Mercury's inspiration is the Roman God mercury , being known as the "Protector of Thieves", while Emerald draws inspiration from Aladdin. and is referred to as a thief so its fitting that mercury is protective of emerald (as shown by the sceen with tyrian

on a less shipper based note; i think emerald & mercury’s relationship is my favourite out of the entire villain cast. yes they have a very acidic back and forth, at least on emerald’s part, while mercury just seems content to take it and give it back by egging her on.

however they made it deeper when mercury refused to leave emerald at haven. this is a boy who’s been raised to be heartless, to be a killer, literally had his semblance stolen because it “ made him weak. ” by all rights, if he was the sociopathic person some people try to make him out to be; mercury would’ve turned and ran tail out of haven and left emerald behind. but he didn’t, he stayed, and got her out of there with hazel when she was literally at her weakest.

emerald and mercury have that connection over their abuse, but it’s never made the focus or the reason why they bonded. it isn’t brought up on screen until volume 6, in their talk in salem’s castle. mercury can see emerald’s situation with cinder for what it is; cinder abusing emerald and using emerald for her own gain. mercury can recognize that because he’s been through the same thing.

but, he’s not actively cruel about it. he’s trying to give emerald the shock, the splash of cold water she needs to snap her out of this haze cinder has her under. and like you said before that, he was protective with her when they were confronted by tyrian, another potential abuser and definitely a danger to them. they’re stuck in a pit of vipers and at the moment when mercury should potentially only be looking out for himself, and would if he were a sociopathic killer, he’s instead consistently putting himself on the line to protect and defend emerald instead.

emerald’s sickles are very much a personalization of her fangs that she was made to hide in order to blend in and not come under even more hardship on the streets. better a fake human than a dead faunus. her sickles are called renenutet and sobeck.

however when emboldened by cinder and post the fall of beacon, emerald hides neither her fangs nor her scales, and she is capable of producing her own venom, which the blades of her sickle are laced with.

favorite thing about them: I love her color palette, I love that she's named after a gemstone, her semblance. I really love her personality too b/c she's not very nice but you can still see that she's a bit more morally sound compared to the rest of her now former allies. And her relationship with Cinder being the only thing that kept her from defecting from Salem is also very interesting too b/c Emerald doesn't like doing all of this world ending stuff, but Cinder, who happens to be involved in all of this, is the one person who saved her life. So she feels like she owes her. But all she had to do was spend less time from Cinder so that when Cinder comes back and is just acting like an asshole to her, it became one of the pushes Emerald to just leave Salem's side. This is something I'm gonna go into later on in this post, but her redemption arc is what got me more excited for Emerald going forward and it's related to her relationship w/ Cinder.

least favorite thing about them: I wish we saw more of her doing things before her redemption arc in V8. Like I would have loved to see her and Weiss duke it out cuz they were always pitted against each other in the openings. I also wished that we had more moments where Emerald uses her semblance (likely commanded by Cinder) quite more often towards the heroes. I know the whole point of her character is that she's doing bad things b/c she feels like she owes Cinder, but I wanna see how far she would have gone for Cinder and what would have been her limit in a battle against the heroes.

I-I mean, yeah, y-you guys have been getting your asses kicked, some of that my fault, but like, you're at war. You're gonna take hits. OTP: Spumoni (Emerald/Neo)... I really wish we got more interaction between them. Maybe if Neo does join the heroes, we could get more interaction.... idk I just think they'd work really well w/ their semblances and fighting styles. Also they kinda have a thing going on where they are primarily doing bad stuff for the person that took them in (Roman for Neo; Cinder for Em).

nOTP: Cinder/Emerald... even if we ignore the age gap, I don't feel comfortable about the idea of them in a romantic relationship or even a platonic relationship. I think that while I think Emerald confronting Cinder again in future volumes is inevitable, it would be a terrible idea for them to reconnect and be in any kind of relationship together. They need to keep a LONG distance from each other.

random headcanon: I like to think her birthday is somewhere in May cuz emerald is the birthstone for that month!

unpopular opinion: I know that some of the criticisms about Emerald's redemption arc was it feeling rushed b/c she joined the heroes right away, but I personally think there's just a lot of unfinished business going on w/ her redemption arc and it's def gonna be addressed in future volumes. That unfinished business is def gonna be about her and Cinder. Like I said, Emerald confronting Cinder is inevitable, b/c we saw Emerald being horrified by Salem using Cinder's Grimm prosthetic as a torture device. We also saw that Cinder was genuinely upset and hurt when she saw Emerald teaming up with the heroes. There's going to be a point where the next time these two confront each other, it's going to get heavy. One scenario I thought of was that Emerald might try to get Cinder to leave Salem and join the heroes, but Cinder's like, "Hell no! You're just gonna pretend to care and then abandon me again!" And it's just gonna be so sad cuz to Em, Cinder's that one friend you wanna help so bad and that friend refuses to accept your help and there's nothing you can do no matter how much you try b/c that's their own choice if they want to accept your help. And I think that'd be an interesting lesson to see occur in RWBY.

like rnjr is so well equipped for it because they spent MONTHS in v4 (and for ren and nora, probably most of their lives lmao) travelling on foot through wilderness they were 100% unfamiliar with and they managed to adapt to that and camp out all the time and fight grimm and probably find food and water and whatnot but like. god but i’m so excited for ren & nora’s arcs in the coming volumes though…like they really did the same thing they did with weiss and blake in v3!! where weiss was making a conscious effort to remove herself from jacques and blake was starting to open up to people before they both had the rug yoinked our from under them and had to go back to square one!!

cause in v8 nora decides that she wants to figure out who she is without ren and without being strong and hitting stuff—but she just failed the task jaune gave her (which would have proved that she was more than just her physical strength, because it involved organization of people) (even though the failure was obviously not her fault) and thinks jaune DIED because of it and now she’s just left with REN to lean on emotionally!! she’s gonna have to contend AGAIN with the fact that she CAN do more than hit stuff and she IS someone incredible without ren and she’s gonna have to reaffirm that now despite the fact that it’s gonna be harder than ever!!

and ren!! who was rightfully upset that a bunch of children (including himself, an orphan from the middle of nowhere) had to fight a war that should be handled by adults with more training and experience, and who relied so heavily on jaune’s love and optimism and belief in him to see that it was worth it to fight. and now jaune’s DEAD in his mind and he’s gotta lead two whole cities of refugees through a wasteland with the help of—looks at nora, oscar, and emerald—three more orphans from the middle of nowhere!! and his one remaining teammate, who overflows with love just as much as jaune does, has just requested that they spend time on their own!!

and obviously they’re BOTH gonna have unspeakable amounts of grief knowing that everyone else—especially jaune, their one remaining team member—fell and!! like!! this is such a good setup!! i can’t wait to see where it goes!!

I dont think i have the words to express just how invested i am in emeralds storyline rn but i cant stop thinking about it/her. today i’m thinking about *spins wheel* the parallels between nora & ren and emerald & mercury

and how nora and emerald are so quick to pour their love and loyalty into others but they both have yet to turn that love inwards and realize that they, too, are worthy of the love they so freely give and how strong they are for pressing forward despite that. but they shouldn’t have to be strong like that anymore! they deserve to feel the same amount of love for themselves!

and ren and mercury both care for others but they refuse to acknowledge it (ren is just starting to, at least) because they think that’s what strength is. but they need to be able to express how much they care for their friend(s) because isolating themselves emotionally won’t keep anyone safe! fighting those feelings is only going to put themselves and the people they love in more danger!

Which villain do you think has the best chance at a redemption arc?

emerald & mercury. we’ve been shown since cinder no longer has her hold over them, that they’re starting to waver and break away. emerald has been the more obvious one because she is the more outwardly emotional and sensitive of the two but mercury’s hesitance is there just as much. otherwise tyrian wouldn’t of singled him out in that scene in lost.

i don’t think they’re fully going to go over to the good guy’s side, but i can see them working begrudgingly with rwby+co in the future to make sure salem or cinder can’t come after them.
