Instead of scrolling Tumblr I'm being productive and using it to type out notes for my dielectrics homework lol
Gauss:
I'm so fuckin good at forgetting stuff so REMEMBER: the dA in Gauss's law is the area of the Gaussian surface. That means it always uses the variable r for the Gaussian surface, NOT the constant R for the object you're looking at
Likewise, charge dist by definition = C/m. Check units and never forget how to get charge from this silly
I guess it's just a given that using Gauss for a sphere gives you an E field in the r-hat direction? Is that assuming the sphere is the only charge? And then I guess for an infinite cylinder it'll be the same, and for an infinite plane it'll be n-hat (n for normal of course)
Oh yeah. I keep getting reminded of Gaussian blur but I guess that's using normal/Gaussian distribution and nothing to do with flux. lol. But Gauss did a lot of work in geometry so there you go
Dipole moment = measure of how separated pos/neg charges are, aka dipoleness (Cm)
Polarization = dipole moment / volume (C/m^2)
Dielectric = insulator that can be polarized by an external E field
Linear dielectric = polarization is linearly proportional to E field strength
Free charges = polarization ensues from these charges, and the bound charges ensue as a result of the polarization. Therefore, if we know the polarization, we can find the free charges. (If polarization is frozen, then free charge = 0?)

Perhaps a bit of a long shot (cause it’s like 1500 pages) but has anyone read Hershel Parker’s Herman Melville biography? My college’s library only has vol. 1 available and I’m debating on whether or not to begin the journey cause well. It seems to be its own 3-year journey lol.
Honestly the Funniest part about this is that the main criticism I’ve encountered from reading reviews is that it’s TOO factual. literally just a timeline of Melville’s life lol. But 1500 PAGES !!! I’ll die of curiosity if I don’t read this yknow.

Good luck my brethren

never convince yourself to pursue a major you love despite being bad at it. that's the devil talking.

thank you so much for explaining in detail and without contempt. i have math anxiety and maybe dyscalculia and often make small stupid mistakes like that. it doesn't help when ppl treat me badly because of that. asking questions and being corrected and learning should be a positive thing, not being used for someone to look down on you. anyway, i learn best by making mistakes, b/c then it gets drilled into my head. but it's important to not be shamed for making mistakes. i'm starting to overcome my math anxiety and do better. i just need a little extra time to think about it and time to check for little mistakes too. when i get that, i do very well actually. for the first time i am enjoying studying math and physics. thanks again. i will now forevermore think of you with fondness in my heart.❤️🩹
hey you're welcome buddy! i have dyscalculia too and had math anxiety for the longest time. truly the best way ta get over that stuff (less abt the dyscalculia but more abt the anxiety) is having people coach you in a nonjudgmental way! math is so much more enjoyable when you're not worrying about all that stuff :))
(also if you're in the public school system they really just like kill all drive ta learn math its so bad. learning math in college is so much more fun imo b/c you're aroud ppl who reall really care abt what they're learning. they also care ta help you so YOU learn as well)
im lucky ta have had a really cool calc prof that knows the struggle of not feeling "smart enough" ta do math and she made sure ta take her time n explain concepts in full detail when we didn't get something. i hope that things get better for you!
you're not less than for not understanding certain concepts immediately! everybody learns at their own pace :)
