Article: Harry Styles signs cap for Caps For Kids

August 1st, 2018: the Instagram account of Caps For Kids posted a picture yesterday of a baseball cap signed by Harry Styles that will be donated to a child undergoing chemotherapy.

Caps For Kids is non profit organization based in Louisiana that donates hats signed by sport personalities and famous people in the entertainment industry to children with cancer that are undergoing treatment. The idea is that the signed hat helps the child feel connected to and supported by their “hero” during this challenging time.

The organisation was founded in 1993 by Dr. Stephen Heinrich, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in New Orleans and a clinical professor at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Heinrich at the time was treating a young patient who was a fan of the Auburn University football team. Dr. Heinrich had the idea of getting a hat autographed by Terry Bowden, the then coach for the Auburn University football team, and by Bobby Bowden, the football coach for Florida State University and gifting it to his young patient. After seeing the joy that the hat brought to his patient, Dr. Heinrich had the idea of expanding this initiative nationwide by founding Caps For Kids.

Caps For Kids has 130 chapters and gifts over 3,000 signed caps each year across the United States to children undergoing chemotherapy. Usually a child is identified through social services and is asked to select his first three choices of celebrities for an autograph among over 10,000 options. The child has also the option for a special request of an authograph from a non listed celebrity. A child may receive only one cap, but in special cases when there is relapse in the illness, an additional cap may be donated.

The organization is supported by donations only. One of the ways donations are collected is through Cap Day. Throughout the year schools and businesses take part in Caps For Kids’ Cap Day during which everybody is encouraged to wear their favorite hat and give donations to this charity. There are many other ways the organization can be supported, including donating directly to it to cover the cost of one hat for one child ($45) or of multiple hats, organizing special events or auctions, or even shopping at AmazonSmile.
