Pulling A Face
A Man-faced stink bug showing its face in the Gardens by the Bay. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
With the lens allowing me to focus as close as less than 3 feet (0.9 meters) away, this bug was eventually spooked by my close proximity and flew up to a nearby tree.

The Devilmask (Catacanthus diabolus) is a species of shield bug that uses humans as intermediate hosts for their larvae.
A devilmask will latch on to its target’s face, injecting them with a psychoactive compound. This makes the host blissfully unaware of the insect as they swallow its eggs. The egg-laying process is short, only taking a few minutes before the devilmask flies off, leaving the host with no recollection of the event.
Eggs have an acid-resistant coat to survive the stomach. They then hatch in the intestine, travelling down as they feed and grow.

CONTENDER 1: MAN-FACED STINKBUG!
The man-faced stinkbug (Catacanthus incarnatus) is a member of the family Pentatomidae, also known as the stink bugs or shield bugs. When disturbed, bugs in this family can release a foul odor to deter predators, often containing alkane or aldehyde compounds. The brightly-colored red or yellow markings on the man-faced stinkbug, in addition to looking something like a human face, are an example of aposematic coloration, warning of their noxious emissions.
CONTENDER 2: BOMBARDIER BEETLE!
Bombardier beetles (family Carabidae) are named after their primary defense tactic. The abdomens of bombardier beetles feature a glandular sac at the tip, which secretes hydroquinone. When the beetle is disturbed, it releases both the hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide into a thick-walled chamber called a vestibule, where a chemical reaction produces intense heat and free oxygen, resulting in a minor explosion that sprays the boiling liquid at the attacker.

The man-faced stink bug(Catacanthus), found in parts of the Eastern Hemisphere is best known for its human-like abdomen showing two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Although it’s unknown if the design of the beetle is intentional to ward of predators, or if it’s simply a coincidence, these rare beetles often repel dangers with the use of a foul odour. When ignored, these bugs then deliver an absolutely nasty taste, forcing the consumer to expel the creature immediately.
