2021 was the year of a multitude of events, big and small; in random order: we survived another year of the pandemic, I finished therapy, Martyna passed her driving license exam, I worked all year on the Anew series and regained the pleasure of photographic storytelling, I taught about four hundred didactic hours of classes and promoted six diplomas, exhibited Zersetzung in Poznań’s Centrala, won the Urbanautica Institute Award, Martyna finally had a birthday party in the summer, and as a birthday present I got through C19 without extensive damage, we showed the Panorama of the Polish countryside at the Venice Biennale, together with APP we got a Spojrzenia Award and a Polityka’s Passport nomination, eventually my Mju broke down, so I bought another one and it also broke down, we made a film about police violence in cooperation with Amnesty International Poland, two of my friends became owners of motorized two-wheelers and now I have to join (#earlymidlifecrisis), we were on vacation in Wrocław, by the Liwiec and in Gdynia, I got my first important tattoo and then further six more, I have recorded a solo album, an experimental rave concept hour and made music for a theatre play, we released a vinyl with Mazut, for a large part of the year I worked on the Great Project on Smartphones (#2022), students in class used the terms "retro" and "nostalgia" referring to the times in which I was already an adult, I got maced and/or elbowed in the face several times and each time it was from the police, we managed to maintain friendships in the age of not moving from home and being a pixel on someone else's screen, I have almost finished my PhD (#2022) and MA in Opava (#2022), half a year of insomnia and lockjaw, the dog has officially become a water aficionado, I have officially canceled my membership in the gym, but still I didn’t went to the other one (#2022), I was abroad twice in the Czech Republic and once in Germany when I accidentally passed the motorway exit to Zgorzelec, I wasn't, as far as I know, at a single concert and didn't play a single one, I finally set up Spotify, to listen to the same shit as before.

It was probably a good year, although a few times it had thrown some curved balls. In December, I came up with the idea of reviving my blog, which I meticulously supplemented with more personal stuff and memoirs from the passing 365 days - I invite you to starzec.tumblr.com. As you can see from the number of tags by 2022, suspense is only rising, so I planned a crazy photo diary using a camera with a date stamp (#2012), but it broke, so we'll have to figure something out. I guess that might be a pretty good summary of what it's like in this lifetime. Like Violetta Villas (a polish pop diva), I kiss you right in the heart. Good luck with the next round around the sun.

If Kate and William were to decide to have a 4th child, it would be in 2022, the Platinum Jubilee year. 2021 is going to be marked by the C19 too, at least until Summer. They will be busy this year both with work and the homeschooling, so having another child would be too much when she has to develop and advertise her early years projects and can't afford getting sick postponing + being preggo and meeting that many people is not ideal

Isn’t the platinum jubilee next year in 2022? I am with you though, the timing is less than ideal and I do believe that their decisions to have children have been made in consideration of what major milestones the BRF has in the diary. This year is Prince Phillip’s 100 year celebration, and next year is the Jubilee. I guess we will find out sooner or later.

Agustus dan Hal-Hal di Dalamnya

Aku tidak membenarkan bahwa kita sudah boleh pergi-pergi, tapi selama seminggu kemarin aku harus keluar karena beberapa urusan. Skip saja karena kali ini aku cuma ingin semacam menulis diary perjalananku seminggu ini, sebagai pengingat yang manis juga untuk diriku sendiri kelak. Dengan beberapa pelajaran yang tak ingin kulupakan.

Dan ketika aku datang memang disambut dengan wajah yang ceria. "Mapnya masih kosongan ya, hehehe. Ini saya kejar cepat pengurusan ijazah, nanti kalau udah selesai saya kabari di grup secepatnya."

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : mempunyai petugas TU yang melayani dengan ramah dan sepenuh hati adalah juga bagian dari rejeki dan suatu berkah.

Aku cuma di kosan, bermaksud tidur siang tapi malah main HP terus, tiba-tiba ada chat dari nomor asing. Katanya ibunya Akbar. Akbar siapa???? Oh ternyata Akbar anak TPA-ku sewaktu KKN dulu. Ibunya Akbar mengirimkanku voice note yang membuatku ingin menangis,

"Alhamdulillah di sini baik, maaf kok saya ngetiknya pake bahasa jawa, hehe. Ini lho mbak Nina, si Akbar anak saya, "kak Nina kak Nina" manggil-manggil terus, selalu cerita, dan nyari nomornya mbak Nina lewat teman-temannya. Salam dari keluarga di sini, khususnya dari Akbar anak saya. Saling mendoakan saling menguatkan juga karena Indonesia sedang seperti ini, saling menjaga kesehatan.."

Ah, Akbar. Kapan-kapan aku ke sana, ya!

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : terkadang kita tak sadar bahwa barangkali orang yang hanya sebentar saja bertemu dengan kita adalah orang yang selalu mengingat tentang kita—dengan baik.

Hari ini aku photoshoot wisuda di taman sekitaran fakultas. Tiba-tiba ada mbak-mbak berboncengan yang berteriak, "congrats yaa, mbak!"

Kamu tau nggak rasanya diucapin gitu sama orang asing yang cuma lewat bisa naikin mood. Aku balas teriak, "terima kasih, yaa!!"

Karena fotografernya adalah teman sendiri, dia nggak mau dibayar, maka kami berniat untuk teraktir makan di King Korea. Sayangnya menu di sana abis-abisan. Yaudah kami akhirnya makan di Happy Bee karena di sana juga lagi ada promo.

Tahu nggak di sana aku ketemu siapa? Ketemu mami-papinya Kenzo! Sangat tak di sangka.

Siapa itu Kenzo? Bayi mungil yang Allah panggil duluan ke surga-Nya karena ada sebuah musibah yang menimpa keluarga mereka pada sekitaran awal tahun. Beritanya viral di media khususnya twitter dan instagram, huhu. Kenzo meninggal dalam usia kandungan 8 bulan karena musibah pohon tumbang yang menimpa kedua orangtuanya. Nggak kebayang gimana sakitnya maminya Kenzo menahan luka karena kecelakaan pohon tumbang waktu itu, gimana papinya kerja keras untuk mencari biaya pengobatan, dan gimana hancur hati keduanya karena kehilangan anak pertama yang telah lama mereka nantikan. Aku mengikuti cerita mereka melalui instagram hingga saat ini. Mereka tegar dan bisa bangkit lagi. Hingga waktu ketemu di Happy Bee kemarin aku berpikir aku harus menyapanya, karena diberi semangat sama orang asing itu gimana ya rasanya terkejut terheran, tapi terharu juga.

"Mbak, maminya Kenzo ya?" Tanyaku.

"Eh iya mbak.. gimana mbak?" Tanyanya balik.

"Saya ngikutin kisah mbaknya di instagram. Sebelumnya saya turut berduka ya mbak karena mbaknya kehilangan Kenzo. Mbaknya hebat banget, kuat banget! Bisa bangkit lagi."

"Makasih ya mbak.. iya soalnya kalo saya nya nggak semangat untuk bangkit lagi, kasian suami saya. Dia bener-bener mulai dari nol lagi. Ndi.. Ndi.." dia kemudian manggil suaminya sambil nunjuk-nunjuk aku. Matanya berbinar-binar dan wajahnya sumringah.

"Ini Endi.. papinya Kenzo." Katanya, memperkenalkan.

"Oh iyaa halo mas!" Kami bersalaman jarak jauh.

Akhirnya kututup percakapan kami, "semangat terus yaa mbak!"

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : kadang kita memang sengaja dipertemukan dengan seseorang untuk membuatnya tersenyum dan bahagia di hari itu walau hanya sebatas sapaan kecil dan kata-kata semangat.

Malamnya aku bersiap untuk ke rumah bude karena besok aku wisuda online. Ya masa aku wisuda online sendirian di kosan, lol. Sayangnya keluarga bude hari itu seharian ada urusan ke Semarang. Aku ke rumahnya dengan membuka kunci sendiri dan menunggu di rumah itu sendirian. Eh nggak, dua orang kucing peliharaan bude menemaniku di dalam.

Hari ini tidak banyak membahas soal wisudaku, tapi lebih ke perkuliahan. Karena budeku seorang dosen hukum, obrolan yang ngalir seru-seru aja tentang jenis-jenis mahasiswa, sampai ke berita-berita besar dan skandal di Indonesia. Aku banyak dapat bocoran tentang apa yang sebenarnya terjadi. Begitu banyak pejabat yang masuk penjara karena fitnah. Apa yang disampaikan berita kebanyakan bullshit. Bahkan sebelum beritanya viral, bude sering ngasih tau aku duluan, tinggal tunggu waktunya aja viral di media. Jadi ketika viral, aku nggak mudah termakan berita karena sudah diceritakan latar belakang kejadiannya.

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : kita bisa bahagia-bahagia saja saat kita mau menerima. Salah satunya menerima kenyataan bahwa perjuangan empat tahun kuliah, dibayar dengan wisuda online. It's okay. Yang terpenting habis ini, kamu mau ngapain?

Aku lelah banget, tapi karena prinsipku gapapa capek di dunia, yang penting nanti bisa beristirahat di surga-Nya, yaudah aku selalu bilang nggak apa-apa aku capek-capek di dunia. Di dunia emang tempatnya capek, di surga nanti tempatnya istirahat.

Seorang temanku mengundangku ke rumahnya untuk makan-makan, ya kami hanya berempat saja. Rumahnya di luar kota Jogja. Aku sudah lama tidak membawa motor dengan menempuh jarak jauh tapi pagi itu aku paksakan diriku. Dan aku bahagia sekali karena jalan menuju rumahnya adalah hijau, hijau, hijau, alias sawah.

Kami makan seafood di pinggir pantai, menikmati suara deburan ombak dan angin pantai yang kencang, juga menemukan surga tersembunyi di antara lahan-lahan pengolahan garam walau itu hanya sebatas sungai yang airnya tenang. Sangat sepi, sunyi, hening, hanya ada suara-suara kami. Vibesnya seperti di Switzerland, halah wkwk.

Hari itu temanku yang ngundang kami makan, happy banget. Orangtuanya juga happy banget liat kami datang.

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : nggak apa-apa capek kalau energi yang terkuras habis ini bisa bikin orang lain happy. Kayaknya harus bikin happy lebih banyak orang lagi karena emang senagih itu perasaan bahagia karena membahagiakan orang lain. Dan paling utama bahagiain orang lain untuk dapat ridho dan berkah dari-Nya. Double kan jadinya, orang lain happy terus Allah juga jadinya cinta sama kita. Aamiin.

Aku ke rumah nenekku di Magelang, oke capeknya double tapi aku bahagia. Iya aku dari Jogja ke Magelang motoran.

Sampai di rumah, nenekku belum sadar dengan kehadiranku, sedang menyetrika di ruang setrika. Aku nungguin setengah jam, maksudnya mau surprise gitu, ini loh aku tiba-tiba datang. Yaudah aku samperin, "sssstt.. tii.. utii.." panggilku dengan berbisik.

"Eh, cucu.." ujarnya dengan mata berbinar-binar.

Hari ini aku belajar bahwa : sebenarnya membahagiakan orangtua itu gampang banget. Kehadiran kamu di sisi mereka aja udah bikin mereka bahagia, walau kamu nggak bantuin apa-apa, hehehehe.

Aku menikmati rutinitas yang biasa kulakukan di rumah nenekku; malas-malasan, hahaha. Nggak juga deng, rutinitas favoritku adalah jajan di warung jajanan pasar dan ngasih ikan makanan sisa makanku yang sengaja kusisain. Lagi-lagi sunyi, hanya ada suara gemericik air dan ikan-ikan yang saling rebutan makanan. Aku juga pergi ke rumah mendiang buyutku, sayangnya hanya ada eyang Du dan eyang No, karena eyang Nik dan eyang Min sedang pergi ke Jakarta. Sorenya aku ambil jahitan di mbak Kar, sudah berbulan-bulan pesananku belum kubayar, hahaha.

"Mbak Kar, boleh minta nomer rekeningnya? Nanti saya transfer aja."

"Yah, saya nggak punya rekening."

Terdiam sejenak. Agak terkejut.

"Oh iya ndak apa-apa, kalau gitu saya balik dulu ya ke rumah, soalnya saya nggak bawa uang cash."

"Ndak mau minum teh dulu, po? Saya bikinin.."

"Eh, hmm boleh deh, ini saya pulang dulu ambil uang nanti ke sini lagi."

"Kapan-kapan aja bayarnya ndak papa."

"Ah nggak, ada kok uangnya di rumah. Bentar ya.."

Akhirnya aku kembali lagi ke rumah mbak Kar sebagai tamu, disuruh ngeteh, kami bercerita sampai magrib.

"Makasih ya udah main ke sini dan mau cerita-cerita.. senang ya kalau dengar cerita-cerita bahagia dari orang-orang." kata mbak Kar sambil tersenyum. Dan perasaan senang yang mbak Kar utarakan itu menular padaku dan menbentuk senyum pula di bibirku.

Mbak Kar, seorang perempuan berkepala empat yang belum Allah karunia keturunan tetapi tetap hidup dalam senyuman dan kesahajaan. Mbak Kar selalu tersenyum setiap mendengarkanku bercerita.

Dan hari ini aku belajar bahwa : kita tetap bisa hidup dalam senyuman meski Allah belum berikan apa yang kita minta, selain itu kita bisa tetap hidup meski tidak mengikuti apa-apa yang ditawarkan oleh zaman.

Hari ini aku belajar banyak dari seorang Mbak Kar dan kesederhanaannya dalam hidup.

Aku pamit dan hari ini kututup dengan menuliskan kehidupanku selama seminggu ini, seminggu yang melelahkan sekaligus menyenangkan. Esok pagi aku akan jogging keliling desa, melewati sawah-sawah, menghirup udara bebas, dan yang terpenting semoga Allah anugerahkan usia panjang untukku, juga mereka yang ada di sekelilingku. Aamiin.

Semoga pembaca sekalian juga berbahagia dimanapun kalian berada. Aku di sini hanya ingin menuliskan hidupku, maaf jika kurang berkenan. Terima kasih sudah membaca, seolah-olah ada yang sedang mendengarkan aku bercerita.💕

Day 47 of Working From Home

Today was a busy day for work. A lot of emails though...

I had pasta from Chilis which was good. Probably will order it again because damn. It was the cajun chickenpasta thing in case anyones curious. Its probably weak heat compared to real cajun spice but my stomach cant handle super spicy (literally, probably would get another hernia) and the chilis cajun spice was enough heat to not need to gorge water.

I am also confused and scared by the man behind the slaughter meme. Its been so long was always a bop.

They started taking our temperature today. They won't say why they decided to start now, but I suspect the person who got tested came back positive. Of course, they can't tell us. HIPPA laws and all that.

My routine keeps having steps added, the temperature is just the latest in a long list of what has become my new normal.

I am told what door to use - this way, they can disinfect it if needed.

I am told to take my temperature - if it's outside the acceptable range I will be given a paper with additional instructions and asked to leave.

I am asked a series of questions - have I experience symptoms? Been exposed to someone with symptoms?

Based on my results, I'm am approved to continue on. My first stop is human resources, to let him know I've been cleared for work. After that, I'm on to the handwashing stations to wash my hands with the aid of a chart explaining how, as though I haven't been doing it since I was a child.

From there, I am allowed to enter my office.

On my desk, I will find my share of disinfectant wipes for the day. The first one is used on all surfaces of my desk, keyboard, and armrests. I give a cursory swipe over the door handle and light switch to supplement anything our cleaning crew has already done, before I sit down and begin my day.

When you are applying for a faculty position at a college or university, your cover letter will differ significantly from the standard business cover letter.

Your cover letter may be reviewed by Human Resources department staff to determine if you meet the basic qualifications for the job. If it does, it will be forwarded to a search committee comprised mostly of faculty members and academic deans.

These individuals will be accustomed to reading more lengthy academic cover letters and resumes or curriculum vitae (CV) than would be customary in the business world. They will also often be more interested in the philosophical foundations for your work than the typical business recruiter.

1. Tips for Writing an Academic Cover Letter

Your initial challenge will be to pass through the Human Resources screening. Review each of the required qualifications included in the job announcement and compose statements containing evidence that you possess as many of the skills, credentials, knowledge, and experiences listed as possible. Also, address as many of the preferred qualifications as possible. Give concrete examples to support your assertions about your strengths.

2. Be Prepared for Faculty Review

Your faculty reviewers will typically have an interest in your philosophy and approach to teaching and research within your discipline. They will also be evaluating how your background fits with the type of institution where they work.

Research the faculty in your target department to assess their orientation and expertise. Emphasize points of intersection between your philosophy and the prevalent departmental philosophy.

3. Target Your Letter

If you possess traditionally valued areas of expertise which are not already represented by the current faculty, make sure to point those strengths out in your cover letter. Tailor your letter to the orientation of the college and adjust the mix of emphasis on teaching and research based on the expectations in that setting.

Colleges will typically want to hire new faculty who are passionate about their current research and not resting on past research credits.

Describe a current project with some detail and express enthusiasm for continuing such work.

Try to do the same with any evolving teaching interests.

Highlight any grants and funding you have received to undertake your research activities. Incorporate any awards or recognition which you have received for your teaching or research activities. Some text should also be devoted to other contributions to the college communities where you worked such as committee work, advising, and collaborations with other departments.

3. Cover Letter Format

Your cover letter should be written in the same basic format as a business cover letter. An academic cover letter is typically two pages compared to a single page for non-academic letters.

Here’s an example of the appropriate format for a cover letter and guidelines for formatting your letters.
