The payoff for the Chris/Ryan Ryan/Topher joke in episode 112 is so good and deserves much more recognition.
Like the set up to this joke starts all the way in episode 14, with Mikey trying not to get them all confused, so he pointedly gives him secret nicknames he refers to them as so the listeners don't get confused either. And while we all know their real names, they become Chance and Shadow for us.
Then in Season 10, Mikey remembers nothing, but he does know that the gamerunners are called Chris(topher) and Ryan, so when he hears Jam talk about a Chris and Ryan at OVER, he immediately jumps to the conclusion it's them and takes matters in his own hands by holding Chance/Chris at gunpoint in Jam's cabin, demanding answers.
Cue a very confused and frustrating conversation for them where Mikey's like "I know it's you, you're the woe.begone game runner, I don't care that you made me kill people and cut off my limbs I just want my life back" and Chance has no clue what the hell he's talking about

mike shows up to old brush valley with pretty much nothing but a name and a secondhand guitar he never learned how to play.
in his first few weeks there, sneaking around at night, he'd spot chance and shadow and a few other employees sitting out by the bonfire pit when the weather was nice. they don't really have a fire most of the time, but a handful of them are musicians so they all drag out their instruments and play along and all.
mike's intrigued; its a way to get information and both become more familiar with the folks he's working with, and he mentions it offhandedly to hunter, who in turn tells chance. he's seen mike at a distance before and is a bit curious about the new guy with a shifty look in his eyes who has a story he clearly isn't telling.
and if mike is a troublemaker, chance is twice as much, so he's sure to sit out on he and shadows porch in the early morning with his guitar, right when he knows mike is heading in for his security shift. it starts off with a "nice guitar," and a "thanks," and turns to an invitation to help mike change the strings on the near-ancient acoustic he picked up on a whim at an antique store after his last breakup.
it's just an invitation and then it's breakfast every morning, movie nights on sundays, song suggestions and book suggestions and sharing pieces of their lives over biscuits and gravy and between the front seats of chance's car when they leave the valley and.
and then mike gets with edgar and chance isn't hurt, exactly, but there's a thread of betrayal clawing at the back of his throat and he isn't quite sure why. he has shadow. he has shadow and they're partners and they live together. but he's not mike, with his quick smiles and quicker fingers and a smart mouth, who touches without thinking and apologizes after and who chance still wants in any way he can have him.
it's easier to be friends, of course, but chance didn't think it would hurt this much to have mike showing up in the doorway of chance's so-called office at base, with that haunted look in his eyes, asking "chance, please," in the soft way chance has never been able to deny him. he would give mike all the world and more even if he knows he'll never be what edgar is to mike; even if he was there first, even if they share so much and keep sharing and mike never tried to drown him in the ocean or kill him in cold blood or die for him. they're just friends. it's easier that way.

@falloutcoys CHANCE/MIKE THOUGHTS !!! :]
the thing about chance/mike is that they're the best and worst parts of each other. they're both too curious for their own good, and while their other relationships balance that self-destruction, they revel in it. this wordless thing happening between them is just a new kind of trouble that moves quick and fast until they're both drowning in thoughtless touches and shared bottles of whiskey and sneaking out of obv like they're fifteen years old and too clever for their own good and ready to fight the world even if they'll lose.
it's not good for them and they know it but that's what makes it intoxicating!! mike's existence is a scorch mark through time and chance doesn't even care about getting burned now. any cost seems worth it when they're looking back with smiles on their faces, because everything is so uncertain all of the time. chance could be dead in an hour and mike could never have existed and they need this because there is a certain safety in the danger.
chance doesn't have to slow down, when mike is there. he's always been a runner, jumping from one moment to the next because slowing down means really feeling and that scares him more than anything. he's haunted and he gets the bitter-tongued sort of angry when he's sad and scared and cornered like an animal, with that sickly-sweet bite of regret in the back of his throat. maybe he never should've gotten involved at all but now they're both running and he doesn't have to slow down, so tangled up it's hard to tell the start from the end these days.
and mike's guilt doesn't feel so heavy when he's with chance. he's got the world on his shoulders most days, the responsibility of hundreds of lifetimes and people he has to protect. chance is a breath of fresh air, the calm before the storm, even if they both know at the end of the day it won't ever work, not really. it's easier to be friends, and it wouldn't hurt so much when mike falls for edgar and chance almost wishes he was the one with ocean water in his lungs, but clever as they both are they were never smart about one another, chasing devastation like it might save them if they just hold on tight enough.
here's the og post i wrote about them on my other blog, for anyone thats curious!

Mikey: I’d never stab anyone in the back. That’s such a boring form of betrayal
Chance: You’ve literally stabbed several people in the back. Like fifty times
Mikey: Well, I’d never do it again because it got boring

MARISSA: Where the fuck is he, WHAT did you do to him! SHADOW: Michael and MW are missing too. MARISSA: Don't play into his fucking mind games, Ryan. He already knows. CHANCE: I don't think so, Marissa. Ty doesn't usually play dumb. TY: Chris is right, Marissa. Playing dumb doesn't suit me, do I look like a himbo? And I would never lie to you. Unless it was in the service of protecting some very valuable data.
