Solomon Northup was a free black man who was illegally held in bondage for twelve years before he regained his freedom. Northup was born to free parents in Minerva, New York in 1808. Little is known of his mother other than she was born a free mulatto. His father Mintus Northup, an emancipated slave, was a farm owner, voted in local elections, and valued education for his sons, Solomon and elder brother Joseph.
On December 25, 1829 Solomon Northup married Anne Hampton and the couple had three children: Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alonzo. The Northup family sold the family farm and moved to Glens Falls, New York where he worked numerous seasonal jobs around their county of residence. His wife also contributed to the family’s income as a part-time cook at various taverns in rural New York State. Northup eventually gained a reputation as a brilliant violinist who entertained large audiences throughout rural New York.
While seeking temporary employment in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1841, Northup was propositioned by Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton to play his violin at an event in New York City. Without notifying his wife and collecting his free papers, he departed with the men. Following his performance in the city, the men convinced Northup to attend a circus with them in Washington City (Washington, DC), where slavery was legal. During the trip, Brown and Hamilton drugged Northup, kidnapped him, and stripped him of his identity. They renamed him Platt and sold him to James H. Birch, a slave trader, in Washington, DC. Eventually Northrup was sold to a Louisiana planter.
Northup recounted his experiences in his memoir, Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841 and Rescued in 1853, from a Cotton Plantation near the Red River in Louisiana which appeared a decade before the Emancipation Proclamation. The book describes in vivid detail the harsh but at times humane treatment he experienced while serving on four cotton and sugar cane plantations. His memoir also describes the torture of other slaves, including the rape of a slave woman.
Northup was finally rescued from slavery with the help of Samuel Bass, a carpenter from Canada, who sent letters to Northup’s family detailing his location. With the assistance of Henry B. Northup, a relative of Mintus Northup’s former owner as well as Washington Hunt, the Governor of New York, and Louisiana Senator Pierre Soule, Solomon Northup was finally located and released from slavery in 1853.
After reuniting with his family, Northup traveled throughout the North and Canada, speaking to abolitionist groups about his experiences as a slave in Louisiana. He also attempted to sue the men involved in his abduction. However, the case was tried in Washington where blacks had no legal rights and standing in court. After several attempts, legal proceedings were dropped in 1857.
There is some uncertainty of what happened to Northup after 1858. At the time of his wife’s death in 1876, some obituaries stated she was widowed but others believe Northup had been kidnapped and again sold into slavery. Despite the confusion over Northup’s death, his memoir remains, along with Harriet Beecher’s Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was released a year earlier, a powerful indictment of the inhumanity of slavery.
Saratoga Springs, New York honors his legacy with an annual Solomon Northup Day held the third Saturday in July. In 2013, Black British filmmaker, Steve McQueen, directed the movie Twelve Years a Slave, which was adapted from Northup’s memoir.

Hello! This is an unofficial tumblr mirror of the Everybody Votes Channel run by @iowadream. The Everybody Votes Channel was a channel for the Nintendo Wii that was operated from February 1, 2007 to June 13, 2013. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (or Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if you lived east of Europe), users would vote in two-option polls through the channel answering banal questions about their food preferences, talents, views of the future, etc.
This blog utilizes the (at the time of writing this) new poll feature on tumblr to replicate the experience of voting on the Everybody Votes Channel by reposting questions polled during the run of the Nintendo Wii. I also aim to recontextualize these polls by placing them on a separate platform a decade - a decade and a half after the fact, as well as raise questions about how cultural views and outlooks have shifted since then. Some of the polls reflect quaint, but relatively dated societal views on topics like technology and physical health. Some of the polls play into now-obsolete marketing campaigns of Nintendo's that begun and ended with the Wii.
I will post two polls a day. Each poll will be posted on its anniversary (for instance, the two polls on July 3rd, 2023 might be polls from July 3rd, 2008 and July 3rd, 2012) until this is not possible to do anymore. Based on the number of available polls, I estimate that this blog will run for a little over 2.5 years. Each poll will be open for 1 week, and at its conclusion, I will post the results from the poll's original run if I find there is an interesting discrepancy, or if someone requests I do so. Each poll has been accessed and reposted from RiiConnect24's archive of english-language Everybody Votes Channel polls.
The polls per day vary from country to country, but each can be generally cleaved into three regions: the Americas, Europe/Oceania, and Japan. The Americas region includes Canada, the US, and most of Central and South America. The Europe/Oceania region includes most of western Europe, mainland Scandinavia, Greece, Australia, and New Zealand. Each of these regions by and large have the same polls across each country, with some exceptions that will be noted (for instance, on February 27, 2007, a poll about American Idol was polled in the US, while a poll about life on mars was polled elsewhere). There is also a fourth category of poll, Worldwide, which was polled on the 1st and 16th of every month, and featured answers from all regions. Polls from the Americas will be denoted with the 🌎 emoji. Polls from Europe/Oceania will be denoted with the 🌍🌏 emojis and will utilize the Australian date for better daily posting diversity. Worldwide polls will be denoted with the 🌐 emoji. I currently do not plan on reposting the Japanese polls, but I will start if enough interest is expressed in them.
And that's it! Have fun voting!

Canadian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen would like Fernando Alonso to win if he cannot
Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have been on the podium together five times so far this season Venue: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal Dates: 16-18 June Coverage: Live text updates and radio commentary of all sessions on the BBC Sport website & app, with live commentary of the race on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds app from 19:00 BST on Sunday. Full details Max Verstappen says that if he cannot win any race this year, he would like to see Fernando Alonso win it instead. Verstappen's Red Bull team have won all seven races so far this year and he says it is possible they could win them all. But the Dutchman said: "If you ask me one driver who I would like to see win a race, it's him." Verstappen, who leads the drivers' championship by 53 points, said Alonso "deserves it - he is a real racer". Alonso, a two-time champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, last won a race for Ferrari in 2013. He spent four uncompetitive years with McLaren from 2015-18, stepped away from Formula 1 for two years to compete in endurance racing and at Indianapolis, before returning with Alpine in 2021 and then moving to Aston Martin for 2023. He is third in the championship and has finished on the podium in all but two races so far this year. Verstappen said: "I like him. He never gave up and you can see he loves the sport. Sometimes, after so many years of only having a car that is capable of driving in the midfield, maybe you lose a bit of that love but he is a real racer. He is an animal." Alonso said he was optimistic that Aston Martin would be more competitive in Canada this weekend than they were at the last race in Spain, when they had their weakest performance of the season. "It should be a good weekend," said Alonso, who qualified his Alpine second on the grid in the rain in Montreal last year, with wet weather predicted again for Saturday. "But we also had expectations in Barcelona and we didn't perform that race. We have a couple of new parts. Hopefully we can be a little bit more competitive than Barcelona." Verstappen is hot favourite to win on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday and a victory would be the 41st of his career, drawing him level with Ayrton Senna's total, with just Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton ahead. Verstappen said it was impossible to compare the two achievements. "People always have different kind of careers," he said. "Maybe some drivers get into a race-winning car sooner than others. Nowadays, we have more races than back in the day so I never really look at the number but as a kid I would never have imagined to be in that list. It is an amazing career for sure but you can't compare it." Verstappen said he understood why those watching F1 would be finding his domination of the sport a turn-off. "It is nice sometimes to have good competition," he sad. "For the sport in general, I understand of course if people get a bit bored if only one team is dominating. We have seen it also in the past with Mercedes and Ferrari and Red Bull. "For sure, I hope that more teams can get together. At least then, even if you have a little issue or whatever or you can't get the set-up fully at 100%, there is another team to win. "It is all about hard work. I appreciated what they were doing. It was super impressive at the time. I never really felt you had to stop that. It was all about trying to work harder and catch up. via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

what other sports do you watch? if yes, what crushes do you have?
Since the blog's inception, we've been a hockey blog on and off. I'm actually not sure how I'm going to juggle having both my hockey players back while trying to keep up with all the F1 driver drama.
The very first post I reblogged on here was on December 28, 2013 about Gabriel Landeskog and I still feel some kind of way about him ten years and one Stanley Cup later.

I love hockey...I can't explain it. It's very Canadian of me. Just love spending a Saturday at home watching Hockey Night in Canada and painting my nails during commercial breaks, that's how we know summer is over.
Anyway here's my top three current hockey crushes. I love brunettes and tats.

Beterbiev-Bivol will be a special one-fight broadcast from Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — An undisputed light heavyweight king will soon be crowned in The Kingdom. WBO/WBC/IBF unified champion Artur Beterbiev will battle WBA ruler Dmitry Bivol on Saturday, June 1 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The victor will become the division’s first undisputed champion since Roy Jones Jr. defeated Reggie Johnson in 1999.  This battle of 175-pound titans will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ in the U.S. as a special one-fight broadcast. Beterbiev-Bivol will be promoted by Top Rank, Queensberry Promotions, Matchroom Boxing, World of Boxing Promotions, and Sela. “This a dream matchup between two of the best light heavyweights we’ve ever seen,” said Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum. “The beautiful city of Riyadh will play host to this legacy-defining fight. Thank you to His Excellency Turki Alalshikh for his vision and determination in bringing boxing fans the fights they want to see.” Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) is boxing’s only current world champion with a 100 percent knockout ratio, a human wrecking ball who entered the pro ranks in 2013 following Olympic berths in 2008 and 2012. Beterbiev wasted little time establishing his pro credentials, knocking out former world champion Tavoris Cloud in his sixth fight and stopping Enrico Koelling in his 12th outing to capture the IBF world title. Beterbiev picked up the WBC strap with a 10th-round TKO over Oleksandr Gvozdyk in 2019 and added the WBO title in June 2022 with a second-round TKO of Joe Smith Jr. He made his eighth title defense on January 13 in Quebec City, Canada, knocking out former super middleweight world champion Callum Smith in seven rounds.   Bivol (22-0, 11 KOs) is a 10-year pro with 11 consecutive world title defenses, tied for third-most in light heavyweight history. A decorated amateur who tallied more than 250 victories, he picked up his first regional title in his fourth pro fight. Following two defenses of the WBA interim title, Bivol was elevated to full champion in 2017 and began his reign of dominance. He notched wins over Jean Pascal, Joe Smith Jr., and Sullivan Barrera, among others, before a career-defining triumph that vaulted him up the pound-for-pound rankings. In May 2022, Bivol neutralized living legend Canelo Alvarez en route to a unanimous decision win. Six months later, he bested former super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez. Last December, Bivol fought on the historic “Day of Reckoning” card in Riyadh, shutting out British challenger Lyndon Arthur.

interview: Anthony Head
Okay, Buffy fans - how many of you can name the American telefantasy series that Anthony Head starred in before he was Giles? It was a short-lived thing called VR.5, starring Lori Singer, and it was the subject of this phone interview on 4th October 1995 (by which time it had already been cancelled). A short version of this ran in SFX but the full version has never been published. (NB. At this time Buffy the Vampire Slayer was just a 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson so there’s no mention of it here. Sorry.)
Was it planned in advance that you would come in on episode four of VR.5, or was it something that was decided during production?
"No, I think it was basically that, after the pilot, they realised that the professor character was great up to a point. It helped establish (a) that she's vulnerable, (b) that what she's doing is very dangerous. But there was very little antagonism between them, and once they had established that they were both coming from the same place, there needed to be another character introduced who would stir things up a bit. It was planned after the pilot. The pilot set up these basic characters and from there on in, it transpired that you need to go somewhere else. For the theories to have a stronger line and for the committee to be more imposing.”
Did you have to audition for this?
“Oh yes."
What did they tell you about the role?
"Very little. There were keeping it extremely hush-hush. Then on my second reading - my first call-back - they started to explain roughly what it was about. The general description of the characters was that he is 'more Armani than Brooks Brothers' and he's a bit like a Svengali figure. You can't work out whether he's taking care of her or usurping her."
Have they told you stuff about the character that they haven't revealed to the audience?
"Oh, yes. Well, it gradually becomes revealed as the series progresses. You find out why he is such a strange, guarded chap and what dark secrets are locked in his past. They did say at the interview that initially he gives very little away, and it's exasperating because of that. Eventually you do start to discover that he does have dark secrets. We find out what makes him tick. It's a very interesting part. It's not your ordinary run-of-the-mill series, and it's not your ordinary run-of-the-mill part. In terms of American episodic TV it was very different from anything else I'd ever seen or been up for."
Was the series doing quite well when it was dropped?
"It was doing extremely well. It was very controversial, it was extremely well critically received. There are still discussions about its future - it's by no means dead - and in fact I'm going out there next week for negotiations. It's something that has developed an enormous cult audience. So much so that people have gone to Canada to get pirate copies of the shows that didn't get shown on Fox."
How many episodes did they make altogether?
"Altogether we made 13, which will all be shown on Sky, but they only showed ten on Fox because it was a mid-season replacement. We had extremely good viewing figures but they were up and down, they were all over the place. It wasn't obvious; one week we'd be up there, the next week we'd be down. So the overall viewing figures were not stunning, but the general response was brilliant. You had TV critics in the New York Times praising it hugely. It was all very good. But I wasn't expecting it to be received like any other American TV programme. It requires more work than they are normally used to. The audience has got to work quite hard to suss out who's doing what to whom."
Did you do any of the sequences in VR?
"Couple of times, yes."
Was that an unusual filming experience?
"Yes. One of the things they were very specific about was that they wanted to do most of the effects on camera, rather than relying on a lot of post-production. So for instance there's a court scene that we did that was shot in the hotel where Bobby Kennedy was shot. We did it in this enormous lounge, a bizarre courtroom setting. All the uprights supporting the balustrade were perspex pillars, so when you shine light through it, it's the most beautiful, extraordinary effect."
What's Lori Singer like to work with?
"She's very, very good indeed. The thing that I think she's exceptional at - and that I don't think your run-of-the-mill Hollywood actress would have been able to cope with - was the transition that she goes through from her 'normal life' persona, which is a bit geeky, very shy, very reticent, to this stunning charismatic beauty that she becomes in virtual reality. This is why she enjoys going into virtual reality, she can't keep away from it because she suddenly becomes incandescent. She's very good. It's nice to be able to talk through dialogue and work out things that aren't working and be able to bounce ideas around. She's very up there for ideas and things. It was very interesting, very good."
Whilst it's a very interesting show, the basic premise of VR.5 is complete hokum. What was the feeling towards the scientific aspects of the show on the production?
"Hokum inasmuch as you can't take someone into a virtual reality set-up on the telephone, you mean?"
Yes, that's this big leap of believability, that's not really what virtual reality is. It's a nice idea, but there's a lot of technobabble in the series.
"I think there were certain rules that they set up within the boundaries of what they'd elected to generate. There was always a key that she would touch to get out. The virtual reality set-up to which she would go would always be something set up by herself on the keyboard. it wasn't just something that she leapt into and out of like a time machine. At the same time, it's not that far removed from possibility. If you think what people would have thought about virtual reality ten years ago, in terms of commercial uses, and people are now using virtual reality to walk into buildings that are just on a piece of paper. So (a) I don't think it's going to be long before virtual reality using all five senses is attainable, but (b) I also don't think it's that far removed from the possibility that you will be able to access people's subconscious thoughts. It's all feasible, that's as far as it goes. No, it's not available in the shops, but it's not that far removed from possibility. It has to be an extrapolation, it has to be what happens next, because we've got this far and we all know about that. You can't really make TV programmes about that because we're already there. What we do want to make programmes about are the uses of VR and how it shapes our lives from the next generation on. I think in terms of those extrapolations, it's quite an interesting hypothesis."
Does it bother you that you are still 'Anthony Head, that bloke from the coffee ads'?
"No. Not remotely, it's been very good to me. Why should I deny it? I don't get people ribbing me and giving me a hard time about it. I get people smiling and saying hello. It was a good thing to have done. It had a good vibe about it, it was well shot, it was intelligently written, as much as you can in an advert. Humorous, witty, romantic, it was just like doing quite a good little mini-series every six months for forty seconds."
How many did you do?
"We did twelve here, and I think we're on number twelve there, and we've just shot two more."
So the American ones are shot separately?
"Oh yes. The story has gone on, and has changed. They've taken a different line. But whatever you do that achieves some sort of fame or notoriety, you are then going to be known for that. Trevor Eve - Sharon's husband - is still known for Shoestring, and he's done a lot of extremely interesting things since then. He will always be 'Oh yeah! Shoestring!' but that's not a big deal. The bottom line is that Gold Blend is something I'm proud of. It had an effect on doing TV and film here for a while, but then it opened up a market in America so I was able to go over there. It also made me box-office over here for theatre, so I was able to do lots of theatre that I might not otherwise have done. Life deals its cards, and it's the way you deal with them, or the way you learn from them, that makes it interesting or exceedingly boring."
You were Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Show. That's tremendous fun, isn't it?
"Wonderful, wonderful. I did it four or five years ago at the Piccadilly, and I had such a good time. They've asked me a few times if I'd do it again, but it always meant touring. This time they said, 'Do you want to do six weeks in the West End and I said, 'Yes!' Because he's wonderfully wicked and very dark, and a great little spirit to play. He's fab, just fab. Where else do you get that much vibe off the audience?"
Were you aware of the amount of audience participation?
"When I first did it? Well, they told me about it, but you're never quite prepared for it. The first Friday night that you do is like: 'Jesus!' But then when you get it right, you get incredible power off them. Not so much at the Duke of York, but at the Piccadilly, which is a fifteen hundred seater. To be able to stop somebody dead with just a look, because you couldn't always put them down verbally, otherwise the play would never get on. But you could just flash somebody a look in the back of the circle and they'd shut up. It was great. Great power. My own little virtual reality set-up."
Do you prefer doing stage work or TV work?
"It isn't a question of preferences. They're so different, and there are so many different excitements in both of them, that you can't compare. I've been very lucky to flip about between one and the other, and musicals as well. They're another thing again, not like doing a straight play. When I've wanted to sing somebody's said, 'Would you like to do Rocky Horror for six weeks?' It's like: 'Whoa! Yeah!' Then I think, 'I've done some theatre, I want to do a bit of film,' and suddenly something crops up. The more you put into life, the more you learn from life."
You were in an episode of Highlander: The Series. What did you play in that?
"I was about 38 or so at the time; I had to play it older than myself because I had a 24-year-old son in it. I played an American ambassador whose son has raped a local girl, whose father just happens to be an immortal. And so the guy lays siege to my chateau, and old Highlander turns up and helps me out. It was a good little episode, one of those at the end of the series when they have to stay in one set because of they've used their budget up. So you've got to have a reason to stay in one place, and so it happened to be a chateau surrounded by fog. It was a very good episode actually."
Did the guy kill you at the end?
"That was the only sad thing. I got shot with a semi-automatic weapon with bullet-holes across my chest. They cut to me croaking on the settee, and people saying 'We must get him to hospital...' In real life, you shoot someone with a semi-automatic weapon across the chest and they don't make it to the settee. Unfortunately this is what we teach our children happens. I don't know; I'm very confused about the argument about TV violence. I think it does have an effect on children. Depends how much you let them watch I guess."
What's this new thing you've made for the BBC, The Ghostbusters of East Finchley?
"It's a series starring Jan Francis, Bill Paterson, Ray Winstone, Joe Melia, it's got a whole list of people in it. It's written by Tony Grant, and it's about 'ghosts' who are people who don't really exist in order to avoid paying taxes. Bill Paterson plays a tax inspector. I'm part of the sub-plot. Ray Winstone has some odd deals going on the side, and I play this sort of East End wide-boy who sells cars to Ray Winstone in Spain. I come back to pick up some cars and waltz into their life. It's beautifully written, very funny.”

Danke Seb: F1 bids fond farewell to retiring Sebastian Vettel after 16 years
Bowing out with the crowd on their feet delivering a standing ovation and chanting your name is perhaps the fondest farewell a competitor can hope for. In Abu Dhabi on Sunday Sebastian Vettel called time on his Formula One career with just such a reception. Admired and respected, Vettel’s departure genuinely leaves the sport a little bit poorer. The 35-year-old completed his final GP at Yas Marina after 16 years in F1 and having won four world championships. It has been some career and notably for a perceptive, thoughtful character, one not of a straightforward trajectory. Here then was a man ending his career amidst an outpouring of genuine affection and a sense of sadness at his departure, where once he antagonised as many as he had endeared. The Vettel that won those titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 was a driver perceived as arrogant and often cast as the villain. Nicknamed “fingerboy” for his triumphant wagging of a digit after a victory and the often ruthless, selfish, win-at-all-costs attitude of the infamous multi-21 incident with Mark Webber, where he disobeyed team orders, so determined was he to take the win. Yet this weekend all 20 drivers took Vettel out for a farewell dinner, where his great rival Lewis Hamilton picked up the bill. They were, without exception, gushing in their praise for Vettel. Two hundred members of the F1 paddock from teams, media, and F1 turned out to run the track with Vettel at Yas Marina on Saturday night, their small way of saying “Danke Seb”, as their t-shirts read. As a driver his talent was never in question but as he has aged a genuinely admirable and intriguing character has come more to the fore. His absolute passion for the sport and its history has become clear. As has his commitment to putting his position to good use in highlighting racism, diversity, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights and the climate emergency. A more mature, rounded man has emerged from the youngster who made his debut in 2007 and then took F1 by storm in becoming its youngest world champion in 2010. A man who, it became clear, it was almost impossible to dislike. He still drove with the same commitment, indeed to the extent that there remained moments of high drama, fuelled by the strong emotion that racing inspired in him. Driving into Hamilton at Baku in 2017 was petulant and dangerous and similarly at Canada in 2019 he did not take a penalty for blocking Hamilton well, but Vettel was always big enough to apologise once the adrenaline wore off. He was ultimately a genuine sportsman, intelligent and articulate, so much so that he and Hamilton, fierce competitors, became friends. They acknowledged that it was how they treated one another of the track that mattered and recognised in one another kindred spirits in their desire to make a difference in the real world. Vettel never hit the heights of those four titles again. He had a shot at two more in 2017 and 2018 with Ferrari but was thwarted on both occasions by Hamilton and Mercedes. Two years with Aston Martin followed when he parted company with the Scuderia in 2020. His time there was an uphill struggle in a poor car but he nonetheless gave his full commitment. Intensely private, he leaves F1 to spend more time with his family, his relationship with whom he has always said defines him as a person much more than F1. Which is indicative of a man with his priorities in order. Vettel departs on his own terms, then, rightly content with his achievements as a driver and as a man, and he will be missed. “I had a great time and was able to enjoy success and win championships,” he said in Abu Dhabi. “From the sporting point of view, it’s been huge, but also I have been able to grow and mature in many ways, reflect about a lot of things.” via Formula One | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/sport/formulaone
