more rambling about a s5 au: lindsey comes back for a redemption arc to act as legal counsel for angel's team. this ostensibly gives gunn a reason to opt out of the lawyer operation, but he does it anyway because he doesn't trust lindsey not to fuck them over.

lindsey acts as a moral foil to gunn, who comes to believe his necessary contribution to the team (since he's no longer their only lawyer) is being the defender of the group's principles while working at w&h. they frequently butt heads while working on a case, but eventually develop a begrudging respect of each other's respective strengths.

this hostile-to-friendly-rivalry arc is tested when it comes out that w&h was responsible for some demon problem that's been plaguing gunn's home community. gunn has, unbeknownst to himself, been somehow contributing to it while working at w&h; lindsey knowingly contributed to it when he was last working there as a lawyer. lindsey is forced to confront who he was, while gunn is forced to confront who he’s becoming.

since he was involved in the project, lindsey uses his insider knowledge to help come up with a plan to fix the problem. they execute it, something goes wrong, and lindsey risks his life to ensure the plan goes off successfully. he expects congratulations and a pat on the back from gunn, but gunn isn't interested in absolving lindsey's sins (or his own), and their warming relationship freezes over.

at some point, gunn lets himself get taken by the senior partners in an effort to deal with his guilt over various lapses in judgment/perceived moral failures. during their rescue mission to the holding dimension, lindsey stays behind in gunn's place so he can escape, assuring gunn that he's the lawyer the team needs right now. their mutual arcs culminate in lindsey rejecting the idea that redemption is done for recognition, and gunn rejecting the idea that guilt/self-punishment is inherently redemptive.

eventually after being busted out by illyria, lindsey is there to empathize with gunn about losing parts of yourself (body, mind, and/or soul) to w&h, relationships to power when you've grown up without it, and what it means to live with the consequences of your actions. both of them reflect on the nature of redemption/forgiveness/intent as they grapple with how to own up to an appropriate share of the blame.

Some questions about LCSYS?

What do they do about hair growth? I'd think hair extensions, but Amane's bangs are really short in her MVs and go past her face in T2, so it seems like it'd be too noticeable?. And Kazui is clean-shaven at the beginning of Cat. Did he record that part shortly after Es went to sleep?

And what about self duplicates? I suppose most of them can get away with camera tricks, but Yuno gets up close and personal with her selves. Amane also has a ton of them that stand close together and move very distinctly.

Ooh, these are really interesting to think about, thank you! >:0 It made me finally look up the length of the canon hiatus (Mar 16 to Aug 3), exactly 20 weeks. The internet says shooting a music video usually only takes like three days to film and a few weeks of editing -- so I think it's doable to plan and film them simultaneously in that time.

I pictured they’d plan the videos immediately upon finishing the trial, to keep the feeling of immersion and all related emotions fresh, but also give them plenty of time to do some more challenging things. This may mean planning trips to certain locations, inviting/persuading certain people to come film, or dealing with hair growth. Kazui does his clean-shaven filming first (since Hinako was already there in Half, it was easy to plan for her to return quickly. Jackalope may have had that worked out before the trial even ended.) Amane is a bit trickier, but I wonder if the bangs themselves are additions 🤔 She wears additional short hair for the video and lets her hair keep growing underneath. She'll be able to grow just over two inches in those 20 weeks. (The thing is, comparing the art, I don’t know if that could’ve happened canonically in that time frame anyways 😅 So I’m allowed to stretch it a bit in the au…)

Now, I was originally thinking they only used camera tricks for any duplicate appearances. Haruka gets a younger stunt double. Fuuta, Shidou, and Mikoto can get by filming the scenes twice in different positions. Yuno has to do a bit with a physical double (seen from behind or used minor effects to make them identical). But now that I think more about it, there was a behind-the-scenes video I saw about the Matrix clones -- despite the mask thing being kinda creepy, I think it’d be incredibly sweet to have that many children on the set. They don’t have to do the full mask process, maybe they all wear wigs/makeup that make them match well enough to show up in the background. Either way, Amane goes from one of the loneliest T1 videos to having a hundred little girls stand around her, march with her, and fight for her <3 If the planning stage of Purge March wasn’t already making her second guess her upbringing, having a literal army of girls just like her hanging out for a few days definitely does.

even for period typical ableism it still drives me nuts for karen to go oh poor matt how can he deal and get around as if he hasn't been blind most of his life at this point and living on his own by himself as an adult for his entire adult life after college and has also lived in the city his whole life like girl use your damn brain he can get around by himself just fine. good god. like take five seconds to use your brain. literally adult man who lives by himself if nothing else that should tell you he is fine and when he needs assistance has the knowledge and ability to go get it you act as if he can't even walk on the sidewalk by himself. he literally shows up to work by himself. it drives me up the wall sometimes how she sees proof of him functioning fine independently literally witnesses it on the daily and still thinks these things. like again foggy isn't great either bc again the period typical ableism (and just general ableism in the world outside of this period as this is a common attitude of viewing disabled people as helpless and unable to function even if they are people who do live independently (and im not touching on people who do need extra support and caretaking in this context. as this post is about these characters in the context of a story. so im talking about what we see there instead of any truly meaningful nuanced way) but the writing here is like. Particularly this way due to the time) he has a modicum more of understanding that matt is literally a capable grown adult man. literally told karen matt is a big boy who can handle himself and then karen went b-b-but you forget he's blind as if foggy hasn't known him for years of his life and is his best friend like PLEASE SEE HIM AS AN ADULT. something i think is really interesting about judaism is that there are movements that simply. do not believe that the torah (the main book of judaism) was written by god. i mean in what other religion would this be widely adopted. why hasn’t similar ideas spread further? what makes judaism different from them? while orthodox claim that jews who believe this are heretical, they are still forced to engage with these arguments that the torah was simply written by people trying to make sense of the world. there are also multiple movements within orthodoxy that force them to engage with this argument as well— like the fact that there are orthodox individuals who believe in science and evolution. if the torah is wrong about adam and eve, what else could it be wrong about? it’s so just so interesting to me.

one thing that fucks me up a lot is that. every time we meet another member of the black rose pirates it’s so much more harrowing for chip. like gillion gets to see his grandpa again and it’s a joyful reunion, sure. jay gets to meet her uncle and gets to confide in him about being a pirate and a ferin and how difficult it is to balance it all. but. but chip

lizzie, roofus, drey, finn. chip doesn’t get happy reunions, he only gets reminders. reminders of the people who raised him and who were his family and who were taken from him in this tragic way and who are never going to be the same after it. he sees the way they were changed by what happened, how old and withered they look and he’s constantly just imagining the horrible TORTURE they must have gone through.

and arlin. each new black rose pirate found begs the question; where’s arlin? where’s arlin and why hasn’t he found him yet? he’s probably asking himself that every time he even sees the old crew.

one day my anxiety is going to kill me

#just nervous rambles before i leave the house ignore me i feel like talking #meine belastbarkeit? geht gegen null #but hey at least i no longer get proper anxiety/panic attacks #i used to have attacks when going to my therapist i couldn't go in we would have to go for a walk lest i feel like i was about to die #i did cried yesterday and nothing bad happened just me being a fucking baby and terrified of messing up #and now i feel so much trepidation of because today is another day to mess up #it helps to think of one of my dogs and how scared she wasof going to the vet (and of other things and how brave she was) #we would have to carry her through the entrance lest she vomit #and there was no way to sooth her and explain what was happening #she would be paralyzed and just let things happen #and it helps to think about that and how she made it through and how i know what is happening and yes it is scary #but it is good and it's growth and i've grown so much and that i can do it if she could do it #it's silly but it has actually helped #meins
