Spelled (Carlos de Vil x Sanderson Daughter) Descendants 3- Ch. 1: A New Beginning

“Fire burn and cauldron bubble, show me what’s the latest trouble.”

The indigo concoction in the giant cauldron churns and boils, erupting with cold mist. Below, an image of the Isle appears just as the familiar black limo drives over a new bridge. What are you up to, Ben?

“Anything important?” Uma asks from across the room.

“Nothing important to us… so far.”

For the past month I’ve kept tabs on Ben’s- or, Mal’s plans, biding my time for the opportune moment. After I vanished from the garden, I wound up at the forest edge near the sea. I did some exploring and found a sturdy cave with the perfect space to practice my magic. Of course by being close to the water, Uma found me easy as pie. When I explained what happened after she disappeared, Uma agreed to be allies and act as my scout. I must say, the freedom of having no limits has been the best month of my life! I’ve learned so much about transportation, levitation, telekinesis, and transformation spells! And yet… it’s still a prison.

"You want a pineapple?" Uma asks.

"Wha-? Oh, no thanks."

She shrugs and holds up the spiked fruit. "More for me!"

I almost forget just how much is new to her since it's the first time Uma's been off the Isle.

I check the cauldron again and my heart clenches when I see Carlos step out of the limo. “They’re planning on bringing more VKs today. Maybe I could sneak over and-”

“No way, Sparky! Now’s not the time to be rushing into things.”

I groan and walk over to stare off at the ocean. “Uma, I can’t just hide in this cave forever! Sooner or later I want to leave and go home.”

She cocks an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “What if your daddy just has them lock you away?”

“He would never do that! He’s my father, he’ll protect me. I just want a normal life without everyone using me for my magic or trying to lock me up!”

She steps into the water and shifts into her octopus form. “Sure, keep on believing that. I’m gonna go check out the new meat.”

I flash her a warning look. “Be nice, Uma. They’re just kids.”

But she just ignores me and disappears below the surface. Don’t get me wrong, I am no fan of Auradon by any means. But I do hold a soft spot for the kids on the Isle. After seeing how they’re just like me, seeing how much they want a better life, it gives me a purpose worth fighting for even if I’m given no credit.

I grab more ginger root and begin a fear draught.

“And what’s that for?” Binx asks from the bookshelf. Both he and Twilight have been snoozing most of the day.

I roll my eyes. “For educational purposes. It’s not like I’m actually going to poison someone with this.”

“Then why brew it?”

“Just in case I feel like having fun.” I almost don’t believe my own words.

Binx hops down and starts pacing. “I’m not sure about this, Magica. Ever since your fight with Carlos you’ve been much more… disturbed.”

His words tug at my conscience but I ignore him and continue to mix the draught.

“I know what I’m doing, Binx. I’m finally free to do what I want, free of judgment. For once I can actually live without fear of failing anyone!”

“At what cost? You’ve always done this, Magica. Isolate yourself, grow your powers only to plunge back into society and lose control. Have you ever thought about giving up magic-”

I cut him off with a flaming warning finger. “Don’t you dare suggest that. I know I’m more than just my magic, but it’s all I have left! Without my magic I’m just a weak, pathetic girl who has no friends and no future.”

Binx goes to argue but I brush past and start crushing dried peppermint leaves. “Soon enough I’ll leave here and find Father, all in good time. Then we can go back to the cottage and I’ll never have to worry about being alone or hurting anyone ever again.”

I see Binx’s face and immediately know what he’s thinking, because I’m thinking of it too. What if I can’t find Father? Is the future I’m planning really just a fake promise to myself?

“I have returned!” Uma announces from the cave entrance.

“So who’s the new group?” I ask unenthusiastically as I stir.

“Dizzy, Squeaky and Squirmy, and Celia. They’re part of the new student program. Also Hades almost escaped, which left Mal a little drained.” Uma smirks. “I think our time approaches soon.”

I scrunch my nose. “Hades? Why in Auradon would he try to escape? He’s got no authority here, only in the underworld. But whatever. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.” I shoot her a kidding glance when she flinches. “Only joking. Since you’ve given me the thumbs up, whaddya say we go meet the new students?”

“No.” Uma shakes her head and goes to grab some sushi out of the fridge. “It’s still too risky. Besides, from how Mal reacted to Hades I’d say she’s not gonna accept you too quickly. Have you seen how much security she’s got? One look at you and they’ll send you off to the Towers for sure!”

This news makes my concerns grow darker. “Towers? As in… like a prison?”

Uma doesn’t answer right away, deciding if she should say more. “Now that Mal’s declared a witch hunt for me, no offense, she had Ben build a prison called the Towers for criminals. Since they’re trying to eventually reopen the barrier she thought it’d be safer to have that instead.”

Each word sends me spiraling deeper into the doubt and fear that’s been creeping into my head. After everything I’ve done… everything I’ve worked for… How can they act so cold?

My silence leads Uma to become uneasy. “You ok Sparky?”

I shake my head as purple flames keep flashing from my hands, the entire cave starting to shake. I look to Binx for help, but all he can offer is expression of pity.

“Somewhere deep in me I always thought I’d never be able to change their minds, never be accepted as someone… normal. And since when does Ben just go along with whatever Mal says? He should know me better and speak on my behalf! He- They- I… I’m done playing by their perfect rules!”

I grab my cloak and storm out onto the beach with Uma rushing after me.

“Where are you going?”

“To sulk someplace where my heritage is supposed to be locked up, and maybe find a new purpose for myself.”

With that I spin and vanish in a cloud of purple smoke.

3d. Rank the endings (for one game of your choice or the true endings of the 3 games)

In terms of all games, I think I would rank 999 ending > VLR ending > ZTD ending.

However, each one of them gave me a different experience so I really enjoy them as a whole package. For example, when I finished VLR, I felt I needed more. The experience had been so intense that I wanted to play ZTD right away. On the other hand, ZTD's true ending made me feel very introspective, even if the writting felt lacking sometimes.

I ranked 999's ending higher because I feel like 999, in general, felt more concise and it had my favourite cast. I loved the epilogue and how the game could simply end there and not even have a sequel. It felt like a complete game by itself. Of course I was a bit desperate with the situation between Akane and Junpei, and how they ended up in separate ways, but it felt fitting.

As for VLR I really enjoyed the plot twist. I felt the true ending was a bit too long, like a never ending ride, but, despite the confusion, I enjoyed the general explanation of it. I also enjoyed the sad tone of the story, and I absolutely loved some of the reflections from the another time (even if not considered as canon).

However, the game asked for more.

And there's where ZTD enters. I had some problems getting used to the cinematics of the game and the characters, and, at the time I played, some things felt weird, like how suddenly it seemed so simple to just shift. As for the ending, I really like how it was put as a moral dilemma, a ZERO TIME DILEMMA, in fact, the situation of shifting (not sure if to think that the shifting until then had been made too easy, or it was purposedly used so that only later they had to face the fact that they doomed their other selves). The ending made me think a lot about how, despite them being alive at the end, despite this seemingly good turn of events, it still felt all like a gamble, as the begining of the game. In the end we didnt' even know the identity of the terrorist, and they still doomed their first ending iteration, for their last iteration (which has the trauma from playing the decision game).

Delta's character is generally a source of memes due to his quotes, but his words still left some marks. His whole plan was convoluted. It's almost like the second nonary game, but here the multiple timelines had to happen in order for this future to come true, and for him and Phi to exist.

I also love the ending theme and it plays very well, complementing this interminable dilemma mood the characters live through. I also love how, in the end, we can interpret Delta as a character portraying the player: "One of Delta's motivations for creating the Decision Game: he can't shift himself, but can read the minds of those who experienced other timelines, and was interested in learning about them. Given that Delta is technically the Player Character, this is probably a meta-narrative commentary on player curiosity" (taken from ZTD TV tropes).

So in the end this was all to say that, despite liking 999's ending better for how solid it seemed to me, the other games' endings also deserve a lot of credit for their worth.

(I didn't know the ranking was for the endings of all games or one in specific so I went with this, but I may try to rank for a specific game later).

5d. Do you consider Another Time to be canon? If so, do you have any theories on ?'s identity

I think at the time I finished ZTD I found that Another Time was not considered canon. Nevertheless I really liked its contents so I like to pick elements from it and incorporate in canon. One of my favourite part of it is Tenmyouji’s thoughts on this plan of jumping to the past and change it. The bikers’ story is one of my favourites there and I felt it was a message about how, despite losing Akane, he found Quark along his journey in this doomed timeline, and how, even if their plan works, this timeline still exists. There is also a possibility that the transporter was hinted with Alice and Clover’s conversation, but not sure if that was the alternative or not.

About ?’s identity, I think my favourite take is the player. Because the player is an irregular identity in the game. To get the Another Time, the player has to achieve certain goals, such as collecting the golden files. The player can play with timelines as much as they want since they can jump through the flowchart freely and they even command Sigma’s action through the game (which can explain the way sometimes he was surprised with his vote during the Nonary Game). And I believe it refers to the player coming from the true ending of ZTD, but this is merely speculation...

Since Delta could be meta commentary about the player, I also liked to think he could be involved in this, but since he can’t shift , it’s much improbable. However I like how there is a link with how the end of ZTD is Carlos pointing the gun at him, which represents a situation of danger that could trigger a shift.

Other than this, I think I haven’t thought much about it. I may have read some theories some time ago, but I don’t remember them now...

5n. Do you have any fanart/fanfic/fangame recommendations?

Fanart is probably what I consume the most. I really love @/keycrash’s works, @/kisschasey’s portraits of Snake, @/caelytrix, the way @/aestheticcannibal portrays Kyle and Dio, @/i0n4 and much more artists. I always try to reblog the amazing works I find from the fandom and sorry for not listing more, nor any work in specific.

Twitter is also a very good media to find a lot of good ZE fanarts. Not all of them are tagged, but generally searching the ZeroEscape tag allows you to find very cool works, along with other tweets and memes.

Now, on fanfiction I can’t really give much recommendations because I haven’t read many. I mainly read some from Zecret Santa event. I remember enjoying the one I got about Tenmyouji and Quark because I really love their wholesome relationship. Link here

There’s also one I once started to read but didn’t finish due to lack of time, but which was VLR’s story told from Phi’s POV and I found the idea extremely interesting although I still haven’t read it. It’s pretty long too. Link here

Now for an idea which concept I feel it’s funny and interesting: I once found one that was a Nonary game in the IKEA. I actually haven’t read it but at the time I thought it was a really funny idea. Link here

I’ve only read the first recommendation, but thought I should leave the other two, as they seem interesting and funny.

Sorry for the long post and the delay in replying. I also apologize for any mistake I made. I’m a bit tired but I really wanted to finish this post.

And thank you for the asks. I really enjoyed the question about Another Time and, although I’m pretty bad at ranking things, I like discussing and going through the games’ content again.

Reunion: Alternative Route

Masterlist

Fandom: Resident Evil/Biohazard

Pairing: Jill/Carlos

AU: Family Life AU AU (its like an au for an au if that makes sense?)

Summary: When Chris calls Carlos with a lead, Carlos can’t just sit around and wait.

I KNOW I’M MEANT TO BE DOING UNI WORK BUT AFTER I HAD THIS IDEA I JUST HAD TO WRITE IT DOWN! (Also a lot of the dialogue is taken from a script for Resi 5 that I found 👀)

Carlos’ phone rang as he finished drying Eliza’s hair after her bath, preparing to put her to bed. He sighed, putting down the towel and picking up his phone to see who it was. It was Chris. But he was on a mission in Africa, why was he calling now?

“Hello?”

“Carlos!” Chris exclaimed making Carlos flinch as he left his daughter’s room, “We found evidence that Jill is still alive. The CEO of Tricell, Excella, may have her-”

“Where exactly are you? I’ll get there as soon as possible.”

Plans were already forming in his head. No offence to Chris but after years of waiting, he couldn’t be patient any longer.

“What about Eliza? What if something happens to you?”

“Nothing will happen to me. If things get too dicey I’ll bail, okay?”

The was a beat of silence. “We’re in Kijuju on our way to the old ruins of the Ndipaya kingdom. You better make that a promise. I can’t have both of Eliza’s parents on my conscious.”

Carlos hung up. He had all the information he needed, he just needed to get there. He made a quick call to Claire asking if she’d be okay to take Eliza for a couple of days with many apologizes thrown in. He knew that it would probably be a juggle to take care of a five-year-old and a toddler. Thankfully she agreed, correctly guessing it was Jill related.

He re-entered Eliza’s room and packed an overnight bag with plenty of clothes and supplies before crouching down and stroking her cheek, “I know this is sudden but you’re going to be sleeping over with Auntie Claire for a little while. Uncle Chris needs my help on an important mission.”

Her bottom lip wobbled as tears began to form in her eyes, “But what if you get captured like Mama?”

He pulled her into a hug, “Everything will be okay sweetie. Papa will be very careful.”

A couple hours later and he was on a private jet heading to a designated meetup point with Chris and Sheva. He had managed to pull a few strings with the B.S.A.A with the help of Chris which got him the transport and gear he needed. It felt strange to be holding an assault rifle after eleven years of relative peace. God he hoped he wasn’t rusty.

Chris, Sheva and Carlos pursued Excella into the underground palace, weapons drawn as she finally came to a halt.

“Excella Gionne! Stop right there!” Sheva ordered.

Excella began to applaud mockingly, “Bravo!”

Something felt off, Carlos couldn’t put his finger on it. Almost like they were being lured in.

“Damn it, where is Jill?!” Chris demanded, gun aimed right at her.

Excella scoffed, “Jill? Maybe I'll tell you, maybe I won't.”

She was playing with them, like a cat does with it’s prey. Part of Carlos was telling him to get out of there but this woman knew Jill’s location. He couldn’t let her get away.

Suddenly the hooded figure that Chris and Sheva had encountered before somersaulted over Excella, quickly disarming the trio with a series of kicks and punches. So it was a trap. Chris quickly recovered and fired a shot that barely missed the figure’s head, hitting their mask instead, removing it. Chris and Sheva opened fire on the figure as it retreated, managing to dodge the bullets with inhumanly fast reflexes. Landing next to Excella, they adjusted their cloak, making sure it was still covering them.

“Stop playing around, we want some answers!” Chris ordered, patience worn thin.

“You haven't changed,” came a voice that Carlos didn’t recognise.

It was a man in all black with slicked back blonde hair and sunglasses.

“Wesker! You are alive!”

Carlos looked to Chris, “This is Wesker?” He looked back to the man, “What have you done with Jill?”

Wesker ignored Carlos as he descended the stairs, “We last met at the...Spencer Estate, wasn't it? Well, isn't this one big family reunion?” He strolled behind the hooded figure, “I would expect you to be happier to see us.”

Oh no. Please no.

“Us?” Chris asked.

Wesker smirked.

“So slow to catch on,” he said as he pulled back the figure’s hood.

There she was. Her hair was blonde now and she was paler but her face was still the same. It was Jill. Carlos was torn between relief and heartbreak. Relief because he was right all along, she was alive. But heartbroken because, somehow, Wesker had done something to her to make her join him, make her their enemy. Carlos lowered his gun. Silently processing everything that was happening.

“Jill...Jill! It's me, Chris!”

Sheva looked to her teammates, “What? Are you sure that's her?”

Carlos swallowed and nodded, “That’s her alright. There’s nobody else like her.”

“The one and only.” Wesker said with almost sickening glee.

Jill suddenly whipped off her cloak, revealing herself to be in a skin-tight battle suit. If this had been any other day, in any other circumstance and she hadn’t been missing for three years, Carlos might have appreciated how she looked in it. But quite frankly he was too distracted by her going on the attack again. Sheva went to open fire on her but Carlos grabbed her gun by the barrel and lowered it.

“Hold your fire! That’s my wife you’re shooting at!”

“She’s attacking us! She’s the enemy.”

“We don’t know what he did to her. There’s still a chance she can be saved and I refuse to go home with a coffin.”

Wesker laughed as he began to approach, “Now let's finish this once and for all. Although I think the odds are a tad unfair, three on two. Right, Jill?”

Jill didn’t respond.

Carlos looked to Chris, “You and Sheva take on Wesker. I’ll deal with Jill.”

“Seven minutes. Seven minutes is all I can spare to play with you.” Wesker teased, beckoning them to come at him.

A fight broke out, bullets flying as Sheva and Chris opened fire on the man who easily dodged them with his speed alone. Carlos took cover as Jill fired dual pistols at him. Shit. This wasn’t going to be easy. He didn’t want to hurt her, that was the last thing he wanted to do.

“Jill it’s me! It’s Carlos! You know, the man who saved your fine ass back in RC?! Your husband?! Father of your daughter?! Is this ringing any bells?!” He called out from behind the pillar.

It was useless, all he could do was run and hide while he waited for the other two to deal with Wesker. At least he was keeping her distracted. Hopefully, she’d run out of bullets soon.

All too soon things turned further south.

“Poor performance indeed.” He heard Wesker say from his hiding place, not daring to peak over lest his wife get a headshot. “Your future hinges upon this fight.”

He heard Chris grunt and make impact with something solid that crumbled.

“We'll never win like this. Time to change tactics.” Chris grunted.

“We should hide!” Sheva agreed.

“Way ahead of you,” Carlos shouted back.

He followed after them when they ran past him and down into what appeared to be a labyrinth. They found a sarcophagus which Sheva and Chris heaved open. It had a… magnum inside?

“Why the fuck is there a gun in an ancient sarcophagus? Who sees one of these things and goes ‘This is a good place to put my weapons’?”

Wesker interrupted before anyone could answer Carlos.

“There's no point in hiding. You can't hide forever!”

Sheva looked to the two men, “Same plan as before?” They nodded. “You have to attack before he sees you!”

“You're merely postponing the inevitable!” Wesker goaded.

The team split up, Sheva and Chris performing several hit and run attacks that seemed to be ineffective. Carlos drew Jill’s fire yet again. He refused to return it, not wanting to risk seriously injuring her.

“Self-righteous fools! Your seven minutes are up!”

Wesker left the labyrinth, heading to a balcony while the team made their way out.

“I expected more of a challenge after all this time, Chris. How disappointing.”

His PDA rang and he simply walked away. The team gave chase storming up the stairs with weapons raised. Carlos had a full clip that he’d happily unload into the bastard should the opportunity present itself.

“Wesker, stop!” Chris ordered.

Wesker put away his phone and smirked as Jill rounded the corner, quickly taking down Sheva and Chris with a series of kicks, strikes and hits before putting Carlos in a grapple hold on the floor. Wesker made one more remark before going to leave which Carlos was too distracted to hear as Jill twisted, sending pain shooting through his arm.

“Jill, it’s me. You know me. You married me for crying out loud. Please, snap out of it. For Eliza.”

Suddenly Jill’s face became less blank. She blinked a couple of time, her brows furrowing.

“E..li..za.”

She dropped Carlos’ arm, stumbling back and shaking her head.

“Jill!”

“Remarkable! Still resisting at such an advanced stage.” Wesker commended, apparently not having left. He pulled out his PDA and hit a button which caused Jill to writhe and cry out in pain. “Commendable, yet futile! No more time for games. I've got work to do. Have fun watching Jill suffer.”

“Wait-” Chris shouted.

“What did you do to her?!” Carlos interrupted, seeing red.

Wesker merely stepped into an elevator as Carlos charged towards him, the doors slamming shut in his face. He let out a shout and punched the door. Jill’s cries of agony had him rushing back to her, falling to his knees beside her as he tried to assess the situation, figure out what was happening as she thrashed about. At seemingly the peak of her pain, she tore open her suit revealing an odd red contraption on her chest. Carlos sucked in a breath.

“Dios mio.”

“What's that on her chest?” Sheva asked.

“We have to get it off her,” said Chris.

But then Jill went silent, her face determined and not in a good way. Carlos was quick to retreat back as Jill took on a pose that reminded him of a predator about to strike its prey.

“If we can remove that device on her chest, she might return to normal!” Sheva suggested.

“Sounds good to me,” Carlos said, setting his rifle down.

“Then that’s the plan,” Chris affirmed.

The group darted to take cover, Carlos trying to make his way closer and closer.

“Jill! What are you doing! Stop this! Jill! Answer me!” Chris called distracting her.

She began to moan in pain again and Carlos took that opportunity to grab and restrain her. Sheva shot the device that was on her chest then help Carlos by straddling Jill’s legs. Carlos grabbed the device on her chest and tried to yank it off to no avail as she went silent again and managed to throw the two off of her. They dodged her counter attack and again took cover.

“It's me, Chris! Don't you recognize me?”

Again she began to moan in pain and again Sheva and Carlos restrained her.

“Come on Jill, work with me here. Fight it. I know you can,” Carlos pleaded as he grasped the device, fearing the worst when she broke his hold and grasped his wrist. But instead on pulling his wrist away, it felt like she was helping him to pull that thing out of her. And boy was it an ugly thing. Carlos felt his blood run cold as the sparking device lifted from her skin to reveal several long tubes attached to it burrowed into her chest. But as soon as she was freed from them he tossed it aside, Chris firing several shots at the thing. Sheva got off Jill’s legs so that Carlos could shift the panting woman to cradle her against his chest.

“It’s okay Jill. You’ll be okay. I’ve got you. I’ve always got you.”

“...I'm so sorry…”

“Shhh. It’s fine. No one was too badly hurt.” He grinned down at her.

Jill turned in his arms, “You're Sheva, right?”

“Yes.”

“I couldn't control my actions, oh, but God I was still aware. Chris, Sheva, Carlos please forgive me.”

Carlos held her closer, he couldn’t begin to imagine what that must have felt like. To not be in control of her own body. He wasn’t aware of everything that happened, honestly Chris hadn’t told him much on his arrival, there was no time to. He looked to his teammates.

“You two go on ahead. I’ve got her, you just make sure that bastard pays for what he did.”

The duo nodded and headed off. Carlos manoeuvred Jill onto his back, reminding him of when he found her infected in Raccoon City, “Come on supermum, our little girl is waiting for us back home.”

He might not have been able to see her face but he could tell that she was crying from how her body quaked against his and her tears soaked his shirt.

Jill sat on the sofa in their living room, thumbing through a book Carlos gave her as she waited for him to come back with Eliza. It documented everything thing she had missed over the last three years. Eliza’s growth, her milestones, the holidays and even her mischievous antics. She wondered how much she had changed. God, she had missed her so much. She had so much lost time to make up for. She wiped away her tears as she heard the door handle rattle.

“Close your eyes, I’ve got a special surprise for you.” Came Carlos’ muffled singsong voice.

The door swung open and Jill covered her mouth to silence her gasp. She watched as Carlos sent her a wink and slowly guided their daughter into the living room. Silently, she moved from the sofa on to her knees on the floor, levelling herself with Eliza as she got closer.

“Right you can open them now.”

To say Jill was shocked by the ecstatic squeal Eliza let out would be an understatement, “Mama!” The child wasted no time in launching herself at her mother, tiny arms wrapping as tightly as possible.

Jill returned the embrace, nuzzling her shoulder, trying and failing to stop herself from crying.

“You’ve grown so much. My baby girl is so grown up now.”

“It’s okay Mama, Papa made lots of videos for you.”

As if that was his cue, Carlos joined Jill on the floor and wrapped his arms around his two girls, placing a kiss on the top of Jill’s head.

“Welcome home supermum.”

More complex shapeshifts may take longer, depending on the number of moving units — which could be dozens — and differences between the two shapes.

“We’ve enabled the roboats to now make and break connections with other roboats, with hopes of moving activities on the streets of Amsterdam to the water,” says Rus, director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “A set of boats can come together to form linear shapes as pop-up bridges, if we need to send materials or people from one side of a canal to the other. Or, we can create pop-up wider platforms for flower or food markets.”

Joining Rus on the paper are: Ratti, director of MIT’s Senseable City Lab, and, also from the lab, first author Banti Gheneti, Ryan Kelly, and Drew Meyers, all researchers; postdoc Shinkyu Park; and research fellow Pietro Leoni.

Collision-free trajectories

For their work, the researchers had to tackle challenges with autonomous planning, tracking, and connecting groups of roboat units. Giving each unit unique capabilities to, for instance, locate each other, agree on how to break apart and reform, and then move around freely, would require complex communication and control techniques that could make movement inefficient and slow.

To enable smoother operations, the researchers developed two types of units: coordinators and workers. One or more workers connect to one coordinator to form a single entity, called a “connected-vessel platform” (CVP). All coordinator and worker units have four propellers, a wireless-enabled microcontroller, and several automated latching mechanisms and sensing systems that enable them to link together.

Coordinators, however, also come equipped with GPS for navigation, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), which computes localization, pose, and velocity. Workers only have actuators that help the CVP steer along a path. Each coordinator is aware of and can wirelessly communicate with all connected workers. Structures comprise multiple CVPs, and individual CVPs can latch onto one another to form a larger entity.

During shapeshifting, all connected CVPs in a structure compare the geometric differences between its initial shape and new shape. Then, each CVP determines if it stays in the same spot and if it needs to move. Each moving CVP is then assigned a time to disassemble and a new position in the new shape.

Each CVP uses a custom trajectory-planning technique to compute a way to reach its target position without interruption, while optimizing the route for speed. To do so, each CVP precomputes all collision-free regions around the moving CVP as it rotates and moves away from a stationary one.

After precomputing those collision-free regions, the CVP then finds the shortest trajectory to its final destination, which still keeps it from hitting the stationary unit. Notably, optimization techniques are used to make the whole trajectory-planning process very efficient, with the precomputation taking little more than 100 milliseconds to find and refine safe paths. Using data from the GPS and IMU, the coordinator then estimates its pose and velocity at its center of mass, and wirelessly controls all the propellers of each unit and moves into the target location.

In their experiments, the researchers tested three-unit CVPs, consisting of one coordinator and two workers, in several different shapeshifting scenarios. Each scenario involved one CVP unlatching from the initial shape and moving and relatching to a target spot around a second CVP.

Three CVPs, for instance, rearranged themselves from a connected straight line — where they were latched together at their sides — into a straight line connected at front and back, as well as an “L.” In computer simulations, up to 12 roboat units rearranged themselves from, say, a rectangle into a square or from a solid square into a Z-like shape.

Scaling up

Experiments were conducted on quarter-sized roboat units, which measure about 1 meter long and half a meter wide. But the researchers believe their trajectory-planning algorithm will scale well in controlling full-sized units, which will measure about 4 meters long and 2 meters wide.

In about a year, the researchers plan to use the roboats to form into a dynamic “bridge” across a 60-meter canal between the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam’s city center and an area that’s under development. The project, called RoundAround, will employ roboats to sail in a continuous circle across the canal, picking up and dropping off passengers at docks and stopping or rerouting when they detect anything in the way. Currently, walking around that waterway takes about 10 minutes, but the bridge can cut that time to around two minutes.

“This will be the world’s first bridge comprised of a fleet of autonomous boats,” Ratti says. “A regular bridge would be super expensive, because you have boats going through, so you’d need to have a mechanical bridge that opens up or a very high bridge. But we can connect two sides of canal [by using] autonomous boats that become dynamic, responsive architecture that float on the water.”

Details on PSA’s Future in America and the Car-Sharing Business That’s Already Here

PSA, owner of the Peugeot, Citroën, DS, and Opel/Vauxhall brands and which announced its intention in 2016 to return to the North American market by 2026, unfurled the first consumer-focused step of what it expects to be a 10-year plan when it trial-launched its Free2Move program in Washington, D.C. Based around an app that proposes to offer District residents total mobility at a flat price—from cars and SUVs to electric scooters and bicycles to ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft—with no extra charges for parking, gas, and insurance. Signing up costs $10 and users may use the app to book with Bird, Capital Bikeshare, car2go, Jump, Lime, Skip, and Uber. Notably, none of the 600 cars in service will be PSA products, but rather Chevrolet’s Cruze compacts and Equinox crossovers. On the occasion of Free2Move’s launch, our New York bureau chief Jamie Kitman spoke with PSA’s senior U.S. executive Larry Dominque, formerly of Nissan and now stationed at the French company’s newly opened offices in Atlanta.

Automobile Magazine: So you just have officially announced your car-sharing business. But it was soft-launched prior to that?

Larry Dominique: Four weeks before. We put about 137 of the cars out on the streets of Washington, D.C. We had put some marketing stuff out there and allowed some hand-raisers to register for the system and we gave them promotional access. Because we wanted to make sure that everything is working very, very well from the applications standpoint—how you book it, how you find the cars, the registration process, the back end.

We wanted to test everything out because everything we’re trying to do in North America is related to high customer satisfaction. Everything we want to do must be done with quality. I didn’t want to launch anything in scale until I had confidence that everything was going to be working perfectly.

AM: You could argue that even that the hard launch is sort of a beta because it’s in only one city. How soon do you see yourself expanding into other cities?

LD: Great question. One of the things that my CEO [Carlos Tavares] believes in is profitability. He likes margin, and he likes managing frugally and with high agility. So we’ve looked at what other car-sharing businesses have done. Enterprise has bought into cities and gone out of cities; car2go has bought into a lot of cities, and they lost $60 million in the U.S. last year. Washington D.C. is a fairly high-cost city to do this, so what our team has done is set up a very lean operation. I’m very confident it will turn around to profitability pretty quickly. We looked at many different cities, we looked at population density, income, openness to mobility and alternative transportation, and we chose D.C. as one of the top cities that we felt was right for mobility services, in particular car-sharing. As we get a good understanding of the financials and how to operate car-sharing efficiently, we’ll be ready to jump to the next city. We’re already identifying other potential candidate cities.

AM: Where do you guys see yourselves as differing in your business model from the companies that have been doing this unsuccessfully so far? What’s structurally different about what you’re attempting?

LD: On the experiential side, we believe the front end of our app is better than most, and we’re going to continue to roll out new features. Things that attract loyalty, things that we believe will make the access to the vehicles easier, faster, more reliable, more consistent. In concert with our Free2Move car-sharing, we’re launching our Free2Move aggregation app as well, which incorporates our car-sharing in it.

AM: What else does Free2Move Aggregation include?

LD: Free2Move Aggregation is a platform we launched here a year ago where, through our multi-provider registration, you can come into our app, put in your driver’s license information once and credit-card information once, and you’re registered for any of our partners that are on our system. In the city of D.C., as of this conversation, we have nine discreet programs. Car sharing, bike sharing, scooter sharing, and so on. We’re going to be incorporating ride-hailing soon.

Aggregation is nice in the sense that is gives you access to what we call First Mile/Last Mile, so if you want car-sharing or ride-hailing you can get it. If you just want an electric scooter to go six or eight blocks, we have that available as well. And you don’t have to worry about going to a dozen native apps. You can do it all through our app, and all the billing and everything else is taken care of.

Even though they’re a competitor for Free2Move car-sharing, car2go are on our aggregation platform. Primarily because we believe there’s a big enough marketplace out there for everybody to participate. Also, they run about 75 percent Smarts and 25 percent Mercedes, so that’s different types of vehicles for different needs. For now, we’re running Chevy Equinoxes and Chevy Cruzes in D.C., so we believe we have the right cars and the right SUV. Nobody else right now offers a [car-sharing] SUV, but we do.

AM: I guess on some simplistic level that’s one of the surprises—that you would be opening with somebody else’s cars, although I can see what the advantages to that might be. It seems like this plan is well-suited to allowyou to kind of grow up in semi-public, without the same pressure that you would have if you were like, “Here’s our new models” or “Here’s our new dealer network.” Whereas using other peoples’ cars eases you into the market and sort of forestalls a cruel judgment day.

LD: A cruel judgment day is probably a relevant commentary. The way I’ve approached this and that Carlos approached it with me initially is [based on the fact that he] understands really well there are 42 brands and 430 something models for sale in the United States. Incentives hover around 11 percent [of transaction prices]. Intra-brand competition in some places is worse than inter-brand.

So how do you come into this amazingly large market and focus on C and D segments, which mean high transaction prices in theory, high profitability, and do it successfully? We discussed this for a long time. And the focus needs to be on being different in everything we do. And that means not just in customer experience, but also how you structure the business and how you invest.

The biggest mistake most companies make is over-investment, and then the moment there’s an initial downturn, their fixed costs are way beyond their revenue, and they’re in deep, deep trouble. We want to avoid that. And how do you avoid that? By planning well and making sure you understand very, very well the trends, the consumers, the behaviors, their wants and desires. How is mobility as a service saving car-ownership patterns? What are we seeing geographically? How are alternative powertrains manifesting themselves in North America versus other parts of the world?

So while we are in the process of homologating our own vehicles—which takes a few years to do—we’ve made it very clear: We’re going to launch with mobility services, without our cars. If I have a business, and there’s an opportunity to make a good business case and learn from it, if I need to put GM vehicles in, I’ll put GM vehicles in. I’ll use anybody’s brands. I don’t care as long as they’re the right car for what I’m trying to accomplish. I don’t think we’re ready to actually launch our retail sales. But through everything we’ve learned and the planning we’ve put in place, I think we’re going to be very well positioned.

And I think, just to be very clear, we have no legacy in North America. I have no dealer networks, I have no dealer contracts, I have no service contracts, I have no IT contracts, I literally have a greenfield opportunity in North America.

AM: Must be exciting. It’s really almost impossible to imagine anyone else having such an open field to run on.

LD: Exactly, and trust me I’ve had lot of calls from my friends at other OEMs saying, “Larry, you have an opportunity that we can only dream of.” They can’t tear down what they’ve already got.

AM: PSA actually has in its quiver a lot of brands that I would imagine have quite a bit of good will—Citroën, Peugeot, and Opel—in the United States. I think those can credibly be sold as mildly upscale, reasonably premium vehicles, which is a good thing. And there is a base of people who are familiar with the brands and would be excited to buy one of their cars. Which brands do you think make the most sense for North America? What does your research tell you?

LD: Some of the most fun I’m having is listening to all the different guessing that’s going on out there in the marketplace. Every time there’s an article in Automotive News and it talks about the brand, people are saying, “Oh, it’s gotta be DS—no, it’s gotta be Opel. Oh, it’s probably gonna be Peugeot.” Right? So we’re hearing a lot of these different things.

We’ve identified the brand. I know [PSA CEO] Carlos [Tavares] is cryptic, and we’ve been cryptic for a reason. But we’ve done the research; we wanted to understand. One of the things we wanted to understand is what is the awareness level? What is the perception of the brands and the company or being French? What does it mean to American consumers and Canadian consumers?

And the great news, to your point, is a lot of people had very positive reactions to a French automaker. They thought it was different. We did static clinics with the vehicles. We did dynamic clinics with the vehicles, including competitors and so forth, and I’m very, very pleased with the response we got from American and Canadian consumers related to all of our brands.

So we don’t start out in negative position in anyway. It’s interesting because if you resurrect another French brand from the past, the response was much more negative.

AM: That would be Renault?

LD: Yeah. And they injured the brand with the Alliance, they had some major market issues with some of those cars, and that still resonates with people in their minds.

AM: What do you mean major market issues?

LD: From our point of view, what I wanted to make sure is, I wanted to understand where our brands resonated, where we had challenges, what opportunities existed, what sore spots were there from already existing products. So the great news for me is people are open to us. When you look back 60 years ago when the Japanese came in for the first time in the late ’50s, the cars were basically crap. They were small compared to the U.S. cars, they were underpowered, they rusted easily—and they fixed those things. But it took decades for them to fix the issues. The Koreans came in 30 years ago, and also their products were not very good. Today they are.

The great news for me is our products are already globally competitive, and having quality, reliability, safety, is just a cost of entry now. We make good cars. And I’m very confident the cars we’re designing with full homologation for North America, with the right specs and features—including the right size cup-holders. We’re going be much more vocal externally [about which brand] in the first quarter next year. We know that we have one opportunity to re-enter the North America market successfully.

We will focus on customer satisfaction and on high margins, not on market share. If I’m bringing vehicles over for the time being from Europe, and plants in Europe, they’ll make a marginal contribution to an existing marketplace. Yes, we have to invest uniquely to build some products in North America, but for the most part, it’s using existing plants we have, which means I don’t have to pay for a billion-dollar plant, divided by every car I sell. You can focus on margin per vehicle sold.

AM: Well all the discussion of margin makes me think that you would come with some sort of SUV since they seem to carry the biggest margins.

LD: What I sense is very clear externally and internally: You cannot ignore the four key segments, you can’t ignore C-sedan or whatever you want to define as a future sedan.

AM: You mean the way Ford Motor Company is.

LD: I hear you, and look where their stock is.

You need an unique value proposition. We’re not thinking of the value proposition as merely the vehicle, we’re thinking of our value proposition as the buying process, the sales process, the ownership process, the high-end mobility. We believe that part of our value proposition is not only having great differentiated vehicles, beautiful design, great features, with the right performance, with the right DNA to be French, and to be the brand we’re bringing to the market, but it’s also that whole attached experience to the whole process, and what differentiates us from other brands.

From a French brand point of view, just being French, I was very pleased to learn [from research, that] people understand fashion and design and innovation come out of France in addition to luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Hermès and great wine. American consumers think the vehicles would have a certain kind of flair and uniqueness and design and so forth, but there’s not a negative association.

Relative to our French brands, as you can imagine, Peugeot and Citroën have a history here in the United States, and people know of them. Older people know them directly through friends, family, themselves. Younger people know some of the brands, or they have an uncle that had a 504 or something like that. But you show them the logos, and many people are aware of the logos. And you can just show them the Peugeot logo, show them the Citroën logo, and a lot of people know what those are. DS is less known, but DS has only been a brand for about five years and has never been sold here.

AM: I’m guessing it’s probably a choice between Citroën and Peugeot, but at the same time it occurs to me that you could actually have the luxury of having a dealership or portal where you could buy or get all three brands or even four brands, and each of the brands could be represented by a model. There could be one Peugeot and one Citroën and if they’re all together in the same place, what’s the difference? You get something that’s greater than the sum of its parts in terms of excitement and interest.

LD: It’s interesting you say that. One of the things that’s extremely critical for me, is I know the energy that all the OEMs spend differentiating their own individual brands. How Buicks are different from Cadillacs, how Chevy is different from Buick, how Infiniti is different from Nissan. And if you’re going to successfully and organically build the brand, you have to focus on that brand, just the single brand. It’s not to say in the future once you’re well established and positioned, you could potentially bring another brand in, but we’re going to focus on a single brand.

Before joining Autodesk, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship with Pierre Poulin at the University of Montreal in the LIGUM graphics lab. Eric obtained his PhD in Computer Science from McGill University where he specialized in computer graphics at the Centre for Intelligent Machines under the supervision of Gregory Dudek. He has also completed a Master of Science (computer science) at McGill and a Bachelor of music at McGill where he majored in jazz performance (saxophone) and computer science.

Great to see you back again Eric! Does this mean you had a great time at CGA conference last year?

Definitely! Last year was my first time in Belgrade, but I was spoiled since one of my close colleagues at Autodesk is from here (Nikola Milošević), and made sure that I got to see many of the special things Belgrade has to offer. It was clear from the outset that VFX Serbia and CGA Belgrade take this event very seriously and the organization and content are top-notch. It was great to hang out with everybody, make new friends, and catch up with others during the event. The presentations were great, and I had some good meetings with customers as well. The student participation is high, which is always encouraging to see at these kinds of events.

Developing the CG community must be very important to Autodesk as one of the main supporters of CGA conference from day one? How do you see your users worldwide?

Yes, at Autodesk we try to support the VFX community as much as we can. We sponsor many conferences as well as events worldwide and also host some of our own community events in various cities to try to keep the local communities thriving. We understand that people are using many products to accomplish their ultimate job of making art, and are happy to do our part to try to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Judging by your research publications, your interest in computer graphics has started, for most of our audience, in the early days. How do you see the 90s compared to almost now 20s in the CG industry and the software development?

Yeah, I guess I’m old! Hehe 🙂 I can still remember seeing some of the earlier renders with global illumination for the first time and how amazing they were! They were using all kinds of approximation techniques just to make the rendering tractable on the Silicon Graphics machines at the time. Fast forward, and we have things like deep-learning-based denoisers for Monte Carlo renders that are performing remarkably well for static images. This would have looked like science fiction back then!

One of the things I find really cool looking back is that Marcos Fajardo bet his future on pure Monte Carlo path tracing when it wasn’t the popular thing to do at the time. As CPUs got faster and started having higher thread counts, and recently as GPUs are starting to exist with dedicated path tracing hardware, pure path tracing is proving to be the most widely adopted approach to final frame rendering for Film & TV. It’s really impressive that Marcos committed to that idea early on, and didn’t stray from it while others kept adding different approximation features which made many of the renderers more complicated to use. Arnold’s ease of use and artist friendliness stems from that commitment early on to Monte Carlo path tracing. It’s also great to see that while rendering could be considered to be a mature research area now, there is still a lot of great research work going on in light transport, material representation, participating media, etc.

Programming and jazz music, how do they play together?

There’s really some truth to this 🙂 Most people I knew when I was studying music were immensely talented at mathematics and computer science, and most computer scientists that I’ve met along the way have shown a serious interest in music. I think jazz musicians are even more adept at dealing with abstract problems, and reacting to the system around them since that’s what they’re always doing when they’re playing. I guess jazz musicians would make great pipeline engineers 🙂 While software development can be seen as being methodical, there is definitely art in programming. And even more creativity in debugging! I’ve always enjoyed pair debugging with someone to observe how they tackle a problem, and what “tools” they’ve built up over their career. The same way it’s really fun to watch a shot and figure out all the details of how the plate was filmed, lit, and how the CG elements were added to it. Sometimes on interviews I show candidates short selected clips from movies and ask them to tell me what they’re seeing – it’s a great way to see how people think and communicate about what they’re seeing 🙂

Moving from a programmer to a lead and manager role, what is the difference for you? Do you still have fun?

Yeah, I guess I’ve just continued to scale through our organization, first moving from an individual contributor, then to the lead of a small team, then a bigger team, then a few teams, and now I have an organization of around 50 people in my group. It’s really a lot of fun – I have people on my team all over Europe, the US and Canada, and a lot of very interesting people who have deep specializations in rendering, simulation, pure mathematics, systems programming, etc. As I’ve moved up the ranks, I’ve also been able to visit a lot more of our customers all over the world which is really inspiring since it’s great to see all the great work people are doing. While I manage a large team now, I do still get to have fun and find the right places to have an impact. Sometimes it’s through architectural work, sometimes it’s just about social engineering; putting the right people together so that the sum is greater than the parts.

Is your team all in one building or on multiple locations, how do you manage to support them on the distance, what are the tools to keep the whole team up-to-date?

I have larger teams in Montreal, Toronto, London, and Madrid, a few people scattered in Scandinavia, and then other individuals a little all over the place. We always try to use video for our meetings (currently using zoom for video conferencing which is great!) because that somehow bridges the divide, and lets you get all the non-verbal. We do try to bring people together at least once a year for bigger planning meetings and team building since it’s always easier to work with someone remotely after you’ve met them in person. We use a bunch of online tools like trello, mural, jira, etc., but I have yet to find something ideal for whiteboard sharing. I think that’s what I miss the most when doing a remote meeting with people vs a local one – I really like to use a whiteboard.

At the last year CGA conference, we had the honour to get the first-hand update on Arnold development from Frederic Servant, Arnold celebrity. What can we expect this year?

Arnold celebrity … hehe. Love it! Fred’s awesome – I’m sure he has something exciting up his sleeve. He’s a French rendering nerd with a British sense of humour, so his presentations are always fun.

What is the latest news in the Bifröst world of particles and liquids?

The work we’re doing on Bifröst is really exciting. Our adaptive data structures and new solvers that run on top of them are making for really impressive high-resolution volumetric simulations for a fraction of the memory (both during the solve and for the cached result). The same adaptivity applies to the other elements in the scene like colliders and emitters, so we’re able to get some great improvements in efficiency. The main thing we’re working on right now is making really nice artist tools for people to be able to do arbitrary procedural work using the Bifröst visual programming language. I think there are a lot of interesting possibilities using deep learning for rendering. But at the same time, I think it’s important to understand that it’s not a panacea: the main drawback with AI today is that while it can do things that are very impressive based on good training data, it’s not possible to fine-tune the result. In our industry, that’s a pretty big problem since artists are always looking to tweak things, create variations, and to creatively go from one variation to another. AI-based denoising is a great example of how you can assist a look-dev artist by allowing them to iterate faster since they can render at lower sample counts, and therefore reduce their iterative render time while developing the look of the asset. It should also be possible to use AI in other ways as well to assist artists; for example to catch a mis-configured scene before spending time rendering it, or helping to light a scene from scratch based on a bunch of a priori scenes used for training. I think those areas are actually quite interesting and exciting. Another would be to use AI to help choose optimal paths for light integration in a Monte Carlo path tracer. But my hesitation will remain around general use of AI until we develop ways to fine-tune deep networks and to understand what’s in the black box to a point where you can push it artistically in a given direction. Otherwise, there will be too many stressful moments when the director asks for that last minute change 😉

You’ve been to Belgrade for the first CGA Belgrade conference; how was your experience? What are your thoughts on our local talents and Serbian CGA scene?

I had a great time at the first CGA Belgrade for many reasons. I liked the intimacy of the event; it really felt like you could talk to everybody, and the events surrounding the conference were a lot of fun. I still recall an impromptu dinner where we had Mikhail from Mainroad, Szabolcs from Digic, a few guys from the Foundry, and a few of us from Autodesk. We had a bunch of great food, good laughs, great stories, and some fun competitive banter 😉 I also got a chance to visit Nordeus, where Ivan Stojisavljević treated us like royalty. It was a great experience, and some local artists like Igor Žanić and Dušan Ković attended and gave us feedback on the direction our products are taking. There’s obviously some very strong talent in Belgrade if Igor’s FX work and Dušan’s look-dev work are any indication.

Oh, and please, let us know – are there any places that you would love to visit in Belgrade again this time? What’s your impression of the city? How would you describe the flavour of Belgrade? Anything to recommend to our new guests?

I got to do a lot of fun extra-curricular stuff last time, and hope to again this year! We got to see a basketball game between Serbia and Austria last year, accidentally met Novak Djoković and his wife, walked all around the ruins, ate too much great food, found the best bartender in Belgrade, maybe even in Europe in my opinion, had some great espresso at a few different discerning coffee shops … and I might have had a bit too much rakia 😉 If I can do half as much this year as I did last year, it will be a success for me! Now, to find that bartender, since I heard he left Bar Central …
