of this engagement are on desktop, and in my mind "you can share what you are doing in your computer" is the path to a lot more compelling, Tumblr-y live content than "point your phone camera at something"—essentially, in the grand scheme of things I imagine desktop web Live as the source of the content you view on iOS/Android Live, and I would love to know if the Live team has that thought as well.)

Recently I saw a post going around about how people are overly condescending about people not knowing valuable internet skills such as how to curate your experience, and it was a good post that I didn't want to derail, but it reminded me of a closely related issue, so I'm making my own post:
When it comes to a lot of common fanfic and shipping discourse, I suspect a good chunk of it comes from people noticing a very real problem with Web 2.0 – that is, that the trend toward centralizing content on a few Big Sites makes it way harder to curate one's online experience than it needs to be, and contrary to popular claims, in many ways harder than it used to be – and applying the wrong framework to analyze and solve that problem. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming this brand of wank entirely on this Damned Newfangled Internet, Why Back In My Day--
But I am saying that the way the internet operates at this point is definitely a factor.
Look, I got into online fandom in the era where a SINGLE large enough fandom might have enough fanfic archives to fill an entire Monopoly board. This had its own problems (many of these sites could just cease to exist with no warning, whether because someone got tired of maintaining them or because a lot of source media creators were a lot more litigious and small archives didn't have lawyers; a lot of mod teams were unprofessional and inconsistent in which rules they enforced and how strictly and/or would just make up technicalities to remove pieces they didn't like, etc.), and this brand of drama existed then too, but it was a lot less...all-consuming. Back then you could usually just go about your life on Your Big Central Site (usually Livejournal if you were a fannish type) without being asked which “side” of an argument you were on, with no way to answer that wouldn't get you death threats.
Dark fic existed. Smut fic existed. Fics about touchy and upsetting subjects existed. Of course there were always some people who got really upset by that, and there were always regulars and even webmasters of more strictly moderated sites who were really judgy about it and assumed the worst of everyone who used the free-for-all archives, but in that period, by and large the response to people getting belligerent about it was basically “dude, stay off that site/out of that group then, stick to this one where that kind of stuff isn't allowed, leave it alone, it’s not worth it.” It was usually a lot less heated than it is now, simply because people had the option to stick to their own circles without being all but forced to interact with content that upset them if they wanted to be in the fandom at all.
The problem is, that advice doesn't work now that we're mostly centralized on big social media juggernauts and AO3, and “then block the tag/that user” is not actually the same.
The result is that curating your experience used to be done passively – you just stayed on sites and in groups oriented toward the kind of fannish content you wanted to see, and didn't visit the ones that invited what you didn't want, and on Big Sites where everyone mingled, you just didn't follow links you didn't trust – whereas now it must be done actively, in many cases involving downloading a ton of browser extensions, by creating tag and keyword blacklists that you have to configure yourself, which is not only tedious, but really sucks when something bothers you enough that you don't want to be reminded that it even exists and now you have to type it into your blacklist for every new site you visit. Never mind the fact that these measures can fail if someone forgets a tag, doesn’t tag their work properly because they don’t recognize the element as something people are likely to want to block (i.e., something that would get a work removed from a stricter archive before most users are subjected to it), does tag something but does so in a way that’s not picked up by your filters, you’re on a site that doesn’t let you opt out of seeing when and why content has been blocked (which, again, is not exactly a fun time when you blocked something because you don’t want to be reminded it even exists), or someone just decides not to tag something at all. You can block someone who does this or add their version of the tag to your blacklist, of course, but when that happens, the damage is already done. It’s even more likely for this to fail on Twitter and Instagram and TikTok, where The Algorithm is very likely to decide to show you things you never even knew you’d want to block, even more so than just this model where, even if you don't HAVE to follow individuals' whole accounts to see their content for your fandom, you're still more heavily encouraged to than you used to be now that broad site-wide tags have largely replaced groups. The onus of filtering has shifted from webmasters and moderators, to individual social media users who just dare to have boundaries, often for disability-related reasons that make that job a lot more difficult and stressful than it might be for others.
Because of the way the modern internet is structured, modern fandom absolutely has a problem with making it harder than it used to be to avoid what you don’t want to see, and this needs to be addressed and fixed.
Again, I'm not saying things used to be all sunshine and rainbows, or that there are no benefits to centralizing, because there are a lot. However, even positive changes can introduce complications; every change breaks someone’s workflow (and steadily increasing corporate control of the internet isn't even a net positive in the first place), so of course we're having Issues. People love to talk about how rah, back in my day it used to be the wild west out there, "lemon" could be anything from vanilla fluffy smut to hardcore guro porn with detailed illustrations, and the only warnings you got were "don't like don't read" – but, as true as that was, there were other filtering methods. You didn't like how FFN or the big communities on Livejournal were more of a free-for-all than you were comfortable with? You went and made your own archive with blackjack and hookers by just opening up a new Invisionfree forum or something like it to only host/link to the kind of content you liked, or you started a new Livejournal community that banned the content that caused you distress. You invited all your friends. You ignored the broader unfiltered sites and groups unless you were feeling really brave and bored that day.
For all we talk about how things used to be so much worse and more unfiltered, that's really only half true. You were more inclined to accidentally actively click through to a surprise moderate squick, yes, but you would usually stick to sites and groups where any actual major triggers you had weren't allowed and certainly wouldn’t pop up in their full glory in your (now often algorithmically-generated) personalized feed like some kind of horrible jack-in-the-box (unless you were unlucky enough to log in during a 4chan raid, but that wasn’t exactly a daily occurrence like filter failures on Twitter now).
We don't really do that anymore. We don't really have the option to do that anymore, at least not the way we used to. Free and cheap forum hosts still exist, but hardly anyone uses them, because it's hard to populate a new site when the culture has shifted to wanting to maximize exposure more than build community and ALL the members of your my-otp-only-no-lemons-allowed forum and thensome already follow you on Twitter or tumblr.
However, somewhere along the line, fandom largely missed the point and applied a media critique model to this problem. Instead of calling for more websites to adopt (or more accurately bring back) interest-based user-run groups a la Livejournal, or placing more value on people who curate rec lists and building more tools to do so, it’s become a battle over what kind of content is allowed to exist at all. In this environment, depending on which side of the great debate you’re on, either every fanfic is treated as if it has the reach and influence of a major mainstream Hollywood production or more, or you recognize that that model doesn’t really apply so every problem it gets misapplied to gets shouted down as nonexistent.
Now don’t get me wrong, there are absolutely things in fandom that do need to be critiqued using that framework. Fandom has a long history of...not always being kind to marginalized people or characters. The beauty and ugliness alike of fandom is in the fact that fan works, especially fanfics, are mostly created for fun and nothing more. “Crack taken seriously” is so ubiquitous that a lot of it doesn’t even recognize itself for what it is; it’s just part of The Nature of Fanfic. Fan works are often unpolished; the quality is all over the place (and that is a good thing), because the barrier to entry doesn’t exist – people can just post whatever the hell they want, and in some cases this is actually more true than ever as the internet becomes more and more centralized, as people usually don’t need to go as far out of their way to search for the specific websites that allow their type of content. The downside is, this often means that because no one is reviewing someone’s work before publishing, no one is there to say “dude, what the fuck is wrong with you, that’s racist as hell, we are NOT gonna publish that”. This is definitely something worth addressing using the media critique framework.
But that’s not the same problem as the fact that content that explores uncomfortable and potentially triggering topics exists, and we are having trouble keeping it contained because the modern internet is built around trying to smash everything vaguely related together for Maximum Engagement.
Some people have liked to explore darker subjects in fiction for as long as fiction has existed, and this is especially common with marginalized people who may have a complicated relationship with darker subjects in fantasy because of their real life experiences. However, for just as long, some people have preferred to stick to fantasies that feel safe, often for the exact same reasons. This is because humanity is extremely varied. It’s really that simple. Darker fiction will never cease to exist, even if it turns out to be true that it “should” (which I highly doubt is the case). What we need to be doing is working on more ways to make that fact safer to navigate-
Which is the exact opposite of what the modern internet is doing.
The modern internet is mostly about getting more eyes on every page to sell more ads, to the extent that even when it’s not about selling ad space, it’s created a cultural expectation of centralized content delivery where more engagement is always better and there's no such thing as a non-target audience. The modern internet is about cramming as much Content on Big Sites as possible, both commercially and culturally – mentally, we’re often averse to taking the few minutes it takes to sign up for a new site when we have bigger hubs we consider Good Enough. Oftentimes, the modern internet is about obsessing over your engagement numbers to the point of feeling dejected and personally slighted if someone doesn’t want to see content you know is a trigger for them because Your Friend Is Not Contributing To Number-Based Support. All the art is on Twitter, all the fic is on AO3, and if you want to browse those sites to look for it (especially Twitter with its very limited tag room) you will almost certainly run into content that will feel tailor-made to personally upset you, and if you want to engage with your fandom at large you have very few other options.
It’s just plain not good for fandom. At least AO3 is made for fandom, but it has its flaws anyway, because yes, the fact that it’s not made to sell ad space and user data may mean the features that get made are made with improving the actual human user experience in mind, but it also means...not nearly as many resources to make better features in the first place. (Block function? Easier filtering system? Saving filters account-side? I know they're working on some of these, but...well, the fact that they don't have the corporate backing of Twitter and Facebook is painfully obvious.)
We need to go back to embracing smaller and more specialized archives; we don't have to give up the security that AO3 provides to do that if we just mirror or link works hosted there. We need to create more rec lists. We need to push for more sites to adopt/bring back groups (it's sad when Facebook is doing something more right than any other major site). It would be great if someone could create an engine to let people easily create their own archives where users can embed AO3 fics, to let authors and readers alike take advantage of AO3’s protections while allowing readers the full benefit of passive curation again.
We need to recognize that Web 2.0 is just plain hostile to meaningful human interaction and community-building, perhaps especially in fandom.

Mmmhm. I wonder... I think it's pretty annoying when you make a harmless post about ship hate and ant1s immediately jump at you screaming 'pedophilia!!1' when that wasn't the topic at hand at all. But also, I think... at the end of the day you need to apply your moral philosophy to extreme circumstances in order to check whether it is logically consistent or not, right? So, it's mostly ant1s saying that stuff, but I think sometimes people really don't know what to think about this, you know? (1)
I think there are some people that genuinely don't know what to think about the topic of fictional content and censorship because -within purity culture- the response to the claim "fictional content shouldn't be censored" is always going to be "then /what/ can be censored?". And that question does, indeed, bring up extremely dark and questionable topics, such as children being sexualized in media for merely sexual purposes. (2)
But I guess what I'm trying to say is all this moral panic arises from the fact that "fictional content, no matter how squicky or distasteful, remains fictional and shouldn't be censored on that basis" is very difficult to understand for people that grew up with more traditionalist/authoritarian values? I think behind every ant1 post lies one perpetually unsaid question: "When is censorship okay?" And the fact that there isn't one simple, easy answer can be scary to some. I guess. (3)
I do believe some of the points antis raise are interesting and worth discussing, because in the end we're all asking ourselves the same thing: "when is it okay to censor fictional content, and under which criteria". The difference is that factors such as cultural/religious/political background and how we are raised make us react differently to that question... thus the split between anti shippers and pro shippers. (At leats that's my hypothesis) What do you think? (4)
A lot of good thoughts here, imo.
I strongly agree that anti-shippers make a lot of points that are worth a debate. The principles on which anti-shipping takes a theoretical stand are principles that should be listened to and considered! But when they are enforced with harassment and abuse, it’s hard to have an honest discussion. :(
Similarly, I agree that there’s value to taking a position to its extreme and seeing if you are willing to uphold it even when dealing with things you personally find horrifying or disgusting. I’d like to talk about that briefly later in this post.
But I’m particularly thinking about this part:
I think behind every ant1 post lies one perpetually unsaid question: "When is censorship okay?"
Your hypothesis is that anti-shippers are trying to locate and lay hard boundaries, essentially: they want rules - rules that cater to their personal comfort - to exist. And honestly ... I get that.
Once again, I feel like it comes back to tumblr/twitter/web 2.0 being awful. These sites have ‘rules’, but they are broad and poorly enforced. (In fact, because the profit model is geared to user participation, some moderate strife is good for business - angry people tweet/tumbl/update their status more and spend more time interacting with others, which means more sweet advertiser money.) The boundaries that used to exist between people with conflicting interests are gone.  and some people really struggle with knowing they share internet space with others whose interests disrupt their personal comfort/allowing others to be different and not evil incarnate. Some people can’t tolerate moral ambiguity or cultural differences or anything that causes them discomfort.
A certain kind of person decides that if they cannot have a space that is entirely separate from somebody they disagree with, the person they disagree with isn’t allowed to have any space at all. They will make and enforce rules that exclude the person they disagree with. That is the kind of person who becomes an anti. (and the hands-off behavior of abuse teams on web 2.0 social media means that anyone who wants to set some rules and enforce them via harassment and intimidation has free reign to try to do it.)
(When the world fails to provide a clear-cut answer to ‘when is censorship okay?’ anti-shippers decide the answer is ‘censorship is okay when I say it is.’)
on the subject of taking a position to its extreme and deciding if you would enforce it, please go under the cut:
a friend of mine is of the opinion that anti-shippers always see ‘they defend pedophilia!’ under every ‘ship and let ship’ post because they’ve already taken it to the extreme in their head, because for them there is no gray area: there is only black and white. When someone tries to talk about freedom of expression with nuance, they must eliminate the nuance, cutting to the heart of what they see as a clear line between good and evil, right and wrong: do you support people’s right to share content that includes (fictional) child harm? Because if you do, you’re a monster. The end.
But tumblr encourages this kind of b&w thinking. And directly answering questions about only the most extreme circumstances under which you would stick with your principles in a place like tumblr is extremely dangerous. Tumblr’s reblog function means that only your most extreme position could be shared virally, separated from the rest of the content of your blog and eliminating all nuance from your statement. This helps no one!
And this is why I refuse to talk directly about extreme circumstances on this blog for the most part.  people can extrapolate my most extreme positions from my stated opinions without me getting explicit in ways that would, I believe, be counterproductive when the whole point is to remind people that nuance is important.

How do I become a recruitment consultant using LinkedIn recruit tool?
The sphere of recruiting is changing rapidly and employers are increasingly relying on social networking websites to source talent, and finding that some of them are very effective. LinkedIn, in particular, has been cited by many employers as an extremely effective way of recruiting talent. According to our 2013 study of hiring practices, Get More info the majority of Northeast Ohio organizations surveyed (61%) use LinkedIn to recruit.
Although all social media platforms can be used for different purposes in the recruiting process, it's safe to say that LinkedIn is more professional and business focused, as well as more relevant to recruiting, as candidates can highlight their resume, skills, experience, connections, and general influence in the field. The platform is quickly becoming the choice for professionals to look for jobs and find employment - and for employers when sourcing talent.
We've collaborated with Amy Neumann, director of search engine optimization, search engine marketing, and social media optimization at ERC's Preferred Partner, Cleveland.com, to provide 10 tips on how to use LinkedIn to successfully recruit candidates.
  1. Develop a company profile
Employers should create a company LinkedIn profile, keep their profiles updated, share information about their products and services, link to their blog and other social media websites, showcase their employees and testimonials, and highlight their career opportunities. Ideally, employers should also routinely post relevant and engaging content for their followers such as blog posts, articles, videos, and pictures.
Encourage candidates to follow your company on LinkedIn, and even allow them to apply directly from your profile, like Coca Cola does.
 2. Screen and verify candidates
LinkedIn is helpful in providing a fuller picture of a candidate's capabilities versus simply a resume, job application, or brief personal introduction. It can also be effectively used for screening and verifying capabilities, credentials, and skills prior to contacting candidates. You can view a candidate's endorsements, recommendations, education, prior work experience, and interests within LinkedIn.
Additionally, according to Amy, viewing the groups in which candidates are involved and their participation in them provides insight into their level of skill.
 3. Reach candidates through InMail, job postings, and sponsored jobs
Amy also recommends using LinkedIn’s InMails to personally reach out to candidates. You can use InMail, your internal inbox at LinkedIn, for private messaging with candidates as well as to request assistance from your network or select professionals to find a qualified candidate.
LinkedIn also has "Sponsored Jobs" in which employers may bid for the top placement in the "Jobs You May be Interested In" section of the LinkedIn homepage.
4. Participate in groups and post status updates
Posting status updates draws attention to yourself and your business, and it's an easy way to reach out to your network.
Also, LinkedIn groups are an ideal way to source candidates and you can post positions in them. However, some groups limit recruiters from continually posting open positions if they do not regularly interact with and participate in the group.
