Kintypes and awakenings

It's been a hell of a couple of years. This is my first time talking about some of these kintypes. It always feels vulnerable to do so.

Captain Hook (Peter Pan (unknown specific canon))

Arguably my first awakening, but the kintype I was most reluctant to accept. Hook memories and feelings date all the way back to when we were four years old, but due partly to how ingrained they were, and partly out of misplaced reverence we didn't acknowledge the kintype until the last couple of years.

Ken Ichijouji (Digimon Adventure 02)

First 'official' awakening; an extremely powerful, sudden. and traumatic experience. Nightmares and exotrauma forced us to stop watching the source of this kintype while it was airing, and we lived with the knowledge that we were 'somehow' connected to Ken for years before discovering otakukin/fictionkin.

Vriska Serket (Homestuck)

Spent several years denying this kintype despite obvious connection to it, and to the source due to an at the time (and in hindsight, bizarre) belief that you could only have one fictionkintype. Accepting this kintype I suppose is what opened the floodgates to other kintypes.

Pearl (Steven Universe)

Hated and avoided this source instinctively. Finally watched three episodes. Got extremely upset, hated it, and refused to watch any more. A year later was forced to watch more. Was hit by it almost immediately. Initially refused to accept the connection, and believed Pearl to be a soulbond rather than a kintype, but eventually had to accept that we were one and the same.

Griff (Slayers) (noncanon)

Another ‘early’ awakening with a lot of associated confusion and difficulty in acceptance. I’ve known I was connected to the Slayers ‘red world’ somehow since I was about 14, but my cryptic soulbond friend Xelloss never wanted to do much more than tease me about it. I’ve finally figured out some of the details in the last five years or so.

Nina Kaina (Pathologic)

This awakening just HAPPENED to me all of a sudden in a flash-shift. One second I felt like I had no connection to the source whatsoever, and the next second I was speaking as Nina with an understanding of the source without actually having played/experienced most of it.

"Joker" Kurusu (Persona 5)

Had an instinctive desire to avoid this source repeatedly. When I finally was exposed to it, we questioned Akechi for most of the story until we realized that Xelloss was actually Akechi and we were slapped in the face with the realization that we were Joker.

Jeritza Von Hrym (Fire Emblem 3 Houses)

an immediate connection with the source means I questioned just about everyone in the game before Jeritza. Things fell into place the second I really gave him a look; distressingly.

Victor "Sabretooth" Creed (Marvel comics)

This is another source I’ve known I had a connection to since I was a small child, really. But the universe being so broad, and the movies and cartoons so bad at reflecting it, I had no idea what I was looking at, or for. Things finally fell into place this year after I started looking into the comic. An intense dream pointed me in the right direction and after some denial, I came to the correct conclusion.

Karl Heisenberg (Resident Evil Village)

This awakening was a lot like my Nina awakening. It kind of just slapped me with a sudden and violent shift a couple weeks after seeing the source, and there wasn’t really any denying it.

Touko Fukawa (Danganronpa)

Being honest, I’ve known I was Touko since I first saw Danganronpa the Animation in 2013, but I didn’t want to have any part of that source or those feelings. In the last few weeks I’ve finally accepted it and stopped fighting with it. Probably a good thing because denying it never stopped the shifts anyway.

Mythology References in Fire Emblem Three Houses: Part 2.

So playing through the game once more I’ve come to realize there were still a fair few I missed in Part 1. I will be attempting to correct for that here.

Shambhala: The hidden home of Those Who Slither in the Dark, named after a school of Buddhism.

Agarthans: The true name of Those Who Slither in the Dark. Agartha is a fictional city believed to exist in the Earth’s core, which was mainly popularized by the esoteric teachings of Helena Blavatsky.

Faerghus: The kingdom spanning the northern-most reaches of Fodlan, quite possibly named after Fergus Mac Roich, a famous hero in Celtic myth

Lugh: The founder of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, named after the god of the sun in Celtic myth.

Pan: One of Lugh’s advisors, mentioned in Ferdinand’s A-rank support. Pan was the Greek god of nature.

Hrym: A region within imperial territory governed by the Aegir family; in Norse mythology, Hrym is a jotunn (giant) who captains the dreaded ship Naglfar.

Charon: One of the Ten Elites, and Catherine’s ancestor; in Greek myth, Charon was the ferryman who brought souls to the land of the dead.

Goneril: One of the Ten Elites, and Hilda’s ancestor. Goneril was the eldest daughter of the king in Shakespear’s play King Lear.

Nemesis: The King of Liberation, and the original wielder of the Sword of the Creator, named after the Greek Goddess of vengeance/justice.

Incarnations

Ken Ichijouji: Digimon Adventure 02

My life followed the events depicted in canon roughly, but not exactly. I did marry Miyako shortly after high school but we divorced soon after, no kids. I was a police detective and my partner was a fellow former ‘digidestined/chosen child’ from Russia who had emigrated to Japan. The earth here was similar enough for there to be many cases of identical media especially prior to the 2000s.

Vriska Serket: Homestuck

Aside from some alarmingly specific individual incidents the actual events I lived through differ pretty heavily from Homestuck. There were no Cherubs/no Cherub session and ‘Lord English’ was some kind of horrifying glitch monster more like Missingno than a person. Tentabulges were a thing. Troll genders were not like human genders. Yes, my ghost army saved the day.

Pearl: Steven Universe

My memories and experience follow canon VERY closely right up until the end of the series and then veer heavily out somewhere else. Movie didn’t happen to me. Future didn’t happen to me. Spinel is some kind of weird fever dream. I knew Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond since the first episode and yes I’m proud of that.

Griff: The Slayers series

As far as I’ve been able to tell I don’t exist in Slayers canon. Despite this, everything up through Slayers Next is… roughly right? Except I showed up every now and again. I was Naga’s primary travelling companion after she and Lina originally parted ways. I was a black magic user looking to create a grimoire of all mazoku, and was heavily involved in mazoku politics. Oops.

Captain James Hook: Peter Pan mythos

I actually have no idea if there’s a specific retelling of Peter Pan that matches up with my lived experience as Captain Hook. It definitely isn’t the Disney version I will say that much. Hook (1991) has an excellent take on my personality but I don’t THINK that it happened to me. Definitely went to Eton. Definitely crewed under a captain called Black Beard before I wound up in Neverland. Yes I cared more about my crew than Pan did about his. It wasn’t a crocodile that ate my hand.

Jeritza Von Hrym: Fire Emblem Three Houses

An especially confusing lifetime memorywise because there are almost certainly several layers of timelines competing with one another after a certain point. The major difference before divergences occur is that I killed my father (and several other significant events in the timeline took place) about 3 years before the canonical timeline has them happening.

Sabretooth: Marvel Comics/X-Men

My experiences in this life are potent, memorable, and largely traumatic. Almost shockingly, my memories seem to line up very well with the events presented in mainline Marvel comics 616 universe.

Since Garreg Mach is a battlefield for Smash Bros., have you considered teaching classes about the Smash Bros. at the school? While I'm sure they heard of the adventures your Lord and Lady, I'm sure some of them wants to know about Mario, Captain Falcon and the Pokemon creatures. Granted you're not an expert, but I'm sure they want answers. Actually, why not bring Kiran as an aide? Kiran suspiciously seems to know a lot about Smash Bros. than anyone else in Askr.

Okay! I said I was going to write up all of my findings on the sources of the Fodlan names, and I’m gonna do it! Apologies to anyone who may have already done this.

I’m going to sort this by country/continent. If anyone knows a more plausible etymology for one of these names please let me know, most of these were found through basic Google searches so I’m likely missing a lot, especially since a LOT of these names vary a bit from their sources and I only caught some of the changed ones because I was already familiar with the original. I’ll also be updating this as time goes on since I also want to cover the noble surnames that aren’t on the map.

This is a very long post:

Adrestian Empire: From Adrestia, daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, “she who cannot be escaped” and followed Ares into battle

Brionac: After wading through pages of results about Yu-Gi-Oh, Final Fantasy, and Xenoblade, I found a Xenoblade article suggesting that Brionac is a name attached to the spear of Lugh from Irish mythology that hasn’t really appeared anywhere outside of Japanese media

Arundel: The only hits for Arundel I got pertained to a few towns, but I hypothesize that it’s connected to Arondight, Lancelot’s sword

Remire: I found that Remire is the name of an island in Seychelles, which could be the etymology, but let me know if there’s something else out there

Oghma: Champion of the Tuatha De Dannan from Irish mythology

Varley: WIkipedia says that Varley is a surname- either English of Norman origin, or Irish or Gaelic origin (paraphrased from Wikipedia)

Airmid: A goddess from Irish mythology

Hrym (Old Norse: "decrepit") is a giant in Norse mythology, captain of the ship Naglfar. According to Norse Mythology, at the arrival of Ragnarök Hrym will set sail from Jotunheim to transport the giants towards the battlefield of Vígríðr.

The beginning of Ragnarok is signified by three winters of war in Midgard followed by the onset of Fimbulvetr.  This is three years of winter with no respite and is a thoroughly unpleasant time on Earth, described as a sword age, an axe age, a wind age or a wolf age, in which kin slay one another, society breaks down, and none have mercy even upon former friends.  This is the result of the wolves Hati and Sköll finally catching the sun and moon.  Sköll swallows the sun and Hati mauls the moon.  The stars go out and the Earth trembles, causing many things once bound to break free. The beginning of Ragnarok proper is signified by the crowing of three roosters – one in Asgard, one in Jötunheim and one in Helheim.  Heimdall blows his horn Gjallarhorn to warn the gods, and the Midgard serpent Jörmungand approaches the land, sending great destructive waves ashore.  These also cause the corpse-nail ship Naglfari to break free from its moorings. Loki and Fenrir are also freed.  Loki brings and army from Hel (presumably the kinslayers and adulterers from Nastrond) and the army of giants sail in the ship Naglfari.  Some sources have Loki as captain of this ship, some the giant Hrym.  Naglfari is the largest ship in the world, and can hold a horde of giants.  Another army of Jötnar marches from Muspelheim behind the fire giant Surtur. After taking counsel with the other gods and at the Well of Mimir, Odin leads the gods and Einherjar out to the plain of Vigrid.  As Surtur sets the world afire with his blazing sword, many of the gods encounter ancient foes and battle of mutual destruction.  Odin is swallowed by the wolf Fenrir, and is then avenged by his son Vidar, who forces the wolf's jaws apart with his feet and plunges a spear into his heart.  Thor slays Jörmungand, but is poisoned by the serpent's venom.  He manages to walk nine steps before dying. Freyr confronts the giant Surtur, but has no sword, since he loaned his own to his servant Skirnir.  He is slain by Surtur but manages to stab him in the eye in some version of the tale.  Meanwhile, faithful Heimdall and trickster Loki meet in combat, slaying one another.  Tyr, who lost his hand to Fenrir, battles the great hound Garm; both slay one another.  Hel marches against Asgard with a legion of the dead, but Baldur and his brother Hod return from Helheim and fight on the side of the gods. Surtur's fire destroys everything – Asgard and Midgard are burned, as is Jötunheim and even icy Niflheim.  The wreckage sinks into the ocean as the dragon Níðhöggr flies over the battlefield looking for corpses to devour.  When the battle is over, it seems that everything is dead and the world is broken. The the land rises up again out of the sea, renewed with crops already growing in fields that do not need sowing.  A new and even more beautiful sun shines down, and two humans have survived, sheltered in the world tree Yggdrasil.  The surviving gods go to Idavöll, where Asgard used to be.  Among them are Magni and Modi, Thor's heirs and now the owners of Mjölnir.  Odin's sons Vidar and Vali make their way there, too, along with Hœnir.  Hod and Baldur also survive.
