Feel free to ask me as many questions as you like; I have no issues speaking of both myself and my work (although, perhaps I may suffer a deplatforming for speaking too freely about my work publicly like this. Only time will tell!). Your curiosity warms me and I continuously seek to connect with like-minded individuals.

Q: Do you miss your wife, and if so, what was she like?

My former wife, Molly, was a brilliant and bright woman; perhaps one of the kindest I have ever known. I dare say that the only enemy she faced in the time she was alive was circumstance. She was quite the romantic and had a distinct way with words; each simile and metaphor which left her mouth was novel and thought-provoking. In a better time for women such as today, or even back when she was alive, I firmly believe she would have made a fine novelist if more people simply believes in her talents.

To answer your question about whether or not I miss her: I think about her frequently, but to say I miss her would do her wrong: I don't believe she would have wanted me to miss her. We both came to understand that we simply were not meant to be, and to act pretend we were would have been dishonest to not only ourselves but to one another. I can only hope she found what she was looking for.

Q: How do you and Kelly even start shootings, is it the idea for the picture that comes first or is it first the scenery and then the idea?

An excellent question. Inspiration is quite the odd thing, and I find that it manifests itself in different fashions for me. What is consistent, however, is that it is always the concept which comes first, and because I most often work in portraits, the subject of the image is the most important thing to work with.

Allow me to elaborate: years ago, I once met a boy and his fascinating entourage. Nathaniel was his name. It was when I laid my eyes upon him that I knew he would make for the most fascinating subject of photography, for in him I could sense the isolation, the undirected anger, the seeking of connection. There was so much to work with, so many facets of his being to slowly peel away at and showcase.

The most important part of photographing a portrait is that your photograph of the subject tells the viewer something about them. This is something I am only able to achieve through getting to know the subject personally.

To recapitulate my answer concisely: what I aim to capture is the sordid beauty of the human state. As such, both the idea and the scene is always found within the person I showcase.

Q: What camera do you use?

Ah, the hardware... Did you know I still do own my first bellows camera? Compared to the devices the modern market has to offer, it is quite the relic, but to this day, it still works! :) I occasionally still make use of it.

I have had to switch cameras a few times due to rapid advancements. Presently, however, I have gravitated towards the Nikon D750. A terrific and reliable camera which also works excellently in lower light. It meets my needs as a photographer and, in my opinion, simply feels correct in my hands.

Iphone Photography -

The reason i wanted to test out Iphone photography is because it is alot easier for me to access and if i can get it right it would work very well. Although the more natural and handmade my magazine looks the better because of other skate mags, i think aiming to have the best quality images will help my work look cleaner. To do so i watched these three videos above which helped me to gain a grasp of all of the “hidden” settings and features my iphone has. it helps that i have an up-to-date model because i have a better chance of getting a good crisp high-resolution image. For my photoshoot i am going to set my default settings to an exposure of -0.3x and a 0.5x wide angle lens, these will help me to achieve the look i am going for with my magazine.

Camera Photography -

Another option i have is to borrow a real camera from a friend who owns a Canon EOS 450D. The camera is not a very new model so the quality will not be 100% but this is what i am more looking for in my imagery as an old school and slightly amateur look is what mall of the magazines i am using for stylistic inspiration. The camera comes with two lenses, one being a and the other being a 70-300mm and a 28-70mm. Having never used a real camera other than a disposable, i needed to watch the below videos to learn how to use this specific one. It was quite easy to get a hang of once i started but I needed to fully take in the information given to me within the videos, they taught me how to ensure i am in focus as the camera does not have an auto focus feature, and how to get the best from this option. If my first photoshoot doesnt work or the photos arent as good as i hope i will use this as a back up option.

Punchier image processing by default is undoubtedly a factor in the G9’s crisper output, but it also has a sharp lens which, with its two extra Megapixels, is definitely resolving visibly greater detail overall. The LX3’s crops do however look slightly dull compared to the Canon G9, and there’s also optical softness in the crop of the mountain ridge from the top left corner. That’s certainly been a wise decision here as in the first row of crops, the Canon G9’s brighter exposure has resulted in blown highlights. The crops are taken from the upper left, center, lower right and lower left portions of the originals and presented here at 100%.įirst things first: as you’ll see here and on our Gallery page, the Lumix LX3 tends to err on underexposure, presumably to protect highlight areas from saturation. The image left was taken with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 at 7mm f4 and with a sensitivity of 80 ISO the original JPEG measured 4.19MB. The lenses on each camera were adjusted to deliver the same vertical field of view. To compare real-life performance we shot the same scene with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, Canon PowerShot G9 and Canon EOS 450D / XSi within a few moments of each other using their Program modes, best quality JPEG and lowest ISO settings. The 1000D / XS and 400D / XTi share the same sensor and image processing, so it’s no surprise to find them delivering essentially the same results below. Note the 450D / XSi required -0.3 EV of exposure compensation to match the 1/250 exposures of the 1000D / XS and 400D / XTi. The 450D / XSi crops show a slightly smaller area due to its slightly higher resolution. The crops are taken from the upper left, centre, lower right and left of centre, and are presented at 100%. The image above was taken with the Canon EOS 1000D / XS at a sensitivity of 100 ISO, using the EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens at 23mm f8 the original Large Fine JPEG file measured 4.49MB. The lenses were set to f8 in Aperture Priority mode for optimum sharpness. We tested each camera with their respective kit lenses and the focal length of each adjusted to deliver the same field of view.

To compare real-life performance we shot the same scene with the Canon EOS 1000D / XS, EOS 450D / XSi and the EOS 400D / XTi within a few moments of each other using their best quality JPEG settings, 100 ISO sensitivities and default processing options. Outdoor resolution / Studio resolution / High ISO Noise / Noise Reduction Now let’s look at the EOS 1000D / XS’s resolution in a studio environment. Then you’ll really see what the 1000D / XS is capable of. So unless you prefer the subdued look of the default JPEGs, you may wish to increase the in-camera sharpening by a notch or better still, shoot in RAW instead. The high contrast buildings can cause sharpening artefacts on most cameras, but even then there’s few who wouldn’t prefer the RAW conversion below right – and this is using the default settings with the supplied software, so required minimal effort. We’ve seen a similar effect with other recent Canon DSLRs, where default JPEGs can appear relatively soft and RAW conversions look like a veil has been lifted.
